DESCRIPTION
The Westside Guide is made possible through businesses, active community leaders and involved neighbors of Milwaukee’s decorative, historic, diverse, and thriving west side. This is the only publication devoted to the west side of Milwaukee and dedicated to publicizing the great things happening here. This guide is developed by the people who live in these neighborhoods who know the landscape; offering the readers a unique insider’s tour to the most noteworthy landmarks and must-see attractions. As a result of citywide distribution 10,000 copies are shared for free with readers who live in Milwaukee, visit Milwaukee, or are interested in the developments of this treasured community. The Westside is loosely mapped as 76th street on the west border, Burleigh to the north, 27th on the east, and Wisconsin Avenue as the south border.

Welcome to the westside
Michael J. Murphy
Welcome to Milwaukee’s Westside!
This guide is an inside story to an area of Milwaukee with a rich and distinct identity. As Milwaukee historian, John Gurda, has so precisely described it, “The West Side has the greatest diversity of population, the greatest diversity of housing, and the greatest concentration of activists, both newcomers and old-timers.” Its extensive historical roots tell a story about active individuals, groups, and businesses that have shared a deep commitment to the area’s continued preservation, development, beautification and enhancement. The countless block watches, robust business districts, and interrelated residential and commercial efforts speak to the immense sense of community and civic engagement that make the Westside an ideal location to live, work, shop, play and own a business.
The Milwaukee Westside is loosely situated around Washington Park (see foldout map in center of the brochure). With Washington Park at its heart, the region branches out in all directions, fading out at Blue Mound Road to the south, 76th Street and Tosa Village to the west, Burleigh Street to the North, and 27th Street to the east. These boundaries are fluid borders that blend and mix with neighboring communities as thriving locales do.
Location is a fundamental aspect of any flourishing area. As anyone living in the Westside knows, we are only minutes away from key destinations. Situated between downtown Milwaukee and large suburbs to the west, the Milwaukee Westside has always attracted a mixture of peoples, from large groups of immigrants and working classes to some of the city’s most influential individuals and aristocracy, including Mayor Daniel Hoan and William Davidson and William Harley (founders of Harley-Davidson Motor Co).
The Westside’s location also offers great reasons to visit. It is home to some of Milwaukee’s most exceptional green spaces, including the Washington Park recreational areas and Urban Ecology Center and the natural landscape of Hawthorn Glen. Most recently, the Westside is also increasingly cultivating a vibrant arts community, featuring dozens of galleries highlighting works by local artists, unique boutiques, art walks, as well as displays of public art.
You are encouraged to keep and share this brochure and explore the neighborhoods blooming with fresh ideas and culture. Take in the arts, music, great dining and recreation that are constantly bourgeoning. Whether you call this home or are just passing through, in the Westside, there’s something to enjoy for everyone in the family.
Come see what we’re all about!
Best,
Michael J. MurphyAlderman, 10th District

Education, schools & FAITH
Whether teaching about science or teaching about spirituality –
or a combination of both – our Westside religious and educational institutions are witness to our shared values. The schools that gather our children and the houses of worship that gather believers provide the spirit of hope that helps us look to the future.

