Quote of the week "Our government remains focused on driving forward with our priorities: building an Ontario with a strong economyso that our children can receive the best public education, our families are cared for in the best health care system, and where our vulnerable benefit from the best public supports.”Who said it? Premier Dalton McGuinty, on announcing the new Ontario Cabinet on January 18, 2010, signals his

government’s continuing commitment to Ontarians – all of whom are vulnerable in this time of economic recession.

Child Car e in On tario Faces Catastr oph ic Collapse:Prem ier M cGuinty… W hat’s the Plan? The Ontario Coalition for Better Child Care is raising the alarm that Ontario’s child care system is facing a direshortfall of funds.Four years ago in 2006, the McGuinty government took a one-time federal payment, spread it out over four years, and included that funding in Ontario’s core child care budget. But NOW the money is all used up!

The McGuinty government has had four years to plan for this situation – but so far, there is no indication that thegovernment intends to ensure this funding continues.Funding child care is a provincial responsibility. If Ontario does not replace this funding in its upcoming 2010 budget, municipalities across Ontario will have no option but to make dramatic cuts to child care subsidies.

Over 7,600 subsidies could be lost across Ontario. Toronto alone will have to cut 5,000 child care subsidies, starting this July. And low income families will be hurt the most. But the ripple effect of such drastic cuts will lead to a catastrophic collapse of our fragile child care system.

Whether parents pay full fees or have a subsidy, everyone will be affected.Impact on Families:

Thousands of low and middle income families will lose access to child care;As a result, parents may have to leave their jobs or postpone going back to school;Families may be forced to choose inadequate or unsafe options for their children.

Impact on Child Care Centres:

Child care centres will have empty child care spaces when subsidized spaces are cut; They will be forced to layoff staff and increase parent fees; Many centres will close within a matter of months, and ALL will become unstable!

The Provincial Government has announced full-day learning for 4 and 5 year olds, starting this September. Acollapsing child care system would be a disaster for full-day learning.Every community needs affordable, accessible, high quality child care for children of all ages. The province alreadylacks sufficient child care spaces to meet the needs of Ontario parents. We can’t afford to lose a single space.
