Do you live on a houseboat?

with your pet cat?

I knew a man who lived in a cave.

His name was Thomas.

He lived in his cave for many, many

years.

In his cave he had a bed,

blankets, potsand pans.He had

clothes on a rackand books on a

shelf.

Sometimes Thomas walked to town

to wash his clothes or get water.

Sometimes Thomas worked in town.

And sometimes Thomas and I

sat side-by-side in the library

reading our books

in the big, blue chairs.

When people asked Thomas

why he lived in a cave,

He would answer,

It is my home.

I imagined it would be cozy to sleep

in a cold dark cave

snuggled under blankets.

and squirrel chatter.

I would sit so still,

that I would become mountain.

The days would pass like clouds.

I would watch the animals and birds

who lived close by: eagles,

swallows, squirrels, skunks, owls,

hawks,

deer, and maybe even bear.

I would read my books

late at night by lantern light.

Shadows would cross the page.

One day Thomas was arrested.

He was told,

People live in

houses. They don

t live in caves.

He had to leave.

Don

t be sad,

Thomas told me.

Home is not an address.

Home is not

a spot on a map.

You can

t see home from a

satellite in space.

Home I carry with me wherever I

go. I am at home when I remember

happy times. My memories are like a

warm sweater I pack in my suitcase.

And this is the lesson I learned

from my friend Thomas

the man who

lived in a cave:

Home is notthe placewhere you live.

Home is feeling safe.

Home is a place where

you can be yourself.

Home is different

for everyone.

The world is full of homes

The breeze is home to the Raven.

A song from her secret hideout

tells me the Canyon Wren is at

home.

A clear pool at the end of a

waterfall

is home to the River.

A place where no one has made

tracks

is Winter

I have many places

where I feel at home.

The fishing hole where I catch

and release Rainbows is home.

The garden where the tulips

come up in the spring is home.

cinnamon rolls baking.

when I

m with my pets,

or when I live inside a favorite

at home when I am alone.

I learned from Thomas

that sometimes you have to start

over,

But home is a feeling

that always stays in your heart.

Thomas really did make his home for more than 11

years in a cave about the mountain town of

Flagstaff, Arizona. When he was evicted Thomas

said, I dont have a TV or anything. Ive got

the sky, the wind, the rain and the canyon wrens.

This is a beautiful mountain. You could explore it

for a lifetime.

Thomas inspired Kim Holland who has enjoyed many

homes: with her family, in the classroom, on the

Colorado River, in the mountains, in the garden,

and in the world of words.
