Robservations

It is hard to fathom the things that many of our wartime heroes have been through and witnessed. But it is easy to realize how important these men and women have been to our country and our way of life. My father was in World War II, storming the beaches of Normandy. He lost many friends during that time. He also made some very close, lifelong ones. Most of us are very lucky and will never have to deal with any type of war and fight-ing. We live everyday benefitting from the efforts of our serviceman with the freedom of many choices. November is National Veterans’ Month and this Friday, November 11 is Remembrance Day. For many it is a just another day off to look forward to. But for millions more, it is a day to step back and reflect on our free-doms and to thank those who have helped us to achieve it. Thanks to those who do step forward and are part of our military and peace-keeping missions. And thanks to all those who have done it in the past. You are remem-bered. Lest we forget.

Passing Notes

An elderly man and his wife were sitting in church on Sunday. She tapped his shoul-der and passed him a note. It said, “Be ready. I just let out a silent fart.” He quickly jotted down a return note, “You need to replace the batteries on your hear-ing aids.”

Great Job Opportunity

You need to have great people and com-munication skills and to love helping peo-ple. Get more information by emailing [email protected]. Thanks for reading Robservations. I hope you have a fantastic week.

Watson’s Waddle

Eat, play, love. That is what it is all about for me and most dogs. I guess I could add drink water, exercise and sleep to that short list but it doesn’t sound quite as catchy. I am lucky that I am very well-fed. Rob gives me a healthy dog food and always has some available in my dish. I also get a lot of treats as we travel through the valley. I love to play, especially with Matilda. We will run and wrestle continuously while we are out for a walk. With our short, stubby legs we look like a couple of T. Rexes try-ing to wrestle. It is quite funny really but we definitely do get lots of exercise while we are doing it. Love? Well that is an obvious one. Every-one and everything wants and deserves love. It feels so good to have someone show they care for you. I get lots of scritches and rubs, hugs, soothing voices, eye contact and more. I can never get too much love. No one can. Sleep is a huge part of my existence. Rob has a tough time understanding how I am happy to just lie around most of the day. Personally, I have no problem getting up from one dog bed, strolling around for a minute and then going to sleep on another bed. A dog’s life can be a great life.

What Year Was It?

Michael Jackson passed away, paleontolo-gists uncovered the oldest remains of a human ancestor yet (Ardipithecus ramidus) and NASA launched a photoprobe to The Milky Way to search for extrasolar planets. What Year Was It? See page 10.

My doctor suggested that I get more fresh air and I would feel better. So now I roll down the window in my car everywhere I go.

Cheers to the Arts

The Station Neighbourhood Pub is inviting you to purchase a pint of beer to contribute to the new Columbia Valley Multi-Use Cen-tre (community hall). For every pint purchased before January 15, The Station will donate $1 towards new audio-visual equipment for the centre. They will also donate $3 from every jug sold during that time. At the end of the donation period, owners Jason and Justin will match every dollar donated. The goal is $25,000. Currently they are at $1,604, well on the way. Do your part and order a pint (or two) at The Station Neighbourhood Pub. Thanks to the owners for this great initiative.

Wrong Sport

A horse tries out for a baseball team. On his first at bat he hits the ball into deep right field but just stands in the batter’s box. “Run,” yells the manager. “Run? If I could run I would be in the Ken-tucky Derby.”

Hot and Smooth Shave

What would be a great, unique gift for your husband, boyfriend, father, brother or grandfather? A hot shave from Patrick at Invermere Barbers is a fantastic option. I went for a hot shave last week and it was very nice to feel pampered for a change. It involves warm towels, creams and lotions, a straight-blade razor and a little bit of trust. Rest assured that Patrick is well-trained and has lots of experience with hot shaves. Stop in to Invermere Barbers anytime for a pleasant experience during a great haircut from Mike or Patrick.

Rockies Hockey

The Rockies defeated Golden last Tues-day before coming up short against both Fernie and Castlegar last weekend. We are currently 8 points back of Fernie and 5 ahead of Golden for fourth place in the division. Kimberley and Creston are very strong in our division this year, tied with 28 points. Creston is hosting the Cyclone Taylor Cup this year, meaning they get a bye into the event so they have put together a strong squad. Kimberley has been solid for the last couple of years. The Rockies are on the road this weekend. The will be hosting Fernie and Nelson next Friday and Saturday, November 18 and 19. The Creston Thunder Cats will be here on Tuesday, November 22.

Store Clerk

I am very honest with my customers when they are trying on clothing. One day a man came out of the dressing room looking awful. “Those pants look terrible on you,” I said. “Try another pair.” “These are my pants,” he replied. “I am trying on the shirt.”

The Thrifty Reporter

November 11. Remembrance Day is a day to buy a poppy and proudly wear it. It is a day to take a few minutes of your time to remember....to remember the freedom we enjoy in this country and how it was achieved. On Remembrance Day, members of the armed forces (soldiers, sailors and airmen) are commemorated. It marks the date and time when armies stopped fighting World War I. on November 11th at 11 am in 1918 (the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month). Canada lost some 100,000 Canadian soldiers during the First and Second World Wars alone. To give the volunteers time to participate in the ceremonies, the Invermere Thrift Store will be not open until 1 pm on Friday, No-vember 11.

Tender And Tasty

Thanks to the Millers and Home Hardware for lunch last Saturday. The free beef on a bun was incredibly tasty and tender. Very well done (well medium actually). But yes, they fed a lot of people and everyone was quite happy with the food.

