San Tan Complex to Open Soon!Probably this month, and we are all excited about it. It is a beautiful facility with shiny new

equipment, state of the art tennis courts, pickle ball courts, a large swimming pool complex, more meeting rooms and lots of storage. As we begin using the complex, we might notice some things that could be added to make the facilities even better. The HOA committees and we in management are prepared for this. If you see ways to improve the complex, either with additional equipment or improved processes, let me know. If it is not something I can handle right away, I’ll refer it to the right committee and for a decision as quickly as I can.

As we discussed, the San Tan Complex in committee meetings, we soon discovered we had a problem – we didn’t have name for the original recreation complex. How do we distinguish between the two? We didn’t want to use words like old and new, or north and south. A couple of people independently suggested Springwood Complex for the original one, and the name seems to be sticking.

Children’s HoursThe Recreational Facilities Committee has made one decision in anticipation of the San

Tan Complex, and that is regarding children’s hours at the pool. When the San Tan pool opens, children’s hours will be as follows:

Springwood Pool: Noon to 2:00 PMSan Tan Pool: 4:00 PM – 6:00 PMThis decision increases the children’s hours to four per day, and it allows residents to go

to a pool without children at any time of day.

Springwood PoolEveryone who uses the pool knows you are supposed to shower before entering the

pool. When you first turn on the shower, the water is cold (except in the summer) until it runs long enough to heat up. This wastes water or causes people to take a very brief shower. The Recreational Facilities Committee authorized the purchase of a re-circulating system for the shower on the men’s side. It was installed at no cost to the HOA by homeowner Al Voss who is a licensed plumber. The idea is that if it is successful, we will install another on the ladies side, but we’ll have to wait for the fall to judge its value.

Tree TrimmingYou may have noticed many of the trees on the common land of the community are

marked with pink ribbons. Those are the trees selected for high tree trimming. Tree trimming under 12 feet is covered by the basic contract with New Creations, our landscape company, but trimming over 12 feet is extra. This is a significant expense and gets bigger every year as the saplings originally planted grow into mature trees. Over the years we have worked closely with New Creations to hold the price down. This year’s cost is over $9,000, paid for out of the operating budget.

ClubsBible Study

By: Ardella BurtmanA community Bible

Study is held every Friday morning at 9:00 AM in the Superstition Room. Every-one is welcome to attend.

This is an interdenominational study, open to men and women. We are careful to keep the class to one hour. Bring any translation of the Bible you prefer to use. There is no charge for the class and no book to buy – the Bible is our study guide with use of commentaries by trusted Christian writers.

The Bible study continues throughout the summer months. The only Fridays during the year we do not meet are official holidays, such as the 4th of July, Christmas Day, etc.

The group is currently studying the book of Ecclesiastes. We expect this study to con-tinue until November. Sylvia Hansen is the teacher for this session. We do not adhere to a strict schedule with our classes, but proceed as time and comments permit.

You are invited to join us for our Friday Bible studies. Even if you have or know you will miss some classes, you are welcome. Naturally, there is some building of content one class on the next, but also, in a sense, each class stands alone.

If you have any questions about the Bible study, please call Ardella Burtman at 480.993.3102.

Karaoke PartyBy: Doris Havelka

We had a great turn out at our monthly party on July 6. What a pleasant surprise to see so many on a Holiday weekend.

Special thanks to our DJ’s Kathy and Joe Fellhauer for providing the music. Linda sang “Crazy,” and it would have made Patsy Cline proud, and her rendi-tion of Linda Ronstadt’s “You’re No Good” was fantastic. The song performed by Ivan and Linda was anything but “Unforgettable!” Mike Gonzalez really got the party moving with “Wooly Bully,” to which there was much dancing in the aisle. Ladies, please do not to sing “Henry the VIII” again!! Where is the gong when you need it?!?!

Our next party is our third annual pool party on August 3. We will meet and sing in the Superstition Room from 7 to 9 PM, and then “retire” to the Springwood pool for a refreshing dip. REMEMBER, no glass containers allowed in the pool area. It might also help if you wear your swimsuit under your clothes.

Join us for an evening of fun and laughter with your neighbors on the first Friday of each month in the Superstition Room from 7-9 PM, bring your own drinks and ice. It is a great night out for only $1 per person.

