November Message from
Board President Richard Stoll
Where did the year go? It’s the Holiday Season already. Living in the Tropics
we have many things to be thankful for: The Beautiful landscaping, paths that
weave through the park, all the activities offered to its Residents and many more.
Jorge is doing an excellent job in getting everything green again. Check out
the weight rooms for both the men and women, new carpeting, thanks to
Miguel’s team.
Thanksgiving dinner will be on November 24. The doors will open at 5:30
pm. This will be a FREE event for residents, but Tickets are required. We will have
250 tickets available. You can get the tickets after October 27. They will be
available at the Coffee Club, Bingo, Spectrum lunches, exercise classes, snack bar,
general meeting, and Breakfast. Check with Board members: some will have
tickets. If you can not make it after you have a ticket, please turn it into a Board
member. I’m sorry this is for Residents only, if we have tickets left we will open it
up to the people that have asked for guests. The menu will be sliced turkey,
dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy, green bean casserole, yams and apple or
pumpkin pie. The board is preparing the meal.
We have some very exciting events coming up: Christmas Dinner, Jerry
Garcia’s New Years Dinner and party, Chinese New Year and Mardi Gras. All
exciting and lots of planning going into them.
On Tuesday, November 27, at 6 pm, we will be decorating the Club House
for Christmas. Everyone is welcome to help. We usually have a lot of fun. After
the place looks fantastic we will have a Pizza Party. No ticket or reservation is
needed!!
Enjoy this Thankful time of the year.

MILLENNIUM MEMO ALERT! It is that time of year again when our President, George Turk, takes a leave from writing these monthly reports. However, have no fear. I’m Stacee Price, Regional Director of Resident Services for SPARC, and I’ll be your Memo-writer this month. You know who SPARC is, don’t you? SPARC stands for Services and Programs Assisting Residents in Our Communities. We’re entirely funded by Millennium Housing. None of your rent dollars are used for SPARC’s activities. Since George gave me this platform, I thought I’d tell you a little about SPARC; what we’ve been up to and what we’re planning to bring to the Tropics community next. Our mission, should we choose to accept it, is to provide health, wellness and education resources to benefit Tropics residents. Most of these programs are free to attend, and sometimes we give out great prizes and offer food and/or refreshments! For instance, did you attend SPARC’s Tai Chi class? This exercise program taught the attendees how to strengthen their muscles, fine tune their balance and find an inner peace while going through the various movements. As of this moment, SPARC is searching for a new instructor, but stay tuned one will be starting soon! Another wonderful addition has been the Mobile Health Clinic. SPARC strives to bring the best program to support the residents’ daily lives. Starting at the end of October, SPARC will be launching a new partnership with Washington Hospital and their Mobile Health Clinic to improve the services that are provided. As the holiday season begins to roll in, SPARC is preparing special events for your community, such as:
Christmas Senior Warm Kits
Iphone Training Classes
Red Cross Smoke Alarm Installation Program Want to find out more about SPARC? The best way to do that is to sign up and take part in an upcoming activity. We look forward to seeing you at our next event, and enjoy the rest of your holiday season! Thanksgiving Trivia Q. Why did the cranberries turn red? A. Because they saw the Turkey dressing! Happy Stuffing!

Manager’s Corner for November 2018 First, Mama Turkey and her 3 babies - hopefully they survive Thanksgiving – then goats. The goats that were munching the ground cover in the creek area left quite a bit heavier than when they arrived. They stripped the banks and climbed on each other to attack the tree limbs that were hanging down. The goat herders and dogs did a great job of keeping them contained and it provided a new source of entertainment in our park. Reminder to prepare for the winter rains by clearing leaves from the roof gutters and drains. The annual physical inspection of homesites has been rescheduled to November and exact dates to be determined. Quite a few of you are using the website for rent payments and it seems to be working out well. If you would like to sign up, you can call the office with your email address and we will have an invitation sent to you. Residents can also go online if you are having a problem with your current title to your home. HCD.ca.gov. You will be able to file paperwork that will waive all back taxes and all you have to pay for is new titling paperwork. Washington on Wheels (Mobile Heath Clinic) will be here starting November 2 (Friday). They are currently scheduled for every other Friday from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM. The pool will remain open and heated through December 31, 2018, but will not be monitored during this time period. Thank you, Richard for taking care of the weekend use – Great job. Happy Thanksgiving to all. Nancy Payne Resident Manager

A Word from your Editor
Filmmaker Ken Burns on America: “There’s too much pluribus, and not
enough unum!
I don’t know, though, I’ve traveled through the four corners of this land
(sorry, Alaska), red states and blue, and lived in Texas, and I find plenty of
underlying Unity. Of course that might be because just about everyone I’ve
met has been, at heart, a human being. (Whether or not that is something
to be proud of, I’ll leave to our furry friends to decide….)
But is there something special going on within our country? Is there
something that makes America great?
You folks can make up your own list. But I think I’ve found one fact,
backed up by figures, with does show this: WE ARE A NATION OF
VOLUNTEERS. Browsing the internet (Nationmaster.com), it seems that
one in four Americans performs volunteer work in a given year, a rate
nearly twice that of Germany, and three times that of Spain!
That shows a tremendous amount of heart. This Breeze lists some of the
many activities available to you in The Tropics. These couldn’t happen
without our selfless volunteers. But our Park is not an island. Our residents
also help the broader community by donating their valuable time in thrift
stores, hospitals, Meals-on-Wheels, and I don’t know what all. Thanks to
each of you! On the facing page please read the guest editorial by member
of the Union City Senior Council, and resident, Anita Roque, explaining a
new volunteer effort.

