THURSDAY NIGHT ADULT ED
SIBLINGS: SECOND TEMPLE JUDAISM AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF EARLY CHRISTIANITY & RABBINIC JUDAISM
Taught by Dr. Steven Stark-Riemer
This course is presented in two parts each consisting of six 1.5 hour sessions, featuring a weekly presentation, discussion, and
handouts, and continues the study of the archaeology, history, and religion of Ancient Israel into the Second Temple Period.
Registration Fee for each part is $45. Classes meet on Thursday evenings from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Part 1: The Development of Sectarian Judaism during the Second Temple Period
We begin with the destruction of the First Temple and the fate of the elite who are exiled, and the rest of Judean society that
remain in the land under Babylonian rule. In succeeding sessions, we will focus on the reestablishment of authority, the building of
the Second Temple, the coming of Hellenism, and the beginnings of sectarian Judaism. We will see that the tendency toward
differing ritual practice and belief that characterized religion in Ancient Israel continues into the Second Temple Period. The
origins and development of various sects within Second Temple Judaism (Pharisees, Sadducees, Essenes, etc.) will be explored.
Classes on: September 12 and 26; October 17 and 24; November 7 and 21.
Part 2: Second Temple Judaism and the Development of Early Christianity & Rabbinic Judaism
We begin with two sessions on the sect responsible for gathering, preserving, and authoring the Dead Sea Scrolls, before focusing
chiefly on the two Jewish sects that survive the national catastrophe of 70 CE that was the defeat at the hands of the Romans and
the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple. In the aftermath, Second Temple Judaism would give birth to both Early Christianity and
its somewhat younger sibling, Rabbinic Judaism. During these sessions, we will explore the roots of both, their responses to the
First and Second Revolts against Rome, their early development, and their “Parting of the Ways”. Classes on: April 16 and 30; May 14
and 21; June 11 and 25.
An attorney by profession, Steven Stark-Riemer graduated magna cum laude from the City College of New York in 1972, studying
Anthropology, and specializing in Archaeology. He participated in fieldwork at the Tell Gezer excavations in Israel under the
direction of William G. Dever, today’s preeminent American biblical archaeologist. Following graduation, he was elected to the Phi
Beta Kappa Society and accepted into the doctoral program in Anthropology at UCLA. Though he did not formally pursue this line
of study, his interest in the archaeology, history, and religion of the biblical world continues, and he is well-read in these fields, and
in biblical studies, generally. Since 2007, Mr. Stark-Riemer has taught courses on Ancient Israel at area synagogues and lifelong
learning programs, and has acquired a devoted following in the Capital District.

WHAT’S
YOUR LEGACY?
The Grinspoon Foundation held
its annual gathering in Springfield
in May and the Northeast Capital
Region was represented by 13
people, including our members
Laura Ehrich, Jonathan Falk, and
Paula Metzner (pictured right). It
was a wonderful opportunity to
discuss ideas with Harold
Grinspoon, to learn from outstanding presenters, to share with
other Life & Legacy participants, and to eat delicious food. We
are fortunate to only be a drive away as people came from as far
as Calgary, Canada and San Diego. The Life & Legacy program is
helping to insure the future of our Jewish community far into the
future. You too can join us to make a difference. To learn more,
please contact Paula Metzner at [email protected].
