Head – 4-H challenges you to think and make decisions,

both for yourself and as a member of a group.

Heart – It can be tough growing up in today’s society. To

sort out their ideas and emotions, 4-H members often talk

to club leaders and to each other about what matters to

them.

Hands – In 4-H, you learn skills that you can use for the

rest of your life. You won’t just talk about it, you will

actually get your hands on it. . . learn by doing.

Health – Being healthy means feeling good; doing your

best to balance school, friends, and family; and making the

best choices.

What Do the H’s Stand for?

You can go to camp, learn to shop wisely, give a

demonstration, grow vegetables, hatch an egg, chat

on a computer, make bread, shadow an adult at work,

choose to eat healthy foods, give a speech, cure a

ham, or conquer an obstacle course. You can perform

in a skit, make a birdhouse, start a business, shear

sheep, take pictures, learn about electricity, judge soil,

barbeque chicken, or drive a tractor. You can decorate

a room, ride in a bike rodeo, be part of an

international exchange, learn to sew, raise an animal,

or protect the environment and there are lots of more

things!

What Do Kids Do in 4-H?

The 4-H year starts on September 1 and ends on August 31

at the conclusion of the state fair. To be a 4-H Member, you

must complete an enrollment form. All 4th & 5th grade

students will complete an enrollment form during their first

club meeting at school. The middle and high school students

will have the opportunity to participate in their respective

club days at school or with other school enrichment

activities. If you need an enrollment form, you may call the

4-H Office at 606.784.5457 or email [email protected]. Visit

Self-Esteem What is self-

Esteem?

Self-esteem is your

overall opinion of

yourself – how you feel about your abilities and

limitations. When you have healthy self-esteem,

you feel good about yourself and see yourself as

deserving the respect of others. When you have

low self-esteem, you put little value on your

opinion and ideas. You might constantly worry

that you aren’t good enough.

Factors that shape and influence

self-esteem

Self-esteem begins to form in early childhood.

Factors that can influence self-esteem include:

●Your own thoughts and perception

●How other people react to you

●Experiences at home, school, work and in the

community

●Illness, disability or injury

●Culture or religion

●Role and status in society

●Media messages

Relationships with those close to you – parents,

siblings, peers, teachers another important

contacts – are important to your self-esteem.

Many beliefs you hold about yourself today

reflect messages you’ve received from these

people over time.

Congratulations! To all of our State Fair Project Winners

for a job well done!

JOB WELL DONE!

Before toothpaste was invented, people used lemon juice to brush their teeth! Toothpaste was only

invented about 100 years ago!

HEALTH BULLETIN: Have you ever had a cavity? When going to the dentist you do not want to hear

you have a cavity. A cavity is a place on your tooth, like a small hole, where there is tooth decay. Did

you know that if it is not taken care of it can get bigger over time? To take care of your teeth:

●Brush at least two times a day. Before you go to bed is an important time to brush.

●Brush your teeth in a circular motion.

●Don’t forget to floss your teeth.

●See the dentist two times a year for a checkup.

Did you

know?

Can you unscramble these Words?
