Some Thoughts to Consider• Don’t reject a major because “it’s
nothing but …”– Do you really understand the major?
– Do you know how many options it opens for you?
– For example, a computer science major need not be programming. It can lead to careers in training, technical documentation, and consulting.
• Do you understand what the major is?– Some majors include multiple specializations
• For example, Health Sciences includes pre-med, pre-vet, pre-dental
– Check out the major information page for a complete explanation
• Just because you never heard of it, doesn’t mean that it won’t be good for you to consider– For example, metallurgy and materials
science is very similar to chemistry and chemical engineering and nursing requires many of the same courses that pre-med does.
– Review the major information page for complete information.
• Have you made up your mind already and the suggestions you received didn’t include the major you selected?– If you are strongly interested in a different
major, you may well be able to succeed in this major
– MyMajors makes the best effort it can to find a major appropriate for your background and interests
– Be sure that you are not over-estimating your likelihood of success completing the major you have in mind
• Are you thinking about an undergraduate major?– Many students have a career in mind that is not
an undergraduate major.– For example, becoming a physician, a lawyer, a
pharmacist, or a counselor requires a graduate degree.
– Get more information about each career you are thinking about to see whether a particular undergraduate major is required or recommended.
– You can go on for a graduate program from many undergraduate programs.
• Don’t be misled by the media– Professions that you are interested in
today, but that are not attractive, may well be in great demand by the time you finish college.
– Most professions are misrepresented in the media.
• There are not many people who are profilers. None are symbologists, and most lawyers and criminal justice personnel have more hard work to accomplish than is obvious from television.
• You may need to narrow down the choices if you have too many majors in mind.– Many majors have tight sequences of
required courses and pre-requisites, so a delay may cause you to spend an extra semester or year in college.
– There are significant financial costs for unnecessary delays (i.e., additional tuition, books, living, lost wages).
