What is the consumer protection act?

For many products, society has laws and standards that the designer must meet. These help to protect the users, by specifying that products meet certain requirements and have suitable levels of safety. The Laws also allow consumers to get their money back if goods are found to be faulty or if products do not perform in the way claimed by the manufacturer. This act is given to the manufacturer to ensure products meet the certain requirements and have a suitable level of safety. If goods are faulty or not the same as they were advertised the law allows consumers to get their money back.

When did the act come into place?

Part I of the act (product liability directive) came into force on 1st may 1988Part II of the act containing consumer safety provisions, came into force on 1 October 1987. These provisions apply throughout the UK.
