Weston Youth Orchestra

BackgroundWYO was established in 1958 to provide an environment for young musicians to improve their performance skills through playing in an orchestra. Many former members have gone on to forge careers within the world of music, including conducting and performing with the world’s top orchestras, arranging and composing music as well as playing for West End shows.

We are a self-funding voluntary organisation whose income is generated solely from public performances and annual membership fees.

On average we perform four full concerts each year. Repertoire for these is primarily sourced from our own library; this includes works ranging from standard Classical repertoire through to music from Stage & Screen.

Joining WYOThere are two orchestras due to varying age, ability and experience. The Junior Orchestra (grades 1- 4) has an approximate age range of 8 - 14 years and the Senior Orchestra (grade 5+) has an age range of 12 - 21 years.

Rehearsals take place every Friday evening throughout the year at the Boulevard United Reformed Church. The Junior Orchestra rehearses 6pm - 7pm and the Senior Orchestra 7pm - 9pm.

Membership costs just £30 per year.

Programme Notes – First Half

Overture to Morning Noon and Night – Franz Von SuppéFranz Von Suppé, an Austrian composer of light operas during the romantic period, composed the ‘Morning Noon and Night’ overture when he was just 24 years old: it is one of his earliest works. Written as the introduction to the humorous play ‘A Morning, Noon and Night in Vienna’, the overture was designed to capture the attention of the audience and to set the scene for the play. The playful, light-hearted feeling of Von Suppé's overtures have led to them being used in a number of animated cartoons and the ‘Morning, Noon, and Night in Vienna’ Overture features as part of the Bugs Bunny cartoon ‘Baton Bunny’.

In a Camp of the Ancient Britons - Albert KetelbeyAlbert Ketèlbey, born in 1875,composed this tone picture in 1925 and dedicated to his friends in Weston-super-Mare. It is based on a dream he had when he visited the town, and depicts a battle fought in Worlebury Woods. The work begins with the Sacred Grove of the Druids, followed by: the Invocation before Battle, the March of the Ancient Britons, the Advance of the Roman Legions, the Battle and defeat of the Britons, and their Retreat. The Invocation theme then returns as a Waltz as if being played by a band on the seafront, bringing the listener back to the spirit of present day.

Concerto for Two Violins- Johann Sebastian BachBach composed his double violin concerto between 1717 and 1723 when he was the Kapellmeister at the court of Anhalt-Köthen, Germany. It was during the same period of his life that he composed the famous ‘Brandenberg Concerti’. Annabel Hancock and Jack Hanlon are the soloists this evening.

Overture to Lustspiel - Kéler BelaThe Hungarian composer Kéler Bela lived from 1820-1882, beginning his career as a violinist and military conductor. Later, throughout the 1870s, he toured Europe with his own orchestra, performing his own compositions. The overture to ‘Lustspiel’ (meaning Comedy) is the only part of the work that is still performed today.

Procession of the Sadar - Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov ‘Caucasian Sketches’ are a pair of orchestral suites, written in 1894 and 1896 respectively, and consist of four parts each. The ‘Procession of the Sardar’ is the finale to the first suite. The suites are heavily influenced by Georgian folk music that Ippolitov-Ivanov would have heard during his time spent in the Caucasus mountains. The word ‘Sardar’ is a title for a military commander formerly used in the region.

Programme Notes – Second Half

Sleigh Ride – Wolfgang Amadeus MozartOur junior orchestra will perform Mozart’s ‘Sleigh Ride’ which was composed in 1791. Sleigh rides were a popular winter pastime in Vienna during Mozart's life time. Tinkling bells were a part of the tradition, as well as the sound of the post horn. Mozart included both within his musical sleigh ride which borrows part of its melody from an old Austrian folk tune.

March of the Bowmen – Ernest CurzonErnest Frederic Curzon was born in London in 1899 and composed an extensive amount of light music. He studied a number of instruments as a child including violin, cello, piano and organ and some of his earliest compositions were performed before he was twelve years old. One of the most substantial of Curzon's orchestral compositions is the ‘Robin Hood Suite’, which ends with the rousing ‘March of the Bowmen’. The piece was first performed in 1937 by the BBC Symphony Orchestra and will be performed today by our junior orchestra.

Polar Express – Glen Ballard & Alan SilvestriOur junior orchestra will be performing music from the Christmas fantasy film ‘Polar Express’ which was released in 2004. The story features a young boy who is transported by the ‘Polar Express’ train to the North Pole in order to secure his belief in Father Christmas. The film's score was composed by Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard and is highly festive: listen out for the train whistle!

Christmas Concerto – Archangelo Corelli‘Concerto grosso in G minor’ by Arcangelo Corelli, known commonly as the Christmas Concerto, was commissioned by Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni and published in 1714. The concerto bears the inscription ‘Fatto per la notte di Natale’, meaning ‘Made for the night of Christmas’. Its composition date is uncertain, but there is a record of Corelli having performed a Christmas concerto as early as 1690. The Concerto will be performed today by the string section of our Senior Orchestra.

Chicago – John KanderThe musical ‘Chicago’ is themed upon corruption of the criminal justice system and looks at the concept of the ‘celebrity criminal’. The original Broadway production opened in 1975 and ran for 936 performances until 1977. Chicago opened in the West End in 1979 and holds the record for the longest-running American musical in West End history. A film adaptation of ‘Chicago’ was released in 2002 and won six Academy Awards , including Best Picture. Our Senior Orchestra will perform an arrangement which includes a number of musical highlights from the score, including ‘All that Jazz’, ‘Cell Block Tango’ and ‘Roxie’.
