Westie Updates Vol. 2 No. 5 May 6, 2015
President’s Message Dear fellow WHWTCA members and friends, In this issue of the Westie Updates you will find lots of information to keep you current on the national club and regional club events! Please read through all of it so you will know what we have planned and where your help, support and participation may be needed. Your regional clubs and National club are offering numerous opportunities to support the integrity and future of the West Highland White Terrier. Look to see where you can become involved in the future of our breed. In addition you will find details about getting your ads in for our startup of the new westie Imprint! As we have said before, the success or failure of our very special magazine will rely heavily on the support of your advertising dollars. We think you will be pleased with the new format. Mark your calendars for the Roving in Houston in July!! This is going to be one of those not-to-be-missed occasions with a full schedule of events and shows!! Below you will find many details I hope many of our members are supporting the various regional specialties with their entries. Regional clubs work very hard to make these shows very special and we are nearly always guaranteed majors! Consider supporting these clubs and their efforts to keep these specialties a very important part of our year! In August the WHWTCA and the WHWTC of NO will be sponsoring a breed seminar at the Canfield Show grounds. This seminar will welcome potential judges, approved judges, breeders and exhibitors and will hopefully be the first of many around the country over the next year or two. The August seminar will be given by two well respected breeder/exhibitors; Dawn Martin and Lisa Pacheco. More information will be shared as details are firmed up. Please, if you have any questions or concerns, make a point of reaching out to either myself or one of our board members. We want to keep the lines of communication and the sharing of ideas at the forefront of our service to the club. My best to all,
Lee Lee Trudeau [email protected]

Included in this issue of Westie Updates are the details of the volunteers and their contact information General questions about the new Imprint should be sent to the Imprint Committee, Kenny Fodill, Kathy Farrell, Dawn Martin and Lee Trudeau if you do not see your answers in this issue.
The Imprint is coming…..the Imprint is coming!!! The following post was sent to the WHWTCA chat list by Mary Ann Neal, a longtime member from California and a past Yearbook Editor. Mary Ann expresses so well what we can all do to support the regeneration of the Imprint: “Just a few random thoughts about why and what you "advertise" in your national breed club magazine... As we've all figured out, the times they are a-changing. In the old days you advertised that new Champion or the Special you were hoping would win at the National. Some of us included our performance activities as well. Now we have an opportunity to showcase our beautiful Westies in a larger format. Oh Yes, do an ad for all the old reasons, but maybe consider one to celebrate that first special Westie, or fill a page with Puppy pictures because we all know how good those make us feel. If you are a Regional Club or Rescue, consider an ad page with photos to showcase one of your events... the possibilities are endless. I'm over the moon that pictures no longer have to be postage stamp sized and larger fonts will be easier to read. I'm looking forward to seeing what you all are up to with those Westies of yours! I know there are folks who don't like to brag, but celebrating the achievements shared with your Westie encourages others to try something new as well. That's how I got started in all this...”
Westie Imprint
information
The Board of the West Highland White Terrier Club of America has worked diligently to upgrade and preserve the Westie Imprint that we have all come to love and cherish. The new Imprint will be produced in a larger 8 X 10 format & will offer both outside & inside color pages. A lottery system was used to fill the preferred color positions in the inaugural Summer issue and a few remaining preferred inside color pages of the Fall and Winter issues. In addition to preferred color, regular Black and White advertising will also be accepted at a cost of $95 @ page.
The quarterly deadlines for submission of ads and articles for the publication are as follows: Summer May 31, Fall August 31 and Winter November 30. ** Additional winners of the inside color pages were drawn in order to fill any preferred pages in the Fall and Winter issues that are not taken by Roving or National Specialty winners. If you entered the Lottery you made a commitment to advertise in the upcoming Imprints, which is necessary to ensure the future of the Imprint. ** an additional charge of $50.00 will be assessed to any ad that are not submitted “camera ready” in a complete high resolution TIFF file. Full details will be available on the WHWTCA web site.