WESTSIDE NEIGHBORHOODS
ENDERIS PARKNEIGHBORHOODEnderis Park Neighborhood is a true oasis for city dwellers, where you will find residents walking dogs, jogging, pushing baby strollers and biking. The beautiful mostly brick housing dates from the 1930s and 1940s. The cultural heart of the neighborhood is the Enderis Playfield, named for Dorothy Enderis, a public recreation pioneer. To this day, the park remains a grounding center for the neighborhood with picnics, concerts and neighborhood activities. Neighbors rallied to raise money to install “Magic Grove,” a monumental steel sculpture by Wisconsin artist Nancy Metz White, providing neighbors an even more colorful place to gather in the Park. There is a rich sense of the past combined with the vibrancy of the present.
HISTORIC CONCORDIA NEIGHBORHOODThe Historic Concordia Neighborhood’s rich history dates back to 1850 when settlers created large estates on what was then the Watertown Plank Road. After that, it attracted the rich and powerful of the Victorian era who built spectacular homes and mansions. Most of these homes have survived intact for more than a hundred years. Each home was designed to stand apart from the rest for some of Milwaukee’s most prominent families and designed by some of the most accomplished architects in the country. Over the years, this showplace neighborhood showed the tarnish of age and was all but forgotten as
Milwaukee grew larger. Today, Historic Concordia is undergoing a revival. The neighborhood has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and designated as
Milwaukee’s Bed and Breakfast District. There’s a new spirit in the air, and great optimism from residents. Diverse and caring families have moved back to the neighborhood to purchase and restore the homes and mansions to their former glory. People from the suburbs are beginning to discover what longtime residents have known for years: commutes to work are minutes, not hours here; housing dollars go much further; and old-world craftsmanship has a value beyond dollars and cents today.
MARTIN DRIVENEIGHBORHOODThe Martin Drive Neighborhood is a small, safe and affordable neighborhood on the Westside of Milwaukee, fortuitously located between beautiful Washington Park to the North and historic Miller Valley to the South. Due to its tucked away location, the Martin Drive Neighborhood is quiet and surprisingly free of traffic. Its mainly one-way, tree-lined streets are often host to joggers, dog walkers and groups of children at play.
The Martin Drive Neighborhood is very accessible and centrally located. Only minutes from downtown Milwaukee, the neighborhood brushes against Wauwatosa to the west and it is a quick hop onto the freeway. Additionally, two large parks, a public pool, the Washington Park Library, cafes, restaurants and a number of unique shops are all within walking distance.
One of the most attractive aspects of the Martin Drive Neighborhood is a diverse and active group of residents, many of whom are involved in the close-knit neighborhood association. The Martin Drive Neighborhood Association continually works to increase communication among neighbors, encouraging them to join in community projects and always striving to become the best neighborhood possible!
SHERMAN PARKNEIGHBORHOODSherman Park is one of Milwaukee’s premier, culturally diverse, historic neighborhoods, offering some of the finest value in high-quality housing anywhere in the Milwaukee area. Block after block of beautifully maintained boulevards are lined with gracious, historic homes, featuring the highest concentration of brick and lannon stone homes in the city. Homes typically reflect a pride in craftsmanship that is rare today, including leaded and stained glass, intricate woodwork, and distinctive fireplaces. The housing stock in Sherman Park includes large duplexes, perfect for the owner-occupant seeking additional income; attractive and solidly built bungalows for the first-time buyer or small family; and uniquely styled larger, architecturally significant single family homes for established buyers or or those “trading up.”
During every season of the year, the Sherman Park neighborhood is abuzz with activity. Residents spend lots of time tending their yards and recently many residents have added lighting to their yards and garage areas. In the summer months, there are numerous block parties, picnics in the park and live music concert series. In the