The Hoodoo Grill and Lounge has begun booking Christmas parties for this season. They will customize your party to suit any size group that will suit your budget. They will provide a great atmosphere, fan-tastic food and more. Dates are already filling up so give them a call soon at 250-345-2166.

Riddliculous Answer

(From page 2) M31 is the next combination representing May having 31 days after January, February, March and April having 31, 28, 31 and 30 respectively.

Good Bowler

The police have been staking out the bowl-ing alley, watching for a man who breaks in and bowls a couple games each night. They are really determined to get him be-fore he strikes again.

Live Music Mondays

This Monday, November 14 brings ‘Woodley’ to the Horsethief Creek Pub in Radium beginning at 7 pm. It is the debut release tour for her full-length album ‘Losing My Virginity’. Her set list will include a collection of original songs combined with her unique version of various covers. It will be a great night. The following Monday brings Gorden James.

Testy Trivia

Wednesday Night Trivia at The Station is a tough test of trivial knowledge. For only $2/person (1 to 6 persons/team) you can find out how much you know about random, nearly meaningless (trivial) information. The same team has gone undefeated for 5 weeks now so it is time for you to step up to the plate. Grab some of your wiser friends and get down there for 7 pm. Actu-ally, 6:30 pm is smarter as the place has been filling fast on Wednesdays. Have some fun out there.

Hamburger Dinner

This week’s Friday night dinner (November 11at 6:30 pm) at the Invermere Legion is a great deal. A hamburger with all the fixings with Caesar salad, wedge potatoes and dessert for only $10. Sounds good to me. While there, purchase tickets for the 50/50 and meat draws. There will be several winners on both Friday and Saturday eve-nings.

Saturday UFC

This Saturday, November 12 brings an exciting UFC mach-up between Eddie Al-varez and Conor McGregor. Both these guys are very tough and aggressive. The main card of matches begins at 8 pm. UFC will be followed by a great mix of mu-sic thanks to DJ XXII.

It Was That Year

(From page 4) In 2009, the longest total solar eclipse of the twentieth century oc-curred, the second G-2 Summit took place and a Russian and an American satellite collided in space.

Edgewater Shuttle

The Horsethief Creek Pub in Radium is welcoming the residents of Edgewater with a free shuttle service every Saturday eve-ning until December 17. Pick-ups begin at 6 pm at PIP’s Store and continue hourly through the evening. Re-turn trips include drop-offs right at your door. This is a great service allowing folks to celebrate without worrying about getting behind the wheel of a vehicle. Please call 250-347-6400 to confirm your shuttle trip.

Cheesy

There was a huge explosion at a cheese factory in France. No one was hurt but the building was destroyed. All they could find was de Brie.

Christmas Caterers

What is your plan for your company Christ-mas party this year? How about a gather-ing for friends or family? One of the more important aspects is the food. Good food really brings good times. Anne and Brandi Riches are taking book-ings now for the holiday season. Don’t wait until the last moment. Call them now at 250-342-1679.

Light Up Invermere

Celebrate a traditional mountain Christmas during Invermere’s Light Up on Saturday, November 19. It has become an annual event in our community. The official ‘Light Up’ and candlelight car-ols will happen at Cenotaph Park following the parade. Enjoy the season.

American Election

As this issue goes to print, the Americans are going to the polls. I have to admit that it has been a crazy campaign. It is total negativity. For a country to spend billions of the tax-payers money to force them to choose between two completely corrupt, out of touch candidates, while thinking that they are the pinnacle of freedom, is totally nuts. I really don’t even understand their system but I don’t see anything good coming out of it. I anticipate a lot of U.S. migrants coming to Canada.

Where I Was

The photo on page 6 shows a piece of glasswork from Bavins. It is a Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Award. You can see one at Palliser Printing or at AG Valley Foods.

Winter Wonderland Market

There is a magical market coming up next weekend at the Invermere Community Hall. The Winter Wonderland Market will run Friday and Saturday, November 18 and 19. Plan a visit to the market to check out all the wonderful vendors and the items that they have for you.

Super Hero Curlers

The Ladies’ Super Hero Curling Bonspiel took place this past weekend at the Inver-mere District Curling Centre. Twenty teams displayed their super powers as they tried for the championship. Congratulations to the Vejprava team, the overall champions, winning the A Event. The Patton and MacCormack teams took the B and C Events respectively. It was a fantastic weekend with our local ladies hosting several visiting teams. There were lots of great costumes and plenty of fun times. That is what a curling bonspiel is all about.

Series Champions

Congratulations to the Chicago Cubs for their World Series victory. Game seven against Cleveland was very exciting. The Cubs had not won in 108 years. That should give some hope to the Toronto Ma-ple Leaf fans.

Very Wise

I was telling my teenager that as you get older you develop wisdom. “You must be a genius,” he said.

Shooting Stars

Most meteor showers are caused by the Earth’s orbit crossing paths with a debris trail from a comet or other space object. Although they look like ‘shooting stars’ high in the sky, the particles are actually burning up in our atmosphere only 60 to 100 miles from the ground. The Earth is moving so fast that the energy generated by a piece of debris hitting our atmosphere is incredible. Many of the ones we see are actually as tiny as a piece of dust that we would barely see with our naked eyes here on Earth. Space and the Universe are pretty cool.

Headed South

I have seen a lot of Canada Geese around the valley the last couple of weeks. Doro-thy Lake has been loaded with them. They are all stopping in for a brief rest as they head south for the winter. It is a very long journey. At the same time, many locals are follow-ing their lead. This is the time of year that the ‘snowbirds’ begin their journeys. Travel safely and have lots of fun.
