The James Weir People'sChoice award began over40 years ago, when Weirapproached City Hall withthe idea of forming an artscouncil. They're al-lowed to vote, but they haveto be old enough to writetheir name," said WeyburnArts Council curator, RonRor. Saskatchewan economic progress in 2014As 2014 comes to an end, Saskatchewan's economy will
likely set records for population growth, jobs created, manu-facturing sales and wholesale trade.
"There were major forces at work in 2014 that impactedeconomies all over the world," Economy Minister Bill Boydsaid. "In spite of those pressures, several economic indicatorssurpassed 2013 levels as a result of our diversified and resil-ient economy."
Saskatchewan's population hit a record 1,129,899 onOctober 1, 2014, up 1.63 per cent over October 2013, whichis the second highest growth rate among the provinces.
The unemployment rate in the province remained low at3.4 per cent in November 2014. Saskatchewan has had thelowest unemployment rate among the provinces for 24 con-secutive months. In the January-November period, Reginahad the lowest unemployment rate (3.4 per cent) amongmajor Canadian cities, while Saskatoon had the second low-est rate (4.1 per cent).
Saskatchewan's job growth remains positive, with Novem-ber 2014 recording 15,300 new jobs held when compared
to November 2013, an increase of 2.8 per cent - more thantriple the national average. This was the trend for the yearwith the first 11 months of 2014 recording an increase inemployment of 10,500 people in the province, up 1.9 percent over the same time period in 2013. Saskatchewan hadthe second fastest rate of job growth among the provinces.
"Job growth continued to be strong in 2014," Ministerresponsible for Immigration, Jobs, Skills and Training Jer-emy Harrison said. "We made significant investment intoAdult Basic Education programming as well as training andapprenticeships to ensure our work force remains strong."
Manufacturing sales totalled a record $14.0 billion in thefirst 10 months of 2014, a 5.9 per cent increase over thesame period last year. Wholesale trade totals for the first 10months of 2014 were a record $21.6 billion, up by 4.0 percent over the first 10 months of 2013.
"Looking back at 2014, it was a fairly good year forSaskatchewan," Boyd said. "As for 2015, forecasters predict theprice of oil and our economy will bounce back - and we'll returnas one of the top economic performing provinces in Canada."
Motorists remindedto slow down &watch for childrenreturning to school
The holiday season is coming to an end and children willsoon be heading back to school. CAA Saskatchewan re-minds drivers to be alert around schools and playgrounds.
Here are a few safety tips for motorists:• Slow down to the posted speed limit.• Be prepared to stop for safety patrols at intersections
and crosswalks.• Always stop for school buses that are loading or un-
loading students.• Allow students enough time to cross the street safely
especially as intersections can be covered in ice and snow.• Watch for children darting out from between parked
cars or buildings.CAA also encourages parents and guardians to help their
children stay safe on the way to and from school by teachingthem to stop, look both ways and listen before crossing thestreet, and to wait for the signal of the CAA school safetypatroller when crossing the street in a school zone.
CAA Saskatchewan has sponsored the School Safety Pa-trol program since 1951 and approximately 3,900 patrol-lers assist in 55 communities with 147 schools around theprovince. CAA Saskatchewan provides training materials, supplies, stop paddles and reflective vests free of charge or atcost. The 25th Anniversary of the CAA Saskatchewan SchoolSafety Patrol Jamboree is scheduled for April 30 to May 2,2015 in Regina. Registration and details are available atwww.caask.ca/patrollers.

From one season to anotherBy Linda Wegner
It's all over for another year. Christmas, that is. Accompanied by a sense of mixed reliefand sadness, for me the first week in January is busy with the work of packing awaydecorations and storing what's left of decadent goodies in the freezer. The list of things-to-do also includes the job of fitting left-over rolls of wrapping paper into corners where theywill be neither obvious nor forgotten. Although the weeks and for some, the months, ofpreparation that go into making Christmas a highlight of the year are marked by weari-ness and sometimes, stress, those thoughts are as quickly packed away as the trapping thatgo with the season. I tuck a lot of beautiful memories into those plastic bins destined forstorage in the basement.
Over the past month I've explored ideas for choosing gifts as well as thoughts concerningwrapping and unwrapping the presents we've chosen to give and the ones we've beenblessed to receive. Heading into 2015, I'm facing the new year with a much more gentleattitude toward myself and others.
Perhaps it's the aging process or a growing understanding of what God's love is aboutbut in the midst of the pain and ugliness of a world seemingly determined to destroy itself, the Prince of Peace still reigns in the heart of those who ask Him to be their Lord. Whereany trace of God seems negated by evil, Emmanuel, "God with us", is reborn within the lifeof anyone who accepts His request to come in. In other words, the peace and joy ofChristmas don't have to exit with the entrance of another year.
"…the eyes of the LORD your God are continually on it from the beginning of the yearto its end." (Deut 11:11,12)
By Helen WallerIt's that time of year again! We get to wipe the slate clean
and start all over.New resolutions like eating healthy, exercising and spend-
ing less seem to be at the top of everyone's list. I am guessingthat it has a lot to do with what we all just did in the last weekor two.
If your Christmas looked like mine, you ate too much andspent even more. I tell myself every year that it's going to bedifferent, but alas, here I am with a full belly and an emptywallet.
New year's has come and gone, and with it went my resolu-tions. I make them every year. By about mid January, (andthat's stretching it) I have given up on the exercising every dayand eating only healthy foods. It's not to say that I don't thinkit's a good idea. I definitely think our society could use a "less