summer months, there are numerous block parties, picnics in the park and live music concert series. In the winter, neighbors often help each other shovel.
Sherman Park’s easily accessible location is another plus since the neighborhood is minutes from downtown, on the doorstep of Miller Park (home of the Milwaukee Brewers), and close to major Westside employers, including Miller-Coors, Harley-Davidson, St. Joseph’s Hospital and many more. The active Sherman Park Community Association, composed of residents, businesses and institutions has the goal of supporting and promoting a good quality of life in the neighborhood by focusing on quality housing, diversity and safety.
UPTOWN CROSSINGNEIGHBORHOODUptown Crossing is a vibrant mosaic of residents, families, businesses and neighborhood stakeholders within the broader boundaries of Sherman Park. The central commerce district is literally at the “crossing” of two
transforming thoroughfares: North and Lisbon Avenues – where the Uptown Theater once drew large movie audiences years before and the communi-cations center for the Milwaukee Police Department now stands. Uptown Crossing is known as much for its sense of community (regular summer block parties, Christmas Caroling, enrichment activities, gardening get-togethers and more) as it is for the historic
bungalow architecture that sets this area apart. A public library, pizza restaurant, Asian grocery store, Irish pub, two major parks and active churches are all within walking distance.
WASHINGTON HEIGHTSNEIGHBORHOODWashington Heights Neighborhood on the western border of Milwaukee and Washington Park is described as a neighborhood, “In the City – Out of the Ordinary!” While the neighborhood is only minutes from downtown and close urban amenities, this area was once considered remote. It is characterized by its 1920s Arts and Crafts housing stock and stately homes lining Washington Boulevard a grand parkway that leads to the ever favorite Olmsted Park.
The Washington Heights Neighborhood Association is one
of the strongest neighborhood groups within the city, hosting many annual activities including a Boulevard Bash, Easter Egg Hunt, Rummage Sale, Haloween Spooktacular and Wine Tastings. Another annual event is the The Great Unveiling in mid-May. This event is like a reverse barn-raising where neighbors pitch in to remove old vinyl or aluminum siding from a house, setting the stage for a “re-birth” exposing the vintage exterior of a home. In Washington Heights, there is no shortage of quality housing stock or community spirit and neighborliness.
TOSA VILLAGEThere’s a distinct European feel in the heart of the Village of Wauwatosa, brought here by the first settlers in the mid 1800s. Pedestrian-friendly stores and restaurants with seasonal outdoor dining are reminiscent of the great villages of Europe. The Village of Wauwatosa exudes historic charm with its vintage architecture while simultaneously conveying contemporary flare and intrigue with its wide array of over 126 retail shops, restaurants, bars, and businesses.
WALNUT HILLNEIGHBORHOOD’The Walnut Hill Neighborhood was in a major corridor of expansion as the heavily German neighbor-hoods of the Northside rapidly grew. By the 1910s, the 30th St industrial corridor was lined with factories and was also the dividing line between the streetcar and auto-era suburbs. The industries of the corridor provided area residents jobs within walking distance, while Lisbon Avenue, a former plank road first constructed c.1850, Vliet St. and North Ave. provided the pre-WWII neighborhood with its commercial needs.
Today, Walnut Hill continues to welcome new residents, in part due to the work of many local churches. While the neighborhood maintains a large majority of African Americans, it is also home to the greatest concentration of Hmong, as well as an emerging Somali and Burmese population.
Washington ParkNeighborhoodThe Washington Park Neighborhood is rich with culture, history and amenities. At the heart of the neighborhood is Washington Park itself, built in 1891. The 124 acre park was designed by famous landscape architect Frederick Law Olmstead, who also built Milwaukee’s Lake Park and Central Park in New York City. The park is a hub of activity and features a senior center, a farmers market, a swimming pool, summer concerts at the historic band shell, a lagoon,

