Dear Families

What a storm we had on Monday! It was all hands on deck

yesterday as everyone bogged in tidying up and picking up branches,

paper and leaf litter. Your children were absolutely marvellous!

Unfortunately several trees on Ungaroo Road were hit by lightning and

some Pines along Deering St. The clean-up crew have been out assessing the

damage and beginning to remove damaged trees. We are awaiting an arborist to

assess the trees in the central nature playground.

Last week we enjoyed our inaugural BeYou Beginning of Year Welcome BBQ

with activities on the lawns of our schools. This was hugely popular with the

students and families from the three Westminster schools. I would like to say a

huge thank you to the BeYou committee and also to the local businesses and

community members who generously donated food and raffle prizes for the

afternoon. The three Westminster schools have committed to becoming BeYou

schools. All of our staff can access through the BeYou website resources and

strategies so that they have the knowledge to support our students to achieve

their best possible mental health. Families are also welcome to register with

BeYou https://beyou.edu.au to become a part of our BeYou Community.

First Assembly

Congratulations to Miss Larkman’s Year 3, Room 2 children for leading our first assembly for the year. The children sang a beautiful rendition of the song “The Best Day of My Life”, which epitomized the positive mindset we are developing at Westminster Junior PS. The children reminded us that through setting goals, hard work and practice we can achieve “The Best Day of My(our) Life”.

Class Communication

As a school we communicate with our families via a variety of methods; the

fortnightly newsletter, the school website, the school Facebook page, the newly

developed P&C Facebook page, class teachers’ notice boards, P&C meetings,

through letters, notes and as many other means as possible.

One form of communication that the class teachers really do value is the annual class parent meeting, which has been held throughout the last two weeks. Parents have expressed their appreciation in the opportunity to hear their child’s teacher discuss class and learning expectations and routines.

Parents and Citizens AGM

The P&C AGM is scheduled for Tuesday 17th March at 9am. It is very important that

we all go to this meeting because we need to support the valued work our

parents and citizens contribute to our three schools.

Student Leaders

Congratulations to the Faction Captains who were selected for a leadership sport’s position for 2020. This term they will be managing class sports equipment in the mornings. They are:

Avon; Ariah Crown-Andrews and Joyous Chaudhary.

Tuart; Harleen Dhanda and Rudhvah Vyas.

Swan; Violetta Dimer and Jonathan Dicker.

These roles form wonderful opportunities for teaching our children how to develop leadership skills.

Voluntary Contributions

Voluntary contributions are now due from all our families. If you would like to make a

direct deposit into the school bank account, the details are:

Mrs P’s Home Reading Tips

1. Set 10 minutes aside for home reading giving your undivided attention.

2. Talk about the cover, illustration and title of the book.

3. Break up challenging words into single sounds to sound it out. Often this helps to figure out new

words.

4. Find out the meaning of new words. For example; Google Dictionary

5. Check for understanding by talking about how the book links to your child’s life.

Oxford sight word Focus Books

Oxford sight word focus books has been sent home from Year 1 to Year 3 and Pre-Primary later dur-

ing the year. Here are tips on how to use the Oxford sight word book at home.

Listen to each word that your child can sight and read confidently.

If your child can read the word, place a tick () next to the word.

If your child can’t read the word, place a dot () next to the word.

The teacher will sign off the page before your child can move on to the next set of words.

If you have any questions or suggestions related to home reading or any other English related topics.

Please feel free to use the “Suggestion Box” placed in the front office or see me in room 9. The sug-

gestion box will be checked weekly to better support parents and families.

Happy reading!

Mrs P.

As parents it is important to understand the process behind home reading. As a mother of three children, I completely understand finding time can be challenging. Here are 5 simple steps to make home reading enjoyable and support your child’s reading development at the same time.

Our school needed some upgrade especially in the canteen. Our refrigerator broke down last year and the

Westminster Junior Primary School Principal; Andrea White managed to get us a 2nd hand refrigerator from

corporate organization. We have 2 rows small oven for school trading and catering. We don’t have a

computer to receive online orders and responding to emails. We have been struggling for some time now.

Last year, during our P&C general meeting with the school principals, Ms. White suggested to P&C to contact

our newly elected Liberal MP for Stirling, Vince Connelly. Coincidentally, within few days Gary the Principal of

Westminster Education Support Centre received an email from Vince’s office that they would like to engage

with the school and the community.

That email was forwarded to our P&C inbox. Meanwhile, our sports day was approaching and usually we

have Raffles to raise fund for the schools. Labor MP for Mirrabooka, Janine Freeman has been donating a lot

of raffle items for the past few years to Westminster Schools P&C. Secretary of Westminster Schools P&C;

Christina was instructed to send an email to Vince Connelly office to request for a raffles item donation. It all

begun from then.

Vince, PR representatives got back to us with 1 raffle prize which was Australia’s Prime Minister Scott

Morrison’s signed wine bottle. We decided to award it to Norman Gibbons who is our Westminster Schools

P&C Treasurer and member of P&C for the past 18 years. We arranged a visitation by Vince Connelly on

Sports day and showed him around the 3 Westminster schools.

We showed him the undercover area and canteen.

In addition, to 2 days school canteen trading, the canteen caters to Westminster Child and Parent Centre

events and ‘Fun in the Park’. ‘Fun in the park’ is for the Westminster school children and community held

twice in a school term. Our last Fun in the park was on 25th February 2020 at Matt Williams Reserve

Westminster. The canteen has been doing catering of Pikelets, Dips, Vegetables, Fruits and Muffin for the

event. Vince suggested us to apply for a grant under “Stronger Communities Programme” funding to upgrade

our canteen facilities. After all the paperwork, discussing with people from Federal Government Canberra, we

were awarded a grant of AUD$10,000 matching to the funds Westminster P&C have raised so far

AUD$10,000.Now, Westminster P&C has AUD$20,000 to upgrade the School canteen to Commercial

Refrigerator, Commercial Oven and Computer and Printer.

Attached is the picture of hardworking Westminster Schools P&C.

From L: Norman Gibbons – Treasurer, Christina Maria Soosa – Secretary, Liberal MP for Stirling, Vince

Connelly, Leah – Parent Helper, Natalie Krekora – President, Tania Haeusler – Vice President and Jenson.
