October, 1964

W HAT ABOUT PATRIOTISM? Is itright, or wrong? A younglady has just asked me that

question. She had just recently returnedfrom Ambassador College in England, where she had studied for the past twocollege years.

" I am an American," she said. " Ilove this country. Is that wrong? Yetwhile I was in England I felt I oughtnot express any feeling of love for myown country. I was afraid it mightstir up nationalistic prejudice. Ofcourse, I love England, too, after havinglived there for two years."

Th is young lady wanted to knowjust how God considers patriotism. Some people seem to think that patriotism is a form of idolatry-and therefore a sin. She was a little confused.

"WHY should it be wrong to havea feeling of IO\'e for my own country?"she asked.

" It im'/.'" I replied.Wrong to love your own country ?

Of course not! Didn 't Jesus teach thatwe should love even our enemies? LOVEisn't wrong!

But why, then, do some seem to thinkpatriotism is idolatry?

The answer lies in asking anotherquestion : Just what do )'0// meanPATRIOTISM? Here was a young ladywho had an attitude of LO VE for theUnited States of America. It is hernative land. She ougbt to love it! Shesaid she also loved England . Her kindof patriot ism is RIGHT-it is coon-s-iris completely in line with the basicLAW Of GOD!

But there is a different kind of patriotism which, indeed, is wrong inthe sight of God.

Let me explain it so ALL can reallyUNDERSTAND! How do we know whatis right, and what is wrong? Wh at isthe Biblical defin ition of sin? It isfound in I John 2:4: "Sin is thetransgression of the LAW." It is referring, of course, to the Law of God.

The PLAIN TRUTH

Th is is a spiritual law (Rom. 7:1 4).That law is fulfilled (pe rformed) byLO VE. That law is summed up by thetwo Great Commandments-c-t.ovs toward God, and LOV E toward humans :"Thou shalt love thy neighbor asthJfelf."

The Law does not allow us to loveourselves as much as GOD. It says onemust love God with all his heart, soul, and might. To fail is SIN . Surely ALL

have sinned! But the Law allows usto love our own selves as milch ashuman neighbor. And to love )'ourneighbor as milch as l Ollrsel! is aboutas much as you are capable of lovingyour neighbor-isn' t it?

A year or more ago, in this column,I went to some length defin ing SE LF.

There is, first, your individual self. That includes your own body and mind. You love yourself just about as muchas you are capable of loving. But then, there is also your ex/ended self. Th isincludes your clothes. Then it enlargesa little further, to include your ownfamily, your home, your car, your possessions. You call them YOllrs . Th eybecome a part of you. Then the extended self expands to include thosein your club, your church, )'our group, your lodge, or even your political party. It expands, still further, to includeYOUR COU NTRY.

Now self-love is natural. But to loveyour enemy is NOT natural. W henJesus said we should love even ourenemies, the reporter, Matthew, whoreported His statement (Matthew5:43-48), wrote origina lly in the Greeklanguage. And for the word translated"love" in our English language, Matthew wrote the Greek word "agape"which actually means the divine lovewhich we do not have naturally-butwhich GOD may impart by the gift ofHis Holy Spirit.

We are not born with this "agape"- this divine love. We are born selfish.Watch a sweet, lovely little baby. It is

altogether selfish. It loves itself, andhas a natural feelin g of antagoni smtoward others. Jesus referred to thisnatu ral love-with which we are born- the " love" of human nature. He said,"Ye have heard tha t it hath been said,Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and hatethine enemy" ( Mat. 5 :43).

But, you see, this natural humannature love looks on those outside itsextended self as its enemy.

When we are thi nking and speakingof national considerations, human nature is patriotic toward one's owncountry-because it then becomes partof his extended SELF. And so there isa feeling of antago nism against anothercoun try, when brought into comparisonwith his own. Actually, it is a form ofHATE.

Th e world 's CIVILIZATIO N is actually[onnded on that kind of carnal attitude .It is the natural attitude of competition.

Take sports, for example. Americancolleges and un iversities, most of them ,engage in inte rcolleg iate athletics. College " A" has a football team. So college"A" and its team becomes part of theextended SELF of that college's students . But the football team of college" B" is regarded as its ENEMY. Thenatural attitude is one of wanting toBEAT college "B ." It is a form (youmay call it a mild form ) of H ATE . Itis a feeling of defin ite antagonismtoward the foot ball team of college" B."

A good example of the competitivespir it in th is collective SELF may beseen righ t now, in the po litical campaigns. Under "works of the flesh"described as the opposite of the " fruitof thi s Spirit," in Galatians 5, we findthese (Moffatt translation): "N owthe deeds of the flesh [SINs] are quiteobvious, such as sexua l vice, impuri ty,sensua lity, idolatry, magic, quarrels, dissension, jealousy, tem per , rivalry, facnons, party-spirit, envy, murd er, drink ing bouts , revelry, and the like; I tellyou befo rehand as I have told you already, that people who indulge in suchpractices will never inherit the Realm[ Kingdom] of God ." ( Gal. 5 :19·2 1.)

Among these SINS, imposing theCAPITAL PUNISHMENT of etern al death, are rivalr y, factions, party-spirit.

What do we see in national politics?

Th, PLAIN TRUTH

The Democratic Party is full of PART¥SPIRIT-and so is the Repu blican Party,An election is coming up in Britain, and we find that same PARTY-SPIRIT inboth the Tories and the Labor Party.

What do we see in the Amer icanPresiden tial campaign ? Do we seeRIVALRY ? Do we see FACTIONS? Dowe see a spirit of discr imination againstthe opposite party , or candid ates ?

What do we see- or hear-today,in campaign speeches asking for thevotes of the peopl e ? Do we see reallofty STAT ESM ANS HIP of high caliber, based on wisdom and right judgment?Or do we see mud -slinging attemptingto undermine the opponent' s reputation, reminiscent of the Keystone moviecomedies, where they threw pies in oneanother 's faces ? Do we see anyth ingexcept rivalry, faction isrn, party-spirit ?Love for my party. and hate for yours?

WHY do so many love to see a prize figh t today? Two men square off inthe ring. If one can so harm, pummel, beat, and in jure his opponent that heknocks him senseless, he is the winner- the HERo~he gets the plaudits ofthe people!

The general idea in compet ition isnot alone to GET, to WIN, to ACQUIRE,for the SELF. It is also to hurt, injure, harm, take from the other partywhether the other be an ind ividual, ateam, a polit ical party, or a nat ion . Itis the spir it of DISCRIMINATION!

Look at competition in business. Iknew two retail clothing merchants ,Their rival stores were directly acrossthe street fro m one anothe r. Dur ingbusiness hour s they would glare at oneanother with venomous hatred . Out sideof business hours they would go to thesynagogue arm in arm like lovingbrother s. The spirit of the synagog ue,it seems, was love. But the spirit ofbusiness is competitio n- with its element of hate.

Years ago-before my conversion, Ihasten to add- I heard of a bank inthe nor thwestern part of Iowa, whohad just built a new baok building.Across the street was a rival bank. Th eybuilt one just twice as big- as muchto make the rival look small, as to makethem look big. I took the train to thistown , showed the officers of the largerbank a full page advertisement I had

October, 1964

designed for a bank journal. TIleylooked at it. decided it would not profitthem, and said "No."

"W ell that' s too bad," I said , "be·cause thi s is an exclusioe proposition. If yOIl take it, the bank across the streetcan' t get it."

Th ey quickly change d the " No" toa "YES!" Reason ? Not to help themselves-but to spite their competitor!J assure you I would never sell suchan ad on that basis today.

This illu strates the principle of pa·trioti sm.

The patriotism which loves its owncountry, and hates, or feels a prejudi ceagainst, other countri es, is a violat ionof God 's Law- and therefore it isWRONG-it is SIN!

But the young lady who asked methis question did not have thaI kind of"patriot ism." She also loved Eng land. Her patriotism was not competitive. Itwas not fou nded on hate, but on LOVE.

Now if, by the term "Russia" wemean the Russian people, I could truthfully say I love Russia! I love the Russian PEOPLE-but I do not love the irCommunist SYSTEM, I HATE communism!

Let' s get it straight. GOD loves thisWORLD'S PEOPLE so much He gav e H isonly begotten Son for them. Chr istloved sinners so much that He diedfor them. But God HATE S SIN ! God 'shatred of SIN expresses H is LOVE forthe sinner-because SIN is the sinner'senemy, seeking to destroy him !

Th e pat riot ism that LOVES your owncountry, but withoH! discriminationagaiwt OTHER nat ions, IS A RIGHTPATRIOTISM. Remember, God is NOT arespecter of persons. GOD DOES NOTDISCRIMIN ATE. Let not the whites feelor express discrimination against blacks-or the blacks against the wh ites. Letnot Americans feel or express discrimination against British, nor Britishagainst Americans.

Let's divorce HATE from LOVE ! Thatis God' s Law. Th at is the WAY to peaceand happiness. W e may hate a wrongTHING, but not our neighbor !

But can pat riot ism ever be idolatry?Yes, it can and of ten is. Idolatry is

having another god before the one trueGod . And what is your GOD ? What·

The " impl osion" is the huge, steadystream of rural dwellers, leaving theland, floodin g into the cities of theworld, causing unbelievable congest ionof people, industries, houses and vehicles- and creati ng stupefying problems of public health .

The cities of the world "alreadypresent healt h problems of stagge ringdimensions ," W HO said. But this ison ly a small PART of the truly GIGANTIC problems inherent in the population explosion. Police are alarmed. T ime afte r time, law enforcement officials have beenaghast at cold, aloof, calloused publicindifference to heinous crimes. Citizens stand and watch while a woma nis raped. Of far more concern than the stockpiling of nuclear weapons today is thenew worry of scientists, agriculturalistsand economists. They worry aboutFAMINE!

More D angerou s ThanHydrogen Bomb

Today, scientists are working to unlock the mysteries of human reproduction.

They're engaged in a frantic, lastditch race against time.

Their adversaries are myriad. They seek, somehow, to find a solu

right aUHlJtI'S, they say, THIS WORLDIS DOOMED!

Today, judging by present trendsand assuming birth rates do 110t increase, scientists predict this earth'spopulation will DOUB LE to 6 BILLIONperso ns by the year 2000.

It will REDOUBLE by 2035, just 35short years later, they say, to TWELVEBIL LION!

But all this is somehow unreal to theaverage American, Briton, Australian.Huge figu res, distant dates, alarmingwo rds about "some day" fail to penetrate the thick blanket of public indifference shrouding the well-fed W estern world. FAMINE W as Prophesied

One of the major prophecies of yourBible is of DROU GHT, FAM INE, STAR VA

And these stri king prophecies of theBible are 110/ vague "generalities,"based upon the obvious likelihood ofrecurring dry cycles-but definite, spe·cifie, positive events-naming the nations, telling \X'HEN and WHY!

Anciently, the Creator pronounced aperpetual prophecy upon our peoples.Turn to Deuteronomy, the 28th chap 'ter. Read it all! Th is means OUR

peoples, now! ( If you have not yetseen the amazing proofs of the identity of our peop les in Bible prophecy, then write for our free booklet, "TheUnited Slates and the Briti sh Commonwealth ill Prophecy" immediately.)

"But it shall come to pass, if thouwilt NOT hearken unto the voice of theLORD thy God, to observe to do allHis commandments and His statuteswhich I comma nd you th is day; that allthese curses shall come upon thee, and

The PLAIN TRUTH

ove rtake thee :

"CURSED shalt thou be in the city"[and LOOK at the wretc hed asphalt andconcrete jungles of ours-where rape, robbery, murder, race riots, sexual depravity, poverty vene real disease andpornography run rampant !} "andCURSED shalt thou be in the field."

Today, as never before, that curse iscoming true! It is real !

Not only have we broken God'sspiritual laws involvi ng every facet ofbow to lire happily, but we havebroken the many "natural" laws involving the proper U SE of our lands!

God said, "CURSED shall be thybasket and thy store . Cursed shall bethe fruit of your body [ and LOOK atthe "thalidomide" babies, the malformed babies, blind , deaf, seriouslyhandicapped babies, at the stillbirths,Mongoloids, Siamese twins, and at themany thousands of infants born eachyear with serious congenital diseases, even such as cancer, heart defects, leukemia, and a host of others!] andthe fruit of your land, the increase ofyour kine [cattle}, and the flocks ofyour sheep ."

Today, lustful man dumps millionsof pounds of chemica l fertilizers, insecticides and fungicides onto hisfields in a greedy attempt to wringevery last dollar out of his land . Stud ies have shown residual poisons buildup in the land, drain off during therainy season into the ditches , streamsand rivers-where, in many areas, commercial f ishing has been tota lly wipedout' Surely blind, stupid man shouldhave enough sense to be a lilliealarmed? Apparent ly not. At least, atthis writing, IN SPITE O F exte nsivestatistics comp iled over a period ofyears concerning the almost incrediblewaste of wildlife, fish, and the continued pollution of both land andwater-the chemicals are still beingdumped on!

First, the farmers fertilize the landartificially. Second , they spray andchemically treat the land to kill "harmful" insects, fungus, and microbes.

Then, as the struggling plantsemerge from the so il, they are sprayedagain and again against the ravages ofpersistently spray·proof bugs and insects of all kinds. Finally, barr ing all

the possible blights, insect attacks, unheard-of weather ravages, and suddenlyshifting markets, the farmer sells hisproduct.

Again, it may be sprayed or treatedwith a preservative before it gets to theshelf where it is purc hased by the con sumer.

A single drop of some of these unbelievably potent sprays, such as Lindane, wou ld KILL a grown man, iffa lling only on the back of bis handyet these poisons are diluted andsprayed extensively ove r our fieldswhere rodents , rabbits, ground squirrels, quail, pheasants, and all sorts ofwildlife are found lying dead-allthis; and still we continue to ignore thegreat God who controls the weather, believing we can fight God, fightnature, fight the weather, fight theland and still succeed!

