FREEDOM SERVICE DOGS - Erin Leeper (left), dis-
cussed the service dog program that they run. They only
use rescued dogs and do not have a breeding program. It
takes seven to nine months to train an assistance dog.
There are basically three types of assistance that dogs can
provide: (1) assistance to the blind (highly trained), (2)
assistance to the hearing impaired, and (3) seizure alert for
victims of autism, stroke, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome,
and injured service men and women.
Erik Rudolph discussed his experience with his service
dog, Mason. Suffering from severe diabetes, doctors had
given him three weeks to live (several months ago). Ma-
son brings him his insulin from the refrigerator. A veteran
who was wounded and having served as a police officer,
Erik also is Bipolar and has Post Traumatic Stress Syn-
drome. Mason can sense when he has either an anxiety or
panic attack and calm him down. Erik related an experi-
ence when he had a low sugar level in his sleep. Mason
sensed that and awakened him, even giving him a bloody
nose in the process. He indicated that it costs between
$20,000 and $25,000 to provide a service dog. Erik plans
on taking Mason on a cruise, which may the first time for
such a trip by a service dog.

TODAY IN HISTORY
On November 18, 1889, the Navy launched the battleship USS Maine at the Brooklyn
Navy Yard. But the ship’s beginning would turn out to be not nearly as famous as its
ending—an explosion that sent it to the bottom of Havana’s harbor in 1898, triggering
the Spanish-American War and giving rise to the slogan, ―Remember the Maine!‖
1829—Captain Nathaniel Palmer becomes the first American to sight Antarctica.
1872—Susan B. Anthony is arrested in Rochester, New York, for trying to vote in the
presidential election earlier in the month.
1883—At the urging of the railroads, the United States is divided into time zones.
1928—Steamboat Willie, the first Mickey Mouse cartoon with sound, premieres.

THE FOUR-WAY TEST
Of the things we think, say or do:
Is it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Will it build GOODWILL and
BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all con-
cerned?

WHAT PAUL HARRIS SAID
It is not the purpose of Rotary to make social, religious, or racial composites of its members. To attempt to do so would be to attempt a disservice rather than a service. To attempt to erase social, religious and racial differences would be an attempt to deprive civilization of one of its most promising methods of progress. Under existing conditions, each social, religious, and racial group constitutes a proving ground on which to test its theories, with the result that civilization is enriched and thought raised to higher levels.

mation to individuals in the district:
“Thanks to all of you, our most recent No-
vember Family Fairs were able to provide
approximately 300 Free Pap Screenings to
women who otherwise might have done
without. All of this because of your efforts
and generosity.”
These Free Pap Screenings were provided

and working with the younger wrestling pro-
gram. Austin enjoys playing any type of sports

to become an NCAA national champion. He
plans to attend Virginia Tech.

A GARY MERAZ TRUE STORY His wife was going into labor, and a man dialed 911 in a
panic. When the dispatcher came on the line, he cried,
―My wife is having a baby. Her contractions are only two
minutes apart. What am I supposed to do?‖
The dispatcher said, ―Calm down, sir. Is this her first
child?‖
―No,‖ the frantic man replied, ―This is her husband!‖
WALK FOR LIFE
Many members of our Rotary Club were very moved by the recent presentation, ―Walk for
Life‖ by Rotarian Colin Macfarlane (a member of eClub One, also in our District). This
project supports clinics in Bangladesh addressing the terrible malady of increased rates of in-
fant clubfoot deformity. They use a technique of casting followed by a locally fabricated ab-
duction brace. If applied as soon as possible after birth, but certainly before the age of two,
the results are stunning. Practically every child treated will be delivered of a life, practically
useless, on hands and knees.
Following Colin’s talk to our Club, President Larry Brutlag familiarized him with the Match-
ing Grant process and further, agreed for the Rotary Club of Parker to be the Primary Inter-
national Partner in a Matching Grant. Colin indicated that the RC Dhaka Buriganga might
well agree to serve as Host Partner. The Glencoe Foundation (Colin’s own foundation)
would be the Cooperating Organization.
He is speaking to 40 clubs in our District 5450 (as of today, he has been to more than 35!),
raising funds for the Grant.
To date he has raised more than $13,000 from Rotarians, mostly in the form of personal
pledges, which will be leveraged by the Matching Grant. As you are aware, maximum DDF
match in our District is $10,000 (requiring 4 Clubs), so this should be our minimum goal
within the district. Our District Grants Chair has indicated that the limit can possibly be ex-
ceeded, depending on the level of pledging. We hope to exceed the $55-60,000 range.
We are profoundly keen to support this effort because for a modest sum ($200) for therapy
and the abductor brace, a youngster who has practically no chance at life at all is afforded a
real life-altering occasion to escape life-long disability. (A $50,000 project will provide sal-
vation for over 250 kids!)
The CLIPBOARD being circulated today affords us the opportunity to become a part of this
multi-district Matching Grant Project. We are planning to include clubs from both Australia
and Canada, and the USA in this Grant to help this worthy cause.
Bob Forbes and Irv Buck.