Village PlayhouseBy Monica Rae Stein

Although some of our players are not here during the hot summer months, the rest of the Village Playhouse members have been meeting once a month to play theatre games, workshop and to do improvisational scenes. We have also been discussing ideas for our January performance. I know that seems so far away, but it will be here before you know it.

Beginning in September, we’ll be meeting on Monday evenings to read scripts and to plan our performance program. By mid-November our cast should be set, and it will be time to really get to work going through stage

blocking and memorizing lines. If you have always wanted to be on stage, here is your opportunity. Theatrical experi-

ence is preferred, but not necessary. If you can follow directions, work well with others, and enjoy laughing and having a good time, this may be just for you! Send me an email at [email protected] or give me a call at 668-3753 if you’d like to join us.

News From The Travel DeskBy: Judith and Wayne Konz. Terra Travel, 480-984-5782, [email protected]

The dog days of August are here. It’s time to do some relaxing and planning for the fall. We will be in Cancun most of August for our annual vacation. You can reach us by e-mail during this time.

Plan to join us as we sail from Buenos Aires to Santiago on the Star Princess for 13-nights on January 4, 2013. You can also spend an additional three nights in Buenos before the cruise. We will see Uruguay, several ports in Argentina and Chile and enjoy a day in the Falkland Islands. See lots of wildlife, glaciers and other beautiful scenery on this journey. Our group air space will only hold until September for this cruise.

On March 30, 2013, we will sail on the Sapphire Princess from Los Angeles to San Fran-cisco, Santa Barbara, Catalina Island, San Diego and Ensenada for 7 nights. We are taking a motorcoach to Los Angeles for this relaxing cruise.

We have a wonderful 13-day trip planned to Italy on April 27, 2013, with Collette Vaca-tions. We will visit Rome, the Amalfi Coast, Florence, Venice and Stresa. This will be a more relaxing trip as we spend at least 2 nights in each hotel visited. Air, sightseeing and many meals are included. You can just sit back and enjoy as all details are handled for you. Book by October 27 for a discount.

We have space on the Diamond Princess for a wonderful cruise and tour of Alaska start-ing on July 7, 2013. You will stay two nights in Fairbanks, two at Denali National Park and two at the Mt. McKinley Lodge before boarding the ship for a 7-night cruise. Contact us for all the details.

There is still very limited space on the Celebrity Expedition for the cruise and tour of the Galapagos Islands on November 8, 2013. Join us on this all-inclusive trip to this exciting destination.

Princess has a fantastic 28-day cruise roundtrip from Los Angeles to Hawaii, Tahiti and Samoa, and we have held some group space for April 1, 2014. Because it is so popular, this cruise always sells out very early so see us soon for details.

SSV Computer ClubBy: Jane E. Harrel, President [email protected]

It is almost time to meet at the San Tan Complex. I can hardly wait. I’m hoping to have a meeting there before the season begins in October. Maybe we can have the Pizza and Beer fest down there. But wait! That won’t happen for a couple of months. What are we going to do in the meantime????

For the August meetings, we will again visit Facebook and have a review of power point. We could also review Word and Excel. It will all depend on what you want to hear/see/do. Let us know! If nothing develops, we can always fall back on our “Ask the Expert” discussion panels.

Do you still have some VHS tapes that you haven’t converted to a DVD? The Com-puter Club has the machine to do the dub-bing for you. We also have a slide converter machine for those old slides. Contact John Sharp, 275-2516, to use the machines.

We also have a Special Interest Group for Mac users. They are on summer hiatus now, but you can still get your questions answered

by calling Dick Simmon, 949-1110, or Phil Kalfus,857-3040.

If you have a question and you are on our membership roster, remember you have access to [email protected]. Send an email like you normally would and ask your question. You will get an almost immediate response from one of our profi-cient gurus.

The Computer Club meets the first and third Wednesday of each month from May through September, and weekly starting in October. Right now we meet in the Supersti-tion Room, but come October, the San Tan Facility will be the place to be at 10:00 AM each Wednesday.

If you have any questions about computers, the Club or a prob-lem, please feel free to call me, Jane Harrel, 214-5264. I do make house calls.

