Thanks!

As we enter the last month or so before the AGM, it is appropriate to look back over the various events of the Club year and thank the various people who contributed to their success.

Thanks to Club members who participated in the organised runs, starting with Spiddal in December, through to Castlebar in August – not forgetting a couple of unforgettable safaris into Co. Clare. Your participation in these runs enhances everybody’s enjoyment of Club activities. Of course these events don’t organise themselves! Thanks are especially due to the people who organised the various runs.

Thanks also to the members who organised and worked on the restoration of the TR6 for the Charity Raffle. It was a huge, and highly successful, un-dertaking. Thanks also to the many members who sold the raffle tickets, and those who bought them. (see report on raffle on page 8).

And finally, a big ‘thank you’ to our sponsors. Paul Harty of Car Parts Ware-house took over sponsorship of this year’s WestRun. This is a new business venture for Paul, and we wish him well. Eugene Dalton of Corrib Oil spon-sored his second annual Corrib Oil Run in August. And Tom Heavey of Irish Vintage Scene magazine – another new business venture – sponsored our June Bank Holiday run to Birr Castle. These sponsorships enable the Club to hold down the cost of entry to the sponsored events.

It is also appropriate to thank Donie Dillane of Top Part – our main sponsor from 1999 to 2005. Top Part came on board when Club finances were in a less robust state than they are today. The support was terrific, and when the time came for Top Part to focus their sponsorship elsewhere, they gave us almost 12 months notice, so that we had plenty of time to source a new sponsor for WestRun 2006.

*********************************** Johnny Moloney, R.I.P. Dungarvan, Co. Waterford.

A tribute by John Walsh, Circular Road, Galway. It is with sadness that I heard of the sudden death of Johnny Moloney from Dungarvan in County Waterford on 7th August last. I first met Johnny about 1980 in Ennistymon or Portlaoise at a vin-tage rally. He was involved in the motor industry all his life. After a very short time speaking with him, it was apparent he had a huge dept of knowledge about cars, never happier than when chatting about engines, me-chanical safety and the availability of spare parts. He was a gentleman, generous with his spare time and mechanical expertise and held in great esteem by all who knew him. He believed in old-world politeness, courtesy and integrity. Johnny was very helpful to the WVVMC in the early years of our club. Johnny, The Accordion Man, played music for us on the Friday night and Saturday afternoons of many of our Summer rallies. He was well-known in all the towns in the west of Ire-land. He was a great accordion player and everyone was well entertained by him on our sunny (well almost always sunny) July weekends. Johnny and his wife, Peggy, travelled the length and breadth of Ireland to vintage car rallies, static displays, fair days and many other vintage occasions. Unfortunately, WVVMC club members did not hear of John’s passing until after the funeral and were unable to attend. The vintage scene in Ireland has lost a great friend. On behalf of myself, my family and all in the WVVMC, I would like to offer my deepest sympathy to Peggy and the extended Moloney family. Johnny will be sadly missed.. Go ndéanfaidh Dia tróchaire ar a anam dílis. John Walsh Galway.

RESTORING A BEETLE By Patrick Breslin (member no. 214)