God said, "T he Eternal sha ll smitethee with a consumption, and with afever, and with an inflammation, andwith an ext reme burning, and with thesword [accord ing to some ancient versions: drought] , and with blasting, and with mildew; and they shall pur·sue you unti l you perish! And yourheaven that is over your head shall bebrass and the earth that is under theeshall be iron.

'The Eternal shall make the rain ofyour land powder and dmt : from heaven shall it come down upon thee unti lthou be destroyed!" ( Deut 28:22-24.)

Yes, DROUGHT, FAM INE, DISEASE

were prophesied-and no amount of"reasoning," "kidding ourselves," orsimply igno ring the facts wi ll everchange it.'

Worsening Conditions inthe United St ate s

The handwriting is on the wall forthe United States and Great BritainNOW! Not only does the frighteningspecter of the sraroing million! of themany "have-not " nations rear its ugly

head on the horizon, but increasingly, crop damage , drought, flooding, severetemperatures, and shifting marketsplague the average stockman andfarmer.

American homes and marriages areso wretched and miserable that fullyHALF of all murders in our "Christian"land involve a man MU RDER ING hisown wife, or vice versa!

And around the world, the specterof the bloody WARS in Vietnam, Cyprus, the Congo and elsewhere continues each rear. Ominously, the socalled "Nuclear Club" is rapid ly becoming less exclusive so that with in afew years even minor dictators andmadmen may possess the power toannihilate major cities!

Scientists, statesmen and po liticia nsagree that world government and aninternational rule of LAW is the onlyanswer. But the pi tiful spectacle pre·senred by the impotent, bungling, bankrupt and divided United Nationsis certainly not the answer.

T here is 110 world government nowin sight and , seemingly, NO PEACE

which we live.

The Chaos of Culrs

In addition to the chaos and confusion amo ng the nations, there is g reatreligious coniusion in the westernworld today. In the United Statesalone, there are over [our bundredreligious bodies and sects all callingthemselves " Christian."

Th ey all claim to believe in the sameChrist. Yet they all DIFF ER on themessage H e preached, and on the doctrines and practices that ought to bein H is Chu rch.

In orde r to get arou nd this prob lem, some denominations are now becom ing"broadmind ed" in the varying kinds ofdoctrines and ideas they will permitthe ir members to hold. A recent newsitem shows that in the case of onedenomination making up such a"broadminded" statement of belief."the effect was to arrive at a statementthat would include the essentia ls, butbe broad enough for persons of varying po ints of view."

In this modern day, is it important

which MESSAGE u'e believe?

Today many modern ministers say,"Just believe on the name of the LordJesus Christ, and you shall be saved."\Vhat you believe about Christ and Hismessage is not so impor tan t-they wi lloften say-as it is to believe on andlove Hi m and H is person.

An Inspired WARNING

The impired answer to tha t qu est ionis found in the fir st chapte r of Paul' sepistle to the Christ ians in Galatia . Theapostle of Christ was ALARMED thatthese peop le were already turn ing aside- NOT from Christ' s person, but [romH is message!

"I marvel that you are so soon removed from Hi m that called you intothe grace of Christ unto another gospel : which is not another ; but there besome that trouble you, and would PERVERT the gospel of Christ" (GalatiansI :6-7).

N otice th at Paul is ala rmed becausepeop le were perverting the tru th aboutChrist 's MESSAGE-not about H is person. He cont inued: " But though we. oran angel from heaven , preach any othergospel unto you than that which wehave preached unto you, let him beACCU RSED." Th en Paul repeated this denunciation-made this a double cnrse.

..As we said before, so say I now

agai n, If au)' man preach any othergospel to you than that you have received. let h im be ACCURSED" ( vss. 8·

In the Apostle Paul's mind, there wasonly O N E true gospel-any other gospel was a cotm terj eit that demanded aCURSE by apostolic autho rity !

What was this true gospel that Paulwas trying to keep in its pu re state ?What was the T RUT H that God sent tothis world by Jesus Christ His Son ?

Chrisr W as A MESSEN GER

Christ came with a meJJage fromGod the Father which would solve theproblems of this last generation onearth today !

Note the prophecy in Malachi regarding His first coming. "Behold, Iwill send my 1J1eJJcllger, and he shallprepare the way before Me: and theLord, Whom you seek, shall suddenlycome to His temple. even the JUeI sel1ger of the COVel1a11l, Whom yedelight in : behold, He shall comesaith the LORD of hosts" (Mal. 3:1) :

Actually, here is Christ-as theLogos or Spokesman of the Old Testament speaking-and saying that Hewould send a messenger before Hisface who would prepare the way forHim, Christ, who was to be the AfesJinger of the Covenant ,

In Acts 10 we find a description ofthat message as it was first preached tothe Gentil e Christians. The first part ofthe chapter shows hew Cornel ius waschosen as the fi rst Genti le to receivethe true gospel of Christ, and howPeter was sent to his house to bringthe truth of God. In verse -34 we read,"Then Peter opened his mouth, andsaid, Of a truth I perceive that Godis no respecter of persons : but in everynation he that feareth Him , and worketh righteousness, is accepted withHim" ( Acts 10:34 -35 ) . Here Peteracknowledges that now God is callingall the Genti les to the same truth thathad recently been opened to the Jewssince the day of Pentecost.

He continues : "The word whichGod sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (Heis Lord of all: ) that word, I say, yeknow, which was published throughoutall Judea, and began from Galilee, afterthe baptism which John preached"(vss. 36-37) . Directly inspired of Godto reach this first Gentile Christian,Peter immediately refers to the TRUTH

as that word which God sent by Christ,to Israel. beg inning from Galilee, afterJohn' s preaching.

Peter referred to this as the messagefor botb Israel and the Gentiles. So thiswas God 's MESSAGE for all mankind .'

T he MESSAGE Jesus Brought

Now let's f ind where that message

The PLAIN TRUTH

really began, and what Jesus actuallytaught ! Turning to the first chapter ofMark we find the conditions thatPeter gave for the beginning of thistrue message.

"N ow after that John was put inprison"-this was to be the time"Jesus" - here is the AfeJSenger "came into Galilee"-here is the place-"preaching the gospel of the Kingdom of God, and saying, the time isfulfilled, and the Kingdom of God isat hand : Repent ye and believe thegospel" (Mk. 1:14-15) .

Here we find the true Messenger, thetime and the place. And here we findthe true MESSAGE of God ! It is theGood News or Gospel of the Kingdomof God. Moffatt translates it "Reign"of God. It is the happy message ofGod 's Kingdom-His RULE-His GOVERNME NT which will finally bringpeace over this earth !

Noti ce that this true gospel is notman's gospel about the person ofChrist. It is Christ's message. It is themessage He brought from God theFather of the coming govem ment ofGod, or Kin gdom of God on thisearth.

And it is VITAL that you believeand obey this message! For Jesus said:"He that rejecteth me, and receivethnot my words, hath One that judgethhim : the Word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the lastday" (John 12:48) . So Jesus said youwill be judged by His lV ord-Hismessage!

Jesus Christ ALWAYS taught aboutthe Kingdom of God. Luke records:"And it came to pass afterwards thatHe went through out every city andvillage, preaching and showing theglad tidings of the Kingdom of God :and the twelve were with Him" (Lk.8 :1).

Even Jesus' parables were all concerned with the Kingdom of God." And His disciples asked Him, saying,Wh at might this parable be? And Hesaid, Unto you it is g iven to knowthe mysteries of the Kingdom of God,but to others in parables; that seeingthey might not see, and hearing theymight not understand" (Lk. 8:9-10).

Since Jesus Christ and all of theapostles and prophets spoke continually

October, 1964

about the Kingdom of God, we needto understand what a kingdom is.

W har Is A Kingdom ?

There are [osr things which characterize every kingdom. First, there is aking or ruling agent. Secondly, there isa territory over which the kingdomholds dominion . Thirdly, there are subjects or citizens in every real kingd om.And, fourthly, every kingdom musthave laws and a form of gov ernment.

N ow let's understand how God'sKingdom is so organized. Isaiah reveals who will be the king or rulingagent in the coming world gov ernment.

" And there shall come forth a rodout of the stem of Jesse, and a Branchshall grow out of His roots: And theSpirit of the LORD shall rest uponHim . . . He shall not judge after thesight of His eyes . . . But with righteousness shall He judge the poor .. .and He shall smite the earth with therod of His mouth, and with thebreath of His lips shall He slay thewicked" ( Isa 11:1-4). Here is thewell-known prophecy that Ch,·is/coming from Jesse through D avidwill be the king over all the earthafter His second coming.

Before Jesus' human birth, an angelgave this prophecy concerning His future rule : "He shall be great, and shallbe called the Son of the Highest : andthe Lord God shall give unto him thethrone of his father David : And Heshall reign over the house of Jacobfor ever; and of His kingdom thereshall be no end" (Luke 1:32-33)Christ is go ing to literally reign on thethrone of David. That throne is on thisearth today!

And He shall reign over the house ofJacob, or Israel. These are hwnan beings here on this earth! If you do notunderstand the national identity ofmodern Israel, then write immediatelyfor Mr. Armstrong's fascinat ing freebooklet "The United States and BritishCommonwealth in Propbecv:"

Yes , world government is soo n tocome with Jesus Christ as DivineRULER!

One of the most tremendous eventsin all history is described by the Apostle John in Revelation 11:1 5: "And

the seventh angel sounded; and therewere great voices in heaven, saying,The kingdoms of tbis world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and ofHis Christ; and He shall reign for everand ever."

Christ will show us how to havepeace on this earth! This is the ONLY

way we will ever have peace!

God 's Government OnThis Earth

Having proved that Christ is Kingof God's soon-coming Kingdom, let usnow see where that Kingdom will belocated. Did you notice in the Scripture we just cited that "the kingdomsof tbis world" are to be ruled byChrist?

This is substantiated. in Daniel 2:44.This is the conclusion of Daniel'sprophecy about the four g reat worldruling kingdoms which were to holdsway over the western world. As nearlyall Bible scholars recognize, the fourthgreat kingdom is the Roman Empirewhich- with its various revivals-willhold sway to the end of this age."And in the days of these killgs shallthe God of heaven set up a kingdomwhich shall NEVER be destroyed: andthe kingdom shall not be left to otherpeople , but it shall break in pieces andconsume all these kingdoms, and itshall stand for ever." This clearly indicates that God's Kingdom will beon this earth-Christ the "Stone" having crushed the other kingdo ms and setup God's government to bring peace.

In the descrip tion of that Kingdomgiven in Isaiah II , we also find thatit will be 011 this eartb, "They shallnot hurt nor destroy in all My holymountain (kingdom): for the earthshall be full of the knowledge of theLORD, as the waters cover the sea"(vs . 9) .

You have probably noticed by th istime that the subjects or citizens ofGod 's Kingdom will be physical human beings still left alive on thisearth! Isaiah 11:10 describes Christ asthe "Root of Jesse" and says, "to itshall the Gentiles seek." So here wefind even the Gentile nations are beingruled over by Christ on this earth .N ow continuing in verse 11 : "And itshall come to pass in that day, that the

Th, PLAIN TRUTH

Lord shall set H is hand again thesecond time to recover the remnant ofH is people, which shall be left, fromAssyria, and from Egypt ... and shallassemble the outcasts of Israel, andgather together the dispersed of Judahfrom the four corners of the earth."

Thi s will be the time of the gloriousregathering of the Israelitish peopleincluding many of our deceived friendsand relatives-who will be broughtback from captivity at the second coming of Christ. They will then learn tounderstand and appreciate God's rule,His laws, His government and HisIf/ay of life ! And what a wonderfulworld that will be!

The Laws of God's Kingdom

God alone knows the WAY to peaceand happiness.' He reveals this wayfrom the beginning of Genesis to theend of Revelation. It does not alwaysagree with the way that "seems right"to a man, but it is the way to real peaceon this earth.

Th roughout the propheci es Godshows that His Kingdom will be ruledaccording to this way. That way isbased on His law. N otice Isaiah's inspired description of God's Kingdomand the way it will be administered onth is earth : " And many peop le shall goand say, Come ye, and let us go up tothe mountain of the Lord, to the houseof the God of Jacob; and He will teachus of His Wit )'!, and we will walk inHis paths: for out of Zion shall goforth the LAW, and the word of theLord from Jerusalem" ( Isa. 2:3).

Yes, God's rule is according 10 HisLAW! Th e spiritual principles ofGod's Ten Commandments are the tVayto peace and happiness and everythingthis world really wants. But men arerunning away from that way as fastas they can!

When Christ first comes. He willhave to PUNIS H the nations of theworld to teach them to appreciate thatwa)' and His law.' "And He shalljudge among the nations and shallrebuke many people : and they shallbeat their swords into plowshares, andtheir spears into pruninghooks: andnation shall not lift up sword againstnation, neither shall they learn warany more" (vs. 4) . As King of kings,

7

Christ will have to REBUK E the nationsand liter ally teach them the way topeace and the laws of God which willbring peace.

Th e prophet Micah reveals this samething that is to take place in God'sKingdom : " For the LAW shall go forthof Zion, and the word of the Lordfrom Jerusalem" (Micah 4 :2) .

Many people today are under the[alse impression that the N ew Covenant does away with God's law! However, in describing these very eventswhich are to take place when Christ returns and sets up God's Kingdom, theprophecies reveal that God's law is thevery BASIS of the New Covenant, andof the agreement which is made between Chr ist and physical Israel andwith individual Christians of all nations as they are converted.

" After those days, saith the Lord, Iwill put my L AW in their inwardparts, and write it in their hearts; andI will be their God and they shall bemy people" (Jer.31 :33) .

Man cannot have peace until HU·

MAN N ATURE is changed.' God's lawreveals the very nature and characterof God. After Christ returns to convect all nations, He will write God'slaw in the very minds and hearts ofpeople. Th us, it will become pari oftheir very nature!

