I hope you get to enjoy some down time with family and friends or win your bowl game if you cover college football. I will be off to Detroit to hopefully watch Duke beat Northern Illinois. I am most excited that it is an indoor game! Some exciting news for AOASM is the rolling out of the new website soon. One of the most immediate features will be the ease of renewing your membership. Many features, including social media feeds, better navigation, member search, and others will highlight the much-improved site. We also welcome any feedback or features you would like to see, as we want the site to garner a lot of traffic and be a useful tool for education, communication, registration, and renewals. The site will work on mobile as well. The AOASM would also like any interested members who attend the annual ACOFP or OMED conferences to be involved with planning, moderating, etc. You may contact Becca Rodriguez if you would like to assist in these events. Have a wonderful holiday season! Best, Jeff Jeffrey Bytomski, DO, FAOASM President, American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine Renew Your AOASM Membership Today! Athletes and the Arts Written by: Dr. Carmen Jaramillo Dancing Away the Dizziness In my time working in the Emergency Department, I saw various cases ranging from chest pain to shortness of breath to lacerations to broken bones. One of our ER physician’s least favorite complaints, but one of the most common, was dizziness. But what does dizziness even mean? Whether it’s described as lightheadedness or that feeling that “the room is spinning,” we all have experienced it at one point in our lives. The reason my attending didn’t like this chief complaint was because the causes are so numerous and pinning down an exact etiology is not as straightforward as we would like it to be, especially in an emergency setting. In cases where the patient does describe the room as going around, we would work up the case for vertigo. The word “vertigo” is the sense that the environment is spinning. It is a form of dizziness caused by problems in the brain or inner ear. Different causes include sudden head movements, inflammation within the inner ear due to infection, Ménière’s disease, tumors, decreased blood flow, injury, or migraines. Symptoms include the sensation of disorientation that may be accompanied by nausea or vomiting, sweating, or abnormal eye movements called “nystagmus.” The prognosis depends on the cause, but what if there was a way to help alleviate those symptoms with the same techniques dancers use to gracefully do their pirouettes? Research from London has found the key to understanding dizziness is to recognize it is a problem from the brain as opposed to the ears. The brain is the most important organ for balance. The sensation of self-motion is said to be coming from the eye, and it is up to the brain to determine whether the individual is moving or the object in front of them. The most essential part of the brain for coordination and balance is the cerebellum, which was found to be smaller in dancers. The more experienced the dancer, the smaller the grey matter. Since dancers practice for many hours every day for years to never feel dizzy, their movements are always precise. They know exactly where their body is and can accurately estimate any correction. The findings from this research are looking into how ballet and dance techniques could help treat patients of chronic dizziness. The main task is to enhance brain plasticity through practice and training. Patients need to learn that they need to be making head movements as early as they can. With the help of both ballet and non-ballet movements, practice can make perfect. SAOASM Update Submitted by: Justin Stumph, National Vice Chair RowanSOM participated in its first mass event coverage at the Cooper-Norcross Run the Bridge 10K Run in Camden, NJ, to benefit the Larc School. Scott Weismiller OMS-II, Mike Suffredini OMS-IV, Ashley Koontz OMS-III, and Billy Baker OMS-II assisted EMS at the finish line first-aid tent. It was a great experience to learn more about race day medical care for runners! Doctors that DO Congratulations to Dr. Paul Saenz for his profile in the new Doctors that DO campaign through the AOA!