At the end of 1999 I flew into Sydney on a working holiday visa, like many people my age I was looking for a year of travel, adventure and craic. Unlike most other backpackers I had another plan. I was hoping to work enough to afford an old VW Bug and ship it home. As things turned out I ended up staying for two and a half years, but managed to get my car and bring it home. Both my father and grandfather had owned Bugs going back to the early fifties. My father’s first car was a brand new Bug in the late sixties. Australia, being a former British colony with a warm climate, is a great place to source vintage cars, and with all cars right hand drive this makes things all the eas-ier for importing. At the start of 2001 I reckoned I needed a car and by now I had saved enough to start the search. With the help of a good mate, Kevin, we drove all over the city a few Saturdays and after seeing all types of bugs, we came across a very clean and original 1968 1500 cc. This was one of the last years the Beetle still had it’s classic looks, later cars had a longer front end and padded dashboard. Also this was a car built in Australia before manufacturing was moved to South America. The seller is worth looking over as much as the car itself and when we arrived at the house, we saw the Beetle was garaged up with an immaculate 1930s Norton Motor-cycle, both were clean and shiny, and obviously looked after with much care. The car had been owned by this guy’s daughter who travelled to University in it and they were only the second owners from new. The first owner had the car for over 30 years, and it came with it’s original warranty card dated 20.08.68, as well as ser-vice stamps and receipts up until 1976. We completed the deal and after a few false starts managed to get the car out of the garage and up the slope to the street. I hadn't driven many Beetles before and the car took a bit of getting used to. The journey back to the apartment took us across the 6 lane Sydney Harbour Bridge which was the most nervous drive I've ever had. Fortunately our apartment came with underground car space which spared the car from the torrential rain storms that batter the City. I drove the car for the next year mostly at weekends and it never let me down. The guy I bought if from put me in touch with a garage who did the servicing for him, which was a great help. Figgis Motors was an amazing place, a small family run business which only worked on Beetles and Kombis. The first time I arrived there I didn't think much of the run down back street garage. But when this elderly couple pulled up, I relaxed. They were driving the most immaculate early 60s bug I've ever seen, complete with slop-ing lights. They were friendly and owned the garage for 40 odd years, their son ran the business and they had retired, but still came in most days to help. The father pottered in the workshop and his wife made the tea and did the books. Their son also drove a beautifully restored Bug as did all the mechanics, and in the back of the garage they had an early 50s split rear window bug, also fully restored. The first day I called they were in the process of building a home made Ute (pick-up truck) from a cut down Bug. This was a one off for a friend who farmed sheep in country New South Wales, and wanted something he could drive off road and throw a few ewes into the back. They did fantastic work on the car for a very reasonable price. And kept me motoring every weekend.

RESTORING A BEETLE (CONTINUED) At the end of 2001, the economy in Australia was on a down slope and I got laid off from work, my visa was attached to the job and I was now faced with returning home. I had mentioned to my father about bringing the car back home and he didn't believe that it was a good idea, however after coming out for a holiday and seeing the car, he couldn't believe the condition of it. Having being used to seeing old Bee-tles in this country rusted to nothing, seeing a car with so little corrosion was a nov-elty. I looked into the possibility of shipping the car and the cost was much cheaper than I had imagined, costing less than $3,000 (E1,700), including insurance. We had all the window rubbers replaced as the hot climate had cracked them and they were prone to leaking, and the endless rain in Donegal was going to be too much for the car, and would make shipping the car back pointless. The car had to be power cleaned in detail as this was at the height of Foot and Mouth which could delay it at customs as the shipping went to Liverpool first, then across the Irish see before going by road from Belfast to Dublin. I dropped the car to the shipping company with the fuel tank empty, and it was packed into a con-tainer and off on the sea. I headed off travelling through Australia, New Zealand and Asia, hoping to time my return to Ireland with the car, however bad weather had delayed the shipping and it took over 4 months to get the car back to Dublin. Once the car arrived back I set off to the capital to pick it up, not knowing what to expect. The journey had been fine and the only damage the car suffered was a broken hand-brake cable and door mirror, probably as a result of heavy seas. I had fully expected to have to get a tow from the freight company, however after turning the starter 3 times it fired and hasn't stopped since. After finding somewhere that sold leaded petrol I filled it up and drove to west Donegal without a single problem. Even got stopped out of curi-osity by the Gardai in Monaghan. The car has been in Donegal since and driven regularly by myself and my father, however after two winters it was starting to look a little tired. So we are now in the processing of restoring it, having stripped the car it has now been re-sprayed in it’s original Lotus White and we are now in the process of sourcing original parts to put it back together. The hope is to have the car on the road for next summer and possi-bly down to Galway for West Run 2007. If any members know of an old bug in a field or shed somewhere which may have some suitable parts please get in touch, all items considered.

