S M., MAT I, LLC

During 1963, in a small building located near Sanborn, Minnesota, four men began a business assembling air compressors. With their original output consisti ng of 15 to 20 units per day, it wasn’t unusual for the founders to build a load of compressors, shut down and then deliver those same units to farm implement dealers and other stores located throughout their immediate ve-state area. They called themselves Sanborn Manufacturing Company, commonly known as Sanborn. With the company experiencing conti nued growth, they quickly outgrew their facility in 1965 and moved to a larger building in a town just ten miles away, Spring eld, Minnesota; where Sanborn sti ll resides today. The original Spring eld locati on of 16,000 square feet was also outgrown and by 1983 the facility had grown to 180,000 square feet devoted to the producti on of air compressor products. In 2008 the facility was purchased by M.A.T. Industries, and has grown yet again, with the additi on of 36,000 sq. ft . in 2010. At 212,000 sq. ft . the additi onal warehouse space now allows the company to meet the escalati ng demands of the air compressor market. The company today focuses on air compressor producti on targeti ng the Home/Garage, Constructi on, and Commercial markets. Products range in size from a small portable 4 gallon unit to compressors as large as a 240 gallon. There are countless uses of air power. Today Sanborn employs over 125 people and produces 450 compressors per day.Sanborn Mfg is a Division of M.A.T. Industries, LLC. M.A.T. is a global manufacturer & supplier to home improvement centers, mass merchants, hardware and farm cooperati ves, wholesale distributors, warehouse clubs, OEM’s and others. They have manufacturing operati ons on three conti nents and 1.5 million sq ft of U.S. warehousing & manufacturing space. Other divisions of M.A.T. off er products such as chain link, agricultural and residenti al wire fencing; brake rotors & drums; automoti ve care, appearance & lighti ng products; vises; pressure washers, material handling carts; and outdoor power equipment.

Gearing up for a Career in Manufacturing

How Manufacturing Stacks Up (Wages)

If you think manufacturing is just production jobs, think again! Manufacturing in South Central Minnesota also includes careers in engineering, logistics and distribution, maintenance and repair, and business, management and administration. Area manufacturing facilities are great places to work; they are clean, bright and have amazing high-tech equipment.

Here is a sampling of jobs you’ll find in Minnesota’s manufacturing firms:

• Math• Communication

• Team work• Critical thinking

• Problem solving• Ability to learn

• Project management

What Employers WantThis year, employers from around the state participated in conversations to address the state’s growing skills gap. These “Workforce Assessments” sessions were championed by the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce and local chambers across the state in cooperation with the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development, the Minnesota Initiative Foundations, Minnesota State Colleges and Universities and other private, public sector and non-profit organizations

Minnesota manufacturers identified these skills as key to their future workforce:

There are a lot of reasons – and great benefits – to consider a career in manufacturing. Do you have what it takes?
