John Russell, age 5 Martha Russell, age 9 mos.

Either Sally or Elvira ( or both) must have had some children out of wedlock? The only other reference I have found for Anderson Russell is this: On 13 Jan 1865, he provided the bond on the marriage of James Ratcliff and Sary An Holdbrooks in Wilkes Co., NC.

It is said that Daniel was buried in a family cemetery in Russell's Gap which has since been destroyed. Russell's Gap was named for his family.

Generation No. 2

2. JOHN2 RUSSELL (DANIEL1) was born Abt. 1800 in Virginia or North Carolina, and died 22 December 1858 in Russell Gap, Wilkes/Alexander Co. line, North Carolina (Source: Charles McDaniel, Sr., Russell-Martin Families, (Self-published, Roanoke, VA, 2014), page 15, Charles McDaniel visited John Russell's property in 1950. At that time there were still some stones in the old Russell cemetery, including one for John Russell with this date on it.). He married (1) RACHEL DAVIS 06 June 1821 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina (Source: Brent H. Holcomb, Marriages of Wilkes Co., North Carolina 1778-1868, (Genealogical Publishing Co., 1983), page 162.), daughter of ISAAC DAVIS and ELIZABETH BEVER. She was born Abt. 1803 in North Carolina, and died Bet. 1836 - 1842 in Russell Gap, Wilkes/Alexander Co. line, North Carolina (Source: She was buried beside John Russell in the old Russell family cemetery but the stone was unreadable in 1950.). He married (2) JANE D. HUBBARD 1842. She was born 14 March 1810 in North Carolina (Source: Find a Grave Website, http://www.findagrave.com, Zion Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.), and died 28 May 1897 in Boomer, Wilkes, North Carolina (Source: Find a Grave Website, http://www.findagrave.com, Zion Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, Boomer.).

Notes for JOHN RUSSELL: He is sometimes referred to as John, Jr., not because his father was John but because there was an older John Russell in the community and this was a way to tell them apart. This was a fairly common practice in those days. He did not have a middle initial; the J sometimes associated with his name, meant Junior. In those days, Junior was often indicated by a J rather than Jr.

In the Deeds at Wilkes Co. Courthouse, Book C, page 2 ... Isaac Russell, William Russell, and others say that they are "heirs at law" of John Russell Jr., deceased. This is a deed of sale of John's property in Wilkes Co. on the Brushy Mountain (with lengthy meets and bounds description). Isaac S. Call, Court Commissioner, approved the sale. The land was granted to J.M. Anderson on 19 September 1876.

This was only one of John Russell's properties. He had others. His widow, Jane Hubbard, lived in his home in Russell Gap until her death in 1897.

North Carolina, and died 24 April 1863 in Winder Army Hospital, Richmond, Virginia (Source: Charles McDaniel, Sr., Russell-Martin Families, (Self-published, Roanoke, VA, 2014), page 24.). He married CLARINDA EMALINE SAINTCLAIR 19 January 1858 in Wilkes Co., North Carolina (Source: Brent H. Notes for CLARINDA EMALINE SAINTCLAIR: In 1841, she appears on the School Census in Wilkes Co. in School District 24.

Her surname is rendered as St. Clair, Saint Clair, Saintclair, Sinclair, Sinkler, etc. All spellings need to be checked for this family.

Here is a sad story of her second marriage ... Her husband "Jeff" Russell died during the Civil War, leaving her with two very young children. Her parents helped her through the rest of the war and then she made an unfortunate marriage to John Pearson. She had three additional children with him. He was younger than she; he had an alcohol problem; and he was an abuser of his wife and all five children. When John "Sinky" and William Vance were teenagers, they left and went to stay with relatives. In 1880, William Vance was living with his first cousin, John Payton Russell, and John was living with his maternal grandmother, Charlotte Saintclair, who was a widow by then.

The reason William Vance Russell left Wilkes Co. is sad. He caught his step-father, John Pearson, in the act of trying to drown his half-brother, John's own son! He intervened and then fled Wilkes Co. forever. He went to Mississippi with Dr. William Swaim and his family. (This story was told to Charles McDaniel by the grandson of the boy who was nearly drowned.)

Wilkes Genealogical Society (WGS) Chapter XXX:11 of the second session of the North Carolina General Assembly erected" ... part of the County of Surry, and Part of the District of Washington, into a separate and distinct County, by the name of Wilkes" to become effective on February 15, 1778. As originally erected, Wilkes County encompassed all of the modern day counties of Wilkes, Alleghany, Ashe, Watauga and a part of Alexander and Caldwell.

FORMATION OF THE SOCIETY The WGS was organized in January 1967 by nine dedicated citizens whose intent was to promote genealogical research and preserve local records. The organization was named "Genealogical Society of the Original Wilkes County," indicating founders were interested in the areas of North Carolina names above. In 1974 the Society became incorporated under the current name as a nonprofit organization.

OBJECTIVES The Society's main objectives are to promote the collection, recording, study, and preservation of early genealogy and to develop a greater interest and pride in research. Our accumulation of books and other documents is housed in a dedicated Genealogy Research Room in the Wilkes County Public Library. The Society attempts to acquaint members and the public with its materials and to exchange genealogical information.

MEETINGS Meetings are held on the fourth Tuesday of each month in the Genealogical Research Room of the Wilkes County Public Library, North Wilkesboro, NC, except December and any other holiday when the Library is closed. A business meeting begins at 5:30 p.m., and WGS members are normally available before and after the meetings to provide assistance to researchers on their projects. Special presentation and speaker programs may be found on our web site www.wilkesgensoc.net. The general public is invited to attend any and all meetings.

RESEARCH ROOM The Genealogy Research Room is open to the public during regular Library operating hours: currently Mon through Thu from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Fri and Sat 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., excluding holidays. NOTICE: we do not permit books or resources to be checked out or removed from the Genealogy Research Room.

DONATIONS The society welcomes donations of genealogical and historical publications. All donated material is accessible to users of the Genealogical Research Room. Reviews of these items may be published in the quarterly bulletin. Monetary donations are welcome to further expand and maintain the collections.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION If you have questions, please attend one of our meetings and we will be happy to talk to you. We welcome written inquiries to our Society by e-mail and postal mail. We regret that the Wilkes County Land Grant Files are no longer available for general perusal; however, the Land Grant Index books are available and contain abstracts of the grant information. Copies can then be ordered.. See our publication list on the inside back cover of this bulletin.

INVITATION If any of your family roots are in Wilkes County, NC, we believe membership in our Society will provide you with interesting source materials. Simply fill out the form below and return.
