Risk reduction
• We know risk factors from population studies• Non-modifiable: ageing; genetic factors• Modifiable: low education, smoking, mid-life
obesity, mid-life hypertension, physical inactivity• Healthy lifestyle is not a guarantee, but may reduce
risk of dementia and many other diseases• Healthy brain and healthy body• Lots of overlap with other NCDs, especially
diabetes and cardiovascular diseases
NCD Summit New York
• Second High Level Meeting of the UN on a health topic, focusing on diabetes, cancer, heart and lung diseases
• Alzheimer’s disease recognised as key issue in para 18
• Main achievement, but we have to further advocate for changes in WHO policy
• ADI Partner in NCD Alliance• 2012 year of targets and indicators
How do they overlap
• Ageing and NCDs: 70% of people dying from NCDs are over age of 60
• NCDs and dementia: risk factors
• Dementia and ageing: 90% or more over age of 60
• Dementia and Mental Health: lack of diagnosis; treatment gap
