WHEN I GROW UP

(The show starts with some children playing on stage - 6 students -. Some with building blocks, some painting and some playing with a ball or another object).

Child 1: I love playing.

Child 2: Me too. I wish we could do this all the time

Child 3: Well, we are children. That’s what we do.

Child 4: Yes, but we need to go to school too.

Child 5: I like school. It’s fun

Child 6: Oh no. It’s very boring.

Child 1: School it’s ok.

Child 2: Do you know what I don’t like?

Rest of the Children: What?¿? (altogether)

Child 2: Growing up

Child 3: Growing up is good. You get to do what you want.

Child 4: I don’t think that it’s ok being an adult.

Child 5: You have to get up early everyday

Child 6: And you have to work for many hours.

Children: (altogether) Being an adult is dull. You cannot play

(From the other side of the stage, we can see now a market stall pushed by an extravagant woman. It looks like an ice-cream parlor, but it isn’t).

Child 1: Hey look, there is an ice-cream stand over there.

Child 2: I love ice-cream. I want to buy one.

Child 3: Me too but I haven’t got any money.

Child 4: Don’t worry. I can buy you one.

Child 5: I’d love to have one too.

Child 6: Let’s go then.

Page 2: WHEN I GROW UP.doc

(The children go to the stall and greet the woman. They are very excited)

Child 1: Hello, we would like to buy an ice-cream.

Child 2: Have you got strawberry?

Child 3: And vanilla?

Child 4: Are they very expensive?

Child 5: I love chocolate.

Child 6: Have you got some?

(The woman then replies)

Woman: Hi everyone. Good morning!!!! Please don’t forget your manners!!!

All the Children: Sorry!!! Good morning Miss!!!!

Woman: Sorry!!!. I don’t sell any ice-cream

All the Children: OOoooohhh (disappointed)

Woman: But I have something much better for you

Child 1: Better than ice-cream? (puzzled)

Child 2: Is it a cake?

Child 3: Or maybe a Nintendo console?

Child 4: Video games?. I don’t think she sells video games.

Child 5: Perhaps balloons.

Child 6: I love balloons.

(The woman looks at them. She opens her eyes and speaks almost like whispering, as she was telling them a secret).

Woman: I sell dreams… I can do magic and tell you the future.

Child 1: Magic? The future?

Child 2: I don’t understand but I like magic.

Woman: I can tell you what you are going to become when you grow up.

Child 3: When I grow up?¿?....

Child 4: I want to be the same person.

2 | P a g e

Page 3: WHEN I GROW UP.doc

Woman: Of course… You will all be the same person. However, you will be adults. You will have children, a job, and many other things.

Child 5: I don’t want to work.

Child 6: I want to be a child and play for the rest of my life.

Woman: But You can’t do that. Sometime you will have to grow up and work to be able to earn a living. It is nice to do something and you can still play when you grow up.

All the Children: Ok (resigned)

Woman: Ok. Then, let me explain how this works. Do you see this box here?. You only have to put your hand inside and grab an object. Then, take it out and that item will tell you what you are going to become when you grow up.

Child 1: Just like that?

Child 2: That’s too easy (like saying that’s not very interesting)

Child 3: I don’t believe what she’s saying (to the rest of the children)

Woman: Why don’t you try yourselves? I swear I am telling you the truth.

Child 4: Ok why not?

Child 5: Maybe she is right.

Child 6: Let’s give it a try.

Woman: Ok. Who wants to be the first one?

Children: Me, me, me, me..

Woman: Ok, ok ok… let’s do it this way. (she lines the children up) Eeny, meeny, miny, moe Catch a tiger by the toe If he hollers make him pay, fifty dollars every day. (Child 1 – the boy’s been chosen)

Child 1: Coool!!! I can start playing!!!

All the children except Child 1: Boooo!!!!

Woman: Don’t worry… You will all have the chance to take something out of the box. (now speaking to him). Come on, come closer. (the child goes to the stall with a little bit of suspicion). Don’t be shy. You are going to love this.

Child 1: So, now what do I do, Miss?

Woman: (taking the lid off the box) You just need to close your eyes, put your hand in the box and take out an item. (the boy does what he has been told very slowly, with some fear)… That’s it, very good. (now we can see how the boy’s taking out something).

