ROAD RACINGnews

Moto3™ rider Ana Carrasco rode her way into the history books at Sepang, becoming the first female rider in well over a decade to score a World Championship point.

Carrasco, 16 years of age and hailing from Murcia in south-eastern Spain, made her World Championship debut with Team Calvo at the start of this season, riding alongside Moto3™ title contender Maverick Viñales. Prior to Malaysia, Carrasco’s best finishing position had been 17th at the Indianapolis Grand Prix in August. At Sepang, Carrasco qualified 19th on the grid and collected the final point for 15th place in a dramatic fight to the finish line, becoming the first female rider to score points in the Moto3™ class. “I think I had a very good race and I am very pleased. Now we have to keep working as hard as possible in order to pick up many more.” commented Ana. Carrasco’s achievement makes her the first female rider to score a World Championship point since Germany’s Katja Poengsen finished 14th in the 250 Italian Grand Prix of 2001, at Mugello. However, no female rider had scored in the lightweight class for some 18 years; the last was Tomoko Igata of Japan, who was seventh at Brno in the 125 Czech Grand Prix of 1995.

Breaking news – 2014 season for Ana Carrasco RW Racing GP has signed Ana Carrasco for the 2014 Moto3 campaign. The Dutch team and the Spanish rider have agreed on a one-year deal.

Surprising Maria Herrera

In the category for a second season, Maria did not begin the year as a title favourite, having picked up just a single point in her debut season the previous year. However, she surprised us all with her consistency at MotorLand and, above all, her tremendous cornering speed while starting to build up an enviable reputation.

Maria’s progress in the current CEV Moto3 season would appear to be unstoppable. Several weeks ago she raised eyebrows once again thanks to a convincing victory in Navarra – a victory that confirmed well and truly that the Aragon win earlier in the season was not just a flash in the pan.

Maria’s career takes another step up the ladder with her debut in the Moto3 World Championship as a wildcard in Aragon. It was certainly a memorable weekend for Maria. “It was the World Championship. Obviously I was a bit nervous but I intended to take it easy, learn from the others and gain experience.”

With both Maria and Ana Carrasco competing in Moto3, the event counted two female riders on the grid – it was the first time it had happened since 1994.

TRACKRacing Bio Micaela Bazán - Argentinian Speedway Rider

Micaela lives in Argentina and has been into Speedway for 17 years now. Her first time on a bike was at the age of 6 and she began racing at 7 years old. Why did you choose Speedway? “Choosing Speedway was natural to me. It is some kind of heritage as my father competed in Speedway in the era of the 70's and 80's here in Argentina”. How is it to race with men? “It is not easy, but women can definitively compete with men and are sometimes even better! I have always been treated well. Outside the track all the riders are friends and colleagues but at the track when the race starts, we are all rivals and want to win. I'm the only woman but I am like them all, a competitor”. What is your objective? I think that I’ve accomplished several of my goals – I was able to take part in the U21 champion in Argentina a few seasons ago which was really a great opportunity. My objective after all my achievements is to compete in Europe. It would really be a dream come true. I am currently looking for all possible opportunities to join some European competitions and I really hope to make it happen. Who is your favourite rider? Emil Sayfutdinov is my idol, he is the rider I admire the most.

Shayna Texter’s Flat Track successes just keep on sliding up! Shayna’s talents have made history as she is the first woman in 50 years of AMA Grand National racing to ever win a GNC Pro Singles Main Event. Shayna competed in numerous amateur championships over the next four years accumulating a long list of victories and championships, earning her the distinction of being named 2006 AMA Female Rider of the year. Shayna went pro in 2007 and continued to advance her skills adding more victories, including two additional AMA Pro Singles wins at Sacramento and another first at Knoxville. “Being the first female to win an AMA Pro Singles was totally awesome” says Shayna. “It took a while for it to really sink in. I had to go back and re-watch the video to make sure it wasn’t a dream. Off track Shayna is constantly on the go. “In addition to racing” she says, “I attend the CalU (California University of Pennsylvania) and I am majoring in sports management. When not in school, I work on my bikes. Any other spare time I have is spent with my family”.

WOMEN IN MOTORCYCLING NEWSLETTER 2013 | Issue 4

MXnews At Senkvice, Slovakia, Chiara Fontanesi secured her second FIM Women’s Motocross World championship. It did not seem as simple as last year, when she was already crowned after the penultimate round.