draw visitors to their growing commercial clusters, meeting places, unique shops, restaurants and services, as well as to introduce patrons to this strong and vibrant community. Additionally the business association has welcomed and supported other small businesses and districts, such as North Avenue, to participate in their events. The Vliet Street Business Association is best-known as the principal organizer of the Westside Artwalk. This event is held annually each April and draws hundreds to enjoy great art, dining and camaraderie. Throughout the year, the Vliet Street Business Association promotes the businesses and happenings from 43rd to 62nd Streets.
West Vliet StreetWest Vliet Street runs east/west on Milwaukee’s Westside from 43rd Street in the Martin Drive Neighborhood through Washington Heights to 62nd Street in Wauwatosa. This thriving business corridor is home to over 75 unique businesses and organizations. Today, West Vliet Street is known for its thriving art scene, unique dining venues, and a variety of distinctive services and retail shops.
West Vliet Street offers something for everyone at every time of the year. The one and a half mile commercial corridor boasts restaurants featuring cuisines using local and seasonal ingredients, art galleries, Milwaukee’s only children’s bookstore, floral shops, a green market during the summer and fall months, special shopping events throughout the year, and much more. In the summer months, Wick Field, a city owned recreational area located at 4929 W. Vliet, is a hub of activity featuring softball and kickball leagues, high quality tennis courts, and a friendly playground for the young and young at heart. Local American artist Jill Sebastian’s public art sculpture is a centerpiece on West Vliet Street, located at the Wick Field Commons, literally the midway point on West Vliet Street.
The pedestrian-friendly streetscape is flanked by Milwaukee Harp Lights, as well as bicycle lanes that are in use during the snow free months of the year. Benches, mini gardens, and bicycle racks can be found up and down the street. Two friendly Little Free Libraries are located along the business corridor encouraging all ages to “take a book, leave a book.”
Come explore all the West Vliet Street has to offer. You will discover there is something here for every age, style and taste on West Vliet Street.
recreation trails and playgrounds. Washington Park Neighborhood boasts beautifully constructed homes featuring a mix of architectural styles that range from grand brick Victorian mansions to cottages and frame homes. The Washington Park Library is the City of Milwaukee’s busiest neighborhood library. The neighborhood is quickly becoming known for its delectable food and including a locally owned café, bakeries, coffee shop and candy makers. Home to three outstanding primary schools, youth and family service organizations, and a community health center, as well as a large artist community and many public art projects.
WASHINGTON PARKPARTNERSWashington Park Partners is a community-led effort of diverse partners working together to build a thriving a neighborhood. The partnership consists of neighborhood residents, businesses, organizations and other stake holders. The vision for the Washington Park Neighborhood is of a thriving community where people want to live, learn, work, visit and play. To implement this vision, the partners have created a Sustainable Communities Plan with action steps in seven categories: Housing, Business & Jobs, Arts & Culture, Safety, Education, the Park, and Health & Wellness.
WASHINGTON HEIGHTSRAINBOW ASSOCIATIONWashington Heights Rainbow Association is available to foster a better understanding of gay and lesbian residents within the larger Washington Heights Neighborhood and provide support to its members. There are no annual memberships or participant dues. Members are encouraged to attend planning meetings, help with events, and participate in a variety of community endeavors. Members have enjoyed Brewer Game outings, Packer parties with neighborhood Rainbow groups, holiday/seasonal parties, and “Pridesfest” staffing as well as supporting other neighborhood groups and projects.
VLIET STREET BUSINESSASSOCIATIONFirst conceived of over 45 years ago, the Vliet Street Business Association was reinvigorated as a non-profit 501C(4) civic organization in 1998 by several new business and building owners who sought to reinvent the street, seeking to change old perceptions of crime and attract other quality destination businesses. As the street began to gel and draw more new businesses Vliet Street found a niche in promoting art and arts events to

GOOD THINGS TO EAT
28 Westside Guide • Good Things To Eat
There’s no taste like neighborhood cooking! Italian, German, French,
Mexican – several ethnic food styles have a home on the Westside. They’re located right next to traditional American fare and exquisite restaurants serving food that draws people from around the city. Throw in a variety of live music venues, and you’ve got a night on the town!

NEIGHBORHOOD COMMERCE
Neighborhood Commerce • Westside Guide 33
Our Westside small businesses reflect the needs of the
community, and they’re often operated by people who walk to the store or office right from home. So many needs are met right here – from services such as financial planning and real estate to shops such as hardware stores and one-of-a-kind boutiques. You can’t do it all – why not hire a neighbor?

Industry & manufacturing
While the Westside is known for its residential feel, we’re able to
support industrial businesses. From international icons with over a century of production, to new companies and small businesses, manufacturing is a Milwaukee mainstay and the 30th Street Industrial Corridor offers opportunity for more.

Valentine Coffee Co. was founded on the premise that coffee begins as a fruit, uniquely evocative of a particular time and place. This character – the terroir – is maximized by carefully roasting beans to the apex of natural sweetness, brightness, and balance… never to bitterness.
We start with the best beans available and a passion for everything delicious. We rely on curiosity, experience, and attention to detail to craft the most expressive – yet satisfying – coffee possible. In this pursuit, we never fail to enjoy ourselves, our work, or our coffee!