Then they will KNOW the way 10

peace!-and j ov l-s-an d HAPPIN ESS !

Jesus Christ H imself revealed thatGod' s law is the very BASIS of HisKingdom .

He said : "The law and the prophetswere until John: since that time theKingdom of God is preached , andevery man presseth into it. And it iseasier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the LAW to fail"( Luke 16: 16. 17). Here we find Jesus'clear statement that the law of God isan integral part of the message of theKingdom of God!

But was Jesus speaking of the law ofthe Ten Commamdments? Yes, Hewas! For He continued in the very nextbreath: "W hosoever putteth away hiswife, and marrieth another, committethadultery" (vs. 18). Here He showedthat the law of which He was speakingincluded the command against divorce

Page 10:  · Wfat-ourREADERS SAY t;h& PlAn~l~~lH o m aao zi n e of undcr$t on d in g NO. 10 N ot Afraid to Speak Up! "Heard your program on the radio and was quite interested in

and remarriage based on the Ten Corn mandments of God.

That law is BINDING on us today! If we plan to be in God's Kingdoma part of His government forever-wehad better learn to keep and OBEY

God's law here and now in this life !

How to Qu alify for God'sKingdom

To help us understand this principleof OBEDIENCE.. let us turn to the verybegin ning of Jesus Christ's min istryand what He actually taught when Hewas here on this earth. When He wastempted by the Devil, He stated one ofthe most basic truths of all the ages:"Man shall not live by bread alone, butby EVERY WORD that proceedeth out ofthe mouth of God" (Matt. 4 :4) .

Remember that the only writtenword of God at the time that Jesus saidthis was the OLD Testament! This isthe Word that contains the law ofGod-the law which so many ministersseem to H AT E today! Yet, Jesus saidthat we are to LIVE by this inspiredWord!

After His temptation by Satan, Jesusbegan to preach the message of God'sGovernment. "From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: forthe Kingdom of heaven is at hand"(vs. 17) . Again notice that it was elwa)'s the message of God's Kingdomor gover111ne111- which Christ preached. He showed that men must REPENT oftheir ways and submit to that gove rnment.

The following three chapters in Matthew contain what is popularly called"The Sermon on the Mount." Fewseem to realize it, but this entiresermon is fi lled with Jesus' exhortationto OBEY God'J law !

Notice Matthew 5: 17-19: "Thinknot that I am come to destroy thelaw, or the prophets : I am not cometo destroy, but to fulfill"-that is todo or PERFORM, sefJing m an example."For verily I say unto you," Jesuscontinued, "till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wisepass from the law, till all be fulfilled"-or be in effect, as the originalGreek indicates.

Then Jesus concludes: "Whosoever

The PLAIN TRUTH

therefore SHALL"-notice this is [uturetense-"brcak one of these least commendmentr '-s-no matter which menmight call the least- "and shall teachmen so, he shall be called the least inthe Kingdom of heaven: but whosoever sball DO and TEACH them, thesame shall be called great in the Kingdom of heaven."

Jesus said that as long as heaven andearth stand, God's law will NEVER bedone away! And those who are to berewarded in God's Kingdom shall bothdo and leach even the "least" of God'slaws and commandments!

W HY HAVEN'T YOU HEARD THISKIND OF PREACHING?

A young man came to Christ asking:"Good Master, what good thing shall Ido that I may have eternal life?" Herewas Jesus' golden opportunity to tellhim- as modern ministers would putit-that there is NOTHING he had todo,

"Just believe," they say, "and youwill be saved." "Give your hand toyour preacher and your heart to theLord" seems to be the modern methodof salvation.

But what did [esos say on this occasion? fie said, "If you wiII enter intolife, keep the commandments." Andwhen the young man asked which commandments, Jesus began to state someof the Ten Commandments ( Matt.19:16-19) . Here is the WAY to eternallife as taught by Jesus Christ the Sonof God! W ill we believe HIM'

Is This the ONLY TrueGospel ?

Is this message of obedience to God'slaws and preparation for His comingKingdom-or world-ruling government-the ONLY way of salvation? Wasn'tsome of this message just for the Jewsof Jesus' day? Was there some OTHERgospel introduced for Gentile Christians?

Here is what Jesus Christ com

manded after His resurrection from thedead! "Go ye therefore, and teach allnations, baptizing them in the name ofthe Father, and of the Son, and of theHoly Spirit : teaching them to observeALL things iobatsoeoer I have commanded YOII: and 10, I am with you al-

October, 1964

ways, even unto the end of the world"(Matt. 28:19-20). Here Christ commanded His apostles to go to all theworld and preach exactly the SAMEmessage of obedience to God's K ingdom and laws that He had taughtthem!

We must RFPENT of our ways andsins, accept Christ as Saviour andRULER, and begin to let Him- throughHis Spirit-live a life of obedience inus to prepare us for eternal life inGod's Kingdom and to be BORN as amember of His very family! Th is is theVERY gospel you must believe andobe)' in order to be saved!

Jesus told His apostles: "Go ye intoall the world, and preach the gospel toevery creature. He that believeth and isbaptized shall be saved; but he thatbelieveth not shall be damned" (Mark16:15- 16).

You must BE LIEVE the joyous message of God's soon-coming governmentto bring peace through His ways, andHis LAW! And you should prepare foryour part in that Kingdom hefe andnow.

Wh at should you do, then ?

Showing the way to begin this life ofobedience and surrender to God, Petersaid: "Repent, and be baptized everyone of you in the name of Jesus Christfor the remission of sins, and you shallreceive the gift of the Holy Spirit"(Acts 2:38) .

You must repent of SIN. And Godtells you in I John 3 :4: "Sin is thetransgression of the law." The Biblesays that sin is breaking God's Jaw!

You must REPENT of this-and ofyour entire attitude of disobedience andhostility toward God's rule and authority over your life. You should becomehumble, as a little child, and let Godguide you and teach you day-by-daythrough His Word. You should bebaptized-as an outward symbol ofyour willingness to bllry your old selfunder the water, and to give your lifeliterally to God to use as He sees fit.

Then God PROMISES to give you ofHis precious Holy Spirit. Thi s is Hisvery nature, His life, and His characterwhich He places in His begotten sons.

Notice that even the Holy Spirit is

INSIDE RUSSIA TODAYHere, wriHen from behind the Iron Curtain, is the secondinstallment of an on-the-spot report on Soviet Communism! This summer we sent Mr. Eugene Walter to the Soviet Unionfor a first-hand report . Here revealed is the shocking story ofmismanage ment in agriculture and industry--and the truth

about Communist education and the Soviet police state!

Leningrad, U.S.S.R.

I N ONE of m)' f irst few days inRussia, a young Communist toldme about the wonderful idea that

Conununism is. How marvelous tothink of a society where there would bepeace and plenty for all ! The idea isTERRIFIC! There is just one problemwith it, however, he informed me.

"What's that?" I asked."Making it work," he answered.Thinking he was being sarcastic, I

laughed. But to my embarrassment, hewas DEAD SERIOUS!

Make Communism Work?

Again and again I was soberly toldthis same thing: "Th e idea behindCommunism is greaJ. The problem is

by Eugene Wa lter

finding a way to make it work.ItOnce a person really becomes sold on

this idea and wants to have an activepart in bringing this Communist Utopia about, it enables him to overlook alot of flaws in the system.

One evening in Rostov, a well dressed middle-aged man heard mespeak English and asked to talk to me.I invited him up to my room, andafter he asked that I lork the door,we sat down and had a pleasant discussion. He was an educated man, spoke flawless English, was an engineer, and had been a Party member fortwenty years. He also was an unusuallysincere and open-minded man.

He, too, told me that he agreed 100

per cent with the idea of Communism, but that the problem was to get it towork successfully. He acknowledgedthat at the present the U. S. has ahigher standard of living than theU.S.S.R., but said he firmly believedthat in the long run, the U. S. woulddo better with Communism, too.

He readily acknowledged that thereare many large, gaping flaws in thepresent administration of Communism, but felt that these were inevitable intrying to perfect the system. He saidthat as long as the leaders were sincerely trying to convert the idea ofCommunism into a realiJy, he owedthem hi, support.

This man even went so far as to ad-

mit that he him" If was influenced bythe Party propaganda! "But then," headded. "remember that you and yourpeople are also influenced by the propaganda of )'Ollr government."

"I believe that the basic idea behindCommunism-equal distribution of thenation's wealth- is wonderful," he con

tinued. "W hether or not this system isright, and whether or not we as ana·tion can successfully bring it about, only time can tell . It may be that we3CC wrong- that we will fail. It may bethat one of the many religions that youhave in your nation will be right andwill have a better answer than we."

And then , looking me in the eye, hesoberly concluded, "W ho knows ? Maybe the God that YOU believe in isright ? Maybe everything will work outaccording to the way of YOUR religion."

Little did he realize the tmtb of whathe was saying!

Life on the Farm

The problem down on the farm isone of the most tender of all theSoviet Union's sore spots. I want to tellyou about it.

Today's problem has its roots in thedays of Stalin who cared little for agriculture. Stalin collectivized the Sovietfarms by stripping the kulaks-thewealthier peasants and the best farmers---of all their resources. Many resistedso forcibly that they slaughtered theirlives tock and burned their crops ratherthan surrender them to the State.

Th is action, coupled with the terrible drought of 1930, brough t unbelievable misery and suffering. Almosthalf the nation's cattle-more thanthirty million head- were destroyed! Two tbirds of the nation' s 150 millionsheep and goats were lost, together withhalf of its sixty million pigs andhorses ! More than a decade later theSoviet Un ion still hadn't recoveredfrom this loss. In 1940 there was lesslivestock of all types than before collectivization began in 1928 !

W orld W ar II caused yet a fur therlivestock decline. At the time of Stalin's death in 1953, there were threeand one-half million [ewer cattle thaneven in 1940!

Since 1953, over-all farm productionhas gone up some sixty per cent. But

The PLAIN TRUTH

remember that 1953 was at an extremely low level, and that most of thisproduction increase was achieved by1958 when Russia harvested the firs tand probably the IOJI-big bumpercrop from the mill ions of acres of virgin land which Kh rushchev orderedplowed up in Kazakhstan several yearsbefore. These new virgin lands addedthi rty per cent to the total number ofacres under cultivation .

Since 1958. however, farm production has barely kept up with the population increase. Th ese same virgin lands- true to the unheeded advice givenKhrushchev by his colleagues-are fastlos ing their productivity and becominga dust bowl.

Wi th upset weather condit ions aconstant plague, and with no remainingnew lands to plow up, Mr. Khrushchevis in trouble.

The False Messiah ofAgriculture

In spite of all the dark spots, Russia's Communist bosses are optimisticabout the future of Soviet agriculture. They have found a saviour, they think ,to help them out of all their difficulties. Th at saviour is chemical ag,.iwlture,

In a dire effo rt to combat the deep.ening agricultural crisis, mill ions ofrubles are being diverted from otherprojects and pumped into research andthe production of chemical fertilizers .Little do they realize the problem theyare creating! ( W rite for our article on"The T ruth about Chemical Farming." )

But in their mad effort to show thatthey are entirely self-s uff icient, theRussians have gone even one step further than just mere chemical fertilizing .In a State farm I visited near Kiev ,tomatoes and cucumbers were beinggrown in a "soil" made of chippedgranite and fed by a carefully formu lated chemical solution- all in a hothouse !

You can imagine what the producetasted like ! If the tastelessness was anindication of the food value, there waslittle point in eating these vegetables.Yet th is method of food productioncalled "hydropon ics"- is being widelyha iled as the solution to the food problem. N o stone is being left unturned

October, 1964

10 finding more chemica l solutionswhich will make it possible to growother food plants by this method.

Th e farm I visited contained fift eenacres of hydroponic hothouses, andthese and other local hyd roponic hot house farms supplied the entire ( il l ofKiev with tomatoes and cucumbers during the winter months. Similar farmsare in a number of other northern citiesand many more are being planned .

However, even this method is notfoolproof. When I questioned thefarm manager about why the ir production schedule showed they hadn't comeanytobere near their quota for the pastthree months, he said it was because ofthe cloudy weather . Hydroponic or not,the plants stiil must have sunshine lTh is the Russian chemists were unableto supp ly.

How simple it would be to turn toGod, to obey His Laws, and to beblessed with abundant rain in theproper season and bounteous harvestsprovid ing suff icient food for all. Butthe U.S.S.R., as have all nations, hasturned her back on God , and is stubbornly trying to show she doesn't needGod-attempting every fantastic, farfetched scheme imaginable. She is onlybringing unto ld miseries and curses onherself. But this isn't all!

The Problem of the Peasant

Perhaps as big a prob lem as any inSoviet agriculture is the average Russianpeasant !

Few observers are really acquaintedwith this aspect of Russia's farm problem. Let me again quote from Edward Crank shaw's vivid descriptio n inhis Kbrmbrbet/s RIIJJia: "The peasants still form a vast. dark mass, distorting the whole economy . . . livingout their lives in overcrowded squalorand. in their hordes, almost obl iterating from sight the grandiose materialachievem ent s scattered so thinly overthe vast land" (p. 32) .

"Over recent years," reports Mr.Crankshaw, "the Soviet Press has carried hundreds of accounts of what goeson when the peasants, released from thesubsistence existence of the Stalin era, kick over the traces and use their traditional feast days in the traditionalway as an excuse for prolonged drinking bouts-cattle go hungry and unmilked , hens go off lay, the harvestblackens in the fields, and the grain isspilled, as one and all, from farm manager and Party members downwards, join in the orgies which give somesort of colour to their lives" (p. 132) .

This is the star)' of the Russianpeasant. But for all his shor tcomings hestill is most important to Soviet agriculture. While he probably hales hisforced work on the collective and statefarms, and is a constant headache to thegovernment, he 101.'eJ his little privateplot-no larger than three acreswhich he is allowed to have for himself. Each peasant is a little capitaliston his private plot.

