Highlights of the Event

Tour of the Altars - Over fifty local businesses, restaurants, museums and shops will create Día de los Muertos altars that make up the Tour of the Altars. 25,000 printed tour maps will guide visitors to the many altars and accompanying activities around Old Town.

Candlelight Procession - On Sunday, November 2 at 6pm. From Old Town State Historic Park Plaza winding its way through Old Town to El Campo Santo Cemetery.

Two full days of activities and entertainment in the only community-wide event in Old Town.

The Grand Public Altar in El Campo Santo Cemetery with festive and traditional decoration, offering visitors the opportunity to add their own photos or tributes of their loved ones.

Fun Workshop Activities - Families can enjoy creating their own Día de los Muertos mementos to take with them at one of the many free or (marginal) fee workshops. Kids can decorate their own colorful sugar skulls, hats and masks, as well as learn how to make papel picado and other traditional crafts.

Live Entertainment - Folk, mariachis, and other live performances will be staged around Old Town in several locations during the entire event.

Restaurant Festivities - Participating restaurants will be displaying their own altars and will be featuring special Día de los Muertos menus, drinks and decorations.

By creating an altar at your place of business or at a prominent place in Old Town, you are making your business an integral part of the event. Altar sponsors typically experience a significant increase in business on the weekend of the event and well beyond. 75,000+ event visitors will be invited to come by your altar as they proceed through the Tour of the Altars. Use your creativity or engage your staff in assembling a traditional Día de los Muertos altar. Your altar could honor family, friends, or even a historical person relating to the event or San Diego in general. Don’t miss out on the 75,000+ event visitors coming to Old Town, give them a reason to come by your business!

Save Our Heritage Organisation will host the 5th Annual Old Town San Diego’s Día de los Muertos celebration on November 1 and 2, when it is traditionally celebrated in Mexico. Día de los Muertos is considered to be the most important holiday of the year by many in Mexico and other Latin American countries. The unity between life and death is celebrated when families come together and offer hospitality to the spirits of their loved ones. This event is designed to celebrate the history, culture and heritage of the San Diego region and to pay homage to this very important and festive tradition. Old Town’s diverse and historic legacy makes it the best site in San Diego to hold this celebration. Old Town itself takes the place of the mercado, a traditional marketplace, providing goods, entertainment, and regional foods. There will be entertainment and activities for participants of all ages to enjoy.
