•What is a Dual Enrollment class? A class in which a high school & and a college credit can be earned in 1 class; it is offered though Chatt. State

•Who can take a DE class? Typically only 11th & 12th graders

•Where are classes held? At CCA via Hybrid/Echo - class held at CCA during a regular class period; Chatt. State’s online curriculum is used and a CCA teacher is the proctor for academic and technical assistance when needed. Online OR on Chatt. State campus - work on your own at home on weeknights or weekends; recommend this if you are GREAT with time management and intrinsic motivation; however, this in addition to CCA’s workload)

•When are they? fall, spring or summer semesters (The grants are only available 2 of the 3 semesters and CCA recommends grants be used in fall and spring)

•How does it transfer to colleges as a credit? It depends on the college (see their website); many will count as an even exchange for a class or will count, at least, as an elective.

If students don’t have high enough scores to meet the criteria, students will can take Chatt. State’s free Compass Test at their Testing Center. It is another version of the ACT but you only take the subject you need.

If a student has not yet taken the PLAN or ACT, they will need to take the Residual ACT test (for approximately $40) at the Testing Center at Chatt. State. This is another version of the ACT and includes all 4 ACT subjects.

DE Criteria

Is DE right for you?

Considerations for taking a DE classes and in which format: ◦ How much time do you have outside of school? How busy is that school

year, academically? Do you have a job? What format would work best for your learning (lecture style, online, etc.)? Is time management your strong-suit? What is your major and do you have a lot of rehearsals?

**Time is usually more of an issue than ability when taking a DE class**

11th graders usually take PreCalculus I & II

12th graders usually take Comp. I and II and/or a math class (PreCal or Calculus)

Students can take any class at Chatt. State that is not a technical class (usually labeled “TTC” in the title)

Only occasionally is it recommended that another class be taken online or on Chatt. State’s campus at night/on the weekends.

STUDENTS:

*The application process is primarily the students’ responsibility.

*It is a GREAT learning process for students to practice

applying to college, resumes, etc.

*Parents & I help guide them and double check what they have done,

remind them about deadlines but they complete all/most of the tasks

and make phone calls when problems arise.

*Students fill out paperwork, get parent signatures, turn in everything

orderly and neatly, turn packets in on time to Mrs. Bacher, complete the

Online DE Grant (takes 15 mins. & directions are provided in packets) PARENTS:

*Be aware of what and when things need to happen to help remind students

*Assist and double check student’s completed paperwork

*Monitor deadlines (grant money can be lost if all paperwork is not PROCESSED by Chatt.

State by June 15, hence the early deadline of March 27)

*Pay the bill on time to avoid late fees (via Tiger Web account, available 24/7) MRS. BACHER:

*Assist with overall completion of packets and reminders of deadlines

*Add transcripts and PLAN/ACT scores to the packets

The application process – Who is responsible for what?

Have to register and pay for 1 class each semester Comp I in the fall semester (Aug- Dec) = 0.5 High school credit Comp II in the spring semester (Jan – May) = 0.5 High school credit Students need 1 full credit to graduate

Semester 1 (Comp 1) is a 3 hour class = roughly $500

Semester 2 (Comp 2) is a 3 hour class = roughly $500

Student must pass each semester (Dec. and May) with a “B” to get the Online DE Grant for the next semester

IF you do not pass in the fall semester:

1 - You will have to pay full price for the course in January

OR

2 – You will have to enroll into CCA’s regular level class

This will cause a significant schedule change in the student’s class schedule in the spring semester and most likely would result in dropping 1 or more arts class(-es) to

accommodate this change. This is a class built into CCA’s schedule; however, a Chatt. State professor comes to our

campus to teach the class Parents of DE English will pay tuition 2 different times –

In August for the Fall semester

AND

In January for Spring semester

DE English (Seniors ONLY per Chatt. State)

Parents of DE PreCalculus will pay tuition 2 different times – In August for the Fall semester

AND In January for Spring semester

DE PreCalculus (typically Jrs. & Srs.)

Only for high school juniors or seniors (Junior year begins in June following 10th grade)

Must be a TN Resident for 1 year at the time you apply for the grant

Only available 2 of 3 semesters (typically fall and spring)

In March, apply online for the next Fall and Spring terms at the same time. (Deadline to apply– March 27 is the preferred CCA deadline)

Must maintain a Cumulative Chatt. State GPA of 2.75 (B average) or will lose the DE Grant for the next semester. Once the grant is lost, a student cannot earn it back.

You must maintain a “B” in all DE classes to earn the grant for the following semester.

** For students who don’t make a “B” 1st semester, parents will owe approximately $700 for PreCal/$500 for Comp I on the January bill for the spring semester.

Criteria to be eligible for the DE Grant

Grant covers tuition/fees but not books Tuition/fees bill can be divided up over 3 months; however, the 1st payment (Aug. and Jan.) requires 50% of the

Students taking 2 classes:

2016-2017 Senior Year: Class 1 Fall Semester PreCal 1 (3 hr. class) = $300 grant (family pays $220 approx. The grant is VERY TIME SENSATIVE. To receive it you will need to ensure all these things occur

by June 15:

1 – Turn in an application packet and have met the ACT/Plan score criteria (or take the Compass test)

to Mrs. Bacher by March 27

2 – Chatt. State has to process the application and send you a letter of acceptance to Chatt. State with

an assigned student ID # (known as an “A” number)  

3 – Apply for Selective Service, if applicable

4 – Apply for the online DE Grant

4 – Must have a “$0.00” balance due to Chatt. State on Tiger Web (for returning students)

DE Grant(funded by the “TSAC” program through the State of TN)

Takes about 15 minutes to complete – students are encouraged to do this

You will need the student Social Security # to apply

You do NOT need to print out anything at the end when it gives you the option

Apply for next Fall semester then when finished, go back and apply for the Spring semester (remember to change the year). This helps ensure you will not forget to do it next October for the Spring semester.

I will pull a report that will allow me to see if all the students have completed it correctly

Completing the Online DE Grant

If students are 18 now or turning 18 during the semester of taking a class, they must register for Selective Service at:

www.sss.gov

Application packet will not be processed until student is registered, (which can prevent student from receiving the DE grant.)

Male Students

Once you have been “accepted” into Chatt. State, you will receive a letter stating such, that means your paperwork has been processed.

You will be assigned an “A” number, which is the Student ID # (SID#)

Then create a Tiger Web account through Chatt State (has your balance due and you can pay the bill through this program). Check it frequently - at least once a week until your grant has been credited and your balance due is “0.00”

They will not mail you a bill or call you if you have a balance.

If there is a problem, they will contact you via this account.

Problems not resolved by the June 15 and Dec. 15 deadlines can prevent students from receiving the grant.

It is your responsibility to check your account.

2- Go to the college websites of the ones most interested in (if known) and look for the Transfer Equivalency Chart (will be posted under the admissions information section on most college websites.)

3 – Call the Admissions office of college

2 ways classes will typically transfer: 1- as an even exchange for a class

(Comp I & II for Freshman English credit) 2- as an elective

Accepting transferred requirements is strictly determined by

each accepting college, not HC Schools system

For credit in Comp I & II, colleges will usually only give 1 credit for passing the AP test OR for taking DE English, but some will…it depends on the college.