How milch he loves it and WHY thegovernment is almost [arced to let himhave it is shown by these facts:"Though their tilled area amounted toonly 3.2 per cent of the total in 1961,the small plots produced eighty-oneper cent of the nation's eggs, sixty percent of the potatoes and forty per centof the meat" (Life, Sept. 11, 1963, p.58) .

Such statistics must leave the Communist planners absolutely jrJlJlra/ed!

T he Party, the People, andthe Government

If, because of the cold war, theAmerican visitor expects to find the individual Russian citizens hostile to him,he will be quite mistaken. To his surprise he will find only very fri endlypeople, intensely curious about him andhis country. However, only very jewdespite all the talk about it-will beable to speak English.

He will f ind peop le who want desperately to be admired and accepted bythe rest of the world-constantly fish ing for compliments, almost in a childlike way-just )'earning for you to saysomething good about their countryand its achievements. Their personaland national pride, however, will not

The PLAIN TRUTH

permit them to give )'011 a complimentor to acknowledge-no matter howob t1io/IJ-that )'011" country has achieveel greater success in some field thantheirs.

These individuals-220 million ofthem- are the Russian people. Of thisnumber only some ten million are members of the Communist Party.

The Communist Party dominates thecountry's politica l life from top to bottom-but it is NOT trying to gain alarge membership. Instead, the Party ispurposely trying to limit the number ofmembers by setting "ery high qualifications for membership.

The candidate for membership mustbe at least twenty-eigh t years old, havean outstanding record of leadershipand dedication during his earlier yearsin the Young Communist League, berecommended by at least three membersin good standing, and most importantof all, be willing to spend considerabletime in meetings and other time-consuming activities.

Many who by this time have familie sand jobs with both husband and wifeworking, simply do not desire to expend the time and effort necessary tobe a Party member. This includes manywho hold high and responsible positions in industry, education and governm ent. Thus the Party membership iscarefully screened and only those whohave proved themselves to be dedicatedare admitted.

Even so, there is a large variation inthe quality of the members. Most aremembers because they sincerely believethat Communism is the answer to having peace and plenty for all, and theywish to be a part in bringing thisutop ia about. They are all for the ideaof universal prosperity. However, notmore than a handflll are Party zealots inthe traditional sense, and ver)' fewwould be willing to give their livesjust for the princip les and ideals of theParty.

For the aggressive, however, Partymembership is the first step to any realindividual power later on. How fastand far an individual member moves upthe pyramid of power is largely determined by his ability, hard work, popularity with Party members and suoperiors, and by his skillful maneuver-

13

ing . Most never get off the f irst level. Some, however, who discover quicklyhow to me the system, move up rapidlyfrom the local to the regional andfinally-c-on the national level-to theCentral Committee.

From this Centra l Committee are selected the dozen or so who compose thePresidium-the real power center ofthe Soviet Un ion . And at the top ofthe pyramid, ruling over the Presidium,is the top man in the Party, the FirstSecretary - today Ni kita Khrushchev. The Presidium, and especially its FirstSecretary, makes policy for both theParty and the Government which, strictly speaking, are two separate organizations.

Although similar in structure, thegovernment is merely the puppet of theParty, has no real power, and its function is simply to carry out the policiesthe Party dictates .

Some government off ices are "elected" by the l4 0 mill ion voters, but thiselection is a farce. There is often onlyone candidate on the ballot-the onethe Party wants- and the voter votes"yes" or "no." "N o" votes are veryrare. If there is more than one nameon the ballot , the Party lets it beknown who the preferred candidate is,and he is inevitably elected. Th us noposition in the government, includingthe Presidency of the U.S.S.R., is reallypowerful, and the government is-merelya pawn used to administer Party-proposed measures. Both it and the peopleare run by the Communist Party.

But just because only one out oftwenty-two are Communist Party mem bers, does this mean that the Russianpeop le do not support the Party- thatthe Communist regime is about totopple ?

NOT AT ALL !

In three weeks of travel, interviewing and visiting with Russians from allwalks of life, I found but one groupwhich was not completely behind theParty-a group of Russian-style delinquents in Moscow, rebellious trouble-makers who would be a detrimentto any society,

All otber groups SUPPORT the principles of the Party. Individuals, ofcourse, might not.

Yet most of those with whom I spoke

Page 16:  · Wfat-ourREADERS SAY t;h& PlAn~l~~lH o m aao zi n e of undcr$t on d in g NO. 10 N ot Afraid to Speak Up! "Heard your program on the radio and was quite interested in

were NOT Party members!Did they give carefully worded an

swers? Did one get the feeling theywere telling what they knew or feltthey should tell instead of the way theyREALLY felt way down deep in theirhearts and minds?

NO !In fact, the deep personal conorcuon

and the emotional feelillg they expressedwas one of the outstanding impressionsI received on the entire tour.

To the American visitor, eating hisheavy, uninteresting meals, watching theRussian women do heavy physical laborand seeing the outrageously high pricesin the shops, this seems incredible.

WHY support a system like this?Surely ANYONE could see that this isNOT the way to live-that Communismis riddled with weakneJSeJ.

But while this is certainly true, Communism also has its pillat'J of strengtb. In searching to understand WHY Communism has such strong backing fromthe Russian peoples, I found there areat least seven hasic reasons,

1) The Influence ofCommunistic Education

Often we fail to t'eally gfaJp thePOWER there is in the control of a nation's minds . Too often we fail to realize that each individual one of us isthe product of our environment-thatwe were born knowing nothing andthat the knowledge and convictions wehave today have all been acquired sincebirth. That further, most of this knowledge has been funnelled unquesticningly into our heads.

In the Western world, we are taughtto accept a more or less democraticsystem as the standard. In Russia, how ever, the people are taught to acceptCommunism as the standard and theideal. This teaching has been going onsince the Revolution of 1917 whichestablished Communism in Russia. Thefact that most Russians living todayhave been born SINCE the Revolutionmeans that MOST RUSSIANS have hadCommunism drummed into their headsfrom earliest childhood and know notbing but the Communist system.

A popular church in the Westernworld claims that if it can educate achild in its religion for the first six or

The PLAIN TRUTH

seven years of his life, he will remainfaithful to it as long as he lives. In Russia, a whole generation has been educated to the Communist "religion."It may be a system based on lies anddeceit, but as Hitler said, "Tell a bigenough lie often enough , and soon everyone will believe it." This is exactlywhat has happened in Russia.

Unless through unusual circumstances they have been abroad, mostRussians cannot even faintly begin toconceive of what life is like in a non~

Communist country. They simply have110 basis whatever for comparison, andsincerely feel that THEIR way of doingthings is right. This control of thenation's education-which is really thecontrol of the nation's minds-is aprimary stronghold of the Communistsystem.

One of the most important reasonsthat the Russians support Cocrununismis that they have been EDUCATED toJ/lPPOft it.

2) Life Appears to beGetting Better

The second reason the Russian people stand behind Communism is thatit is slowly bringing them a "betterlife" in the way of material goods. While by Western standards these improvements are painfully slow in coming, it must be remembered that mostRussians have never been outside theSoviet Union . There is no comparisonthey can make except with themselves.

A Russian family might look at itthis way: "Ten years ago we had virtually nothing except the clothes on ourbacks and a miserable apartment sharedwith another family. Five years ago wewere able to purchase a radio, someextra clothes and a few knick-knacks forour room. Two years ago we were privileged to move into a new apartment atwhich time we bought new furnitureand a television set. With the shopscontaining more consumer goods thanever before, who knows what the future may bring? More electrical appliances? nicer clothes ?-and in the distant future, perhaps even a car?"

This line of reasoning is exactly theway the government WANTS 'the peopleto think . By holding out the promiseof a better life , like the proverbial

October, 1964

bunch of hay tied on a stick and heldjust in front of the horse's mouth, sothe Communist Party teases the Russianpeople along by giving them justenough goods to make them think that"the better life" is just around thecorner.

With the goods and services theyhave waited a lifetime to receive justin sight, the people aren't about torebel at this point and foolishly risklosing it all. Even if some of thesethings don't materialize as expected, most Russians are enjoying their limitedlife too much as it now is to want torock the boat.

When improvements do come, theParty, of course, takes all the credit forhaving brought them about . The truthis that the improvements came in spiteof the Party rather than because of it.But, nevertheless, the fact remains thatsome improvements have come. As longas they continue to keep coming-andas long as the Party continues to delude the people that Communism isbringing these improvements aboutthe people will continue to give thegovernment their support.

3) The Narure of the RussianPeople

The nature of the Russian people isanother major reason why Communismgained such a strong foothold there. The Russian people are very friend lyand have many admirable national char acteristics. But as all peoples, they alsohave their characteristic national weaknesses. Unfortunately, these weaknesseshave fitted the Communistic system almost perfectly.

One of the greatest of these weaknesses is that the Russian people arevery prone to use falsehoods and deceit.Yet ironically, they themselves are almost childlike in their gullibility whenit comes to being deceived . Only a Russian can look you squarely in the eyeand tell you something that he knowsis a lie, that yOIl know is a lie, and thathe knows that YOU know is a lie, andSTILL expect you to believe it! I encountered many examples of this.

Once, while travelling in the Georgian Republic, our guide told us that theGeorgians live to the oldest age of any

Page 17:  · Wfat-ourREADERS SAY t;h& PlAn~l~~lH o m aao zi n e of undcr$t on d in g NO. 10 N ot Afraid to Speak Up! "Heard your program on the radio and was quite interested in

people on earth. Most, she said, live toat least 150 years! And she really EX

PECTED us to believe it!As this illustrates, sometimes the

falsehoods they try to palm off are soc1wnsy and obvious that it's almostfunny. Perhaps it is because they themselves fall victim to deception so easilythat they expect you to . With the average person so gullible it is not difficult to see how and why such an openlyfraudulent and diabolical system asCommunism met its first real success inRussia.

This susceptibility to deception as acharacteristic of the Russian people isnot just my personal opinion. Manyreputable and well-known reporters, such as John Gunther for example, report this same characteristic. But evenmore authoritatively, the Bible bears outthis same fact.

Prophetically speaking, Meshech, Tubal, Gog and Magog refer to Russia andthe Mongol ian peoples . In Revelation20 :8-10 God uses Gog and Magog asa symbolic type of those who easily andwillingly give themselves over to deception.

But this isn't the only characteristicthe Russian people have which is anasset to Communism.

This quote from Kbmsbcbei/s RIIJsi« (pp. 70, 71) points out anothersurprise: "Most Russians, in spite ofthe hot denials of refugees and 'defectors,' have a deep hankering after astern, remote father-figure, standing

The PLAIN THUrn

h igh above the hurl y-burly of ordinarylife . If he is terrible and cruel they willstill respect him even as they hate him,as witness the ambivalence of their feelings about Stalin : Stalin may have beenthe most terrible man-eater in theworld; but at least he was 0"" maneater! .. . The recital of Stalin's crimes[by Khrushchev] against his one-timecolleagues and subordinates they [ theRussian people) took more or less intheir stride: of course we all knew thatterrible things were going on; but nevertheless, he was a great and strongman, and we need a great man ! If Ihave been told that once by a youngeomsomol [member of the YoungCommunist League] I have been toldit twenty times."

Astounding ? Yes !- but also T RU E !

Yet another national characteristicthat has helped Communism is that theRussians are a fiercely proud peopleproud especially of thei r ability to denythemselves and to suffer privation andhards hip . WHAT could be more perfectfor Communism?!

Few peoples would have enduredwhat the Russians did under Stalin inthe 30's. Yet the Russians not only endured it, but almost g ive the impression now that they liked enduring it!

It has been said that every peoplehas the form of government they deserve. The fad that Communism JO wellfits the Rnssian natnve is certainly abig reason why the Russian peop legenerally support it.

t5

4) People Don't Wan t roChange

While the desire to maintain thestatus quo is not a peculiarly Russiencharacteristic, it is an important reasonwhy the Russians support Communism. As long as people who have never hadmuch, have a roof over their heads, food in their stomachs, a steady job,and a few conveniences, most will becontent. Today the Russians have thesethings.

People always want to have more, itis true. But when the price to get moreinvolves a shake-up of their entire wayof life-of getting out of their individual "rut"- most are simply not willingto pay the price.

In Russia today, as already explained, most people ARE getting more. Further, they have become used to doing thingsthe Communist way. They feel at homein it, and they are now in a positionwhere they can see themselves advancing to higher positions in the futureby means of the Communist system.

A radical change in the present Communist order would upset all this andleave the peop le f rightened and insecure. Even though a drastic change tosome other form of government mightbring them more and do it moreql/ickly, most would oppose such achange. It would be too risky and thestrangeness of the new system-theFEAR OF THE UNKNOWN- would betoo great. "Life is not too bad underCommunism. Let's not risk our chancesfor a better life in the future by tryingsome new-fangled system now," mostwould reason.

This desire to maintain the statusquo extends to both extremes of Sovietsociety-from the common workingman to the high government officialwho would have more to lose by achange . No matter what their position, most would oppose sweeping changesin their personal, individual lives. InRussia, this means that most peopledon't want a change in the present, established Communist form of government.

5) Fear to Rebel

Although there are a number ofvO/lin/ar)' reasons why the Russianssupport Communism, we must never

Page 18:  · Wfat-ourREADERS SAY t;h& PlAn~l~~lH o m aao zi n e of undcr$t on d in g NO. 10 N ot Afraid to Speak Up! "Heard your program on the radio and was quite interested in

16

forget that the fear not to support it isstill VERY REAL. The Communists arein power and everyone knows that theyintend to Ita)' tha I way.

The overt terror of the days of Stalinis gone. In those days everyone lived ina state of fear bordering on hysteria. And small wonder. Secret Service menwould walk through the streets knocking on doors and picking up peopleAT RAN DOM in order to fill the quotafor the slave labor camps.

