Like Advent, which comes before Christmas, Lent is our season of preparation for Easter. While we celebrate Easter every Sunday, all year long, these seasonal changes are important for our faith journey. During Lent we are called to ponder the great sacrifice God made when His only Son had to bear the sins of the world in order to set us free from those sins. Our music during Lent transforms in remarkable ways. The texts become more focused on that sacrifice. The tone of the music becomes more somber, in order to help us all feel the weight of such a burden. The volume of the music often swells in dramatic fashion during Lent, symbolic of the rapidly changing emotions as we contemplate our own faults, yet realize that God has cleansed us of those faults through the sacrifice of Christ. I would like to remind you about the Lenten Cantata on Palm Sunday evening. This year the Lenten Cantata, “Shadows of Sacrifice” by John Purifoy, will be the featured work, accompanied by members of the Albany Symphony. This powerful musical journey into the passion and death of our Savior will be a profound spiritual experience for all who hear it. Please plan to be in the Sanctuary on Sunday evening, March 20, at 7 p.m. Peace, Marc February is Missions Month The Sunday School offerings for February will go to Youth Missions. But to collect the money we need to go to the Sunday school classes to talk about the mission trip and what we use Youth Missions for. I need students to meet me in my office at 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 21 & 28 to go and talk to the Sunday school classes. Flag Football Sunday, February 21 We will be playing flag football at the home of Rob Pilcher on Sunday, February 21, from 2-3:30 p.m. The address is 120 White Columns Drive. We will give everyone a ride to the church when we are finished. Prayer Breakfast is Back! Prayer Breakfast is back (on Fridays). Bring $2 for your breakfast. We will have a devotion and then send you off to school. (Right now we do not provide rides to school.) Parents are welcome to join us. NEW LENTEN BIBLE STUDY with Rev. Jennifer Sherling

Embark on a six-week Lenten journey, exploring John’s gospel with Adam Hamilton! Read a 176-page book and your Bible for homework, and watch a DVD with discussion in class. This study

starts Wednesday, February 17, at 9:30 a.m. and Sunday, February 21, in the Parlor. Books must be ordered through the church office, so call Jane Bragg ASAP at 436-6336, ext.112, and give her your name; designating if you want regular or large print or an e-book. If you are currently in “Friends of Jesus” it is not necessary to call...just tell Jennifer. COME JOIN US!

CREATED FOR THISMany of us allow our career to define who we are and what we were created to do. What if that’s not the case? What if our career is simply what we are paid for and our calling is what we are created for? God has called each of us to a life of servanthood.

“For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45

Join us February 28 as we kick off a new series “Created for This” and look deeper into what

scripture says about living the life of a servant.
