PREPARING FUTURE LAWYERS
White & Case is the International Rounds sponsor and a global partner of the Philip C. Jessup
International Law Moot Court Competition. With approximately 2,000 students participating in morethan 600 teams representing nearly 90 countries, the Jessup Competition is the largest moot courtcompetition in the world. Each year White & Case sponsors a number of national Jessup competitions;the list has included Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Hong Kong, Czech Republic, Georgia, Poland,Russia, Slovakia, South Africa and the United Kingdom, as well as the US Mid-Atlantic Regional held inWashington, DC.
Through our University Relations Program in Moscow, our lawyers provide in-depth instruction toRussian law students in commercial law practice and English law, as well as the practical research andwriting skills necessary to succeed as commercial lawyers. Created in 2005, the Program comprisesmore than ten courses, both mandatory and elective. Each year approximately 40 White & Case lawyers,including ten partners, teach more than 700 students at several universities. A Russian graduate-recruiting web portal survey of nearly 4,000 law students found that 49 percent of all law studentssurveyed had attended a White & Case lecture or event.
In collaboration with PILnet: The Global Network for Public Interest Law, our Moscow office joinsMicrosoft, Moscow State University and other law firms to develop and deliver an annual training programentitled Professional Responsibility and Ethics in the Global Legal Market. Forty students from18 universities throughout Russia, selected based on a legal ethics essay contest, have participatedeach of the past two years in the four-day course that covers a broad range of topics such as theregulation of the legal profession, conflicts of interest, confidentiality and disclosure, anticorruption,corporate social responsibility and pro bono.
White & Case has partnered with Jindal Global Law School (JGLS) to develop executive andcontinuing legal education programs. The agreement, a first between a major US law firm and an Indianlaw school, calls for visiting faculty arrangements, adjunct professorships, joint conferences andseminars and internships for JGLS students.
Our lawyers support law school moot court and negotiation competitions throughout Europe and Asia.The Paris and Warsaw offices sponsor the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration
Moot. Our lawyers in Berlin coach a team from the Freie Universität Berlin in the European Law MootCourt Competition. The Paris office sponsors the annual ICC International Commercial MediationCompetition in which students present arguments before professional mediators in mock commercialcases ranging from intellectual property to sale of goods disputes. Our Tokyo office supports the
Intercollegiate Negotiation Competition, which helps competing Japanese and Australian teamsdevelop arbitration and negotiation skills. The Tokyo office has supported this program since it beganin 2002.
Our Warsaw office is a partner of the first Polish arbitration moot court organized by the LewiatanCourt of Arbitration and Young Arbitration Practitioners in Poland. Approximately 300 traineesfrom the Polish advocates and legal advisors’ bars made up the 130 participating teams.
White & Case lawyers in New York coach secondary school students from economically disadvantagedareas in workshops, moot court and mock trial competitions each year. Our lawyers teach the studentsabout the US legal system and basic public speaking and advocacy skills.
Our Johannesburg office sponsors a law student through the South African Youth Education forSustainability or SA-YES Trust. The office hosts the law student for a week to “shadow” severallawyers and learn about the practice of corporate law.