A guest editorial Junior/ Senior Mentoring Garden Project
My name is Anita Roque. I am one of the Senior Commissioners of Union City. I am just one
of many residents who donate their time in volunteer work, and I’m thankful for you all.
In July, Commissioner Mila Josue introduced the Garden Project, but stated the need for
donations. Fortunately, I was able to get in touch with a company which supplied necessary
tools for the garden near Seven Hills Park.
Yes, this project can teach young people the value and experience of giving back to society,
and the student volunteers will receive credit toward graduation. This experience growing
organic fruits and vegetables without pesticides, will provide a feeling of accomplishment, and
a healthy diet, too! The, hopefully, plentiful harvest will be donated to a needy cause.
This Garden Project is a win-win for our city. It can grow yearly, but will require more
volunteers, especially when nature gets going next spring.
A special thank you to Florenzo Perez for his hand in planting the winter vegetables, and to
Craig Miller who helped secure the funding.

Rosemary is for remembrance – Wm Shakespeare
YOUR EDITOR has been honored with a peek at a Remembrance
Book from 1989, which contains souvenirs of The Tropics Ladies’
Club. Sadly, we have no Ladies’ Club today. I don’t know why? It
seems like the most natural thing in the world. As a child, my
little town’s Ladies’ Club was always there volunteering at
events, and, I imagine, acting as glue, helping the community
stick together. Perhaps some of you ladies would like to recreate
the club!
Here I reproduce the last page from the book: March

A MESSAGE FROM LARRY CORNELL
The b bug club is looking for some volunteers who would like to come to the b
bug computer club and learn how to eventually take over the daily operation.
I have been volunteering going on 11 years now and it has been very rewarding. I
love helping the residents who come to the b bug for help, but who is going to
take over when and If something happens to me? Does it cease to exist?
Hoping someone can come forward, Larry Cornell
THE CRUNCH OF FALL
IT'S AMAZING TO ME THAT I CAN REMEMBER CLEARLY THE CRUNCH OF THE LEAVES AS I
WALKED TO SCHOOL ON A CRISP FALL MORNING, AND I CAN BARELY REMEMBER WHAT I
HAD FOR DINNER LAST NIGHT.
GROWING OLDER IS LIKE THE CHANGING OF THE SEASONS. MY SPRING AND SUMMER
SEASONS HAVE GONE AND I AM NOW IN MY THIRD, MY "FALL".
WHEN I WAS IN SPRING, I HAD NO POSSIBLE IDEA OF AGING. MY GRANDPARENTS WERE
JUST--- OLD.
IN MY SUMMER, I WAS WAY TOO BUSY DEALING WITH MY OWN GROWING GARDEN. A
HUSBAND AND TWO WONDERFUL SONS. I COULD'NT HAVE BEEN FURTHER FROM FALL.
BACKYARD BAR-B-QUES, FAMILY GET TOGETHERS, PTA MEETINGS, MEASLES, CHICKENPOX,
LITTLE LEAGUE. BUSY, BUSY, BUSY.
AND THEN IT HIT !!!!
THE BOYS GREW INTO MEN AND I GREW INTO FALL. I HAVE BECOME MY GRANDMOTHER.
SLOWER. I COOK ALOT, READ ALOT, STILL WORK ALOT. BUT, I HAVE DEFINITELY BECOME
FALL.
OUT FOR A WALK IN THE MORNING, THE LEAVES ARE BEGINNING TO TURN. THE "CRUNCH"
IS BACK. IT SOUNDS LIKE YOUTH.
I'M FALL, AND IT'S OKAY !

CERAM IC CLUB NEW S
Our club meetings have changed: we will now only have
meetings every other month. They are always held on the first
Tuesday of every other month at 2:00 pm in the club house
conference room. There are no meetings, June, July or August.
Anyone can attend and sit in on our meetings and also meet
some active members of the club before or after the meeting. If
you are thinking about joining or want to ask some questions or
just get a tour of the ceramic room, this is an opportune time.
New Change in open times of the ceramic room: The
Ceramics Club now will be open on Mondays, 11 to 2, and
Thursdays, 4 to 8 pm. with a member or several members
working on their projects. Anyone who is interested in our club
is welcome to stop by and take a look at some of the ceramics
that are finished and some pieces we are still working on.
You can call the following senior member for a view of the
ceramic shop and or just to ask questions. Feel free to call
Melody Peterson at 266-2607, or if she is not available we
will ask another training member to help you.
