ST. PIUS X CATHOLIC CHURCH LAFAYETTE

Are you interested in deepening your faith and finding a commu-nity of women to help support you on your faith journey? If so, it is almost time to sign up for the next St. Pius X Women’s ACTS Retreat which will be held September 7-10, 2017. Regis-tration opened Sunday, May 21and continues on our website a t https://stpiusxchurch.org/acts-womens-retreat/. Appli-cations for the retreat will be available in on the website. For more information, call the Parish Office, 232-4656. ACTS is a parish-based retreat

in which parishioners serve pa-rishioners. This will be our first retreat as a newly missioned parish. The ACTS retreat, an acronym for Adoration, Commu-nity, Theology and Service, be-gan in the 1980’s in San Antonio Texas. The retreat’s goals are to strengthen our faith and its ap-plication in our daily life, to re-new ourselves spiritually, to build strong, lasting friendships, and to grow in our relationship with our Lord, our parish, and one another. The ACTS week-end is presented by lay Catholic

w o m e n ,

with support provided by a Spir-itual Director/companion or cler-gy. Parishioners who serve on ACTS retreats strive to provide the opportunity for our parish community to experience, be-come, and share the Body of Christ. This year over 70 men and 70 women parishioners have attended St. Pius X Parish ACTS retreats. Now these pa-rishioners will help serve on the retreats for the coming year. Please consider this wonderful gift to yourself or someone you love.

Part I of 2

Burying the deceased is a Corporal Work of Mercy and has been part of the Church’s pastoral work form the very beginning (Catechism, no 2447). Death has been vanquished by Jesus Christ’s resurrection and His promise that all who follow Him will share in a like resurrection to new and everlast-ing life (Romans 6:5). The Church’s funeral rites emphasize this essential truth of Christianity in the three sta-tions of the funeral rite: the vigil, the funeral mass, and the graveside ser-vice. The Christian funeral is a liturgical celebration of the Church. The minis-try of the Church in this instance aims at expressing efficacious com-munion with the deceased, at the participation in that communion of the community gathered for the fu-

neral, and at the proclamation of eternal life to the community. (Catechism, no 1684) The funeral of a loved one presents us as pastors of sours with a wonderful opportunity to catechize those who attend the funeral and to assure the family of the deceased of the entire Church’s solicitude and support in their time of need. In an emotional time like a funeral, extra pastoral sensitivity is required of us. Many times family members or friends of the deceased have not been practicing their faith, may be or other faiths or have no faith at all. The opportunity for pastoral outreach and evangeliza-tion is full of possibilities simply be-cause in the face of death and grief human beings are drawn into the true perspective of faith in the risen Christ (Catechism, no 1687).

Unfortunately, the medicalization, privatization, and secularization of death and dying are becoming more and more the norm. Inherent in these “efficiencies” is the escapist desire to make death invisible and convenient, “getting over it as quickly as possible.” I suggest to you that what is at stake is the avoidance of the mystery of death and the loss of the spiritual and emo-tional benefits experienced when ritu-al and grief are authentically integrat-ed. Some parents do not even bring their children to wakes, thereby de-priving the little ones of the oppor-tunity to consider the bigger picture of life, death and eternity. Fortunately, the Church has been praying and reflecting on these mysteries since the salvific events of Holy Week, culminat-ing in the proclamation of the Lord’s resurrection.