Those with ability had special reasonto fear. Stalin regarded anyone with in telligence or ability as a threat to hisposition and had him killed. Hun dreds of thousands of Russia's mostable men were killed in the flower oftheir lives. Consequently, the nationlost a whole generation of leaders, andthe 'positions they should have filledwere taken instead by third and fourthraters-often litera//y morons and id iots-who knew just enough to repeatthe trite phrases and to bow and scrapeat the right time to save their lives.

Today there are no such purges, anddevelopment of ability and the intellectis encouraged. But the memory stilllingers, and the public has a healthy respect for their Communist masterswhom they know to be perfectly capable of launching a new offensiveagainst any disloyal element if provoked to do so. Let me cite an example to show how much a general airof suspicion and mistrust still prevails.

One evening two members of mygroup desired to attend a public meeting. So, accompanied by an Intouristguide, they hopped into a taxi and wentto the address they had been given. Unfortunately, the address was that of thecaretaker of the building where themeeting was to be held, rather than thatof the building itself. Not knowingthis, however, they went to this address and knocked on the door. Thecaretaker answered, and after explaining the situation to them, invited themto come in for a visit. They acceptedthe invitation and were engaged inpleasant conversation when suddenlythere carne an ominous knock on thedoor-and there stood the police! Intourist guide and all, they were hauledoff to the nearest police station. Severalhours later, after the authorities had

The PLAIN TRUTH

been satisfied that everything was onthe up and up, they were released without any real problem.

Only the taxi driver saw them go tothis address and he felt it suspiciousenough to warrant reporting!

This incident illustrates the extent towhich mistrust is still present. Everyperson is a committee of one to spyon everyone e1se-a self-appointed police agent who feels it his obligationto report the slightest thing that lookssuspicious to him.

This fear of immediate and severereprisal for anything that could evenvaguely be construed as being suspicious or anti-Communist, is a most importen t reason why the Russian peoplesupport Communism: They are AFRAID

not to support it.

6) Belief that Communism IsTheir Only Hope for Peace

When we hear Khrushchev rant andrave about the aggression of the UnitedStates as opposed to his own pure andlily-white intentions, we are inclined tobe amused by the sheer ridiculousnessof his claims.

But the Russian people aren'tamused!

T HEY BELIEVE IT !The fear of fo reign encroachment IS

continually played up by the Sovietleaders as a reason why the Russianpeople must raIly around Communism.Getting the people to believe that theWestern "Imperialists" are an everpresent threat to world peace and security, and that the Communists, on theother hand, are striving only for peace,is one of the POWERHOUSES of theRegime-and eIpecially of Kbnabcbeopersonally.

One question I could always dependon to produce a lively response was" Do you feel that the United States isaggressive in its foreign policy?" Thisquestion would drop like a bombshell!

Of cOII"e the United States is aggressive, I would be told. W itness Berlin, Cuba, and Laos, for example!

But what was continuaIly cited as thegrealeJI example of U. S. aggression ?

" You HAVE RE -ARMED GER-M ANY !"

The Russian people have a real FEAR

of Germany. In each city I visited

October, 1964

which the Germans had entered duringWorld War II, the history of the Naziatrocities was feelingly related to me.

As part of their program to get theRussian people to believe they mustrally together around Communism orelse hang separately, the Communistswant to keep the flame of this fear ofGermany alive. But one can read between the lines that all is not justpropaganda. One senses that this fearis very REAL - that Khfluh,he v himJe' f is VERY CONCERNED about what isgo ing on in Germany. The averageRussian KNOWS that there are an increasing number of former N azis inhigh positions in Germany today. Farmore than the average American,Khrushchev has a realistic appraisal ofwhat this means and what it can leadto.

By playing up these threats to theirsecurity-some real and some imagined-the Communists have hit upon oneof their strongest points. Support Communism and you join the struggle forworld peace, the people are told. Oppose it, and you bring about your owndestruction.

N ever has a warlike nation been so"peace conscious." Everywhere are post.ers and signs with the one word"peace" written on it in seven or eightlanguages. Every visit to a factory, aschool, a museum or anything else con-

7) N ation al Sense of Pu rpose

T he last, but not the least, of thebasic reasons why the Russian peop lesupport Commun ism, is that Communism has given the Soviet peoples a

national sense of purpose. It has madethe individual citizen feel that he, personally. can have a part in {bangingthis world and maki ng it a better placein which to live. It has given the Soviet Un ion a national goal.

to bring about world peace than anyman who has ever lived ."

What a thorough job o( bra inwashing !

How do you square th is withKhru shchev's statem ent that he will" bury us," I would ask ?

Well, fi rst of all, very few Russianshad ever heard that Khrushchev madethis statement, just as few have heardof his "s hoe thumping" display at theU.N. or similar incidents. W hen I didfinally persuade one Russian that itwas, indeed, a histor ical fact that Mr .Khrushchev had made this stateme nt ,she shot back this answer :

" Y ou didn 't really take that literally, did you ? Premier Kh rushchevwould never do such a th ing except asa last resort. He was just speaki ng ofthe fact that Communism with its dynamic growth is going to bury the decaying democratic system economicallyand idealogically by the sheer weight ofthe inherent super iority of the system.Th at's all Comrade Khrushchev mean t !- and don' t you agree that it is [nevitable that thi s will happen ?"

The poor deceived fellow- he oughtto know better!

Far from " inevitable success," Commun ism is torn by division. Red Chinais cha lleng ing Kh rushchev's authority.

In Leningr ad I had the privilege ofvisiting with a Swiss dipl omat who justcame from Red Chi na all the wayacross Mongol ia and Siberia to Leningrad by train. He spent th ree weeks inRed China , and for reasons unk nowneven to himsel f, he was treated royally, being taken to all the major cities andbeing shown places that have beenclosed to foreigners-especially W esterners-for years.

He reported that Chinese ha tred forthe Russians is very open . He said thatif there was one word which describesChina, it is "sad ." T he Chinese Communists are very strict and serious, andthey are open ly scornful of the " liberal" policies of the Russian Communists.

Incidentally, th is diplomat also reported that-at least for the immediatepresent- the famine in Red China haseased and there is no widesprea d hunger. The Chi nese say that this is be-

But always thetheme is the same: work harder andproduce more for "the glor ious causeof Communism."

In order to stimulate increased pro·duction, the Russians have concoctedsome rather unusual incentives. In thelarge plants and in the town squareslooking like a rogues' gallery to the uninitiated foreigner-are long rows ofpictures. What have the individualswhose pictures appear done to meritthis honor? They are the local "g loriousheroes of Soviet Labor"- workers whohave exceeded their production schedule!

It is paradoxical, however, and oneof the many contradictions, that withall this production consciousness, thereare so many people working at jobswhich appear to have been created justto provide employment.

Whar WILL the Ou tcome Be?

W e have just seen seven basic reasonswhy the Russian people are in back oftheir government. But is this confidence well-placed? Is the support ofthis form of government going to bringthe Russian people what they reall)'want from life? \Vill· Communism beable to produce the food and goods itpromises its people?

Will the plans of the Communistleaders to bring about a world-wideCommunist Utopia without a majoru 'ar come to fruition ? Or will theCommunists launch an all-out, fullscale military attack on the U. S. and\Vestern Europe?

You need to know!

Write today for the article "WillRussia Attack the United States?" andthe booklet, 1975 ill Prophecy. Bothare absolutely free. They will make thefuture of Communist Russia-and ofthe U. S. and Western Europe-plainto you, exactly as revealed by God Almighty in the Bible. Also r"<juest ourrelated article on "The Coming Uto-pia." It, too, is free. •

While sloga ns vied for delegates'and spectators' atten tion out side, snappy and patr iotic catch-p hrases echoedfrom partially filled bleachers insidethe giga ntic Cow Palace dome. Not tobe outd one, Democrats in Atlantic Citya month later filled Convention Halland the news media with glamorousplatitudes and party mottos.

But are slogans and catch-phrases theanswer to America 's problems? ?

Will lofty platitudes, clever limericks, or even patriotic political platforms solve the skyrocketing crimewave, obliterate our sickening poverty, end race hatred (and the Harlem,Rochester and Jersey City riots whichcame between Conven tions) , and, per·haps most important, remove the shadow of the bomb ???

Obviously, NO! !

Un/orl/mate'>. a convention does reosemble a circus show, due to the cavorting shenanigans of delegates andspectators alike. Here is what I S3 W

at the Cow Palace tbat perhaps yourtelevision set did not show.

Loud, blaring speakers, bandwagonsof pep-club gi rls sing ing and sh rieking, pesky souvenir hunters and smallarmies of police-all surround the convention hall. Snakel ike lines of peoplejam doorways-some trying to enter theCow Palace, others demonstrating.Bright buttons and varicolored flagscover vendors' stands l ike barnacles . Allthis coup led with the thri ll-seekinglooks on people's faces makes youthink, "This is entertainment, NOT

serious business!"On ce through the first gate, you run

a gauntlet of tracts and handbi lls. Youthread your way past the pickets protesting their lack of civil righ ts. Dignitaries jostle their way through theshoving mob, accompan ied by spectatorblasts on trumpets and fogho rns.

Inside the Palace proper you wonder,"How many really do care?" Millingcrowds in the corridors patronize concession stands during the official proceedings. Empty seats stare at speakersthroughout the better part of the proceedings, and audien ce attention fa llsfar short of sports-fan concentration, orthe rapt stares that old Sunday TV reruns command . Possibly one news reoporter was correct when he commentedthat many delegates preferred being"under ice" rather than under scrutinyin the Cow Palace after Sunday night'sdrinking "bash."

Convention Results

All this does not mean that notbingwas accomplished. Far from it! Six million dollars were spent directly orindirectly as a result of the San Francisco Convention! But more important.a slarlling change has occurred inAmerican politics. Ult ra-conservativeBarry Goldwater now represents the"mainstream" of Republicanism. alongwith his hopeful runn ing mate. Congressman W illiam Miller. Meanwhile, the Scranton.Rorkefe ller·Romney.Lodgeelement of "moderates" are hastily revamping their ideas, platfo rms, theirconstituencies, and, in some cases, possibly even chang ing parties.

That is not all.

President Johnson now emerges asthe true leader of the Democrats, andno longer depends solely on the convenient "Kennedy-image." Th e Democrats have been forced to undergo anunprecedented switch : they now represent the part}' of "norma lcy," of "mod eration" and of resistance / 0 change.

Senator Goldwate r faces an uphillfight. But his strategy reaches far beyond 1964, He has 1968 to look forward to as well.

Gigantic Prob lems

Senator Goldwater deserves credit,no matter how the election goes, foropenly and publicly calling America'sattention ( in his nomination-acceptancespeech) to our most pressing problems-vice, crime, graft, and internationalill will.

In his dramatic acceptance speechJuly 16, 1964 at San Francisco-c-Senator Goldwater laid bare America'spressing prob lems:

"Tonight there is violence in thestreets, corruption in our highest offices, aimlessness amongst our youth, anxiety among our elders.

"And, where examples of moralityshould be set, THE O PPOS ITE is seen.Small men, seeking great wealth orpower, have too often and too longturned even the highest levels of publicservice into mere personal opportlmi/),.

Th en he summarized -pinpointedthe "end of these things"-just wheresuch criminality is leading : " Historyshows us, it demonstrates that nothing- nothing- prepares the way for tyranny more than the failure of public oificials to keep the streets safe frombullies and marauders" ( U. S. News

Perhaps the Senator heard of, as Idid, the civil rights demonstration(played down or ignored by the press)in dignified San Francisco ? Perhapsour political leaders are aware of thesqualor and filth of our tenement districts ? Perhaps they are appalled by theco-educational pajama parties, and the"yard parties" (boy and girl have onlyone yard of doth to dress in) cominginto vogue at leading universities?Perhaps they are sickened, as we are, that tiny nations like Cuba and Panama

How Would Jesus Votefor PRESIDENT?

Christ's Message was concerned with the government ofnations. Christians are those who follow Christ. Here's what

He would do .

Wid. Wotfd ,lIoto

Jesus' message was about governmentl But today's religious and political figuresknow almost nothing of the kind of government Jesus representedl In this photoEvangelist Billy Graham and President Johnson share a [oke about today's world.

TH E PRESIDENTIAL campaign is on

full blast. The issue of survivalof the nation will fall squarely

on the shoulders of the next President.World war threatens to explode in

Cyprus and Southeast Asia. Frightfulatomic war! War that means annihilation of civilization. America this minute is in grave danger. The issue is amatter of government!

Christ Was Interested inGOVERNMENT

Few realize it, because they do nothear it today, but the GOSPEL OFCHRIST-the Gospel Jesus broughtfrom God and preached-was a jnes

sage about govel'11tnenl .'Yes, Jesus was interested in govern

ment. His Message was about a gOY·

ernment to RUL E TH E WORLD , andbring us WORLD PEACE!

In this momentous presidential year, what would Jesus Christ do about thisejection if He were here as a nativeborn American?

Would He vote for Goldwater?Would He use His influence to keepthe Johnson administration at the helmin this world crisis ?

Many of you undoubtedly have readthe famous book, /11 His Steps, byDr. Charles M. Sheldon. It has beenone of the all-time best-sellers. It is thestory of an entire congregation whichset out to do. in all circumstancesdaily, just as Jesus would do-to " follow His steps:' as we are admonishedby Peter. My only criticism of thebook is that its characters, like mostpeople who think they follow Jesus, acted as they supposed Jesus would actinstead of studying the Bible to findout how He did act.

The Apostle Paul said: "I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live;

by Herbert W . Armstrong

yet not I, but Christ liveth in me"(Gal. 2:20) . He admonished, "Let thismind be in you, which was also inChrist Jesus" (Phil. 2:5) . A person is110t reall), a Christian unless he followsChrist-acts as Christ would act-un·less Christ is living His life in him.

What would Jesus do in this crucialelection ?