Page 4: WHEN I GROW UP.doc

Child 1: Wow!!! What a nice hat !!! (it’s a firefighter hat)

Woman: Mmmmm very interesting… a firefighter hat!!!

Child 1: Firefighter!! That’s nice!!! (the child starts walking towards the middle of the stage alone. The rest of the children with the woman stay on one side of the stage, almost being unnoticed watching the other side of the stage).

(While Child 1 places himself in the middle we start listening to some music. Along with the music comes a group of 6 children dressed as firefighters)

Firefighters:

The heat is onon the street

inside your headon ev'ry beat.

And the beat's alivedeep inside

the pressure's highJust to stay alive

'cos the heat is on.

Ohooho

Firefighter 1: Where’s the fire?

Firefighter 2: Don’t worry, we came to rescue you.

Firefighter 3: Everything’s going to be ok.

Firefighter 4: We are the firefighters

4 | P a g e

Page 5: WHEN I GROW UP.doc

Firefighter 5: We are brave

Firefighter 6: Nothing will harm you.

Child 1: Hi!!! I didn’t call you

Firefighter 1: Somebody phoned us

Firefighter 2: And they said there was a fire here

Firefighter 3: (telling the other firefighters) Oh no. Not another cat on top of a tree.

Firefighter 4: Or a child with the head in the wrong place.

Firefighter 5: Why did you call us?

Firefighter 6: Yes, come on. Tell us. We don’t have the whole day.

Firefighter 7: They can call us at any moment

Child 1: I was only walking and I heard sirens. And there were you.

Firefighter 1: So… Who called us?

Child 1: I don’t know. But I know I want to be a firefighter when I grow up.

Firefighter 2: Do you want to be a firefighter like us?

Firefighter 3: You will need to study a lot.

Firefighter 4: And practice a lot of sports.

Firefighter 5: You must be very brave

Firefighter 6: And not fear anything.

Child 1: What do firefighters do?

Firefighter 1: We put out fires.

Firefighter 2: We rescue people when the river grows.

Firefighter 3: We help animals which are lost.

Firefighter 4: We help people in accidents.

Firefighter 5: We work out a lot. (it means that they do a lot of exercise)

Firefighter 6: We drive a very nice red truck.

Firefighter 7: And we also get a lot of free time.

Child 1: I am not afraid of anything.

5 | P a g e

Page 6: WHEN I GROW UP.doc

Firefighter 1: Are you sure?.

Firefighter 2: Do you want to come with us?

Firefighter 3: You can have a close look…

Firefighter 4: Come along, we have to help an old lady

Firefighter 5: You will have fun.

Firefighter 6:Yes, and when you grow up you can drive the red truck

Firefighter 7: And people love you

Child 1: Yes, please, let me go with you… (begging)

All Firefighters: Then… let’s go

(now we can hear sirens and the children go out of the stage with the sound of the sirens and some music, altogether in a line, putting their hands on the shoulders – like a train – making the sound of the sirens with their voices)

(once, the woman of the stall and the five other children come back to the stage)

Child 3: Can I be the next one please?

Woman: Well, I don’t think it’ll be a problem, but we need to ask the others first if it’s no problem. (now, talking to the other children). Is it ok for you if she’s the next one?

Rest of the Children: (Not very happy). Ooook

Woman: Very good!!!. Well, what do you have to tell them?

Child 3: (looking at the other children) Thank you very much.

Rest of the Children: You’re welcome

Woman: Ok, let’s not waste time. (The woman offers her hand to the girl). Come, take my hand and I will show you your future.

Child 3: What do I have to do?

Woman: You just have to do the same thing your friend did before. So now, close your eyes and put the hand into the box.

(The child does so. When she finishes, we can see she is holding a stethoscope).

Child 3: Oh my God!!! I don’t know the name but I know it belongs to a …

Woman: That’s it!!! A doctor!! You are going to be a doctor when you grow up.

6 | P a g e

Page 7: WHEN I GROW UP.doc

Child 3: How nice!!! (The child slowly starts walking of the stage while she is looking at the stethoscope and up in the air imagining). It’s so nice. I love their uniform and their … (suddenly she stops… she can see a child lying down on the floor)

Child 3: (she kneels down and starts shaking the person in order to wake him/her up). Hallo!!! Are you alright??