Versatile dog
program update!!!!
The Versatile Dog Program has been updated to incorporate additional titling activities, giving Westies more ways to earn the awards while maintaining a basic equivalence with the current system. The program now includes Therapy, Nosework, Flyball, Coursing, Barn Hunt and the optional titling classes in Obedience. The current point system was reviewed and the Rally and Obedience titles were adjusted to give distinction to the skills required for obedience. VDA awarded in 2015 will be based on the old system for titles earned up to July 31, 2015. All subsequent awards will be based on the new system. See next page for chart

Versatile Dog Award Rules:
o Points are calculated by category – For categories with multiple activities, this is the sum of the highest level plus one-half the points for the other activities in that category. Example: Dog has a UD, RAE, ThDD. All 3 titles are within the companionship category. UD is the highest level and counts for 8 points, RAE counts for 3 points (half of 6 points), and ThDD counts for 2.5 points (half of 5 points) for a total of 13.5 points for the category.
o Total Points is the sum of points for the five categories. o A Threshold Category is one with 3 or more points in a single activity. This
requires the dog to demonstrate proficiency in an activity to demonstrate versatility.
o A Championship, Earthdog title OR at least 7 total points in any category is required for all awards.
The Versatile Dog Award (VDA) requires at least one of the following:
3 categories and 9 points,
2 threshold categories and 10 points and at least 7 points in Conformation or Earthdog,
2 threshold categories and 12 points and at least 9 points in any category.
The Versatile Dog Excellent Award (VDX) requires at least one of the following:
4 threshold categories and 16 points,
3 threshold categories and 17 points and at least 7 points in Conformation or Earthdog or at least 9 points in any category.
The Master of Versatility (MV) requires at least one of the following:
5 threshold categories and 23 points,
4 threshold categories and 24 points and at least 7 points in Conformation or Earthdog or at least 9 points in any category,
3 threshold categories and 25 points and at least 7 points in Conformation or Earthdog or at least 9 points in any category.
The Master of Versatility 2 (MV2) requires at least one of the following:
5 threshold categories and 29 points,
4 threshold categories and 30 points and at least 7 points in Conformation or Earthdog or at least 9 points in any category.
The Master of Versatility (MV3) requires at least one of the following:
5 threshold categories and 35 points,
4 threshold categories and 36 points and at least 7 points in Conformation or Earthdog or at least 9 points in any category.
The Master of Versatility (MV4) requires at least one of the following:
5 threshold categories and 41 points.
Examples:
o Versatile Dog (VD) o 3 categories and 9 points from CH CD NAP or BN RN ThDN TD JE. The latter
shows how points combine within a category, 2 for the RN plus ½ for the BN and ½ for the ThDN.
o 2 categories and 10 points from CH ME. This shows how a high level accomplishment in Earthdog can be combined with just one other category.
o Versatile Dog Excellent (VDX) o 4 categories and 16 points from GCH RA OAP OJP RATO or CH RAE ThD NAJ
JE. The latter shows how points combine within a category, 6 for the RAE plus 2/2 for the ThD.
o Master of Versatility o 5 categories and 23 points from CH RA TDX AXP AJP JE
Fine Print: VD Awards will be awarded at the 2015 banquet based on the old system for titles earned up to July 31, 2015. All subsequent awards will be based on the new system.
o No VD Award based on the old rules will be retracted after the change. But some dogs may find they will have an easier or harder time earning their next award level.
Conformation Top 10 levels: o Level 5 is the top 10 dog or top 10 bitch in the calendar year "AKC TopDog
By Breeds using Breed totals" report. o Level 7 is the Top 10 Westies (inter-sex) in the calendar year "AKC TopDog
By Breed Using All-Breed Totals o Level 9 is the Top 10 All Terriers Dogs or Bitches in the calendar year "AKC
TopDog By Group Using All-Breed Total".
Earthdog 10+10 requires 10 extra SE legs & 10 extra ME legs not necessarily at the same test.
