The newsletter of the Friends of White Water Shaker Village, Inc.
Dues are due for 2019!Now is the time to become amember or renew your membershipThree years ago, the Board of Directors decided to change our membership year to coincide with the calendar year. New membership years had begun with the date of donation, and ended twelve months later. This method led to confusion among members about when their membership renewal date was as well as record keeping challenges and continuous mailings throughout the year for membership renewals.
The change to a calendar membership year enables us to do one mailing to all members to renew their membership. To save time and money, this newsletter is your 2019 renewal notice! Memberships paid in October, November, and December will apply to the following calendar year.
Membership by the numbersAs of this mailing, we have 164 paid memberships, all of which
receive the newsletter by mail. A small number of courtesy newsletters are mailed to local officials and museums. We also share the newsletter with all who have donated to us throughout the year or who have signed our guest register at the events. If you are one these people, we hope that you will become a member and help support our daily operations and help pay the propane and electric bill.
Each newsletter issue costs about $200 to print and mail, and is published by members John and Martha Wells of Columbus, Ohio. They do a great job.
W. E. Smith GrantAwarded to FWWSVLinda PoynterIn late June, the Friends of White Water Shaker Village received notification that they were awarded a grant from the W. E. Smith Charitable Trust. The grant was written to support the purchase of six portable display stands at a cost of $642.00. These particular displays were selected because they are more discreet than most and are not visually disruptive to the historical space. Visitors will be able to peruse information based on their interests and at their own pace.
We are grateful for the continued support of the W. E. Smith Charitable Trust in providing funds for our educational projects and programs.

Great Outdoor WeekendSchooled in Shaker Historyby Linda PoynterDuring the last weekend in September, White Water Shaker Village joined over 40 organizations in the tristate area in opening their venue to the public during the Great Outdoor Weekend sponsored by Green Umbrella. This is the third consecutive year that the village has participated.
Visitors came from Villa Hills, Covington and Highland Heights in Kentucky; Lawrenceburg and Liberty in Indiana; and the cities of Harrison, Cincinnati, Norwood, Cleves and Wyoming in Ohio.
The White Water Shaker School (1853-1910) was featured as well as the daily life activities of the children. During the 1850s, White Water had a slightly higher proportion of children when compared to other Shaker villages. Census records show that children comprised 41% of White Water’s population. The average for the other Shaker villages during the same time period was 35-38%.
Visitors had the opportunity to sit in a period school desk and a horse-drawn school bus, which were loaned by Bruce & Linda Poynter and Ed & Kathy Creighton.

Meeting House Campaignby Rich Spence
With the restroom now ‘open for business’, we are turning our attention toward the 1827 Meeting House and completing the work that has been suspended since 2013.
On the second floor, work remains to restore the Elders’ and Eldresses’ retiring rooms, the walk-in closets, and rebuilding the attic staircase. We also need, among other things, new electrical wiring, interior and exterior lighting, heating for the second floor, plaster work, floor repair, and rehanging the first floor ceiling.
The restorations needed have been estimated at over $50,000. Please consider making a donation to finish the work in this marvelous meeting house, one of only two that have survived in the Shaker West. Your donation, when added to the $23,000 already raised, will help us complete the job.