(now the music of ER can be heard while we see a doctor and four nurses running onto the stage)

Doctor: (talking to Child 3, he also kneels down; in the meantime the nurses move child 3 away so as to have more room to attend the patient). What happened?

Child 3: I don’t know. I was walking and…

Nurse 1: Doctor, Doctor (holding the patient’s hand by the wrist) I am getting a pulse

Nurse 2: Doctor, Doctor (with a hammer hits the knee of the patient and he/she kicks) He is showing a reaction.

Nurse 3: Doctor, Doctor (slapping the patient’s face) He’s becoming conscious.

Doctor: Sir/Madam. Are you alright?

Patient: Where am I?

Doctor: You are in the park lying on the street.

Nurse 1: Open your mouth, please (the patient does so) MMMM, your tongue is red.

Nurse 2: That’s good! Isn’t it, doctor?

Nurse 3: Of course it’s good. No need to ask him/her.

Patient: Am I ok, doctor?.

Doctor: (standing up and full of himself) Well we have to run some analysis and… Nurses, will you please attend the patient. I need to speak to this young lady.

Child 3: This is so exciting. You are a doctor.

Doctor: Isn’t it nice?

Children 3: I want to be a doctor, you know?

Doctor: Well it’s a nice job. You can cure people.

Nurse 1: We do that too (in a not so nice tone of voice)

Doctor: You can vaccine people. So they don’t get sick.

Nurse 2: We do it!!. He just prescribes

7 | P a g e

Page 8: WHEN I GROW UP.doc

Doctor: You can talk to many people. You can even create new medicines.

Nurse 3: That’s all you do… talking

Patient: But doctor. Am I going to get better?

Child 3: I love it.

Doctor: And you get nice things (showing ball pens and other stuff given by pharmaceutical companies).

Child 3: Wow!! How nice!!

Nurse 1: (clearing her throat) Excuse me… (now she pushes the doctor away) They always get all the credit

Nurse 2: We have to do all the hard work.

Nurse 3: And they get better paid

Nurse 1: We put the injections

Nurse 2: We take the patient’s temperature

Nurse 3: We have to do all the paperwork

Child 3: Oh I see. I didn’t know that

Nurse 1: We are tired of being always behind a doctor

Nurse 2: We need to tell you

Nurse 3: That, sisters, we are doing it for ourselves

Sisters are doing it for themselves

(Eurythmics)

Now there was a time when theyused to say

That behind every - "great man."There had to be a - "great woman."

But in these times of change youknow

That it's no longer true.So we're comin' out of the kitchen'Cause there's somethin' we forgot

to say to you (we say)

Sisters are doin' it for themselves.Standin' on their own two feet. And ringin' on their own bells.

Sisters are doin' it for themselves.

Sisters are doin’ it for themselves (repeats).

Page 9: WHEN I GROW UP.doc

(Now the nurses, the doctor and Child 3 start going out of stage at the end of the song, while the music fades. As they do they keep on singing the song. The patient is still lying onstage)

Patient: (stands up) But doctor, doctor. Nurse…. Am I going to get better?.... No wonder, (resigned) National Health Service.

(He also goes out of stage).

(Now we can see the woman of the stall and the other four children)

Woman: I love my job. Another happy child. Now, who’s going to be next?

Child 5: Miss, I’d like to be next. You see, I have to go home early. My mother is going to get angry if I am late again

Woman: Well, I guess we will have to let you go first then. (to the rest of the children) Do you agree?.

Rest of the Children: Yes, we do.

Woman: Now, come with me… let’s see what the future brings for you

Child 5: I am afraid

Woman: There’s nothing to be afraid of sweetheart. You saw the other two children. They enjoyed themselves very much. Come on!!! Don’t be shy!!! I am here with you

Child 5: Ok. I’ll do it. (the child repeats the same process as the two previous children. When he takes out his hand, we can see a construction safety helmet).

Woman: Wow, that’s a nice helmet.

Child 5: Yes, I like it very much. What does this mean?

Woman: I guess you have to find out yourself.

Child 5: Ok (looking at the helmet, he starts to walk to the center of the stage). This has something to do something with building.

(now we listen to the music of the seven dwarfs, Aiho, aiho to make your troubles go, …..)