To understand what Jesus would dowe must take a quick flash-back of thegovernments of this world from itsfoundation until now. This is necessaryfor a true perspective. We are proneto view politics, government, and worldevents from the standpoint of thispresent world.

How It All Started

In the beginning, God created theheavens and the earth (Gen . 1:1) . Inrulership over this earth God sent a

cherub who sealed up the sum total ofperfection, wisdom, and beauty. Histhrone was in Eden. He was ruler overa peaceful world populated by beingssuperior to humans-spirit beings calledangels (Ezek. 28: 12-15) .

But as this brilliant shining "Star ofthe Dawn"-Lucifer-contemplated hisglory, pride lifted him up, ambitionseized him, and suddenly be becamedissatisfied with a rulership limited toone single planet. He became jealous of

God, set his heart to rival the Etern alCreator Himself, and left th is planet ina war of conquest, in which a third ofhis angels fo llowed him, attemp ting toconquer and rule the universe ( Isa. 14:12·1 5; Rev. 12:4 ) .

But he was cast back down to earthin defeat, disqua lified even as earthruler, tho 110t to be dethroned until asuccessor ;1 both qualified and inallgll

world broug ht physical dest ruction tothe earth by a flood ; just as the fornication of Sodam and Go morrahbrought physical destruction and chaosto those cities by f ire; just as the sinsof the present evi l world have doomedit to physical destruction once again byfire, so the sins of the angels causedthe face of the earth to suffer greatviolence, and it became chaotic, in confusion, waste and empty (Gen. 1:2).

Fi rst Chance at W orld Rule

Then in six days God Almightybrought order out of chaos, created thepresent vegetable and animal li fe, andcreated upon earth a new race, the raceof human mortals. Adam was gi ven ruleove r the low er species-animals. Lucifer, a cherub, had been g iven rule overangels. But, while man was made a

little lower in status than angels, hewas made in the image of God withposs ibilities, thru conve rsion, o f beingborn of God, and changed into immortal spi rit beings, high er in orderthan ange ls.

In the Garden of Eden was the Treeof Life- symbolic of the Holy Spiritof God Himself, by which Adam couldhave been raised to this higher immortal and divine level.

First, Adam was given opportunityto qualify as WORLD RULER. He couldhave become successor to the formerLucifer, now re-named Satan (mea ningAdversary, Rival, Aggressor ) . Adamwas put to the test to determinewhet ber he would obey God and proveable to RULE with God 's Laws.

In the fatef ul test with Satan, Adamd isobeyed God, accepted the rule ofSatan over him-yielded to humanpride , lust and greed. Th us he placedhimsel f and his children under therule of Satan. He failed to overthrow

Satan. He failed to prove he could obeyGod and carry out God 's governmentover those God shou ld have placed under him.

Had Adam obeyed God and provedable to def eat Satan in this test, hecould have partaken of the "Tree ofLlFE"-he would have been begotten

of GOD. later BORN of God, changedfrom mortal hum an to immortal anddivine God, of the very family-theKINGDOM-of GOD! All earth's mortals, as his chi ldren, would have beenunder his rule. He wou ld have becomeworld ruler foreve r!

But Adam placed himself and hischildren UNDER THE RULE OF SATAN.

Adam was driven from the Gardenof Eden lest he take of the tree of life, and gain immortality (Gen. 3 :22) .Th us he neve r received immortality, which is the gift of God by and thruH is Holy Spirit.

Satan thus retained his rulership, thru invisible sway of influence, temptation , and deception, ove r the world.

H ow Our Present System Started

Just how Satan manipulated humanmortals in the ways of government onearth during the first 1600 or 1700years, there is no historic record. \Vleknow merely that with very,' few exceptions, humans under Satan's invisiblesway followed the course of human passions, the wickedness of man was greaton the earth, and God destroyed allbut eight souls by the Flood .

Thus nation s were born, andthen Empires.

Since it is the system of strife andcom petit ion, each of the four phases ofthis civilizat ion-polit ical, economic, religious, and social-has striven constant ly to dominate and rule. NOT a Gospel merely about Himselfa Gospel of merely accepting Him, andthen, as part of this world, helping tomake it better!

When Jesus reached the approximateage of thi rty He was baptized, andanointed with the Holy Spirit as theChrist. But before He preached a word-before He could even enter uponHis ministry, He, like the first Adam, had to meet Satan in the greatest contest in all eternity!

Christ quotedScripture, accepted it to mean what itsays, overcame Satan by obeying it!Jesus withstood Satan's temptations, reojeered his deceptions, refused to obeyhim, conquered him by obeyi1lg GOD!Then He commanded Satan, "Get theehence !"-and the devil obeyed andslunk away!

Then and there Jesus Christ qualified to succeed Satan as RUL ER OVER

ALL TH E EARTH! But the time had notyet come for Him to be inaugurated intooffice. First, He had to return to thethrone of God and receive God's official authorization.

God had allotted ONE MILLENNIALWEEK-that is, a period of seven thousand-year "days"-for the accomplishment of His divine PU RP OSE in humanity on this earth. That divinePurpose is the creation of righteousspiritual Sons of God. God allotted thefirst six of these thousand-year periodsfor Satan's labor of deceiving the human race-six thousand years in whichmankind is permitted, if he chooses,to suffer from the "labor" of sin. When the first Adam failed to deposeSatan, God extended the duration ofSatan's dominion ove r the earth fo r sixthousand years. Thi s was necessary forthe accomplishment of God's greatPurpose.

Then, as "in six days God made theheaven and the earth, and the seventhday He rested and was refreshed,"even so in the seventh millenniumhumanity is to "rest" from sin, those

converted are to enter into God's spiritual rest;- and in this coming millenniwn Satan shall not do any workthat is, his work of deceiving theworld!

Then Jesus will return to earth, thistime in all His power and Gloryas KING of kings, and LORD of lords.

But, in God's great Plan, He haspurposed that Christ shall rule by andthru many saints then made immortal. They shall form the world-ruling kingdom-the KINGDOM OF GOD-whichKingdom shall rule over all the mortalnations on earth. Time had to be allowed for their conversion.

Jesus Preached GOVERNMENT

So, after meeting and conqueringSatan, Jesus devoted three and a halfyears to teaching His Gospel to HisDisciples.

His Gospel-the only true Gospel ofJesus Christ-is not what most peoplethink today. Few have heard it, today!

It was, and is, a Gospel of goodgovernment! The word "gospel" means"good news." And what Jesus preached- the Message He brought to mankindfrom God- was the good news of thecoming GOVERNMENT OF GOD-thecoming world-ruling government whichsball ooertbrow, blast out of existen ce,end rule in place of every present government on earth.'

October, 1964

Yes, Jesus Christ said to Pilate thatHe was born to be a King ! He, Himself , is coming again as WORLD KING !

And His Gospel was merely, as onemight say, His political plalfo/'m forHis Kingdom. He revealed the way toenter it as one of its immortal citizens- the way of salvation . He revealed itsJaws .

What Jesus taught was that this present world, with its governments, itsreligions , its economics, its society, isan evil world-it is Satan's world-itis a world in competition against, andAT WAR AGAINST, HI S COMING KINGDOM-THE WORlD TOMORROW!

Did Jesus Come to Make Thisa BETTER WORLD ?

No , j eJIIJ did 1101 enter into THISWORlD'S politics! He called His Di sciples 0111 of this present evil worldout of all its customs and philosophiesand ways-to a life of SEPARATIONfrom the world,

Jesus said to His disciples, "FollowMe !" And one cannot fo llow Him andalso follow this present world ! He didnot mean for Christians to go out ofthe world, physically. He knew theymust live in it, but He taught that theyshould not be of it. In his final prayerfor His disciples, Jesus said to HisFather, "I pray not that thou shouldesttake them out of the world, but thatthou shouldest keep them from theevil. They are not of the world, evenas 1 am not of the world" (John 17:15-16) .

To His called ministers Jesus commanded: "Go ye into"-not away from- "all the world, and preach the G Oi

pel." He did not say go into the worldand become part of it, striving to makeit a better world. He said go into itand "preach the Gospel." And HisGospel is the Good News of a different world altogether--of a comingworld to be ruled over entirely not bythese present various world govern ments then reformed, but by HIS KINGDOM which shall blast forever out ofexistence every government that oper·ates today!

foreigners, here merely as the guests ofthe nation where they reside, as AMBASSADORS for Christ and His comingKingdom, here as representatives ofHIS coming Kingdom, not of any ofthis world's governments.

As the Word of God reveals in IICor. 5:17-20, " If any man be in Christ,he is a new creature: old things arepassed away. ., N ow then we areambassadors for Christ ."

The U nited States sends an ambassador to the Kremlin. He resides forthe time in Moscow, Russia. The Christian in the United States is in the samerelative position as the American ambassador in Russia. He is not a Communist. He does not regard the Sovietas his government, and he knows wellit is a gove rnment mortally opposed tohis government. He does not serve theSoviet government, nor enter into itspolitics, nor devote his time in Moscowto trying to eradicate the evils he seesin their system, or to making theirstate a ' better state, or to entering intotheir politics, or voting, or enteringtheir army or fighting for their cause.

Yet, he subjects himself to all theirrules and regulations that in any wayconcern him or his life while there. Ifthey drive automobiles on the left sideof the street, he conforms to theirregulations. his government, the Un ited States.Jesus taught His disciples to render

unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's. Specifically he was referring topayment of taxes. If the governmentlevies taxes, pay them. The Bible teaching for the Christian is to be SUBJECTto the powers that be in this world, but, on the other hand, Christians shallobey God rather than man.

The true Christian will so conducthimself as to be highly regarded by thepowers of government where he lives. He will be regarded by them as a goodcitizen. He will appreciate the privileges, advantages, and opportunities extended. He will regard himself as thepaying guest of the country where heresides, and he will act with due courtesy, submission to its rules and regulations insofar as they do not confl ictwith the commands of God, and submission to their penalty where they do.

But the true' Christian is one who[oltows Cbrist, and Christ did not vote!Jesus did not try to reform Caesar. Hedid not try to make this a better world.Rather, He preached the doctrine of aradically different world to come-andHe called His followers out of all participation in this present evil world, and to allegiance to HIS KINGDOMwhich is to come.

Citizenship in Heaven

But His World is the W orld T omorrow! His Kingdom, He told Pilate, is

29

110t of this world-that is, of thisAGE, this present time. This is Satan'sworld and Christ did not come to reform Satan, or improve Satan's handiwork, but to save His followers fromSatan and his system.

Since God's Kingdom is not literallyset up as yet, the true Christian's citizenship is now reserved in heaven( I Peter 1:4, Eph. 2:19) .

Christians are called to be separatefrom the world (II Cor. 6:17), and allits affiliations, whether social, political, economic or religious. They are not tolive by the philosophies, customs andways of this world, but by EVERYWORD OFGOD (Luke 4 :4) . Jesus taughtus not to live by traditions of thepresent civilization, but by God's laws(Mark 7:7-9) , and He taught here thatthose who disobey this teaching WORSHIP HIM IN VAIN. Yes, thousands callthemselves Christians, think they areconverted, believe in Christ, worshipHim, but worship Him in vain, following the course of this world and itscustoms and ways, instead of the commandments of God! (Mark 7:7-9 .)

Jesus said for the Christian to seekfi"st the KINGDOM OF GOD (Matt.6 :33) , and He also said we cannotgive allegiance to and serve two kingdoms (verse 24) ,

How and When ChristiansAre to Help Run Government

In the prophecy of Daniel 7, andespecially in verses 17-18, and 21-22,and 27, we find revealed how andwhen Christians are to take part in therunning of the government,

In this prophecy Daniel is shown theempires of this world from his day until the Kingdom of God. First was theChaldean Empire, to be followed bythe Persian, the Grecian, the Roman. There is now to be one more resurrection of the Roman Empire-aUnited States of Europe now presentlyforming.

But finally, at Christ's second coming, "the saints of the Most High shalltake the Kingdom, and possess thekingdom for ever, even for ever andever."

These present governments are torun their course "UNTIL the: . . . timecame that the saints possessed the king.

dorn." Th at time has not yet come.Until then Christians are to obey Godand be subject to the powers that be.

When Jesus comes aga in, it is pro·claimed: "The kingdoms of this worldare becom e the kingdoms of our Lordand of H is Chri st, and H E shall reignfor ever and ever" (Rev. 11 :15). Thenit is, as Jesus has said, " He that overcometh, and keepeth my works untothe end, to him will I give power overthe nations: and he shall rule them"(Rev. 2 :26.27). The smashing of thepresent governments of the world ispictured in Daniel 2:34·35 , 44.

Then Satan shall be shorn of powerto rule the world (Rev. 20:1 ·4). H isqualif ied successor, Chr ist, shall then beinaugurated into office. Thell begins theSabbath Millennium of Christ's reignwhen He shall set H is hand again tosave Israel and the world .

But you will notice, verse 5, she isshown to be a MOTHER chu rch. Shehas many daughters, who, even tho theyhave come out of her in "protest"naming themselves from the word" protest," nevertheless are labeled byGod's prophecy as "harlots."

And what caused the terr ible sinsof these g reat, popul ar churches- whohave DECEIVED ALL OCCIDENTAL NATIONS? ( Verse 2 and 18 :3.) W hatwas her forn ication?

W EST GERMANY today is focusing her attention on the political speeches of ambitious

men. The spark that ignited WarldWar II is once again in the making!

Only 26 years ago Hitler demandedand obtained the much-disputed SlI

detenland-s-z: move that eventually ledto world urar! Today, after a short 19years of uneasy peace, Germany is onceagain resounding with "Sudetenlandfor the Germans!"-a call which hasalready found supporters by the thousands !

Many Germans strongly resent theway their country was arbitrari ly partitioned after the wac. They are tiredof prolonged American inaction overthe split between East and West. Theyare demanding ACT ION to achieve thereunification of East and West Germany, as well as the return of the territories ceded to Poland, RIIHia, andCzecboslovaeia at tbe end of the war!

