Info-Desks: An intro to topics on offer

• Funder Open Access Mandates & OA in general

• (Open) Data & Data management• Open Peer Review• New ways of measuring output & impact• Your Visibility on the Net

Page 4: What’s on Offer at the Info-Desks? Hannelore Vanhaverbeke Research Coordination Office

• What is Open Access?• The author(s) and right holder(s) of such contributions

grant(s) to all users a free, irrevocable, worldwide, right of access to, and a license to copy, use, distribute, transmit and display the work publicly and to make and distribute derivative works, in any digital medium for any responsible purpose, subject to proper attribution of authorship (community standards, will continue to provide the mechanism for enforcement of proper attribution and responsible use of the published work, as they do now), as well as the right to make small numbers of printed copies for their personal use (Berlin Declaration)

• If an article is "Open Access" it means that it can be freely accessed by anyone in the world using an internet connection. This means that the potential readership of Open Access articles is far, far greater than that for articles where the full-text is restricted to subscribers (Definition on Sherpa)

Page 5: What’s on Offer at the Info-Desks? Hannelore Vanhaverbeke Research Coordination Office

• Open Access & citation counts

Page 6: What’s on Offer at the Info-Desks? Hannelore Vanhaverbeke Research Coordination Office

• Funder OA Mandates• Obligation to provide OA to those publications realized with the support of the funder• FWO, BELSPO, HERCULES, ERC-FP7 & FP7 if clausule 39,

ERC-Horizon2020 & Horizon2020• Cf fiche in your folder

• In general this implies storing (‘archiving’, ‘depositing’) an electronic copy of your paper in a repository (‘bibliographic database’)• In Leuven: Lirias

Page 7: What’s on Offer at the Info-Desks? Hannelore Vanhaverbeke Research Coordination Office

• Funder OA Mandates• This is called ‘self-archiving’ and is what is meant by

Green Open Access• Gold Open Access: you publish in a fully OA journal

(with/without a fee)• Check Directory of Open Access Journals

• Hybrid Open Access: you publish in a ‘traditional’ journal but pay an APC (‘article processing charge’) to have your article as OA• Rather expensive – count on on avg 1,500 to 2000 euro/paper

• KU Leuven fully opts for Green – so do most of the funders

• However, be careful! You cannot just post anything on the net!

Page 8: What’s on Offer at the Info-Desks? Hannelore Vanhaverbeke Research Coordination Office

• (Funder) OA (Mandates)

• However, be careful! You cannot just post anything on the net!• Did you sign an agreement with the publisher?

• If yes – what exactly did you sign? Did you transfer all copyrights to the publisher?

• Respect copyright regulations!

• In general, the online posting of the publisher’s pdf is not allowed!• Most content on ResearchGate, Mendeley, Academia.eu etc is

illegal

Page 9: What’s on Offer at the Info-Desks? Hannelore Vanhaverbeke Research Coordination Office

• (Funder) OA (Mandates)

• What can you post then on the net?• Check your signed agreement• Check the most commonly consulted database with publishers’

OA policies: Sherpa/Romeo

Page 10: What’s on Offer at the Info-Desks? Hannelore Vanhaverbeke Research Coordination Office

• (Funder) OA (Mandates)

• Sherpa/Romeo http://www.sherpa.ac.uk/romeo/• Overview of copyright policies and self-archiving permissions

• Sherpa/Romeo

Page 12: What’s on Offer at the Info-Desks? Hannelore Vanhaverbeke Research Coordination Office

• (Funder) OA (Mandates)

• Sherpa/Romeo vocabulary• Pre-print = version before peer review• Post-print = version after peer review (final author’s

version)• Publisher’s version = version with publisher’s layout

• although mentioned in the definition of blue & green, almost never allowed

• Embargo = period during which access to the article is limited

Page 13: What’s on Offer at the Info-Desks? Hannelore Vanhaverbeke Research Coordination Office

• (Funder) OA (Mandates)

• Use Lirias• data are highly visible on the net

• = records in Lirias easily found through search engines such as Google (within 24hr in GS)

• Choose accessibility of your article/OA Support Desk• Point to your OA articles on who-is-who pages• Track impact

Page 14: What’s on Offer at the Info-Desks? Hannelore Vanhaverbeke Research Coordination Office

• Lirias OA workflow

‘IT’ Paper is accepted after

peer review

Upload this version in Lirias

Set access to ‘intranet’

OA Support desk checks OA

potential & adapts access to your paper (‘public’,

‘embargo’, ‘intranet’)

• (Funder) OA (Mandates)

• Use Lirias• Track impact

Page 16: What’s on Offer at the Info-Desks? Hannelore Vanhaverbeke Research Coordination Office

• OpenAIRE = OA infrastructure for research in Europe• harvests articles (and datasets) related to

ERC/FP7/Horizon2020 projects• from Lirias (if OpenAIRE ID is added)• for free

• Great extra visibility

• (Open) Data

• Open data requires good data!

• Good data are supported by data management plans (DMP)

• Data = understood as research data

• What are research data?

Page 24: What’s on Offer at the Info-Desks? Hannelore Vanhaverbeke Research Coordination Office

• (Open) Data

• research data• = all data (regardless of the form or the media in which

they may exist) necessary to support or validate a research project’s observations, findings or outputs

• implies the whole data spectrum

Page 25: What’s on Offer at the Info-Desks? Hannelore Vanhaverbeke Research Coordination Office

• (Open) Data

• KU Leuven is working on a research data policy• What are research data?

• Quality research data are• Accurate, complete, authentic and reliable• Identifiable, retrievable, and available when needed; • Secure and safe• Kept in a manner that is compliant with the institution’s policy or

the requirements of third parties

• What are the responsibilities of researchers and of the KU Leuven?

• research data must be available on request during the course of research/research project and min. 5 yrs after the end date of the project funding/after publication

Page 27: What’s on Offer at the Info-Desks? Hannelore Vanhaverbeke Research Coordination Office

• (Open) Data

• KU Leuven is working on a research data policy

• ... and on a DMP • Based on DMPOnline of the Digital Curation Centre (UK)• Online & free• KU Leuven customized

Info-Desks: An intro to topics on offer

• Open Peer Review• Open peer review means that, firstly, the reviewers' names

are included on the peer review reports, and secondly that, if the manuscript is published, the reports are made available online along with the final version of the manuscript. (BMC)

• In line with the trend towards more openness• Credit to researchers reviewing most often for free

Info-Desks: An intro to topics on offer

• New ways of measuring output & impact

• New digitally available forms of output (papers, datasets, software, peer reviews…) = more than the classical journal paper

Page 33: What’s on Offer at the Info-Desks? Hannelore Vanhaverbeke Research Coordination Office

Info-Desks: An intro to topics on offer

• New ways of measuring output & impact

• Digitally available output use = more than the classical Impact Factor (IF) and citations by peer• => Alt-Metrics

• “alternative” metrics• “article level” metrics

• ‘usage’: views, downloads, shares, likes, tweets…

• Your Visibility on the Net: Claim a unique identifier• Identify yourself• Identify your output• Take your dossier with you when moving

• identifier lasts longer than your email address• Submitting articles, projects – refer to this identifier

• ResearcherID – Thomson Reuters• ORCID ID – non-profit
