What defines a city?

How do you know if you are in one ?


The definition of a city is rather

vague, like a population center of

significant size. The U.S. CensusBureau defines a metropolitan

area as having at least 50,000

residents. But it takes more than

numbers of people to create what

a city is all about.

y Author Jane Jacobs pinned the term ´street balletµ; a natural

choreography that emerges when cities are vibrant and alive.

Although not trained as a sociologist, Jacobs· book The Death

and Lif e of Great American Cities is a seminal work within

urban studies. She was active in her New York City neighborhoodof Greenwich Village when city planners threatened to bulldoze

blocks to make way for a freeway that was supposed to traverse

Manhattan. Jacobs argued that modest blocks, with what might

seem like ramshackle buildings are not urban blight, but that the

many residents, merchants, and shoppers coalesce to actually create

cities. Taking away these everyday moments, like the one we

observe, would not just alter city life but in effect destroy it.

Another reason for people lovingtheir city is that that is where they have always been. Some people are born and brought up in a particular

city only. They have never moved toany other place. For such people the city becomes a part of their identity and way of living.

Also their culture and heritage is synonymous with the city. The original traditions and an improvisedversion according to the city give rise to an amalgamated new version.

y What inspires such love and pulls people to the great cities?

What indeed is a great city? It is almost easier to say what it

is not. Except for its wealthy elites, great cities do not

always provide easy or gracious living«they provide

something more..they provide a sense of belonging..theyprovide an identity, both to the city and to the citizens




The employment opportunities are just one of the lucrative f eatures of acity.

A city for us is a cluster of socialinteraction where unknowns are found daily.

It is not only the facilities but the type of social, economic and mental status

and level that lures citizens to f eel asense of belonging.

It provides a sense of protection tothose who f eel socially detached.

OUR CITY DELHI


y Delhi is multi-cultured and multi-linguistic citywith people from almost every parts of India.Delhi shares its borders with Haryana and UttarPradesh. The influence of these states can befound in the language and lifestyle of Delhi.People of Delhi are called "Delhi-ites". Delhi-

ites are very advanced and open to embracingnew customs and changes but at the same timethey are very conscious of their culture. Peopleof various caste, creed and culture live here withpeace and harmony. This shows the "Unity in

Diversity" among the people of Delhi. Growthof infrastructure, new avenues of business andemployment have beckoned people from allparts of the country to migrate to Delhi in searchof better livelihood.

people here are very open-

hearted, lively and they love

based on its physical beauty, opportunities for

socializing and a community's openness. It also

found a positive correlation between community

attachment and economic growth.



What Makes People Love Where

Their citiesy A new study by the Knight Foundation shows that there are

three primary drivers that create emotional bonds between

people and their community and they are consistent in

virtually every city. Interestingly, the usual suspects ³ jobs,

the economy, and safety ³ are not among the top three

drivers. Rather, people consistently give higher ratings for

elements that relate directly to their daily quality of life: a

community·s openness to all people, opportunities for

socializing, and an area·s physical beauty.




WHEN PEOPLE COME TOGETHER

y All cities of india came together tocelebrate the win of WORLD CUP2011 .

People all over the country hit the streets to

celebrate India'sWorld Cup victory.

y People gathered at clubs, restaurants andpubs to watch the match but once it was

over, they came out onto the streets to

party. Youngsters were seen holding national

flags and singing and dancing away to 'VandeMataram', 'Chak De! India' . The whole city

come together in the celebrations , which

showed the unity and interity.




JANE JACOBS ² THE WRITERy A frequent theme of her work was to ask ´whether

we are building cities for people or for carsµ. She

was arrested twice during demonstrations.

y She also had considerable influence on the

regeneration of the St. Lawrence neighborhood, a

housing project regarded as a major success.y She was selected to be an officer of the Order of

Canada in 1996 for her seminal writings and

thought-provoking commentaries on urban

development.y In 1997, the City of Toronto sponsored a

conference titled "Jane Jacobs: Ideas That Matter",

which led to a book by the same name.




THE DEATH AND LIFE OF GREAT

AMERICAN CITIES1. This book is her most influentialAmerican book on urban

planning and cities. The book is a strong critique of the urban

renewal policies of the 1950s, which, she claimed, destroyed

communities and created isolated, unnatural urban spaces.2. Jacobs advocated the abolition of zoning laws and restoration of

free markets in land, which would result in dense, mixed-use

neighborhoods and frequently cited New York City's Greenwich

Village as an example of a vibrant urban community.3. Beyond the practical lessons in city design and planning that

Death and Life offers, the theoretical underpinnings of the work
