Breaking Open of the Word We Need You!

We are in need of someone to assist with “Breaking Open of the Word” with our RCIA participants

during the10:00 Sunday Mass. As part of the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults)

process, participants will leave Mass after the homily to gather and discuss, in detail, the readings in preparation for their Baptism and full membership in the church in the spring.

If you feel the Lord’s invitation to share your faith in a more straightforward way, this is the ministry for you!

Please call the Parish Office and ask for Fr. Declan or email [email protected].

Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

God gives us an invitation to have an abundant life. The banquet is ready and the tables are set. Come! There is so much

to attend to in the everydayness of our lives. We have plans, after all. There is never enough time and so much that needs to be done. There is work, children, and grandchildren, paying the

bills, planning for retirement, figuring out the details of our next vacation, making sure we are on top of our game with

work, planning social engagements, answering emails, texts, and getting our latest pictures on Facebook. There is always

something. What is this about some banquet? I need another party and commitment like a hole in the head. I

can’t manage what I already have, and someone is asking me to do more! Seriously? I saw the invitation; I think it came in the mail the other day. Did I leave it on the table? Oh wait, it may have gotten thrown away. I can’t remember. In any case, I’m managing things pretty well on my own, I think. Thanks for

thinking of me, but no thanks. My life is only as good as I make it and I have to be sure that all is in order! Oh, another

invitation came today! This guy’s being persistent. Now, I’m getting angry. I wish he would just leave me alone and stop

with this invitation nonsense. I woke up feeling a bit unsettled this morning. The kids have left the house, the grandchildren are busy with their lives, my

retirement fund is losing ground, I’m worried about my health, folks have moved away, and I find myself alone. I am unhappy.

I remember getting an invitation some time ago to a banquet promising new life and life in abundance. Did I miss

something? I think I may have. I am finally discovering that life is not about me and my world. I think I’ve ignored the God

who made me and the God who is the reason for my life, my hope, and my joy. It’s always been about me. I have not really

discovered Eternal Love. Is the invitation still open? Can I come to the banquet?

I think I’d like to come. ©LPi

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO OTHERS

“The fact that I can plant a seed and it becomes a flower, share a bit of knowledge and it becomes another’s, smile at someone and receive a smile in return, are to me continual spiritual exercises.” ~ Leo Buscaglia

I was in my car last week doing errands and, as I drove from place to place, was listening to the radio. There was a discussion about the incredible need human beings have of touch. We all know that touching and being touched carries incredible amounts of communication. Touch can mean care. Touch can mean concern. Touch can mean comfort. Touch can mean pleasure.

The problem, as the program continued, was that, due to the pandemic, many people were suffering because of a lack of touch. We all know that, at the present time, it is highly inadvisable to touch others. We are being reminded constantly to keep our distance from one another. This has even gone into households. Family members have hugged each other less during these past months out of fear of giving anything to each other.

A simple touch can say so much. Buscaglia reminds us that many simple things can say so much. A smile, a quick hello, a small, kind act and other small or brief gestures can convey good will and happiness to others.

If it doesn’t take much to make someone feel happy or valued, why do we not engage in those practices more in our daily lives?

I think it might be because too many people nowadays are too busy taking care of themselves. There is a lot of tension and fear in our world. People are doing everything that they can to make sure that they are all right. Just think back to the toilet paper and paper towel hoarding of a few months ago.

When people become so focused on themselves, they may only engage in practices to help others if there is something in it for them. Jesus reminded His followers on a pretty regular basis that they should not worry about what was in it for themselves but, rather, that they should care about others and do all that they could for others.

When it comes down to it, it’s totally up to us. We have the ability to make others feel valued and important. It doesn’t take a whole lot of work to do so. Are we going to do it?

FAITH ACTION: Think of people with whom you interact on a daily basis. If any are in need, do something to let them know you care.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE A young woman ducked into an exclusive (no kids allowed) dress shop leaving her six-year-old son in charge of his two-year-old sister. When she finally emerged, she saw her son pushing a different stroller, her daughter nowhere in sight.

“What are you doing?!” she exclaimed. “That’s not your sister!” “But, mommy,” he replied, “this is a much better stroller.”

MARK YOUR CALENDARS, PLEASE Halloween this year is on a Saturday. We have been waiting to announce anything until we found out for sure whether or not our community would have Trick or Treat this year due to the pandemic. That answer, apparently, is a resounding “Yes, we are!” Since Trick or Treat is set in Munster for 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 31st, the Vigil Mass for Sunday will take place at 4:00 p.m. as we generally have done in the past. That way, you will have a chance to go to Mass and then get back to your homes for the event. If you wish, you may bring your children dressed for Trick or Treat. After Mass, Fr. Declan will give them a blessing for safety as well as their first treat of the evening. They may then go and participate in Trick or Treat in the community.

WHEN WILL IT END? If you are like me, you are wondering when this pandemic will end. It feels as if it has lasted half a lifetime already and, from the looks of it, it has a while to go yet. As the numbers rise in many states and in our own communities, there is still much hunkering down that needs to be done. Many things are being canceled or severely restricted in the process. This is to ensure that we remain as safe as possible. Don’t lose heart. One day, we will look back on this and be extremely grateful that it is over. In the meantime, follow all the precautions. When in public, wear a mask. Wash your hands often. Sanitize areas regularly. Practice social distancing. Don’t let your guard down. As they say, this too shall pass.

Stewardship Thoughts

Focusing on Jesus

It has been said that whatever we think, we become. The following are some thoughts from John Ortberg, author of the book "If You

Want to Walk on Water You've Got to Get Out of the Boat":

• "Our ability to live in hope, to remain focused on Christ during the storm, is largely dependent on what we feed our minds. This is

how we are able to focus on Jesus rather than the storm." • "Law of Cognition: You are what you think. The way you

think is the single most determining thing about you: your attitudes, emotions, behavior and health."

• St. Paul in his letter to the Romans said this, "Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your

mind, that you may discern the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect."

If you are not a part of a Ministry at St. Thomas More Church, please consider joining and sharing with others.

St. Vincent De Paul Society Challenging times abound! Many have encountered challenges recently due to job loss, illness,

death of a loved one or an assortment of issues related to COVID. This does not even

include the everyday trials that many face!

The St. Vincent de Paul Society has been active on the front lines

throughout the pandemic, assisting those in need with food, utility and rent/mortgage payments for our neighbors. All of this would not be possible without the very generous donations of our parish & community through food and monetary contributions. Thank you to all who support our ministry. Please contact the

Parish Office if you know someone in need. Calls confidential.

Items Needed for Our Pantry: Please be as generous as possible.

Please check the expiration dates before donating. To learn more about SVDP please call Terry at (219) 836-8610.

“My God will supply whatever you need…” Philippians 4:19

God really does provide for those who are grateful and generous. This is very difficult for people that don’t live a stewardship

lifestyle to believe. People are skeptical and say it’s just coincidence. If you are skeptical, try living a stewardship lifestyle for just one month – be generous with your gifts of time in prayer, talent in charitable works and treasure and see how God provides

for your needs.
