OBTAINING A DIPLOMA

By studying at Université Laval (UL) in Québec City, you can obtain a degree recognized worldwide.

Québec’s university system is divided into three levels of study. To earn a diploma, you must complete all the academic requirements for an undergraduate certificate or bachelor’s degree program, an advanced graduate diploma or master’s degree program, or a doctoral program.

To be admitted to Université Laval, you must have previously obtained the minimum required diploma. Depending on the number of years of study you have completed and the program you have chosen, the University may ask you to complete a qualifying year to meet the admission requirements.

To be admitted to undergraduate studies, you must have at least a Gāozhōng bìyèzhèng. If you have a Xuéshì xuéwèi, you can apply for admission to a graduate program—either DESS or Master’s. Admission to a PhD program takes place only after a Shuòshì xuéwèi.

UNIVERSITÉ LAVAL, PARTNER TO MORE THAN 20 CHINESE UNIVERSITIESUniversité Laval has signed 750 partnership agreements with universities in over 70 countries. Among these are about 30 Chinese universities, including Beijing Institute of Technology, Harbin University of Science and Technology, Huazhong Normal University, Nankai University, and Shanghai International Studies University.

CHOOSING A PROGRAMUniversité Laval offers over 500 study programs in all fields of knowledge. In several programs, Université Laval will allow you to choose your specialty orientation. Explore our selection of undergraduate and graduate programs at ulaval.ca/les-etudes (in French) and browse our English publications at kiosque.ulaval.ca.

Admission is your first step to accessing Université Laval programs. It starts when you submit an application, which the university will review to ensure you possess the knowledge base needed to successfully complete your studies. If this is the case, you will receive an offer of admission. Once you accept this offer, all you have to do is register and begin your studies.

Make sure you meet the general admission requirements, as well as the specific requirements for your selected program. Consult the specific web pages of each program under the “Description officielle” tab. Please note that admission to certain programs is limited, particularly in medicine.

In some research master’s and PhD programs, applicants are strongly recommended—and in some cases even required—to choose a research supervisor as part of the admission process. Explore ulaval.ca/yourproject to find your research project and supervisor.

APPLYING FOR ADMISSIONFill out the admission application form (online or PDF) at ulaval.ca/admission. Be sure to include payment for your application fee.

The documents required may vary depending on your profile and level of study. Some programs may also require specific documents. Visit ulaval.ca/admission as well as your program’s specific web page under the “Description officielle” tab for details.

Submit your admission application by the deadline for your applicant profile.

FALL SEMESTER WINTER SEMESTER SUMMER SEMESTER

Undergraduate and Undergraduate and Undergraduate and graduate: February 1 graduate: September 1 graduate: January 15

After submitting your application, you will receive the information you need to track your status. You will be assigned a UL email address, which will be used to communicate with you during your studies at UL. You will then have access to your online student file and will be able to track the progress of your application and modify your file.

ENTRY AND VISA REQUIREMENTS

Students who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents and who are accepted into a program of study lasting longer than 6 months are required to obtain a Québec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) for studies from the Québec government. The CAQ is a prerequisite to obtaining a study permit and temporary resident visa from the Canadian government. A conditional offer of admission allows you to complete immigration forms. So it’s best to start the immigration process as soon as you receive the conditional offer. There is no need to wait for the paper copy.

Québec and Canadian immigration law requires non-Canadian students to have valid health and hospitalization insurance for the duration of their stay in Canada. ulaval.ca/immigration

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

Most programs require proficiency in French. However, many required readings are in English, and graduate students may make arrangements to conduct research in English. Université Laval also offers the option of writing dissertations and conducting thesis defences in English, upon approval from the research supervisor and program director.

Learn French (or other languages) at one of the most esteemed language schools in North America. Université Laval’s École de langues has been providing outstanding language instruction since 1937. Choose from standard or intensive classroom courses or distance learning programs and let our seasoned professors guide you through every step of the language learning process. french.ulaval.ca

Differential tuition fee exemptions, available for UL French courses International or Canadian applicants from outside Québec enrolled in bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral programs who register for a French course recognized by Ministère de l’Éducation et de l’Enseignement supérieur can take advantage of the supplemental tuition fee exemption for this course only. Visit bbaf.ulaval.ca for more details.
