Screen doors and window screens are a common feature of construction in most parts of Australia and allow for free circulation of air in hot weather whilst keeping insects from entering the premises; however fly screens offer little security and are easily broken through. Security screen doors or window grilles on the other hand are strong enough to withstand most attempts at forced entry while retaining the advantages of a screen door and a window screen and are extremely popular.

Australian Standard (AS) 5039: Security Screen Doors and Security Window Grilles was developed to provide both the industry and purchasers with specifications covering the general requirements and performance of these products.

WHAT DOES THE STANDARD COVER?

This Standard specifies the minimum requirements for the performance of all types of hinged and sliding security screen doors and hinged, sliding, removable and fixed security window grilles used primarily in residential situations. It is concerned mainly with resistance to forced entry and does not address the important issues relating to egress in the case of emergency. The Standard covers movable and removable security window grilles that can be used in such instances.

The document is intended for use by regulatory authorities and all persons concerned with the manufacture, installation and general requirements of security screen doors or window grilles.

For products to conform to the standard, they must be tested by an accredited laboratory in accordance with Australian Standard (AS) 5041: Methods of test—Security screen doors and window grilles. The tests include:

` Dynamic Impact Test

` Jemmy Test

` Pull Test

` Probe Test

` Shear Test

IDENTIFICATION OF COMPLIANT PRODUCTS

AS 5039 requires that compliant products be labelled. As a minimum, labels should identify:

1. The manufacturer.

2. The standard (AS 5039) to which the product is certified.

3. The independent accreditation scheme under which certification is provided.

Compliance certificates can provide additional validation. They should only be deemed acceptable if the company providing the certificate is a part of an accreditation scheme such as the NSSA independent third party accreditation through the Australian Window Association’s (AWA) NATA accredited Inspection Agency.

Ask for test reports if there is any doubt about the validity of labels or certificates supplied.

Website listings can be a useful source of information to confirm if the company is a member of an industry association that has an accreditation scheme and underpinning audit program.