Q: Second title in the pocket; it was harder this year, am I right?

Chiara: Yes, first of all because Meghan Rutledge came over to do the whole championship and Steffi Laier is back. She is an ex-champ and she knows the game. Also Natalie Kane is stronger this year, so I have been battling with very strong girls the whole season.

Q: With two world titles under your belt, what are your plans for 2014?

Chiara: Difficult to say at this stage. For sure WMX but with only 6 rounds I would need to find more races to train hard for the full year. So I am looking at extra options to do more races, maybe ADAC Masters if there is an opportunity. Racing with guys teaches you a lot and I would like to do some of these rounds to improve myself. The focus will be to defend my WMX title.

Q: How do you feel about the WMX being combined with the MXGP in 2014?

Chiara: Well in some ways it is good as there are usually bigger crowds. I must say I felt so much at home with the MX3 people during the last two years; it was a big family feeling. In Pacov, Czech Republic, there were 7000 spectators for our races. MX1 is a step up in some ways; a bigger show and they attract bigger crowds.

MXcontinental news María Eugenia Lorca FIM Latin America Women’s Motocross Champion

Venezuelan rider María Eugenia Lorca clinched the Latin American Women’s Motocross title after an exciting competition with twenty seven riders at the Parque Extremo de Guayaquil in Ecuador. For her first appearance in the continental event which included a women’s category for the second time, María Lorca took the crown by winning the second heat to score an impressive 47 points. The second place went to Valentina Galaz of Chile and the third to Alexandra López of Honduras.

Lorca, aboard a Yamaha, had to win the closing one to take the title, but she did not let the chance elude her, triumphing after another hard-fought duel with Galaz, a youngster of just 14 years old, who took the runner-up spot for the second year in a row. The 23 year old Lorca, who hails from Maracay, clocked up the best qualifying time on the Saturday, just one tenth of a second ahead of fellow Venezuelan Katherine Oviedo, who dropped out in the fourth lap after clocking up the fastest lap time.

This was a first international title for María Eugenia Lorca, who is currently second in the National Women’s Motocross Championship, and her next challenge is to return to the FIM Women’s World Motocross Championship, in which she took part several times in late 2011 and early 2012 until an injury forced her to return to Venezuela.

ENDUROnews Magnificent Sanz crowned at St Flour

Spain’s Laia Sanz (Honda) was crowned during the final event of the Enduro Women’s World Cup that took place in St Flour, France. Ending her day second overall in the Women’s Cup, Laia Sanz successfully defended her world title. “To win two Enduro world titles is an amazing feeling,” admitted Laia. “It’s been an eventful season. Missing one day of the championship and then suffering some problems yesterday has made things tough. But I’m glad I could win the title. It’s been a brilliant end to the year for me.” Britain’s Jane Daniels (Husaberg) took the second place and France’s Juliette Berrez (Yamaha) completed the top three. Source: abc click for more info

ISDEnews Australia’s Women Rule! France was the nation to beat in both the FIM World Trophy and Junior World Trophy classes, but in the Women’s World Trophy it was Australia who rounded out the centennial edition of the FIM International Six Days Enduro (ISDE) as deserved champions. “It’s been a great week for me and the Australian team. The goal of the Aussie team was to try and win, which we did, so we’re all really, really happy" Jess Gardiner said, one of the three winning riders. “The level of support we’ve received from the Aussie team’s just been great. It makes such a difference to have people cheering you on at every special test. Heading home with a winning result makes all the hard work worthwhile. It’s a long way off at this time, but I can't wait to race in Argentina next year, hopefully we can get another win” declared Jemma Wilson.

TRIALnews Lucky thirteen for Sanz

Laia Sanz (Montesa) had to suffer an agonising wait before she finally discovered that she had won the closing round of the 2013 FIM Women’s Trial World Championship and in doing so she claimed a record extending thirteenth individual title in this discipline. Sanz once again engaged in a day-long duel with her main rival Emma Bristow (Sherco), with only a few marks separating the two title contenders throughout the three laps of twelve sections. Back from the leading duo, the competition for the last remaining podium place was equally tense and led to Rebekah Cook (Beta) taking the third place of the Championship. TRIALof Nations A season to remember for Women’s Trial

