Making a Presentation
• A good introduction will capture your audience’s interest.
• A good conclusion will sum up the main points of your presentation and ensure the your audience has understood.
Constructing a PowerPoint
• Use a minimum font size of 24 to ensure everyone can read it.
• Do not use too many animations as they can be distracting.
• The content of the slide should reinforce the main points you are making in your talk.
Do not read from your notes.
• If you have notes, use only bullet points.
• Do not write out word for word what you will be saying; you will end up reading off your notes.
• Keep your head and chin up; you will appear confident.
Eye Contact
• By looking at your audience, you show confidence.
• Try looking just above the heads of your audience so that it appears that you are looking at your audience.
Speak clearly!
• Speak loudly so that the people at the back of the room can hear you. Imagine you are speaking to a person you know at the back of the room.
• Slow down, do not rush your presentation.
Language
• Use formal English when addressing your audience.
For example: Good afternoon, we are here
to discuss…….
Instead of:Hiya I’m gonna tell ya
about….
Helpful Tools• Use flash cards to help
you remember points, stay focused and allow you to present in a clear and organised order.
• Any visual aids must be clear to the audience, so remember they cannot be too small.
Practice
• Have several practices of your presentation.
• This will leave you feeling confident and less nervous about standing in front of people.
• Remember: PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT.
Things to avoid
• Fidgeting.
• Reading off your paper.
• Giggling
• Hiding behind your paper.
• Don’t hold big pieces of paper, as shaking becomes obvious.
Confidence Boosters
• The audience are on your side.
• Know your topic thoroughly.
• Make sure you have eaten something.
• Get a good night’s sleep the night before.
• Smile, breathe and relax.
Listening to a Presentation
• Pay attention, do not distract the reader.
• Nod in agreement.
• Sit comfortably.
• Smile appropriately.
• Do not giggle, talk or make inappropriate comments to the presenter.
• Wait until the end to ask questions.
• Be prepared to peer assess.
• Be prepared to ask questions about what you have heard.
• Be prepared to answer questions about what you have heard.
