HAPPY EASTER 2017
Who do you say I am?
“He has risen to new life, as he said he would” As you look around the church walls you can see this year’s Lenten gospels have been depicted through
paintings. They all have a depth of meaning and you are invited to spend some time following Easter to
appreciate that depth, by reflecting on each one.
Today’s painting, of course represents a view of the resurrection.
The leaf has two sides, one which is dying and disintegrating.
The other side, a sign of life, of growth, of renewal and strength.
Easter invites us to choose life –
to allow ourselves to truly grow more deeply into the beautiful human beings that God created us to be.
There is another aspect to this painting in that it symbolises a process, not a finished result.
The growth on the right side is not complete, the leaves are not lush, the limbs not fully grown.
Our lives are a continual process of growth. Let us embrace our new growth and rejoice in it.
There is yet another way to look at this painting. Leaves die and fall to the ground,
becoming mulch which in turn breaks down and gives life to the other plants around.
Easter invites us to let die those areas of our life that are not life giving for ourselves or others.
Easter invites us to embrace and share our compassion, love, forgiveness and joy. In doing so we will bring
life to the people around us. What have you let die in yourself this Lent/Easter, to help others grow?
Take a moment to reflect on the meaning you place on this beautiful painting of new life?

EASTER SUNDAY
16TH
APRIL, 2017
Introduction
What does it take to believe in the Resurrection? Many might respond saying, “If we had only been there.” If we had found the empty tomb, how would we have responded? As today’s Gospel reveals, all we have in this story is the account of reactions to that tomb, which changed people’s lives both then and now. Some who saw it believed that Jesus had risen. On this day, we rejoice and we ponder the blessings of this astounding
mystery.
First Reading
Acts 10:34, 37-43 Peter preaches the Gospel to the Jews in
Jerusalem.
Responsorial Psalm This is the Day the Lord has made,
let us rejoice and be glad
Second Reading Colossians 3:1-4
Those who live in Christ will be changed.
ALLELLUIA! ALLELLUIA! Christ has become our paschal
sacrifice; let us feast with joy in the Lord.
ALLELLUIA!
Gospel John 20:1-9
Mary Magdalene discovers the empty tomb.
Prayers of the Faithful
Let us pray for Easter peace, Let us pray for all those who long for
peace, work for peace and live in peace…… For peace we pray,
Let us pray for Easter hope,
Let us pray for those who are tempted to despair, for those who work hard for little
gain, for those who struggle with depression or anxiety or fear…..
For hope we pray,
Let us pray for Easter love, Let us pray for those who are lonely, for
children without parents, for anyone without a friend, for those who have no
one to pray for them…. For love, we pray,
Let us pray for Easter comfort,
Let us pray for the sick and the suffering, those in nursing homes and those in
prison, those who care for the dying… For comfort, we pray,
Let us pray for Easter joy,
For those who are newly received into the church and all who assisted in their
formation… For Christians everywhere, we pray,
Let us pray for those who have died and
for those who live in fear of death. For peace, hope, love and comfort to all,
we pray,