Great Britain, represented by Emma Bristow (Sherco), Rebekah Cook (Beta) and Joanne Coles (Gas Gas), was the worthy winner of the 2013 FIM Women’s Trial des Nations held in La Chatre (France) closing the season for the female Trial riders. The podium was completed by the Spanish team consisting of Sandra Gomez (Gas Gas), Mireia Conde (Beta) and Elisabeth Solera (Gas Gas) on the second step and the German Team on the third with Theresa Bauml (Ossa), Ina Wilde (Sherco) and Jessica Wulf (Beta). The female riders were out in force with around forty girls from all the main European countries plus those from Australia, Japan, America and New Zealand. Using the opportunity of so many Women riders being gathered in one place, the FIM President, Mr Ippolito confirmed the FIM’s support for the continued work being done to improve the status of Women’s sport within the International Federation. Historical Women

BESSIE STRINGFIELD Imagine being an African-American woman motorcyclist riding in the 1930’s around a deeply divided segregated South. Bessie Stringfield did not have to imagine it. She lived it.

Born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1911, she migrated to Boston, orphaned, by the age of 5. An Irish woman adopted her and gave the courageous young girl her first motorcycle, while she was in high school. At 16 years old, Bessie sat on a 1928 Indian Scout. She had no training at all but her natural gift for riding proved useful. In Bessie’s lifetime she owned 27 Harleys, travelled to 48 states, rode eight solo cross-country tours, served in the U.S. Army as a motorcycle dispatch rider, became a licensed practical nurse, founded the Iron Horse Motorcycle Club and once

(disguised as a man) she won a flat track race in Miami, FL. Upon removing her helmet, she was denied the prize money but her appetite for life did not go without notice. The press dubbed Bessie as the “Motorcycle Queen of Miami.” After over 60 years of riding, Bessie Stringfield died in 1993. She was 82. Unwittingly, Bessie blazed a trail for other women to follow. The American Motorcycle Association (AMA) established the Bessie Stringfield Award to recognise women leaders in motorcycling. She balanced more than two wheels. Bessie managed to handle sexism and racism with a positive, resilient spirit.

ANKE EVE GOLDMANN

Anke Eve Goldmann was a journalist for Cycle World, Das Motorrad in Germany, Moto Revue in France and other motorcycle magazines internationally.

In the 1950′s, Anke competed in endurance and track racing at the Nurburgring and Hockenheimring but being a woman, she was barred from higher level competitions. As well as riding like a pro she was also a ground breaking style icon and designer. Anke was the first woman to ride a motorcycle with a one-piece leather racing suit. She designed with German manufacturer Harro, developing one of the first ranges of protective motorcycling

clothing suitably cut for women. In 1958, she helped found the Women’s International Motorcycle Association in Europe. Anke Eve Goldmann was also the inspiration for the main character, ‘Rebecca’, in André Pieyre de Mandiargues’ most popular book ‘The Motorcycle’ written in 1963. The book was adapted for the 1968 film ’The Girl on a Motorcycle’ starring Marianne Faithful, what a trail blazer!

BEYOND SPORTnews EICMA - The Power Image

“Motorcyclists have changed” was the claim that accompanied the 71st edition of the EICMA (International Motorcycle Show), one of the world’s most important events entirely devoted to two-wheel vehicles that took place in Milan on 5-10 November 2013. The basic consideration supported by this claim stemmed from observations of current society and the way two-wheel vehicles have evolved. A female motorcycle rider was the subject chosen by EICMA’s media agency to illustrate this claim, notably because more and more women are using two-wheel vehicles and are an integral part of the motorcycle world; and to stress that those two-wheel vehicles can also be a safe mode of travel. It is really interesting to see that women are part of motorcycling and can be associated with values such as safety, a sense of responsibility and awareness. Source: EICMA click for more info

DOCUMENTARY - Driven To Ride

The new documentary “Driven to Ride” explores the fast-growing trend—and surprising history—of women on motorcycles. Award-winning documentarian Michelle Carpenter, assistant professor of digital design in the College of Arts & Media at the University of Colorado, Denver, captured footage of five fearless Colorado riders. “Through making the documentary, I have met and learned about legendary women in motorcycling. The women riders in “Driven to Ride” represent a diverse group of riders: successful businesswomen, mothers, daughters, sisters. They are strong and caring individuals; each has a story to tell about why she’s driven to ride in this documentary.
