How do you measure the success of a project?

How do you define its intrinsic quality?

The answer is often subjective: it depends on whether you would like to highlight

one certain aspect or another: its beauty, how useful it is, whether it fell within the

budget, or even how it was organised. But perhaps the real value of a project

materialises in how “just” is its expression, its outcome. In whether it fulfils all its

expectations and ambitions; in whether it is, quite simply, just right? Just in time,

just within the budget, just what was wanted. The use of the word “just”, as in,

“hitting the spot”: something close to perfection.

Managing a project is a bit like going on holiday. You assess all your dossiers and

matters pending, organise them, and prepare for your departure. You settle the

usual administrative formalities, much like settling up your electricity bill, before

acquainting yourself with your selected itinerary, as if following a road map. And

then finally, at the end of the journey, you arrive. Because even in civilian life, we

retain our love for the “just”, we have chosen to present to you not only our pro-

jects, but also a hotel lost in the mountains, in a region where the cult of the just,

in the field of architecture and design, is a dogma. So here you have it, what we

did last summer.

CHRISTIAN LENZ

Christian lenz is an austrian architecte living and working in the Vorarlberg

region. His long collaboration with Hermann Kaufmann brought him to

participate to the development of the Vorarlberg’s architecture.

During his years of apprenticeship he got concentrated on design

as well as in architecture. The ease of transition from overall concept to the

details of scale, the rational use of design elements and the careful creation

of details without letting it become an affection, make his building structures

of subtle simplicity. That seduced us while visiting and discovering the Steffisalp

Sporthotel. Being in a place marrying traditional and contemporary design,

in the middle of the austrian hills.