Security Begins At Home The Value Of A Security Door

By: Ed Leahy, Chairman SSV Security CommitteeBecause we no longer live in those “good old days”

when you could leave your front door unlocked, you may want to consider adding a security door.

Security doors come in a variety of colors to blend in with the color of your home. In moderate weather, they also serve as a screen door. You can get a plain model or one with some decoration. Unlike a standard house door, secu-rity doors have sturdier locks on them and open outward. When the door is locked, they are difficult to penetrate. No matter if you live in a golf condo, twin home, town home, garden condo or a stand alone home, be sure to confer with the your architectural committee.

You can buy a security door at a number of places, or you can visit the Farnsworth sales office for their recom-mendation. If you are building a new Farnsworth home, they can help you build in whatever security devices you choose.

Of course, security doors make convenient places to hang solicitations. Neighborhood watch members should remove them from a neighbor’s door when you know they are away for some time. If you are not a member of a neigh-borhood watch and want to join one, please contact Mesa Police Crime Prevention Officer Karen Stegenga by email at [email protected], or telephone 480-644-5014.

While the final verdict is not yet in, there are reasons to believe that a home without a security door is less secure, but that finding is subject to further verification.

Never the less, it is safe to say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure

A Rounder’s RamblingsBy: Linda McAteer

“I’m sorry, but that status has expired.”Do you remember how badly you wanted to “grow up”

when you were a child? Being an adult was the ultimate goal in life. You looked forward to making all your own decisions, staying up as late as you wanted, and eating what – and when – you wanted. It all seemed like it would be magic, just to be an adult. I think that by the time we get to be adults, we have forgotten how magical we thought it would be. We just move along through life getting married, having kids, and getting grandkids until one day this happens...

My husband and I were at our daughter’s house to cel-ebrate our grandson’s 22nd birthday. We were standing in the kitchen when our daughter came in with her grandniece. She was trying to get the child’s camera working and could not get the back open. She said, “Mattie, let’s go find an adult to help us do this.” They turned and went out to the patio. She handed the camera to her husband to get it open while we watched in wonder. Evidently, our adult status has expired.

Village Voice Of HopeFrom the Springs Chapel Board

Sunland Springs Village Chapel worship services are held each Sunday morning at 9 AM in the SSV Auditorium. Fellow-ship follows the worship service with complimentary refresh-ments furnished by the Chapel. All SSV residents and guests are welcome to attend this non-denominational worship service.

As reported in last month’s Village Voice, Pastor Zeeb, who has been the Springs Chapel Pastor since its inception, is currently recuperating at home from injuries he received in a car accident in June. We are happy to report that Pastor Zeeb’s recovery is progressing much faster than originally anticipated, and we are looking forward to his complete recovery.

In Pastor Zeeb’s absence, the Springs Chapel membership is being served each Sunday by one of two excellent local pas-tors, Pastor Anthony Bryant or Pastor Larry Barringer.

Pastor Zeeb will welcome visitors at home, but requests a call to his home phone number (shown on the worship service bulletin) before your visit.

Pet Pals Summer Pizza Social

By: Mo ServaOur SSV Pet pals group enjoyed their sixth annual

Summer Social on Sunday July 15 in the Superstition Room. Thirty-five pet parents enjoyed pizza, salad, and dessert together. We shared information about each other and our pets, along with a few fun stories – some about the pets and some about their owners.

Sasha Grandquist’s dad, Larry, went home with the door prize - a $25 Walmart gift card, and Eli Myers dad, Dave, won $40 in the 50-50 raffle. A good time was had by all.

Our next social will be our Winter Chicken Pot Luck on Friday, January 18, 2013, in the new San Tan recreation room, with lots of door prizes and another 50-50 raffle.

Anyone who would like to join our membership of SSV pet parents can call Maureen “Mo” Serva at 480-984-8380 or email her at [email protected]. There is no commitment and there are no meetings – we are just a social group of Sunland Springs Village pet owners. Grand-parents of pets who visit SSV frequently on a regular basis are also welcome. We presently have dogs, cats, birds, and two tortoises in our membership.

Jottings, Cont.THIS AND THAT…

No B-I-N-G-O in August and September. The Bingo crews are taking a much deserved break. It will resume on October 4.

We are still collecting pull tabs for Ronald McDonald House, eye glasses for the Lions Club, cell phones for Com-munity Alliance Against Family Abuse and soup labels for a local school.