German Refugees

Spearheading the growing discontentover the "raw deal" which Germany received at the hands of the Allies are9 million refugees from East Prussia,Pomerania , Silesia and other regionsthat were all once part of pre-warGermany. In 1945, as the Iron Curtaindescended over the Eastern zone, German nationals by the millions eitherfled or were driven out of their homesin the East by irate Czechs and Poles.Although most have found a new andprosperous life in West Germa ny, theserefugees-or " expelled ones," as theyare here called-are longing for theday when they can return to their oldhomes.

Strongly patriot ic and ever desirousin ~Kt:'r'jmg im: memories of their

H itler's Munich Agreement

Ownership of the Sudetenland, youwill remember, was one of the keyissues that led to World War II. Atthat time the pre-war world listenedwith sympathy to Hitler's pleas of"Sudetenland for the Germans!" W ithout co nsu lti ng Czecbcs lov akia-c-tbe o

The agreement was designedto bring "peace in our time"- in thewords of former British Prime Minister Chamberla in. But, as it soon turnedout, this was just Hitler's first smallnibble in a ravenous attempt to devourthe world.

After the war Sudetenland was returned to Czechoslovakia. Not desiringto see history repeat itself, the Czechsexpelled the Germans from the regained terr itory. Th is, it was thought, would prevent Germany's filing anyclaims for the Czech land in the future. But it did not solve the problem, fortoday , o n [y \ 9 years Iat e e, militant

CHAPTER SEVENTY-TWO

THE POWER OF A WOMAN!

S AMSON fell in love with a beautifu l Philistine woman named Delila h. (Judges

16:4.) The five representatives of the five rulers of Philistia had come to offer a

reward to Delilah if she would discover for them the secret of Samson's strength.

When Delilah asked them why they presumed that she could be paid to betray

Samson, they felt that she was about to refu se.

Delilah Makes a Deal

"You should do this for the good of our great nat ion and all your Philistine

friends," they anxiously told her. "You would be aiding in keeping down trouble and

bloodshed !"

Delilah eyed them quizzically for a few moments.

" I suppose you are right ," she finally said, casually running one hand over her

hair to push it into place. " If I find out what you want to know, how much are

you willing to give me ?"

"W e'll give you a total of 5,500 pieces of silver, and no more," the relieved

spokesman for the agents replied . "This money will be delivered to you just as soon as

Samson is in our hands!" (Judges 16:5.)

"Be prepared to pay me very soon," Delilah quipped as she smiled at the five

men. Although Samson didn't realize it, the woman he loved was proving to be a

greedy opportunist who would do anything for enough money.

That same night she began to question Samson about the source of his strength .

"One reason why I admire and respect you so much," she fondly whispered to

him in a time of intimacy, " is that your enemies have never been able to overcome

you because of your great physical power. ] know that you must have some se

cret source of such unusual power, It would please me if you would tell me that

secret,"

" ] can think of no worthwhile reason why you should know such a thing ," Sam

son replied, "You are a bit too curious to be pleased."

"] suppose so," Deli lah tactfull y sighed , " I merely hoped that you would share

with me the knowledge of what great thing it would take to overcome such a strong

man as you."

Samson fondly surveyed Delilah , He had such an ardent affection for her that

he didn 't wish to refuse her some kind of answer, Yet, he did not completely trust her

with the secret of his great strength, And Samson did not want to risk unnecessary

danger. So he decided to use his sharp wit again so that, if Delilah talked too much

to the wrong people, he might have another good laugh on the Phil istines,

"If my enemies were to carefully bind me with seven strong, green strips of bark

twisted together," Samson said, " then my special strength would fail me, and ] would

be no stronger than any other man of my physical development." (Judges 16:7,)

"Samson, why do you tell me such a tale?" Delilah gently scolded him, thereby

trying to cause him to think that she didn't believe him,

"Why don't you try binding me with such a cord and see what happens ?" Sam,

son asked,

" I think ] shall do just tha t, my darl ing," Del ilah replied,

Hours later, Delilah contacted the representatives of the rulers of Philistia to tell

them what Samson had told her,

" It could be that Samson made up a story to test your loyalty," one of the men

observed,

"] realize that ," Delilah answered, "but you'll agree that we'll have to take achance, Furnish me with the seven strong, green strips of bark braided together , and

I'll manage somehow to tie Samson up with them, and I'll have men hiding in an

other part of my home to leap on him if he cannot break the cord !"

"Excellent! " exclaimed the spokesman for the five agents , "We' ll send you the

cord right away! The rest is up to you!"

Another Laugh for Samson

Later, when everything was in readiness , Delilah produced the cord and playfully

wound it about Samson.

" ] took you at your word," she told him smilingly, carefully knotting the cord

at his wrists behind his back. "Now, if you are as helpless as you said you would

be, what if I should call for your enemies to come and take you ?"

"This little game of ours wouldn't be very interesting if you already knew what

would happen," Samson teased. "If you have some way to get in touch with my ene

mies this very minute , I'll face them !"

Samson was quite unaware that a number of picked Philistine soldiers were hid

ing only a few yards away, ready to pounce on him at the expected moment of his

helplessness. He was quite surprised when Delilah began shouting.

"Samson is bound!" she called out excitedly. "Come after him, you men!"

The hidden men, peeking through small slits in a curtain, failed to move or make

any noise. They first wanted to see what the Danite would do. They had been told

that he probably would struggle quite fiercely with his bonds if they proved to be too

much for him, and the soldiers were taking no chances.

Suddenly Samson broke the cord as though it were made of cobwebs, causing the

Philistines to fall back and quietly flee through a rear entrance. Delilah was relieved

that the soldiers hadn't rushed into the room. She quickly regained her composure

and concealed her disappointment by smiling and applauding, (Judges 16:8-9,)

A few nights later, when she felt that enough time had passed so that Samson

wouldn't guess how anxious she was to betray him, she again brought up the subject

of his strength ,

"Why did you jest with me about the wonderful source of your great power?"

she asked in a hurt tone, "1 don't think it was fair of you to tell me something that

wasn't true."

"1 didn't think you had a good reason to be serious," Samson explained, "so 1

put you off with a light answer."

" But 1 was serious!" Delilah insisted, "Why shouldn't you tell me what a won

drous thing it would take to overcome such a man as you?"

Again, because of his deep feeling for Delilah, Samson felt that he should give

an answer, but he was too wary to tell her all she wanted to know,

Samson Still Cautious

"All right , Delilah," he sighed, "Here's what could prove my undoing. If 1 were

bound tightly with strong, new ropes that have never before been used for any other

purpose, then would 1 be only as strong as any other man of my size and develop

ment."

Delilah realized that this wasn't necessarily so, but there was nothing to do but

obtain the new rope and again hide the Philistines in her house while she once more

went through the rather childish procedure of playfully binding Samson,

"1 can't imagine why tying me up seems so fascinating to you," Samson com

mented, "but if it makes you happy, 1 don't mind,"

By this time Delilah had bound Samson very thoroughly with the heavy, strong,

new rope, She believed now that he would have great difficulty in getting free, what

with the manner in which she had wound the rope around and around his arms,

wrists, waist and neck. After tying a last knot, she abruptly backed away,

"Samson is bound!" she shouted, "Come out and seize him before he can loose

himself!"

Again the peeking Philistines held back until they could be doubly sure that it

was safe to expose themselves, \'V'hen they saw Samson flex his muscles and break the

ropes as though they were fine threads, they once more fled for their lives. (Judges

16:10-12,)

Delilah could well be thankful for the second time that the Philistines left in

stead of exposing themselves, She repeated her performance of the time before, to try

to cause Samson to believe that it was all a little game, however silly, to show him

how much she admired his unusual

physical power.

For the third time, several nights

later, Delilah launched into another at

tempt to uncover Samson's secret.

"You have mocked me twice in this

matter," she told Samson in a wounded

voice. "Don't you love me enough to

share your greatest secret with me ?"

"Of course I do," Samson answered.

"Now listen to this. As you know, I

often divide my hair into seven different

tresses. I'll lie here on the floor in front

of your loom. If you can weave my

seven locks with the web of your loom,

the main source of my strength will de

part from me.'"

For the third time Delilah half

heartedly arranged for Philistines to be

hidden in the next room while Samson

submitted to having his seven plaits of

hair being put through Delilah's loom.

Delilah purposely took so much time that Samson fell asleep. When she had

his hair woven with the web and securely fastened to the pin of her loom, she

cried out to the hiding men to leap out and seize Samson. Awakened, he sat up

suddenly, jerking the pin and the web loose from the loom by the strength of

his hair and muscles. As before, when the Philistines saw that he was free, they fled.

(Judges 16:13-14.)

"How can you say that you love me after mocking me three times about your

great strength?" Delilah asked in a slightly displeased tone.

"I can love you without having to answer all your questions," Samson re

plied with some irritation. "If you really care for me, you won't bother me any more

with this subject!"

The Temptress Finally Wins

Nevertheless, from then on, Deli lah kept badgering him with questions. Everyday

and every night she would ply him with questions about the source of his strength.

He began to feel that the risk he would run by exposing his secret wasn' t worth

what he suffered by her naggiog. In fact, he felt that he would rather risk death than

continue to put up with such nagging.

"All right! All right !" Samson finally exclaimed in desperation, clamping his

fists against the sides of his head. "I' ll tell you anything you want to know ! After

that I never want to hear any more from you about why I am as I am!"

Assuming an expression of compassion, though she was really quite elated , Deli

lah rushed to Samson and threw her arms about him. It appeared that this unprinci

pled temptress whom Samson unwisely loved was about to succeed where a whole

army had failed .

"I'm sorry, my darli ng !" she murmur ed. "I guess I didn't realize tha t I was being

"but at the moment I was horn I became a nazarite, which meant that I was dedi

cated to service for the God of Israel for my entire life. [J udges 13:1-25.} There are

several special things that a nazarite must do. One of those things is to let his hair

beard were to be cut off, my nazarite vow would be broken and God probably would

not give me the special protection He has given me all my life. Neither would He

give me the special strength I have at times when I am to perform unusual feats!"

(Judges 16:15-17.)

Delilah was certain that at last Samson had told her the truth . Later, she con

tacted the agents of the rulers of Philistia to tell them that Samson was about to be

come their prisoner. She arranged for the usual men to go into hiding in her house

that night.

When Samson returned from business elsewhere, Delilah met him with unusual

warmth . Because it was quite late, she sat on the floor and suggested that Samson lie

with his head in her lap. She sang to him softly, gently running her fingers through

his great mass of hair. Soon he was asleep, but she didn 't try to rush matters.

She waited until his heavy breathing indicated that he wouldn't be easily

awakened .

It was then that she silently signaled to one of the men in concealment, who

hesitantly appeared and fearfu lly moved toward the sleeping Danite. This man was a

barber whom Delilah had hired to join the Philistine soldiers.

Samson's Nazarite Vow Broken

It took time for this timorous fellow to get up courage to app ly his razor to Sam

son's flowing locks, but once he got off to a start , it didn 't take him long to deftly

crop the sleeping man's hair and beard off short. When his task was done, he lost no

time in leaving.

During this most unusual haircut , Samson had at times moved restlessly. Delilah

continued singing to him softly, hoping that he wouldn't spoil everything by awaken

mg.

But as soon as he was shorn, Delilah didn't care how soon he awoke. She sig

naled to the Philistines to come out of hiding, but they didn't dare until they could

believe that he was too weak to overcome them.

"W ake up to face your enemies!" Delilah scoffingly muttered to Samson.

Samson moved, but didn't awaken. Delilah pushed his head off her lap and prod

ded him with her foot. (Judges 16: 18-19.)

"Get up, Israelite! " she smirked. "You have company!"

Only half awake, Samson slowly got to his knees, at the same time sleepily rub

bing his head .

When he felt the absence of hair , his eyes popped open and he lurched to his

feet. Because he reeled slightly due to coming out of deep slumber so suddenly,

the hiding Philistines believed that he had suddenly become very weak. At last, after

running from Samson several times, they had the courage to charge out and swarmover him. .

Samson was sudd enly aware that two red -hotpieces of metal were being pushed directlytoward his eyes l( To be continued next iJsue)

Samson at first tried to beat them off as they came on, but suddenly realized he

no longer had his great strength. He began wondering how he had lost his hair and if

God had completely deserted him because of his breaking his nazarite vow. The an

swer was plain when it became apparent that he was powerless against the group of

brawny Philistine soldiers. Samson's love for a pretty pagan had been his undoing , just

as God had warned the Israelites. (Exodus 23:31-33; Joshua 23:12-13.)

The Philistines hauled Samson to the floor, then pinned him down and bound

him. By this time Deli lah had disappeared . She had slipped out to collect the 5,500

pieces of silver from the agents who were close at hand.

From then on, for the next hour or so, Philistines closed 1ll from all direc

tions. Samson was dragged outside and

confronted by a growing number of

enemy officers who were most jubilant

about the great victory over one man

a victory it had taken them more than

two decades to accomplish because God

had planned it that way.

Amidst the shouts and cheers of

the Philistines, Samson realized that he

had been betrayed by a woman he should

have shunned, and that God was punish

ing him. Bitter indeed was the distress

of this mighty man who had just been

outwitted and overpowered by a woman

of very low character .

To add to his misery and apprehen

sion, the bound Samson suddenly was

aware that someone was shoving two

red-hot pieces of metal directly toward

his eyes! (Judges 16:20-21.)

received through obedience, becausePeter describes "the Holy Spirit , whomGod hath given to them that OBEYHim" (Acts 5:32).

Aft er repentance and baptism, a trueChristian can beg in a life of overcoming and obedience to God's law andHis Kingdom here and now. This isdone through the Ho ly Spirit and itspower within him. This was the message ALL of God 's servants preachedth roughout the early inspired N ewTestament Church!

