Tae Kwon Do History Tae Kwon Do has been around for
over 2,000 years. This martial arts discipline is be-
lieved to have been founded in Korea by Hwarang warri-ors who developed Tae Kwon Do as a
way to defend themselves from
the invading armies of Japan. The guid-ing principles of the Hwarang warriors were loyalty, duty, trustworthiness, valor and justice.
These same princi-ples are still a part of modern day Tae
Kwon Do, which also emphasizes respecting your
parents, brothers, sisters, friends and
teachers. www.kidzworld.com

Youth Sport Coaches Information
The Whitewater Parks and Recreation Department is committed to providing a quality youth sports experience for participants, parents, coaches, and spectators. Our sports programs en-courage parent involvement and utilize volunteer coaches. Coaches are required to pass a criminal background investigation and attend department offered coaches education and training.
The Whitewater Parks and Recreation Department works with volunteer coaches for all youth sports programs. The typical involvement for a youth sport coach includes passing the back-ground check, attending coaches training, and facilitating team practices and games. Teams are recommended to practice once per week and league schedules usually include one game per week.
Concussion Awareness Information A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury that changes the way the brain normally works. A concussion is caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the head or body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. Even a “ding”, “getting your bell rung” or what seems to be a mild bump or blow to the head can be serious. WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF A CONCUSSION? Signs and symptoms of a concussion can show up right after the injury or may appear days or weeks after the injury. If an athlete reports one or more symptoms of concussions listed below after a bump, blow or jolt to the head or body, they should be kept out of play the day of the in-jury and until a health care professional, experienced in evaluating concussions, says they are symptom-free and they are OK to return to play.
Signs Observed by Coaching Staff: Appears dazed or stunned Is confused about position or assignment Forgets an instruction Is unsure of game score or opponent Moves clumsily Answers questions slowly Loses consciousness (even briefly) Shows mood, behavior or personality
changes Cannot recall events prior to hit or fall Cannot recall events after hit or fall
WHY SHOULD AN ATHLETE REPORT THEIR SYMPTOMS? If an athlete has a concussion, his/her brain needs time to heal. While an athlete’s brain is healing, they are much more likely to have another concussion. Repeat concussions can increase the time it takes to recover. In rare cases, repeat concussions in young athletes can result in brain swelling or permanent damage to their brain. It can even be fatal.
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOU THINK YOUR ATHLETE HAS A CONCUSSION? If you suspect that an athlete has a concussion, remove them from play and seek medical attention. Do not try to judge the severity of the injury yourself. Keep the athlete out of play until a medical professional says they are symptom free and are OK to return to play. Rest is the key to help an athlete recover. Exercising or activities that involve a lot of concentra-tion (studying, computers, video games) may cause concussion symptoms to reappear or worsen. After a concussion, returning to sports and school is a gradual process that should be carefully managed and monitored by a health care professional.

Jr Whippet Baseball & Softball NEW! For the past two summers a tournament baseball program has been offered for 14 & Under Baseball. In 2015 we would like to expand this offering to include 12 & Under
baseball, 14 & Under Softball, and 12 & Under Softball. Participants must be registered for the Quad County or FMW programs to be eligible to participate in this additional opportunity. Each team will play in 4 tournaments with 2 of those tournaments being held in Whitewater. This program is designed to increase the competition level faced by our teams and better prepare these athletes for high school baseball and softball. An informational meeting will be held at the Starin Park Community Building on Thursday, December 11th at 7:00 pm to explain the program, answer questions, and determine interest in moving this new program forward. For questions, please contact Matt Amundson.

Youth Sports Policies
The Whitewater Parks and Rec-reation Dept asks coaches, parents, and participants to observe the following youth sport policies:
W h i t e w a t e r Parks and Recrea-tion youth sports leagues operate on an equal playing time philosophy for all participants. Youth sports athletes may par-ticipate on only one WPRD team per sport. Participants are allowed to "play up" only one grade level. Play-ers cannot “play down” a grade. All leagues fo-cus on the develop-ment of skills, sportsmanship, and fun! As parents, please help the players and coaches accom-plish these goals.

Zumba
Zumba® Toning ? When it comes to body sculpting, Zumba Toning raises the bar (or rather, the toning stick). It combines targeted body-sculpting exercises and high-energy cardio work with Latin-infused Zumba moves to create a calorie-torching, strength-training dance fitness-party. Students learn how to use lightweight, maraca-like Toning Sticks to enhance rhythm and tone all their target zones, including arms, abs, glutes and thighs. Instructor: Lynnette Brown
Zumba® Fitness – When participants see a Zumba class in action, they can’t wait to give it a try. Zumba classes feature exotic rhythms set to high-energy Latin and international beats. Before participants know it, they’re getting fit and their energy levels are soaring! There’s no other fitness class like a Zumba Fitness-Party. It’s easy to do, effective and totally exhilarating, often building a deep-rooted community among returning students.
Zumba Sentao/Step ™ – Thursdays will be a split class: 30 minutes of Zumba Sentao and 30 minutes of Zumba Step. Zumba Sentao® combines strength and resistance training with innova-tive dance moves, using a chair as your dance partner. It's a high intensity workout that focuses on defining your muscles, improving overall cardiovascular health and burning major calories in the process. We will then combine the awesome toning and strengthening power of Step aero-bics, with the fun fitness-party that only Zumba® brings to the dance-floor. Zumba® Step incre-asse cardio and calorie burning, while adding moves that define and sculpt your core and legs. Chairs and Steps will be provided on a first come-first served basis. Please feel free to bring your own step if you would like. The workout is still very effective without using a step if you prefer that option

Ageism
The definition of Ageism is 1) “Discrimination against persons of a certain age.” 2) “A tendency to regard older persons as debilitated, unworthy of attention, or unsuitable for employment.” Ageism is one of the last “isms” that society needs to tackle. Aging is a biological process wherein an organism moves from a simple state to a higher and more complex state. Aging should be viewed as a PROCESS not a problem or an illness. Aging in our language and culture, is equated with deterioration and impairment. Making people more aware of this will help alleviate the ageist bias. When you hear an ageist remark such as, “You shouldn’t do that at your age” or (cont. next page)

Ageism (cont.)
“I’m having a senior moment” or “My dad is 87 but he still drives” or my favorite “You look good for your age”. (Why can’t you look good at any age??) The best way to make the person aware of these types of comments is to ask genuinely, “What do you mean?” This allows you to point out the “inappropriate” comment without seeming “feisty” or “cranky” and the person, hopefully, becomes more aware. Another “comeback” is to return the exact “compliment”. “You look good for your age, too.” Awareness is the first step in overcoming ageism. Thanks for your help! Did You Know The word “senile” actually means to age or grow old. It has come to mean “dementia.” Dementia is not a normal part of aging. It is a disease that affects the brain and nervous system.