Opportunity knocks – we need crew to help with the Omelet Breakfast and the Summer Survivors party. Call the Activities Office at 354-8758 to offer your help.

Adopt-A-StreetBy: Kathy and Joe Fellhauer

We would like to thank all the volunteers who helped with the clean-up along Baseline Road between Signal Butte and Meridian on Saturday, April 21, 2012, at 7:00 AM. Sixteen volunteers did the job in just 45 minutes.

The workers were: Mildred Passig, Wally and Sha-ron Hoblit, Ed Houk, Jim Hazel, Merle Lenz, Karen and Dave Boik, Wayne Havelka, Dale and Martha Hawkins, Bob Wolf, Bill Neely, Pete Corr, Charles Packard, and Myron Huettig.

Thanks again to an awesome crew. We got the job done.

Just Pooling AroundComposed by Jim Ryan

“Sign up here if you want to play”Said the man to me one sunny day.

So I did what he said and took a chance. This wasn’t to be a country dance.

A call came in soon after that; It’s time for us to grab our hats.

The tables are open, it’s time to play.Let’s see who’s gonna win today.

Choose a stick that’s straight and true;

Chalk the tip with something blue;Polish that cue and rack those balls; There’s no smokin’ in this here hall.

Place the cue ball in the kitchen; To win this game I’m just itchin’Breaker, breaker spots are down;Hottest game in this here town.

You sink yours and I’ll sink mine;

We’re gonna have a real fine time.One ball’s down in the wrong pocket;

Spot that ball, then he’ll sock it.

Game’s going fine – think you’re winnin’;Hey old man, it’s just beginnin’Here’s the eight ball in the way;

Guess this just isn’t my day.

I’m standing there, hands in pockets,Cue stick leaning against the wall;

He says eight ball in the corner pocket,Then he sinks that one black ball.

One game’s over – two to go;Lose just three, and out you go.

There’s always more losersThan winners, you see,

So you always have plentyOf good company.

Renew With YogaBy: Christine K. Marcus

The ancient philosophy of YOGA is practiced here at SSV. YOGA integrates the body, mind and spirit. YOGA is not about doing perfect postures or poses, which are called asanas, it is about what we discover about our minds and body by doing YOGA.

Through the various poses, we increase flexibility, build core strength, stretch and strengthen muscles. The body-mind connection allows us to focus on our breathing to find relaxation and quiet the mind. RENEW with YOGA at SSV this summer.

Newcomers and experienced YOGIs are all welcome! We meet through the summer months on Mondays and Wednes-days at 8:30 to 10:00 AM in the auditorium. Come join us and meet our experienced, certified instructors LuAnn on Mondays and Linda on Wednesdays. Wear loose comfortable clothes to move in! YOGA is done barefoot. COST is $3.50 per session.

Any questions? Please contact Christine, [email protected].

Water VolleyballBy: Linda McAteer

The first Thursday Water Volleyball was a great success with thir-teen folks showing up for a fun filled evening. Thanks to all of you for help with the set-up and clean-up, and a very spe-cial thank you to the swimmers in the other pool who kept returning the ball when we hit it out of bounds, again, and again, and again.

We hope to continue play each Thursday from 7 – 8 pm until it’s too cold to play outside. Be-

lieve me, no skill is required, just a desire to laugh, get some exercise, and meet more of our wonderful neighbors.

Attention Arizona Homeowners!WHO ARE YOU GOING TO CALL?

Are you tired of roofing salesman knocking at your door?

The increased need for roof repairs has attracted“out of state”roofers, known as‘STORMERS.”

Many of these STORMERS are not licensed nor authorized to do business in Arizona and often use emergency repair situations to take advantage of homeowners. The Arizona Registrar of Contractors has referred to some STORMERS as “transient criminals.” Some of the STORMERS have tried to avoid the licensing problemby soliciting Arizona Contractors to“rent”a valid license to operate in Arizona. Any Arizona contractor who engages in such an activity is at risk to have his or her license suspended or revoked.

BEFORE YOU HIRE A ROOFING CONTRACTOR, ask these questions:Is the roofer licensed in Arizona, bonded and insured?

Is your roofer experienced and reputable—will he do the job right? If you have warranty issues, will the roofer be here next year, or will he be back in another state?