WestRun 2006 Once again, WestRun has come and gone. This year's event was the most successful ever with many more peo-ple attending all the functions and an increase in the num-ber of cars taking part - this was due in no small way to the effort and commitment of the run director, John Folan. There have been many very complimentary messages re-ceived by the club during the past two months. .

On the Friday afternoon, a large number of cars from all over Ireland, and many from abroad, turned up at the Spanish Arch for a very successful static display. The Triumph TR6, which was being raffled for charity, was on display and as well as being the source of very good ticket sales, really caught the eye with it's gleaming paintwork in the beautiful bright sunshine which brought a carnival atmosphere to the Spanish Arch. WestRun 2006 was officialy launched by the Mayor of Galway City, councillor Niall Ó Brolachán. Later that evening, a very large crowd gathered at the Clarinbridge Court Hotel to view the cars, renew acquaintances, chat about cars and take part in the pre-rally reception which included plenty nice food and excellent music for dancing from Sean Walsh and his band, as well as some caberet items from the participants. Right through the afternoon and evening, registration of cars and participants was taking place under the control and guidance of Tasmin Folan and Nataliya Kolosovska. Just after 10.00am on a rainy Saturday morning almost 200 cars from all over Ireland and many from abroad began to depart the carpark of the Clarinbridge Court Hotel and headed off through Clarinbridge, Kilcolgan, Kinvara, Carron, Kilfenora and Ennistymon before reaching a wet and windy Lahinch in Co. Clare. Even though the weather was quite wet, this did not deter a large number of peo-ple from participating in the new-type quiz which again this year consisted of a town treasure hunt. The local committee awarded prizes to the owners of cars which "just caught the eye" in Lahinch. Then it was back to the Clarinbridge Court Hotel where Mass was celebrated by Fr. Tommy Marrinan and the prizegiving banquet took place. The Mayor of County Galway, Councillor Michael Mullins and his wife Mary were guests of honour for the evening. The guest list also included Superintendent Martin Lee and his wife as well as the club's two honorary members, Phil Denson and Jimmy Francis and their wives, Margaret and Peggy. The annual club awards were pre-sented for outstanding service to the club. Music for dancing was provided by Bros Walsh and his band from Crossmolina in Co. Mayo. The Sunday morning session in the bar in the Clarinbridge Court Hotel was once again a great success with over 100 people turning out for a chat, music and danc-ing, a light lunch and then the annual goodbyes. Music this year was provided by Ray O'Donoghue, and Bobby Stack from Foulksmills in County Wexford and now a regular at WestRun.

As you are probably all aware, 31st of December is when membership is due for renewal for all members. The many events run by the club are supported directly by your mem-bership fees and of the money collected during the year, every single euro is ploughed straight back into the club. Your membership allows us to organise each of the many events and runs throughout the year. Our club is a very successful club with a very strong membership of 193 fully paid up members. Unfortunately due to personal reasons I can-not continue as the Membership Director beyond this year’s term and therefore ask each of you to consider putting yourselves forward at the upcoming AGM. The role of the membership secretary is to process all membership applications and re-newals and co-ordinating the list of paid up members with the communications secretary. As part of the hand-over this year the newly elected Membership Director will be pro-vided with pre-printed membership cards as well as an excel spreadsheet laid out for the 2007 membership year. I urge all members to consider participating actively in the running of the club. Members who cannot attend the AGM later in the year who would consider playing a more active role either as Membership Director or any of the other positions within the club should contact any of the current Directors and declare their availability.

A series of articles aimed at improving driving skills has been put together by the Chairman of the W.V.V.M.C., Mr. Bill Fennell.

