What a treat we had over this October halfterm. We visited the LoughboroughAutumn Dance Festival, which brings

competing dancers from all over the UK to BarrowUpon Soar to compete and have fun.

It was an action packed seven days showcasingsome of the best dancers in the Midlandsdemonstrating their skills and competing ineverything from Classical Ballet to Daring Aerobics. The programme perhaps reached its peak on thefinal Saturday with East Midlands Tap Modern andBallet Championship sections comprising a richselection of very talented young people, followedby the Intermediate Cabaret Groups.

Huge congratulations are due to our localcontingent, Charnwood School of Dance, whowon a fantastic number of medals and trophies:42 gold, 72 silver, 61 bronze and 37 fourth placemedals, along with 30 trophies.

A special mention goes to Keiran Allen who, together with 9 other exceptional dancers, washandpicked based on earlier performances duringthe seven days, and asked to perform in theBursary. The Bursary, with its prize of an 18” highsilver cup and £250, is well worth dancing for! However, Keiran did not just dance a brilliantroutine, he managed to dance the best routine andis now the proud owner of the Bursary prize. Welldone!

If you would like to get involved with theCharnwood School of Dance, they currently havesome room for more students in their regular RoyalAcademy of Dance Classical Dance Studies andthe Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance for thestage work – that is Tap Modern and Jazz Danceclasses.

If you don't want to get involved with competitivefestivals then that is not a problem, the competitionsare just a bonus for those that want to participate. As they say, “We all dance at the same school andin the same classes so we can all share in the goodstylish dancing and the knowledge that we are herewith some of the best dancers in the East Midlands. We're all friends and it's a nice feeling.”

Contact the Charnwood School of Dance byphone on 01509 412663 or by email [email protected]

Loughborough Dance FestivalThe Roundup!

Research has shown that exercising outdoors inattractive countryside has far greaterpsychological benefits than an indoor workout.

So pull on some walking boots and blow away thecobwebs! Studies have shown that we are far morelikely to exercise on a regular basis if we do so witha friend – make it a weekly appointment! Andwhilst you are on your walk, don’t forget to have achat and a good laugh together, for regularlaughter has been shown to lift the spirits. Justremember to keep your speed up – it’s going tohave to be a rather breathless chat and chortle –as moderately vigorous exercise will help releaseendorphins, the body’s natural mood enhancers.

Don’t try and fight your body's inclination forstodge: instead, prepare great pots of winter-warming vegetable soups using root

vegetables, pulses, greens, fresh herbs, or whatevertakes your fancy. Soups with little or no fat areremarkably satisfying and make a portable lunch –in a thermos flask – and a filling starter for yourevening meal. Then you’ll be able to have a smallportion of that rich cottage pie which you havebeen eying, along with a large side dish ofsteamed vegetables and you won’t even feeldeprived!

When Leicestershire-based Suzy Burnip’sparents celebrated their Ruby weddinganniversary, she really struggled to find

something that would remind them of their specialday on August 8th 1964. But unlike most of us,Suzy decided not to settle for any old card orpresent, instead embarking on a year-long projectto setup and launch a new online greetings cardsite that enables people to create cards forbirthdays, anniversaries and other occasionsbased on any date from the last fifty years.

Cards can be created with any top ten singleschart since 1960 or you can choose from a rangeof classic comic covers from the Beano, TheDandy, Jackie and Bunty and many more.

If comics or music are not your thing,Timecarpet.com has also licensed cover imagesfrom Haynes Manuals, so if your nearest anddearest ever dreamt of (or was lucky enough toown) a Triumph TR7, Golf GTI or even just ahumble Ford Fiesta, you’ll find the perfect cardon www.timecarpet.com

“I originally tried to find out what was number onein the charts on the day my parents got married butquickly realised there is a whole range of contentthat can take people back to an important momentin their lifetime.

I wanted to create a greetings card website thatwould let busy people find something very special, very quickly.

Timecarpet.com aims to evoke a memory bydelivering a card printed and posted on the sameday, to a special person's door.” Commented Suzy.

Suzy partnered with local web, print andmarketing expert, Craig Johnstone to setupwww.timecarpet.com, an online greetingscard site which launched in October 2010.

To celebrate the launch of Timecarpet.com,whatcanwedotoday.co.uk is offering itsreaders a 25% discount on all cardspurchased before 31st December 2010.Go to www.timecarpet.com/wcwdtcreate your card and enter the code“WCWDT25” at the checkout to qualifyfor your discount.