A dog that achieves these requirements while one or more of his owners were not members needs to earn at least one further title while all his co-owners are members.
All titles must be AKC titles to be counted except Nosework titles which must be NACSW titles
Members who do not choose to have AKC recognition of Therapy, Flyball and Barn Hunt titles, or whose Flyball or Therapy accomplishment predates AKC’s recognition, or who earn Nosework titles must provide written proof of the accomplishment including the dog’s AKC registered name and the date of the accomplishment.
Members must provide documentation for Conformation Top 10 accomplishments or for Earthdog 10+10 from AKC reports.
Members should notify the performance committee in writing or email when their dogs earn a VD Awards to be sure the Club Database is up to date.
WHWTCA Quality
Westie Program
WHWTCA Quality Westie Program I’m pleased and excited to announce a new event and title for Westies. The WHWTCA Board recently approved the Quality Westie (QW) program for implementation in 2015, with the goal that the first live event will be held at Montgomery in 2015. Quality Westie is meant to provide a new and useful way for Westie breeders and owners to recognize and document Westies that meet the breed standard, and enable breeders to focus on producing Westies with proper type and exhibiting proper temperament and soundness, and maintain and protect the future of Westies. The keys to the Quality Westie program are: WHO: Evaluation of whether a Westie meets the breed standard by a panel of 3 experienced and knowledgeable Westie breeders. WHAT: A written and signed document by the evaluators given to the owner, plus a certificate from the WHWTCA for those Westies who pass. WHEN: Multiple evaluation events/year, hosted by the national club or regional clubs. WHERE: Separate venue and date from any AKC conformation show. WHY: Simple, useful method to recognize quality Westies for breeders and owners. NOTE: This entire process is held within the WHWTCA, and no other organization is involved at all. The evaluation is a NON-COMPETITIVE event. Why is this event created? There is evidence of growing frustration with the time, cost and complexity of the current competitive process of identifying quality dogs. Many members feel that there is undue emphasis on presentation and showmanship, and a decreasing focus on breeding to the standard. Several other breeds have developed formal, non-competitive breed standard assessments and titles. Arguably, one of the best and well-documented programs is the Certificate of Conformation Assessment (CCA) program of the Golden Retriever Club of America, which was established in 2004. Approximately 2,265 Goldens achieved the CCA title as of the end of 2013. There is a wealth of information on the CCA program at www.grca.org/events/CCA. The Quality Westie program is largely based on the Golden CCA program.
Who will be the QW Evaluators? 9 to 12 experienced and knowledgeable Westie breeders will be in the initial group
of evaluators. All evaluators must be members of the WHWTCA for a minimum of 10 years and
have bred at least 5 Westie litters. All evaluators must have finished at least 1 Westie by themselves to an AKC
championship. At least 1 member of every 3 person evaluation panel must also be a current AKC
approved Westie breeder-judge. It’s possible that there will be two (or even all three) Westie breeder-judges on the evaluator panel.
After the initial year of QW events, more evaluators could be nominated by club membership. The top 12 vote getters would be selected as the evaluator group for future events.
The WHWTCA Board selects the evaluation panel for Montgomery. Panels for QW events at the Roving and any regional specialties are selected from the approved evaluator group by the hosting clubs.
How does the evaluation process work? 1. Evaluation event & entry form advertised in Imprint, website, chat room, and
social media. 2. Entry form and fee sent to WHWTCA. At Venue: 3. 3 tables in evaluation space; 3 dogs evaluated simultaneously by the three
evaluators. 4. Each evaluator examines each dog individually, and records on score sheet while
evaluating dog. 5. After dogs are evaluated for structure, the 3 dogs are gaited individually and
together & evaluated for movement and “mingled” for temperament. Movement and structure are very closely related; generally, you don’t have good movement and poor structure and vice versa.
6. Dogs are excused from evaluation space. Evaluators then sit at a table & write their evaluation of each dog on the score sheets in triplicate, and sign the sheets.
