Today’s Program… Guillain-Barre Syndrome

Today’s program was introduced by Patricia Buhrer as it was none other than her beloved son, John Buhrer, here all the way from Zurich, Switzerland to talk about his experience with Guillain-Barre Syndrome and to promote his book which will be coming out shortly, entitled Laughing All The Way. John’s wife, Rebecca Woods, was in attendance along with his beautiful little girls, Abigal and Anna. John gave us a little background about Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) and always included his great sense of humor.

GBS is an illness where the body’s immune system attacks itself via the peripheral nervous system. Unlike MS or Lou Gehrig’s disease, which at-tack the central nervous system, GBS leads to nerve damage elsewhere in the body (not centralized in the brain and spinal cord) which then causes loss of muscle function, tingling, weakness, and even paralysis. John has made an almost full recovery except for one thing: his smile. He has not regained the ability to use his facial muscles to smile and so his goal is to make other people smile. He has experienced endless support from his wife whom he lovingly named “Rebecca the Wonderful” as well as accolades from many other people as he has made progress in his re-covery. He still deals with fatigue as a result of GBS and never knows quite when it will hit.

This led into the narration of one of the chapters from his book entitled ‘Lost in the Jungle.’ I’ll do my best to summarize although it will not compare to having it narrated to us by the one and only John Buhrer.

It was December of 2014, six months after John went into the hospital after falling ill with GBS. He was in Phuket, Thailand on an expedition as part of a family vacation. He had been making considerable progress in walking/running since leaving the re-hab clinic in September of 2014. After days spent on the beach, he wanted a change and found an international chapter of his running club—with a promise of cold beer after a hot run under the sun in the jungle. The trailmeister promised a beautiful run through scenic trails and by a waterfall, assuring the group that he had carved out the path and left pieces of colored paper to mark the trail. John is usually accustomed to a trailmeister doing a final sweep of the trail when the run is done to pick up any lost souls that wandered along the way but this was not his experience that day in Thai-land. ~Continued on Page 5~

Transition to KCW Weekly News/Updates... A signup went around for anyone interested in attending the Wednesday evening sorting group (occurs the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month). Dan Dever wants to let everyone know to eat before coming to the work group this week. No dinner will be provided. Work will occur from 6-8pm and there will be special projects assigned to work on.

Meetings... Membership Growth and Education met after the general meeting today, October 9.

Hospitality… Dale Leslie visited Jim Wheaton to deliver the card we all signed and found him in good spirits with a smile on his face and wife Julie nearby. He’s in the memory care unit. Past Presi-dent Fred Sanchez fell ill during the Michigan/Michigan State game on Saturday with short-ness of breath. He was transported to U of M hospital and called Don Kossick from the ambu-lance. He suffered from a blood clot in his lung. He was expecting to be discharged from the hospital following treatment today. Fred made Dale promise to tell his joke… the scene is a monastery. The head monk chants to the other monks “good morning” and they chant back “good morning”. Then in the evening, the head monk chants “good evening” and they re-spond “good evening”. There was a mischievous monk who one morning decided to change things around. The head monk chanted “good morning” and this particular monk chanted “good evening”. The head monk was flustered and said to himself “gosh, one chanted even-ing…”

Fines… Dan Dever proposed fining Dale Leslie for the bad joke he passed along from Fred Sanchez. Ken Hillenberg then proposed a fine on everyone who does not appreciate Fred’s sense of humor. They both passed!

Happy Dollars… Jane Talcott gave a happy dollar for their 55th successful season of Washtenaw Camp

Placement Association. But then they realized they aren’t an association so they’ve dropped that as part of their name and got a new logo, courtesy of Jane DeLancey of DeLancey Designs.

Claire Dahl gave two happy dollars—one for her and John’s newest granddaughter, Matilda. Another was for the upcoming Rosie the Riveter event at Willow Run Airport. They are expecting over 5,000 Rosies! Let her know if you want to participate.

Larry French gave $10 happy dollars for his trip to Kansas where he attended the let-terman’s reunion for Kansas State University. He also went to his hometown and did some farming—he was in awe of the $500,000 price tag for one piece of machinery.