The places:All places described are Countryside Parks and public open spaces (Parking£1.50 - £2.50 where meters are present)

Beacon Hill – Top car park Less busy than Bradgate, good spots directly at top of car park which sooncompact and become icy, but fast. Softer snow found on smaller slopes directlybelow summit trig point. Exposed site so watch for wind chill. Other optionsinclude finding softer snow on slopes off the back of Beacon Hill that link to thelower circular trail and Lower Beacon car park.

Beacon Hill – Martin’s Wood - Dean’s Lane approachPark in layby – Gentle slopes accumulate snow to give giant snowball fun.

www.leics.gov.uk/beacon

Broombriggs Farm - Lower Broombriggs - Beacon Road car parkFor a sheltered and soft snow outing the slope above the car park is great forshort visits with little ones although you may find you do a lot of pushing!

Broombriggs Farm - Windmill HillFrom Lower Broombriggs follow the track up to to the old windmill; you’ll find steep slopes hurtlingdown into the back of Woodhouse Eaves. These are sheltered and not usually icy, but grown men havefailed on them!

Broombriggs Farm - Upper Broombriggs, Maplewell RoadPopular with Woodhouse locals. Steeper slope than Lower Broombriggs. Can also be approached by following the footpath west from LowerBroombriggs.

www.leics.gov.uk/broombriggs

Bradgate Park, Old John Car Park, Hunts Hill The most popular spot for sledging, not to mention skiers and the oddsnowboard if conditions are good! Look for slopes below the tower thatare steep and may best suit older kids. However if you work your way tothe saddle below the tower you’ll find gentler slopes. Exposed site. Watchfor rocks in the main sledging area.

Dust down your sledge, layer up the clothes and have fun!- Where to sledge and have fun on Charnwoods hills

“How much snow are we going to get this year Mum?”

This is my son’s favourite question at this time of the year. Last winter’s snow took us by surprise and we allhave the photos and tales to tell. First excitement was all about getting out locally and making the most ofyour local spaces. But once we realised the snow was going to linger, and that there might even be moreon the way, it was time to head for higher ground. Don’t forget that it’s always 1-2 degrees cooler on theCharnwood peaks and colder again with wind chill. This makes all the difference between slush on the A6and good snow fun higher up!

For those of you new to the area, or simply wanting to explore extra places with your kids, we’ve put togetherthis article as a handy guide on where to sledge and find snow in Charnwood for Winter 2010.

Warning: Never play on ornear a frozen pond or lake. You could fall through the ice, risking serious or fatal injury.

And if theres no snowMake the most out of frozen puddles and snakingtrails through frosty ground. Search for strange iceshapes, trapped bubbles and squeaky sounds frompoking ice at the edge of streams and lakes.

Bradgate Park-Main entrance Bradgate Road

Follow the brook next to the main path. Watch outfor icy patches and you can see frozen ponds inthe saddle below Old John.

Roughwood, Benscliffe Road(opposite Bradgate Park Old John car park)National Forest Park in the layby. This makes agreat excursion to find the hidden pond, but watchout for the steep banks and don’t step on the ice.

Top tips for keeping warm and happyoutdoors:• Hot chocolate in a flask (extra marshmallows

not compulsory but always appreciated!)

• Layer up your clothing and wear waterproofs if possible

• Not got a sledge? Then buy early (Argos and Geoffs Toys supply)

• Pack spare clothes in the car

• Remember it may be slushy by your house but frozen on higher ground

• Approach car parks with care – they can become very slippy!

• Don’t forget some treats

• Insulated gloves and extra thick socks for warm toes in wellies

• Bring change for the parking meter

• This is one of a series of articles about getting outdoors and having fun in your local parks and open spaces.

Have you ever askedyourself why we do whatwe do? For many of us

everything we do revolvesaround money. But have you everthought about what's importantabout money to you?

This is the first question FinancialPlanner Sue Richardson will askyou if you go to her for financialadvice. Sue specialises increating long-term financialstrategies and uses a FinancialRoad Map to create a picture ofher client's desired future.

Good financial planning is allabout what an individual wantsto achieve, and why they want toachieve it. The Financial RoadMap allows me to get to knowmy clients as much as they knowthemselves, so that they know Iam as passionate to reach theirgoals as they are. Experiencehas shown me that people arekeen to take on changes if theyhave a clear goal which theycan aim for. It is important thatpeople identify the shortfalls intheir current arrangements so thatthey have chance to make anychanges necessary. A plan that iseasy to understand andimplement can make all thedifference.

I make sure necessary actionsare detailed in a way my clientsunderstand and relate to. Then Imake them accountable fordoing them! Regular reviewmeetings then make sure that they

stay on track. Sue's approach isall about improving the overallquality of her clients' lives, andthe fact that she can make adifference to people's lives iswhat she loves so much abouther work.