Child 5: Oh (surprised) hello!

9 | P a g e

Page 10: WHEN I GROW UP.doc

(The construction workers bring tools with them and they are wearing uniforms for constructing and helmets)

All workers: Aiho, which means hello

Child 5: Where are you going?

Worker 1: We need to go to the highway

Worker 2: We have to repair the asphalt.

Worker 3: Someone had an accident yesterday and broke the fence.

Worker 4: Thanks God everyone was fine

Child 5: Wow. It sounds as if you have a lot of work to do.

Worker 1: Yes, we have. If we do not have it ready today, another accident might happen.

Worker 2: And that wouldn’t be nice

Worker 3: We love our job. Many people don’t realize how much we work

Worker 4: Yes, they think that roads are built in one day.

Worker 1: And we have to get up early

Worker 2: We also have to work in the sun or under the rain

Worker 3: For many, many hours

Worker 4: But it’s ok. We love our job

Child 5: That doesn’t sound too much fun to me.

Worker 1: Yes, it is. It’s a hard job. That’s true

Worker 2: But we make lots of friends

Worker 3: We get to build really nice places

Worker 4: Even this park you are playing in

Worker 1: We don’t work on bank holidays

Worker 2: If you don’t like studying, this is a good option.

Worker 3: And you can sing and work at the same time

Worker 4: Building is the best of all jobs.

Child 5: Oh well… Now it sounds better

10 | P a g e

Page 11: WHEN I GROW UP.doc

Worker 1: I am a carpenter. I work with wood and make nice doors and pieces of furniture

Worker 2: I am an electrician. I install all the cables so that you can get electricity at your place

Worker 3: I am a plumber. I install all the pipes so that you can get water

Worker 4: I am a technician. Thanks to me, you can watch TV, use your phone or write emails.

Child 5: Very interesting!!! (wondering)… Now from all these options… What would I like to become?

Worker 1: You don’t need to make up your mind right now.

Worker 2: You can come along if you wish

Worker 3: And see for yourself.

Worker 4: Perhaps that might help

Worker 1: Come on, put your helmet on

Worker 2: Safety is very important.

Worker 3: Don’t think about it. Come with us!!!!

Worker 4: We are in a hurry

Child 5: Nice (very happy)… Let’s go!!!

(The woman and the rest of the children come on stage again).

Woman: Well, well, well… Do you mind if I start with this lady here first?. (pointing to Child 2)

Rest of the children: No, that’s ok.

Child 2: Oh, thank you very much.

Woman: That’s so kind of you

Rest of the children: Never mind.

Child 2: I am so excited. (clapping with excitement)

Woman: (laughing) I can see. Ok then, let’s see what your future will bring you. Are you ready?

Child 2: Yes, Miss

Woman: Then come here. Close your eyes, put your hand in and breathe.

(The child then does what she is been told and we can see how she is taking out a mortarboard – graduation cap).

Child 2: What is this?

Woman: That’s a cap

Child 2: What for?

Woman: You will have to go and see yourself.

(the child looks at the cap and starts talking to herself)

Child 2: A cap?

(Suddenly a teacher followed by some students comes onto the stage)

Teacher: Are you the new child?

Child 2: The new child? (surprised)

Student 1: Yes, we are waiting for her

Child 2: No, I was here and…

Student 2: (to the other children) You don’t want to go to class

12 | P a g e

Page 13: WHEN I GROW UP.doc

Student 3: Too bad for her

Student 4: We are having so much fun

Student 5: I love school

Student 6: Me too. We play a lot of games

Child 2: I want to be a teacher

Teacher: Do you want to be like me?

Student 1: That would be nice

Student 2: Our teacher is very funny

Student 3: She teaches us a lot of things

Student 4: We are learning the alphabet

Student 5: The days of the week

Student 6: And the months of the year.

Child 2: How cool!

Teacher: Silence children!.

Student 1: You must be patient

Student 2: Study many things

Student 3: Take care of us

Student 4: Mark exams

Student 5: Prepare classes

Student 6: And you have to love children

Child 2: I like children

Teacher: Do you like all those things?

Child 2: Yes, miss

Teacher: Then you will be a good teacher

Student 1: Do you want to teach English?

Student 2: Or history?

Student 3: Or science?