We are an Arizona company, ran with Arizona employees. We are not an out-of-state roofer, nor are we partnered with an out-of-state roofer. We will be here for you in the future.

So, if you need a roof repair, WHO ARE YOU GOING TO CALL?

PARAMOUNT ROOFING, LLC—480-292-7929for a free estimate by a local, licensed, bonded, and insured roofer. ROC 266468

Sunland Springs VillageHomeowners Association

(SSVHOA) MeetingJune 26, 2012

The meeting was called to order at 9:30 AM by John Lippert, HOA Manager. He stated that Jeff Decker, Vice President of the Board of Directors and Farnsworth Homes, would join the gathering soon. He also announced that a Town Homes HOA meeting would follow adjournment of this meeting.

Mr. Lippert proceeded to review the Financial Summary for the period ended May 31, 2012, which had been distributed to the audience. He noted that a portion of the Activities Account would be transferred to the Village Enhancement Fund (VEF) and the Capital De-velopment Fun (CDF). Of the $44,484 available, $35,587 will be deposited to the VEF and $8,897 to the CDF. A balance of $27,000 will remain in the Activities Account.

With regard to expenses of the HOA, he noted that the fund is well under budget but this will change when the San Tan Facility is opened. The current pool will be renamed the Springwood Pool. The propane is running low, and we put the contract out to bid. A resident is vice president of Arrow Propane, and his company proposed $1.43/gallon. Mr. Decker will be signing the contract with Arrow soon. A salt cell in the pool had to be replaced, and a treadmill in the Fitness Center was replaced rather than repaired.

Reserves and transfer fees are well over budget because of homes being sold by residents. The Working Capital Account is from the new sales. He stated that the resale of homes is ahead of the new closings.

Continuing his report, Mr. Lippert stated:The Architecture Committee is touring the neighborhood, and we have written several

violation letters mostly for weeds, dead tress and improper parking.Pete Crocenzi of the Woodshop has trained Victor Rojas, the maintenance superintendent,

how to repair the fascias of the buildings. Several have been done to date.Architecture Committee is writing violation letters most of which are for weeds and other

landscaping items. Most of the residents respond immediately when they receive such a letter. An amplifier in the auditorium burned out and is being replaced.High tree trimming and cutting trees back is continuing in the common areas. There was a huge beehive in the auditorium, and after the extermination of the bees, a

roofer had to be called to remove the hive. Tiles had to be removed and a large hole cut in the roof to extricate the hive, which half filled a 50-gallon drum with honey.

There were several covers of the light fixtures in the Fitness Center broken. No replace-ments could be found until the Construction Office asked the electricians working in the new facility to help. They have now been replaced.

Karen Bulkley has been hired as the new Administrative Assistant. She has already started work.

The new phone system has been installed in the office. The re-circulating hot water heater has been installed on the men’s side shower in the

pool. If this proves successful, one will be installed on the women’s side.Rossmar & Graham has announced that SurePay will now be available for all homeown-

ers. None of the personal data is maintained at Rossmar. Those in the condominiums may find this especially helpful with their monthly payments.

Mr. Decker reported that there is a lot going on not only next to the Sales Office but in the San Tan area as well. The facility will definitely be opened by August, and the Summer Survivors Party is being planned for that location. Guadalupe is paved and should be opened for traffic soon. We should have power very soon so that we can fill the pool.

There are two new models being built by the Sales Office, as well as two more west of the San Tan Facility. All should be complete by the first of the year. Farnsworth sells the models and then leases them back. We have had 76 sales for the year and we are well on our way to 100 homes. Only 17 lots left in the north of Guadalupe area, only three of which are on the golf course.

Mr. Decker further reported:That no one was injured in the recent fire at a Farnsworth Warehouse. No recent rumblings on any construction at Signal Butte and Guadalupe. The Memory Center is schedule to be finished in October, and will be ready for occupancy

the first of the year. The other health care center will not be started for a couple more years. Phase Two of the Town Homes will continue. New models will be built. A survey of the

current owners will be emailed for their suggestions what they would change if they could. There being no further business to come before the Homeowners, the meeting adjourned

at 10:04 AM.Respectfully submitted,Jane E. HarrelRecording Secretary
