This Pentecost weekend we celebrate the birthday of the Church with the Descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles. Filled with the Holy Spirit, they then went forward to proclaim the saving power of God and the

Lordship of Jesus to all the nations. Because of what they did centuries ago, you and I have the gift of faith which we try to live each day. The gifts of the Holy Spirit, given to us at Confirmation, are these seven:

• Wisdom which helps us to recognize the importance of others and the importance of keeping God central in our lives • Understanding which is the ability to comprehend the meaning of God’s message • Knowledge which is the ability to think about and explore God’s revelation, and

also to recognize there are mysteries of faith beyond us • Counsel which is the ability to see the best way to follow God’s plan when we

have choices that relate to him • Fortitude which is the courage to do what one knows is right • Piety which helps us to pray to God in true devotion • Fear of the Lord which is the feeling of amazement before God, who is all-present, and whose friendship we do not want to lose.

St. Paul, in his Letter to the Galatians (Galatians 5:22-23) lists the fruits of the Holy Spirit, which are the observable behaviors of people who allow the grace of the Holy Spirit to be effective in them. They are: charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, good-ness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self-control, and chastity. A good reflection for all of us might be centered on our awareness of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit present and active in our lives……and how those gifts are bearing fruit or not. Let us move out of the Easter Season and into Ordinary Time filled with power of the Holy Spirit. Congratulations to our Adults who are being Confirmed at the 11am Mass today: Derek Bartolome, Amy D’Urso, Gumersindo (Noy) Garcia, Wendy Leiber, Duncan Long, Justin Macina, Janet Mortensen, and Rory Mount. Thanks also to their sponsors who accompanied them in their preparation.

This collection is for the purpose of as-sisting parishes in the Diocese of Orange that exhibit ongoing needs that cannot be paid for by their ordinary income and have urgent needs (such as repairs & maintenance). All money donated to this collection is put into a restricted fund that will be ad-ministered by a group consisting of laity and clergy of the diocese. Parishes with needs as stated above will apply for grants from this fund to be used for their specific needs. Most recently the commit-tee has focused the grants to safety is-sues including emergency electrical and plumbing repairs.

Thank you for your generosity.

What can one say about the Holy Spirit? We believe that this is the Third Person of the Blessed Trin-ity, a Person distinct from, but equal in divinity with, God the Father and God the Son. For anything more than that we should probably defer to the wisdom and imagination of theologians, but there are some things we can describe with confidence. These are things which the Holy Spirit does. It was the Spirit of courage, visualized in the tongues of fire, which ignited the fervor of the apostles to go out and preach the Gospel. It was the Spirit of love and mercy which called Mother Teresa and sustained her in serving the poor of Calcutta. It was the Spirit of beauty which gave Johann Sebas-tian Bach the harmonies of his B Minor Mass and Michelangelo the colors he placed on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. The same Spirit which brought our catechumens to the waters of Baptism at the Easter Vigil. The same Spirit, I believe, which found a way to shake me out of my agnostic doldrums eighteen years ago during Holy Week and guide me back to the Supper of the Lamb. God’s amazing grace. On a day in the month of October 2006, a crazed gunman walked into a one-room Amish school in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and shot and killed ten little girls. The whole nation was stunned by this senseless act of violence, which cried out for vengeance. Yet in the midst of their grief the Amish community, including the families of the young girls, did an astonishing thing. They forgave the murderer and reached out to his family with words of comfort and compassion. Not vengeance but forgiveness. Not hatred but love. Amazing grace. The Holy Spirit. What is a Catechist? The word catechist comes from the Greek word “echo”. Catechists echo the Word of God to our parish children. They come from all walks of like and all ages: women, men, confirmed teenagers, parents, grandparents, singles and religious. Catechists are not expert teachers or brilliant theologians, They are ordinary people, just like you, who generously volunteer their time to share our Catholic faith, values and traditions with our youngest generation of Christians. They are positive role models who help children grow in faith and spiritually. What an important ministry! Their gift has tremendous value...because through their word and actions, the message of Christ continues to spread throughout the world.

Is God Calling you to be a Catechist? Do you Love God and want to know him better? Love children and enjoy working with them?

Want to share God’s love with others? Want to be good role model for children? Want to share your faith more and help others grow in faith?

Want to help children develop a relationship with God? Your “yes” answers may mean that God is calling you to be a catechist!

The Holy Spirit can and will work through you!

Thank you for considering the possibility of volunteering with us. If you know others who would make good catechists, please encourage them to do the same!

Please call Marya Wallace at 949/495-4126 for

questions, answers, discussion, and encouragement about being a catechist.

We are always here to help, support, and guide you along the way.