Some trouble over ChristmasThis was quite a different Christmas for our family. It was a good Christmas in that the
whole family was able to get together, but especially that we were able to welcome a new babygirl into the family, just a few days before Christmas. But the circumstances of gettingtogether were not the same as other times. Usually all of us are in quite good health, but thisyear was different. One son came home with a broken ankle, from cross country skiing, andwas on crutches. Another son arrived with a bad sore throat, which lasted for quite a fewdays. But more trouble was that over half of the rest of us came down with the stomach flu.It wasn't all at once, but staggered over several days. And the intensity of the bug wasdifferent for each one. For one in the family, it was so bad that she was taken to the hospitalfor an IV, which fortunately helped her recover quickly. Stomach flu is never pleasant, butit is so much more difficult when so many in the family are affected at the same time. I wasn'tpleased to see this sickness in the family, but there was something that I was pleased to see,and that was a willingness to help out. The ones who were well did what they could to helpthose who were sick and the young ones. One son had the magic touch of putting the infantdown to sleep, and it seemed that he did this even better than his mother. Cathie did somenight duty keeping an eye and ear open for a not well mother, and an infant, who neededattention. It seemed to me that everyone did all they could to help out wherever possible.Like I said, I wasn't pleased to see this flu bug, but it was very nice to see a family pullingtogether to get through a few tough days. But it made me think of the many people whodon't have family and friends ready and willing to help out when needed. Sickness can makesituations near impossible for single mothers and elderly and others who don't have goodsupport near at hand. As we enter this New Year, let's seek to keep an eye and an ear out forthose who might need a helping hand, and this will make for a better New Year for them, but also for you because I believe that God blesses those who look after the people that Heloves so dearly, the people that He touches, through our helping hands. May you have ahealthy and happy New Year and may you be a blessing to those who need your helpinghand. - Rev. Doug Loden, Calvary Baptist Church

Happy New Year, His love is watching over you!
50%30%20%
The New Year’s resolution
is a little more" mentality but the idea of having to stick to a regime all year long is actuallydepressing to me.
So this year, I made a resolution that I think will be pretty easy to stick with. I am going tonot make any more resolutions that I can't seem to hold on to. Rather, I am going to takeeach day as it comes. Start fresh each morning, doing the best I can. As a mom, and awoman, I think us gals have a tendency to be a little too hard on ourselves. (That's anunderstatement). We seem to focus on what needs to be done to improve something (likeyour husband's wardrobe….that's a whole other article), rather than focus on all the thingswe have done already!
So this year, I have a new plan. I am going to take it day by day. I am going to learn fromyesterday, hope tomorrow will be a little better but live for today. I plan to fit in as muchexercising and eating healthy as my time spent at the rink allows. Right now, that's where Ispend most of my days and one day I will miss being there.
Perhaps a bottle of water rather than a pop at the canteen. Maybe stand and cheer, ratherthan sit and watch. Either way, I am going to do the best that I can. Each day, juggling work, kids and a husband (perhaps even sneak in a life of my own) will look different. Somedaystake out will have to be on the menu, and somedays I may just pull off a turkey stew that ishealthy and the kids actually enjoy. (Honestly…it just happened!).
This year looks like I am going to be wearing a pair of rose coloured glasses. Some mayeven refer to it as denial, but I do believe what you look for, you will find. So, isn't it a wisechoice to look at life for all the good things it has to offer? Perhaps that way you will findeven more!

The 11th annual JAMS Family Christmas Day Dinnerwas a huge success this year. Jen, Ali, Mikki, Sandy (JAMS)and their friends and family put on a Christmas feast for148 people who would otherwise have spent Christmas Dayalone. Sandy and her volunteers fed individuals in the hallitself and delivered to several shut-ins in the community.
The JAMS family were pleased to see many new facescome through the door. Johnson was happy to see that thereal meaning of the event is starting to catch on, "that noone should spend Christmas Day alone." She added, "Ithas nothing to do with social or economic status, it's anevent for everyone!" This year Sandy, her husband Joeland the rest of the family and friends served individualsranging from six months old to 96-years-old.
Johnson credits the success of the meal on the amazingfinancial support of the community. Several businesses aswell as personal donations make putting on the meal aworry-free time for her family. "We have confidence in thecommunity. They have always come through for us."
The dinner is also a success because the hall is set up sothat people can sit together and visit. Tables are set for tenwith real china and cutlery. The JAMS family usually splitsup and visits with the attendees. "It's all about relationships
JAMS dinner a huge success
and making people feel special and included," notesJohnson.
The amazing volunteers have made the event easier ev-ery year. Johnson states that while they had a record crowdthis year the amount of volunteers was down. "We hadfolks come in from as far away as Arcola to help us out."The volunteers we did have worked extra hard to set upand take down. Johnson noted that the packing up is thehardest part as she and her family are pretty tired by thatpoint. "We were blessed to have the Fisher family show upto do dishes for about the fourth year in a row. They comein at 2:00 p.m. and wash dishes until they are all done-it'samazing."
Although this dinner is free to anyone who can't affordto pay, Johnson is pleased that the dinner raised $1,400dollars for the Knox Hall. The donation was a token ofappreciation for the generosity shown to them for nine ofthe 11 dinners that have been served. The Knox has do-nated the hall to the JAMS family and they want to giveback by donating to the Hall for a project of their choice.
The JAMS family would like to thank everyone for mak-ing their 11th dinner a huge success. They look forward tomaking next year bigger and better.