Luke Panning gave a happy dollar for the Saline Fiddlers who will perform on Satur-day, October 14th at 7pm at Concourse Hall with a contra-dance to follow at 8pm. Visit www.aactmad.org/events for more information.

Dan Burroughs gave a happy dollar for over 5,000 miles of driving out west to Utah. He also challenged the group to another ten happy dollars if someone could name the three presidential homes and libraries he saw on his drives. He returned to the mic later and as a group, all were identified (Truman, Eisenhower, and Hoover).

Dave LaMoreaux gave $100 happy dollars for his new pacemaker he got three weeks ago of which the doctors told him might take 3-6 months to notice the effects. Well, he’s happy to report he already feels so much better and has more energy. He also gave an additional happy dollar for MSU’s victory on Saturday!

Dale Leslie gave a happy dollar for Col Russell. His visitation was today (October 9) at 2pm at Nie Funeral Home.

Larry Dittmar gave a happy dollar for his trip to Africa, which he just returned from 3 days ago. While there, he met with the vice chancellor of the university and was told that he submitted the budget with enough money for a school of education. It passed and they have hired someone to lead the school. Next step is to hire a music director to be able to train people to be band, orchestra, and music teachers in Kenya. His dream happened before pigs could fly and he’s happily eating his words.

Today’s Program Continued from Page 1… They started running around 3pm and looked for 45 minutes for the first trail cutoff. During that time, the group he was with became ever smaller. Most turned around but he and a group of about five other people blazed ahead. The younger crew got ahead of him and eventually he came upon the waterfall but the marked trail went across rocks and water. John was not really wanting to get his feet wet as he had suffered a dancing mishap at the pool the previous night and cut his toe and was wary of tropical infections lurking in the water. He ended up taking a path that went up and around the waterfall… alone. He kept wandering and climbing along these hu-man-less trails. He was lost in the jungle. After many moments of self-reflecting, it was nearing 5:30 and he was losing sunlight. He took off his sunglasses to replace them with his wire-framed regular glasses only for them to snap and break. He put his sunglasses back on and threw up a Hail Mary to try to get down the steep hill, hoping to head toward water (and maybe a village where he could get help).

On his descent, he finally came across a brook with little small pieces of paper trapped in an eddy… the TRAIL! As he was blazing the trail once again, he came across an “elderly couple in their mid-60s.” They too were lost run-ners but had stayed on the trail. The woman needed help getting up the steep terrain so “Super Johnny” to the rescue. He helped her along the way until they ran into a group of huts with some locals. The helpless woman be-came invaluable as she spoke the native language and next thing you know, they were riding on a motorbike with a sidecar—tour-guide woman behind the driver and two men in a sidecar!

Upon return, other runners from the group had stuck around and were quite concerned. The trailmeister had re-turned to the trail to look for them. Lucky enough, some beer was saved and they were able to indulge. John took a taxi back to town and his wife “Rebecca the Wonderful” assumed her husband had been at sleazy bars with some of the running women. He assured her that was not the case and he simply got lost in the jungle!

President-Elect Wields the Gavel…

President-Elect William Hampton conducted his first Kiwanis Club meeting today. In addition, he rounded out the Happy Dollars total to $200 by adding $47.84 for his wife, Esther, who was in attendance with him today, and for all of us for putting up with him for the entire meeting.

Announcements Continued from Page 2… An election was held today for the position of Treasurer. There was one name on the ballot: Greg Meisner. There were

62 total ballots cast. 59 yes votes, and 3 no votes. Installation of our new Treasurer will happen at the next board meet-ing. Congratulations Greg!

Betsy Ford officially let Alan Burg know that the position as head of the Nominating Committee is now his as Immedi-ate Past President. Betsy also announced that a seat will be open on the board which Greg Meisner will be vacating with his new position as Treasurer.

There is a board meeting on Tuesday, October 10 at 5pm. If you are interested in attending for dinner, please let Ellen Webb know.
