Foreword

The very first occurrence of fear was when Adam and Eve heard God walking in the Garden of Eden. After they had eaten the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, fear became a reality to them.

“But the lord God called to the man, ‘Where are you?’ He answered, ‘I heard You in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid’” (Gen. 3:9–10, niv). Adam and Eve were suddenly afraid of a loving God who had provided for their every need. Had God changed? No, but Satan sold Adam and Eve a lie, and man has been fearful ever since.

Fear is not of God. 1 John 4:18 (niv) says, “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment.” Fear can be driven out. As believers, we do not have to put up with fear.

Fear also has a couple of first cousins that cause a lot of trouble them-selves: they are anxiety and worry. Fear often starts harmlessly enough as just being an anxious thought. Then that anxiety turns to worry as we dwell on it, and before we know it, we have the full-blown manifestation of fear. We will cover all three contaminants in this book.

It’s been said that there are 365 fear nots in the Bible—one for each day of the year. Truth be known, there are about half that many. We are still dealing with a major problem here nonetheless. Why would God devote so much of His word to such an issue? Because He knew there was a spirit of fear loose in the world just waiting to devour His children. “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and a sound mind” (2 Tim. 1:7).

I hope as you read through this, you will realize we can overcome fear. It is a formidable foe and one we should not take lightly, but God tells us in 1 John 4:4 (niv), “Because the One who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.”

In the movie Network, there is a famous line that goes, “I’m mad as hell, and I’m not going to take it anymore!” I would like to turn that line around just a little and say, “I’m mad at hell, and I’m not going to take it anymore!”

President Franklin D. Roosevelt said in his first inaugural address: “The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself.” What has fear stolen from you or your loved one? Has it stolen your health? Do you have fear of failure? Fear of death? Go online sometime and do a search on the word phobia and see what comes up. You will find a phobia (fear of ) for nearly anything imaginable, and they all trace back to that fateful day in the Garden of Eden.

— Fear Not! —

The good news is that we can overcome him (Satan) “by the blood of the Lamb and the word of [our] testimony” (Rev. 12:11). Jesus has already won the battle; we just have to get our words (testimony) to line up with His word.

The majority of the words in the following devotions are God’s, not mine. My words carry no weight, but His do. When you do your daily devotional, do not just read it silently, but read it out loud. “So faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God” (Rom. 10:17). God’s word is like medicine to the soul and spirit: apply it liberally daily until you walk in complete freedom of fear.

My desire is to see God’s kids—every man, woman, and child—set free from the bondage of fear. It is then, and only then, when we can walk in our destiny to do the thing He created us to do.

Daniel’s Prayer

“Then he said to me, ‘Do not fear, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart to understand, and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard; and I have come because of your words’” (Dan. 10:12).

Daniel prayed to God, and immediately God dispatched an angel to respond to his plea. Now if you read on, you will find that it took the angel twenty-one days to reach Daniel. Why, you ask? Because there was a tre-mendous spiritual battle going on in the unseen world.

In this particular battle, the angel sent to help Daniel needed some additional assistance, that of Michael the Archangel. One thing you can count on when Michael gets called upon, it’s a pretty heated battle! In this particular exchange, the angel says he was fighting against the Prince of Persia, which is a reference to a demonic spirit or spirits.

You need to note a couple of important things about this encounter. First, God did not delay in sending a response to Daniel’s prayer. He sent an angel the same day Daniel first prayed for help. Yet it still took three weeks to get the answer. Remember, God is seldom early, but He is never late. God’s timing is perfect.

Also keep in mind that God sent the necessary reinforcements to free the angel to get the message through to Daniel. Satan and his demons are formidable foes, but they are nothing in comparison to God’s team. God will supply whatever means are necessary to accomplish His purpose.

What battle are you facing today? Does it seem impossible to over-come? You cannot discount the impact of prayer. Trust that God will accomplish His purposes. James 5:16 (niv) says, “The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.” If you haven’t already, turn your battle over to the Lord in prayer. Let Him do the fighting for you. Nothing, I repeat, nothing, is too big for the Lord! [Insert your name here], fear not, “for nothing is impossible with God” (Luke 1:37).

Prayer: Lord, I thank You that You are an active, living God. Today, I humble myself

before You and set my heart to understand You better. Help me to turn my battles over to

You. I believe You will do for me what You did for Daniel because You are “no respecter of

persons” (Acts 10:34, kjv). In Jesus name, amen.
