to 2016

Welcome to 2016, and I want to wish all our advertisers and readers a

blessed year ahead.

I am not a big believer in New Year’s Resolutions ... but this year, 2016, is

going to be different. I’ve found this list posted on my friend Terry Flynn’s

facebook page some time ago and it just grabbed me. 2016 will be all about

living in the moment and this is how I plan on doing it!

1. Do one thing at a time

2. Do it slowly and deliberately

3. Do it completely

4. Do less

5. Put space between things

6. Develop rituals

7. Designate time for certain things

8. Devote time to sitting

9. Smile and serve others

10. Make cleaning and cooking become meditation

11. Think about what is necessary

12. Live simply

celebrate this milestone, we

welcome a new sponsor. We

say goodbye and thank you

to TFM, our naming sponsor

for seven years and welcome

The Lilyfontein Red Baron

Tomato Trot & Cycle Tomato

Trot was founded on the

premise that town runners

are missing out on a great

opportunity to experience the

countryside while practising

their sport. Three Brakfontein

runners, John Brown, Rocco

Kruger and Danie Bessinger (of

Sunrise Park Run fame) got to-

gether with Ivan Dewing and

decided to share their passion

for running and the paradise

in which they ran. The rather

unusual name originated from

the environment in which the

run takes place; through the

tomato fields and farmlands

of the Brakfontein area or East

London. Thirty six runners

turned out for the inaugural

Page 30: What's On January 2016

As East Londoners we all share a love of the ocean and the beach. And now

there’s a community of passion-ate surfers who have made it their mission to set aside just an hour of their time every Saturday for those wanting to enjoy the salty air and do something out of the ordinary… ride waves!

“Salty Hour” is the brain child of Jono Bruton (Gonubie

resident, surfer and founder of lifestyle brand, Dead Reckoning) and DR brand ambassador Tyrell Johnson, who wanted to create an “enabled” environment for

those wanting to learn to surf and get guid-ance where needed.

If you want to know when the next Salty Hour is, subscribe to their informative Face-book page for regular updates. Bring a towel, a smile and leave your issues on the sand! oh, and did we mention

What time is it?

It’s SALTY HOUR!

Page 31: What's On January 2016

that Salty Hour is absolutely free… yip that’s right. Surprised? Don’t be. The ocean belongs to us all, our payment is respecting the ocean, being mindful of the effects we have on the ocean and doing our bit to keep it clean. Salty Hour encourage all the new and prospective surfers to find at least one polluting item on the beach to take back to the bin in the car park when exiting the water.

If having fun and trying new things for free is not convincing enough, Salty Hour have put together three reasons why you should at least try to surf!

#1 Surfing is a full body workout.

Lately it seems that every new workout fad makes two major claims—that it’s a full body workout and that it’s “the perfect blend” of cardio and strength training. While that may or may not be true of these new fads, surfing is the classic, tried-and-true total body workout. From paddling out to riding waves, every aspect of surfing tests your strength, balance, agility and stamina.

#2 Surfing teaches patience.

Any new sport or activity takes

time to learn and for most people surfing takes a little longer than, say, running or biking. Getting good takes a while, but when you hit milestones, like standing up for the first time or mastering a new move, the reward will be that much greater.

#3 Cross an item off your bucket list.

Whether or not you have a writ-ten-out bucket list, and regard-less of whether or not surfing is on that list, the premise of these lists is expanding your horizons, doing something that scares you and hopefully coming back with a story worth telling. Learning to surf or surfing in an extraordinary destination would be a great addition to that list, so write it down and then work on crossing it off.

This brilliant event is not to be missed. Even if you don’t get in the water, it’s never a bad idea to spend time at the beach, and an added bonus is spending it with people who are passionate about the ocean.