Improve Your Driving

SAFETY BELTS Numerous members have in recent times asked me about the wearing of seat belts, with particular emphasis on classic and vintage vehicles. In this article I will endeav-our to set out the relevant requirements. Safety Belts. Safety belts must be fitted to every passenger vehicle and station wagon having pas-senger accommodation for eight passengers or less, exclusive of the driver, as well as goods vehicles not exceeding 1524 kgs. (30 cwts.) in weight unladen, first registered on or after 1st June, 1971. Electrically propelled goods vehicles which are not capa-ble of exceeding 40 kms. (24 m.p.h.) on a dry level road under normal atmospheric conditions. Essentially this means that any veteran vintage or classic car first registered before 1st June, 1971, does not come under the ambit of these regulations. Vehicles requiring safety belts must be fitted with a safety belt for use by the driver of the vehicle and a safety belt for use by each passenger occupying a forward-facing front seat. A safety belt will either be a diagonal belt, a three point belt or a harness belt, which must be securely attached to the anchorage points provided in the vehicle. Wearing of Front Safety Belts. When a vehicle requiring safety belts is being used on a public road, the driver and a person occupying a front seat will wear a safety belt, with the following exceptions when the regulations will apply:- (a) a licensed taxi or hackney driver while driving the vehicle being used as a small public service vehicle. (b) a driving instructor while giving driving instruction. (c) a driver tester while conducting a test of competency.

YOUR VIEWS

(d) a driver while reversing a vehicle. (e) a Garda or member of the Defence Forces in the course of their duty as such member. Provision for Children A driver of a vehicle to which these regulations apply shall not permit a person to occupy a front seat – (i) when the person is under 17 years and is over 150 cms. (4’11’’) in height unless the person is wearing a safety belt. (ii) where a person is under 12 years and is under 150 cms. (4’11’’) in height unless a means of restraint (baby chair, etc.) for the safety of the person is used. Wearing of Rear Safety Belts. Since the 1st January, 1993, a person occupying a forward facing seat, not being a front seat, (a front facing rear seat), will wear a safety belt or an appropriate child restraint. The child restraint will be suitable for the age of the child, and will, where necessary necessitate the use of a child seat. This regulation also will not apply to any veteran, vintage or classic car.

THE 2003 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING RECENT EVENTS

Gort Show Over fifty cars, thirty tractors and a number of static machines took part in the vintage display at Gort Show on Sunday 6th August. Many of the car owners were members of the WVVMC and there was a good attendance also by members of the Clare Club. Sergio Magnetti and David Fennell had the TR6 on display under an attractive gazebo and there was a good sale of tickets for the Charity Project. The vintage owners exchanged information with one another and many of them also visited other sections of the Show, including , horse & pony classes, dog show, indoor exhibits, poultry classes and trade stands. All were treated to a meal provided by Gort ICA with the compliments of the Show Company. There were prizes for the best turned-out car, tractor and machine and the winners were Jim Barrow, Ennis, Francis Linnane, Gort and James Ruane, Corofin, Co Clare respectively. Many of the drivers had earlier taken part in a sponsored car & tractor run for the benefit of Gort ICA Hall Re-building Fund. The drivers were treated to a very welcome cup of tea by members of the ICA before the start of the run. The cars took a very scenic run by the edge of The Burren and the trac-tors took a shorter trip taking in the ancient monastery of Kilmacduagh. On their return to Gort, they all paraded to the Show at the Community Centre.

The Autumn Run to Enniskillen There was much disappointment amongst many club members who had their entries for this annual run refused by the organising committee, due to new regulations where constraints on numbers were strictly enforced. How-ever, some members took a chance and turned up on the day and were al-lowed take part without any difficulty while other members just drove to En-niskillen and did not take part in the run but thoroughly enjoyed the local atmosphere. The club wishes to acknowledge the great effort of Joe O’Neill in his meticulas preparation for this event and the fact that it was fully booked well in advance is testament to the great popularity of this annual run. It is hoped that the restrictions can be relaxed somewhat for next year’s event.