13 | P a g e

Page 14: WHEN I GROW UP.doc

Student 4: Maths?

Student 5: Physical Education?

Student 6: Or maybe Arts?

Child 2: I don’t know

Teacher: Don’t worry… you still have time

Child 2: Can I go with you?

Teacher: if you wish….

Student 1: Yes, come along

Student 2: You can teach us

Student 3: We want to learn new things

Student 4: About the world

Student 5: About nature

Student 6: About life

Teacher: Ok children, leave her alone

Child 2: It’s ok miss. I am patient.

Teacher: Ok then, let’s go. But first we will sing a song. A song of love and friendship.

We all stand together

14 | P a g e

Page 15: WHEN I GROW UP.doc

(Now they all leave the stage).

(The woman and the other two kids come on stage)

Both children: Now it’s our turn.

Woman: Ok what about starting with you? (pointing to child 6)

Child 6: Really? (looking at both Child 4 and Woman as looking for approval)

Child 4: Ok, I don’t really mind.

Woman: Ok then, come to my stall (she gives her hand to the child and they both go to the stall together). Come on, put your hand into the box. But don’t forget to close your eyes.

Child 6: I am so excited… (Now we can see how the child is taking out something) It’s a pilot’s hat.

Woman: Yes and I hope you are not afraid of heights because you will be piloting a plane, or maybe you will become a steward.

Child 6: Wow, pilot my own plane… (goes to the center of the stage. We listen to the sound of an airplane and we see some kids entering the stage dressed as pilots).

Pilot 1: Hello, do you know where is gate A1?

Pilot 2: We need to take the flight to New York

Pilot 3: It leaves in half an hour

Child 6: Wow, that’s so nice

Pilot 1: To be a pilot you have to be hard-working

Pilot 2: You have to be a very responsible person

Pilot 3: You can’t be afraid of heights

Pilot 4: And most of all, you have to love flying

Child 6: Well, I think I can do or be all that

Pilot 1: Ok. Then, what are you waiting for?

Pilot 2: We have a flight to take

Pilot 3: We can show you the plane’s pit

Pilot 4: And even how to fly the plane.

Woman: Well, well, well. It’s been a very long day. I guess I must be going now.

Child 4: But, what about me?

Woman: Oh my God!!! I’m so sorry. I almost forgot you. Of course, I will not leave before you getting to know about your future.

Child 4: Thank you, miss.

Woman: Ok come with me. You are the last one and for you I have a very special one.

Woman: Yes. Come with me. I am sure you are going to love it. (going to the stand). Now, you know the drill.

Child 4: Yes, I close my eyes.

Woman: Very good.

Child 4: I put my hand in the box.

Woman: That’s it!

Child 4: And…. (The child takes out a cook’s hat)… Wow!!! It’s a cook’s hat.

Woman: Exactly!!! You are going to become a cook.

Child 4: But I never cooked before.

Woman: Don’t worry. You’ll learn. You have plenty of years ahead of you.

Child 4: A cook (walking to the stage). I think it’s nice.

Waiter 1: (Running onto stage with a tray on one hand)…. Sorry, sorry.

Waiter 2: Out of the way, please

17 | P a g e

Page 18: WHEN I GROW UP.doc

Child 4: (Getting off the way) Sorry

Cook 1: You are the customer, aren’t you?

Cook 2: Did you order the fish?

Cook 3: Or did you want the pasta?

Child 4: I just got here

Waiter 1: I don’t know where the customers are

Waiter 2: They were at the table two minutes ago

Cook 1: Oh no!!! What about the soufflé?

Waiter 2: At least we can work!

Child 4: That’s very kind of you. I want to be a cook too.

Cook 1: Wonderful!!!! I cook vegetables and make desserts.

Cook 2: My fish dishes are the best from Paris to Berlin

Cook 3: And my pasta is the best in Italy

Child 4: Is it difficult?

Cook 1: Oh no!!! You need a lot of practice

Cook 2: You also need creativity

Cook 3: And patience. But it’s so much fun…

Waiter 1: I prefer being a waiter

Waiter 2: You get tips

18 | P a g e

Page 19: WHEN I GROW UP.doc

Waiter 1: You meet many people

Waiter 2: And you can eat at the restaurant

Cook 1: Being a cook is better
