Honesty - the quality of being honesthonestness

incorruption, incorruptness - characterized by integrity or probity

incorruptibility - the incapability of being corrupted

candidness, candour, forthrightness, frankness, directness, candor - the quality of being honest and straightforward in attitude and speech

good faith, straightness - having honest intentions; "he acted in good faith"

truthfulness - the quality of being truthful

Question: "What does the Bible say about honesty?"

Answer:Honesty is truthfulness.

An honest person has the habit of making accurate, trustworthy statements about life, self, others and God. An honest person represents himself just as he is and tells others the truth about themselves.

Honesty is not “expressing everything that goes through your mind.” That’s transparency, and a person can be honest without being transparent. However, no one can be consistently honest without a commitment to the truth.

Honesty will, at times, hurt someone’s feelings, but that does not mean that dishonesty is preferable.

Dishonesty is reproved in Scripture.God does not accept a person who “practices deceit” Psa 101:7 He that worketh deceit shall not dwell within my house: he that telleth lies shall not tarry in my sight.

And Jeremiah speaks of a wicked society;

Jer 9:5 And they will deceive every one his neighbour, and will not speak the truth: they have taught their tongue to speak lies, and weary themselves to commit iniquity.

To purposely misrepresent God is a serious offense.

A liar is defined, first and foremost, as someone who denies that Jesus is the Christ.

1Jn 2:22 Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.

“Trusting in lies” is consistent with forgetting God

Jer 13:25 This is thy lot, the portion of thy measures from me, saith the LORD; because thou hast forgotten me, and trusted in falsehood.

And those who claim to know God but contradict Him, add to His words, or refuse to follow or accept His commands are also called liars.

1Jn 2:4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

1Jn 5:10 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.

Pro 30:6 Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.

Honesty as a character quality is a sign of the Spirit’s work in a person’s heart. God cannot lie, therefore, His presence in a person gives rise to truthfulness. God’s people are honest.

Heb 6:18 That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:

Humankind is not naturally honest Psa 116:11 I said in my haste, All men are liars.

Dishonesty leads to more and more wickedness Pro 17:4 A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips; and a liar giveth ear to a naughty tongue.

The graves inhabitants will include “all liars” Rev 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

“What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?”

Mark 8:36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

Speaking dishonest words in order avoid conflict is flattery

Psa 12:2 They speak vanity every one with his neighbour: with flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak.

An honest person is motivated by love, not by an obsession

Pro 19:22 The desire of a man is his kindness: and a poor man is better than a liar.

The honest person is concerned with telling the truth about God and fostering the spiritual growth of other people

Eph 4:29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

Those who follow Jesus will speak the truth in love;

Eph 4:15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Truth and lies are extremely important to the follower of the Bible. Solomon speaks of the things that God hates !

Pro 6:17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,

The Apostle James gives us some advice about our speaking, when he discusses the tongue;

Jas 3:4 Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.

Jas 3:5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!

He goes on further!

Jas 3:8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

Pro 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

Remember that what we say will be bought up at the Judgement for us to give an answer to Jesus.

Jas 3:9 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.

Jas 3:10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

Jas 3:11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?

We are not constant enough with our speech.

Mat 12:36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

Mat 12:37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

The Bible also agrees that honesty is the only way to go.

Philip 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

The Bible is full of examples and advice in this area;

Eph 4:25 Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.

If we are known as truthful people, then our word is always trusted;

Pro 3:3 Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart:

Solomon put it all into perspective in Eccles 12:13