The Gospel Never Ch anges

When Philip went down to theGen tile city of Samaria, notice what hepreached . "Bu t when they believedPhilip preaching the things concern ingthe Kingdom of God, and the name ofJesus Christ, they were baptized bothmen and women " ( Acts 8 :12).

The Apos tle Paul preached this gospel to the Gentile Christians at Ephesus. He told them on his last visit :" And now, behold, I know that ye all, among whom I have gone preaching theKi ngdom of God, shall see my face nomore" ( Acts 20 :25) _

At the very end of his ministryaft er he had turned away from theJews-Paul continued to preach thissame meSJage! " And Paul dwelt twowhole years in his own hired house, andreceived all that came in unto him ,preaching the Kingdom of God, andteaching those things wh ich concernthe Lord Jesus Chr ist, with all confidence, no man forbidding him" (Acts28 :30-3 l ) .

The m essage of the soon-coming Kin gdom of God was the ONLYmessage of Jesus Christ ! It was the onlymessage His inspired Church and apos tles taught the world! It has been them essage of God's true Church throughthe ages!

The GOAL of rhe

Christian Life

The reason the Christian religionseems so emply and dead to most people today is that they are in ignorance

The PLAIN TRUTH

from page 8 )

of the real goal of the true Christianlife.

We are NOT put on th is earth byGod Almighty just to attend Churchonce a week, or to enter into "Christian" charities, or to hear sweet storiesabout the " little Lord Jesus," or tomake this human society a better worldthrough confusing-often contradicting- human efforts.

We are put here to prepare to RULEfOREVER, in the Kingd om or government of God! That is whythrough God 's Spir it- we must acquire God's character, and learn to liveby His LAWS which alone will finallybring this world peace and happilleu !These spirit/la/ laun show the WAY topeace and happiness and right govern ment throughout all eterni ty.

True Christians, then, have a JOB todo! They must demonstrate in this life- through God 's help and His Spirit- that they will keep God's lmos anddevelop His character so that they maybe qual if ied to RULE others later , andteach them the same happy way of life.N otice the reward for those who overcome their own human natu re andqua lify: " And he that ooercometb andke epetb my 1IJorks unto the end, tohim will I give POWER over the nations: and he shall RULE them with arod of iron; as the vessels of a pottershal l they be broken to shivers; evenas I received of my Father" (Rev. 2:

26-27) .Jesus repeats this same promi se

speaks of this same reward- again andagain. "To him that overcometb willI grant to sit with me in my throne ,even as I also overcame and am setdown with my Father in H is throne"(Rev. 3 :21) _

In Revelation 5: 10, John was inspiredto show that the saints shall become" kings and priests; and we shall reignon the earth ."

True Christians-those who over

come themselves and develop God'scharacter through living by H is lawswill be g iven altthorit), as kings andpriests in God's Kingdom to be set upon this earth after Jesus returns. What

October. 1964

a tremendous GOAL we can have in thislife !

"Bles sed and holy is he that hathpart in the first resurrection : on suchthe second death hath no power, butthey shall be priests of God and ofChrist and shall REIGN with Him athou sand years" (Rev. 20:6) . UnderChri st as King of kings, the overcoming saints will help RU LE this earthand bring it peace and joy at last!

That is WHY we must learn to obeyGod and H is laws now! That is thereal PURPOSE of the true Christian life .

There is only O N E true gospel-onetruly "good news"-and this is thatVERY gospel which Jesus preached!

Jesus Chr ist said H is true Church

would be preaching that very gospel asa last "witness" to all nations in ourvery day just befo re He returns again !" And th is gospel of th e Kingdom shallbe preached in all the world fo r a witness to all nations; and th en shall theend come" (Matt. 24 :14) .

You are receiving tha t gospel th isvery instant ! Through the "W ORLDTOMORROW" broadcast and T he PLAINTRUTH magazine, this message ofCh rist is being taken to all nations asa last "w itness" to the world. MayGod help you to understand andHEED!

SO many ask : " HOW does it happen th at I findmy subSCriptio n price for Th e PLAL~ TRUTH hasalrudy bun IUl1d? Hew can you p ubli sh such ahigh class magazin e without advertising revenue ?"

The answer is as simple as it is aston ish ing! It isa paradox. Christ's Gospel can not be sold likemercha ndise. You cannot buy salvation. Yet it doescost money to publish Christ's TRUTH and mail itto all conti nents on earth. I t does have to be paidfori T his is Christ's work . W e solve th is problemChri sfs WAY!

Jesus said . " This Gospel of the Kingdom shallhe preach ed (and published-Mark 13:10) in allthe world for a wuness unt o all nations " (Mat .24 :14) At tb is t ime, just before the end of this age,A PRICE must bt paid for the magazine , thebroadcast. the Correspondence Course, or oth er [it erature . But HOW ? Christ forbids us to Jt ll it tothose who receive it : "Freely ye have received: 'said Jesus to His disciples whom He was sendi n,gto procl aim His Gospel . " freely G IVE !" .. It ISmort bln ltd," He said, " to G IVE than to receive. "

Goo ' s WAY is the way of lOVE- .1Od that isthe way of g i ~ i ,,!. God expects every ch ild of Histo ~;"t frtt,u'ill offerings and to tithe. as Hismeans of paying the costs of carrying His Gospelto otbers. "Th e Sudetendemscber Tag: 'thundered Dr. Seebohm, "is more thanjust a demonstration by refugees or areunion of the homeless. As in theprevious years it is a political and anational demonstration. It is an annually recurring proclamation by awhole nation before the enti re humanity. ...

"W e especially gua rd ourselves, the refore, against the accusations ofos r enemies in the East and IF est andamong our own peop le, who besmearour f riendly patriotism and our fight.. . . [emph asis ours.]

Dr. Seebohm went on to call forjustice with the words : "W hat, in ourcase, is justice? It means, in concreteterms, the RETURN OF THE ROBBEDSUDETEN-GERMAN HOMELAND TO THESUDETEN-GERMAN PEOPLE. In order toobtain such an amendment of the present status quo, W E NEED THE SUPPORTOF THE ENTJRE GERMAN NATION, inwhose own interests such a reform mustlie ... !" (bitlmg, Stuttgart, May 28,1964, emphasis and translation ours) .He went on to defend vigorously thenotorious IIfllllich Agreement as j/ll/ and, ight for the German people.

Claim of " D ivine Missi on"

Dr. Seebohm has managed to playpolities well. He has held h is seat as\Vest Germ any's transpo rt minister forfifteen turbulent years, duri ng whichtime he has burst forth with annualspeeches hardly less embarrassing forthe Bonn government than the last one.In Stuttgart, 1962, for example, heurged the return of the SudetenIandwith the revealing words: "Not for thesake of owning it do we want our old

The PLAIN TRUTH

homeland again, but 10 flllfill a missionthat God entrusted to Adam in paradise!" (Del' Spiegel, Hamburg, May27, 1964. )

In making such claims D r. Seebohmhas left himself wide open to beinglabeled a radical and a N azi. Yet thatdoes not seem to faze him, for it is nota secret in West Germany that the politically powerful refugee organ izationsare riddled wilh " former" Nazis!

Dr. Seebohm most empbatically supports the observation that many refugees not only were, but still are, N azis.As early as 1951, while addressing agathering of ex-patriots in the WestGerman city of Kassel, Dr. Seebohmcandidly admitted: "We bow ourselvesin reverence before every- and I emphasize every-s-symbol of om' people, under which Germans bave offered their lives for the Vaterland"(Del' Spiegel, May 27, 1964) .

W hat were the symbols under whichGermans-German soldiers-" offeredtheir lives for the Vaterland" ? Tens ofthousands died for the Kaiser in WorldW ar I, but more recently millions perished in the bloody attempt to hoistthe SWASTIK A over Europe and theworld . D r. Seebohm said, in effect:W e bow ourselves before the Jwastika. He may just as well have come rightout and admitted "We Nazis are NazisJtill" !

But let us look further at documented proof of Nazis in the refugeeranks.

The N azis Among Refugees

The start ling revelation of Nazi ismin the ranks of Germany's refugees waspub lished in an article ent itled "AreRefugees Nazis?" which appeared inthe May, 1964 issue of Koneret, aHamburg monthly. Here reporter Manfred Bissinger lists a number of highrefugee-organization functiona ries. Itreads like a roll -call at one of Hitler'sSS briefing s!

Writes Bissinger : "Many [Nazis]have found a vast field of oper ationsin the refugee organizations. So, for example:- former SS.O berfiihrer and President

47

of the State Supreme Court, Dr.Herbert David today occupies an elevated position among the SudetenGermans;

-c-Hen lein's former colleague, RudolfStaffen, today public relations con sultant with the Federal Directorateor the Sudeten-Germans;

- former SA .nrigadeflibre, and holderof a [Nazi] Party gold medal, Dr.Fritz Kell ner, today member of theboard of directors of the W itikoblind (a refugee organization) ;

-[Dr.] Otto UIitz, decorated by Hitler with a gold honor-cross for hisexemplary activity in the N ationalSocialist field as Fiihrer of the German population of Poland, todayspokesman for the Upper Silesian[ refugees] , decorated with the Federal Ge rman Service-Cross for servicefor Germ ans abroad;

- former SS-Hallptl turmjiihrer in theSecurity Service, D r. Walter Hergl ,today member of the board of directors of the If/ itikoblf11d;

- former Obergebietsjiibre« of the Hit ler [ugend [ Hitler Youth Corps],Dr . Ernst Schlund er, today likewisea director for the W itikoblmd . . .etc. etc.

"Not to mention the ex-ministersTheodor Oberlander and Hans Kruger. The distr ict judge from Konit z wasfor years uncontested President of theRef llgees' Federation- wh ich with its2.4 million members is the secondlargest organization in W elt Germany. It prides itself on being the of ficialIpokeJmal1 for all German rejugees,ESPECIALLY IN POLIT ICAL MATTERS...."

Add to the list former N azi Bargermeister of Salzbrunn, Erich ScheIlhaus, now spokesman for the Silesian-German refugees, and one should at leastbegin to get a pretty good idea as towho is behind the latest calls of "Sudetenland for the Ge rmans" !

Th ese men, now in positions of leadership in the radical and powerful refugee organizations, are former Nazis lThey cheered Hitler' s rise to power, app lauded his speeches demanding theseizure of the Sudetenland and were partof the "master-race" colossus thatsprawled over Europe from the Pyrennees to the Volga and from Lybia to

They supported Hitler' sdmm-beetin g, j/ag9Jlvinging, gooses/epping Nazi rallies in Numberg andother cities just as faithfully as theyattend the dru m-beat ing and flagwaving refugee rallies, like the one inN Urnbe rg, today. Un daunted by thecollapse of the T bird Reich, they stillharbor the belief of having been calledfor a divine mission "which God en trusted to Adam in Paradise"!

Refugees Politicall y Powerful

\'qestern observers have been surprised that after his latest Nazi outbursts D r. Seebohm still retains his postas minister of transport with the Bonngovernment. In fact, one whole weekpassed before Chancellor Ludwig Erhard summoned him for a one-hourconference, from which D r. Seebohmdeparted unperturbed .

The secret to Dr. Seebohrn's outercalm lies in the power he wields inWest Germany's po litics. As leader ofthe Sudeten-German refugees, he hascontrol oyer some 700,000 votes. Newsanalysts have hin ted th at the presentgovernment needs him as a magnet [orthe votes of nationalists and dissatisfiedrefl/gees. With elections coming upnext year Chancello r Erhard cannot af ford to dismiss this radical but infl uential man from his foll owing .

Other German political leaders areequally anxious to curry the favor ofthe refugees. Speaking at a reunion ofPomeranian ref ugees earlier last May,Vice-Chancellor Erich Mende defendedtheir demonstrations as " 'maintenanceof a natural right' and demonstrationof the German people's will for reunifi cation" (DPA release, May 10, 1964) .

Thi s "please-the-refugees" attitudehas resulted in the intensifica tion ofclaims for the return of the formerGerman territories now held by Poland. And Germans are becoming daringenough not to merely reject Americanparticipation in matters dealing withreunification, but even to propose reunion in spite of what America wants !As D r. Seebohm said, their aim is "tocontinue on the already plotted political course of the Sudeten- German Of

W ASHINGTON ... '" (Zeittmg, May 28,1964.)

Ame rica Blissful ly Ignorant

But how is W ashington reacting toall of this? Is America will ing to letthe Germans "call the shots"? Are themen in W ashington will ing to turn adeaf ear to an outspoken Nazi makingHitler-like claims before an audienceof fo rmer high-ranking Nazis? Whathas Was hingto n done about Dr. Seebohm's defense of Hitler's MunichAgreement and his radical demand fo rreturn of the Sudetenland to Germany ?

The answer was contained in an article appearing in Der Spiegel over aweek after Dr. Seebohm had delive redhis controve rsial speech : "There used tobe a time when Seebohm's Sundayspeeches drew protests from befriendedWe stern powers. Seebohm's latestspeech caused no such reaction. At anyrate, by the end of last week 110 protesthad been filed".'

Yes, America is asleep at the sw itch. And the average American is obliviousto the developments behind the scenesin modern Germany. America haspoured mill ions of tax dollars into theGerma n economy. She has pledged tndefend Germany against Communist aggression and placed herself squa rely behind the Germans in their demands fora UNITED G ERMANY. America is doingeverything possible to woo the bitterenemy of twenty years ago into beingher strongest ally.

Th e voices now being raised withinGermany itself are actually on ly the begin ning of a power which will onceagain dominate not only the Germanhomeland, but great areas of our West~

ern world !

Germany-a UNITED GERMANY withher former territories restored-is readyto emerge as the strongest nation oneertb at the head of a revitalized andresurgent Europe! Thi s power colossusis then going to deal a death -blow tothe U nited States and Great Britain, andrule this wo rld.

To day's Nazi-backed German refugeeclaims are indeed like a playback of thebeg inning contentions of World WarII. These events are well worth watching , and watching carefully ! Be sure
