POSTINGS: Conference at St. John the Divine; Architecture And Ethics

By RACHELLE GARBARINE

What is ethical architecture? Can ethics and architecture co-exist? What role does the architect play in

the ethics of building?

These and other questions will be discussed on Saturday at a conference of architects, educators,

theologians and clergy at St. James Chapel of the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, Amsterdam

Avenue at 112th Street. The public is invited; there is a $20 donation at the door.

Panelists include George Ranalli, dean of the City College School of Architecture and Environmental

Studies, and Prof. Gregory Palermo, associate chairman for undergraduate studies in the department

of architecture at Iowa State University and co-author of ''Ethics and the Practice of Architecture''

(John Wiley, 2000).

Among the topics to be discussed will be the ethical responsibility of architects as they assume not onl

the role of designers and builders but also the roles of developers, construction managers and code

enforcers. Also, what is the responsibility to the community at large, not just the human community

 but the natural environment?

Registration is at 1 p.m. The discussion, scheduled from 1:30 to 3:30, will include a half hour for

questions from the audience. A tour of the crypt and the great choir is to begin at 3:30.