7. Copy of written & signed evaluations given to owner. Copies also to evaluator and WHWTCA. If dog has passed, QW certificate from WHWTCA mailed later.
8. Next group of 3 dogs enters evaluation space. 9. Estimate that evaluation process for each group of 3 dogs will take ~ 45 minutes: - 10 minutes table evaluation for each dog x 3 evaluators. - 5 minutes for gaiting and “mingling”. - 10 minutes for evaluators to complete evaluation sheets. 10. Estimate that 24 dogs could be evaluated in a one day session (9 am - 12, 1 pm – 4
pm). 3 dogs/session x 8 sessions. Note: Dogs entered are to be at least 18 months old. Dogs are to be presented neat and clean. No need for show grooming. No foreign material in coat. No professional handlers, unless they are the sole owner of the dog and have been so for at least a year. How are the dogs scored? To achieve Quality Westie, dog must obtain a score of 75 or greater from three different evaluators (can be from more than one event). No category can be scored less than a 5 to attain the passing score of 75.
10 categories to be scored; 10 points in each category: 1. General appearance 2. Size, proportion, balance, substance (incl. bone) 3. Head: skull, muzzle, ears, eyes, expression 4. Bite: 6 incisors upper and lower, level or scissors bite 5. Neck, topline, ribs, chest, tail and tail set 6. Forequarters: shoulders, upper arms, elbows, front angulation, front legs and feet 7. Hindquarters: thighs, hocks, rear angulation, feet 8. Coat and color 9. Gait 10. Temperament Quality Westie Event Planning: The goal is to have the first live QW event at Montgomery, 2015. The QW event will be held either on Wednesday of Montgomery week, or on Monday (the day after the Montgomery show).. Much of 2015 will be spent in educating and clarifying the breed standard to the entire club membership, plus evaluator training and consensus-building (to try to reach as much agreement as possible on category weightings and scoring). Key Benefits of the Quality Westie Program: 1. Provides an opportunity for a very significant focus, clarification and
understanding of the standard of the WHWT for all WHWTCA members as well as owners of Westies.
2. Provides the opportunity for all participants (especially breeders) to get an in-depth written and signed expert opinion on how their dog measures up to the standard from three very experienced and knowledgeable Westie breeders (including at least one AKC approved Westie breeder-judge among the evaluators).
3. Provides an excellent opportunity to produce camaraderie among participants and attendees outside of the ring. Meet with fellow breeders and discuss potential breedings, what you need to improve your line, progeny, etc.
Summary: The major reason for developing the QW program was to encourage much more emphasis and focus on producing Westies that truly meet the standard. Please note that the QW program is NOT meant to change or replace the AKC conformation shows or the Champion title. People are free to pursue showing in conformation shows the same as always. QW simply provides an additional way to identify quality Westies for those people who prefer the method afforded by the QW program. The QW program is not perfect, but I hope it’s a positive move towards improving the breed. I hope that future additions/improvements to the program will include health, and a stronger, more explicit measure of good temperament.

Northern Ohio Westie Specialty July 30th-August 2nd
It’s less than 90 days until Canfield, the Northern Ohio Westie specialty! Maybe the weather will warm up by then. As I’m writing this it is the end of April and 41 degrees! We have two days of sweeps, Saturday judged by Kathy Latz and Sunday by Lee Trudeau. Four days of majors judged by Ann Katona, Lydia Hutchinson, Ken Kauffman, and Randy Weckman.
We are hosting next year’s Roving, so you should attend this year to get a taste of what’s in store. Breed Seminar: In addition the WHWTCNO and the WHWTCA will be hosting a breed seminar on Saturday after BIS judging presented by breeder/exhibitors Dawn Martin and Lisa Pacheco (members of the Judges Education Committee). More details to follow about the seminar and it will be open to potential judges, current judges, westie breeders and exhibitors (including handlers). All westie enthusiasts welcome!!
