Return to the Hillby Jo hn King

Some hard negotiating, not tomention gentle persuasion, sawthe VCC return to the gentleslopes of the Chelsea SugarRefinery's private road in Marchfor the first time in 4 1/ 2 years , toenjoy a day of motorsport in th emost attractive surroundings to befound at any hillclimb site in NewZealand .

Such an ev en t has to ha ve aname, of course, so the WaitemataBran ch qui ckly settled on Ch elseaWALSH (Waitemata Annual LocalSealed Hillclirnb] , and anyresemblance to that of the oldestcontinuo us motor ing event in th ewo rld was purely inte ntional. On eof th e terms of th e use of theproperty was that as littl e noisesho uld be mad e as possibl e , inorde r not to upset th e neighb ours,so Chi ef Scrutineer Erni eWilli am s ca refully ch eckedexha us t systems as w ell as th emore usual mechanical points.Seen in pr evious years , butspecifically exclude d thi s tim e ,we re me mbe rs of the ref iner ysoc ial club, so th e day wasmercifull y free of th ose dri ver swho habitually hurl un suitablemode rns up th e hill , and th ehandful of spec ta tors we re mostlyfamily and frien ds of thecompe titors .

This is the Vintage Car Club, and th e entry was notable for itsconce ntra tion on just thatcatego ry . Of th e 19 compe tingve hicles, fully 14 we re ve teran orvintage, tw o mor e we re postvintage , and only three came fromth e post war peri od . Most of thebe tte r spo rting marques took part

Talb ot , Dela ge, Sunbeam ,Riley , MG , Bentley , Jaguar ,Vau xhall, and Sizaire-Naudin and th e branch 's 93 (at last count)Chevrolets were represented byTo ny Gairdner's Superior model.Other minority makes wereSinger , Ansald o, and Austin ,

while the motorcycl es came fromthe AJS, [arnes, Rex Acm e, andHarl ey-David son stab les.

Som e 25 drivers (and onepassenge r) compe ted in or onth ose 19 ca rs and bikes , with anumber of fa the r-and-son du elsgoing on in the McN air, [a rnieson ,and [on es famili es. The mostcomplica ted combina tion wa s the[on ses , with hu sband/wi fe/father /son/mo the r seen together or singlyabo ut the Riley 9 and Harl eyDavi dson , but th e Beesleybrothers we re easier to so rt out,and spoilng the symme try a bitwas Bob Massey w ho ad mitted tono re lationship wi th To nyGa ird ne r, but drove th e Chev roletjust a frac tio n fas ter.

Nobody see ms to hav emeasured th e hill , so th e tim esca n' t be tran slat ed int o av eragespee ds, and the fact that th e startline has bee n moved since th eprev ious even ts makes anycompar ison with past yea rssom ewhat meani ngless. Still, BillShiells punted som ebody else'sJaguar XK120 up th e hill in 33.92seconds as an ind icat ion ofsomething 0 ': othe r , w ith somesignif icance being attached to thefac t that his fastest tim e was onhis last run, w he n not all sixcy linde rs were func tioning to thefull. Th e Ch elsea ven ue really ishard to beat. Rem ember th e days (he says, allnostalgic-like) wh en the Vint ageCar Club didn 't tak e itsel f soseriously? Instead of driving aboutin parad es , with th e status symbolresplende nt in extra -shiny paint, white side walls, and pet nam eenscrolled on the trunk, not tomention the occupants dr ess ed infunny hats, th e vintagent of acouple of decad es ago drove hisca r for the sheer fun of it. In thespirit of camarad eri e , everybodyenjoyed driving eve rybody else' scars as well , and a vintageweekend was likely to includedos sin g down in a village hall indubious comfort for a night,

If th at strikes a chord ofrem embrance som ewher e insideyou , th en fear not, for at lea st oneBranch still has th e basics ofvintage motoring very much III

mind. Waitemata , regarded asreb els by som e, is a group ofenthusiasts who firmly believe indriving their car s for the sport of

it, with a certain emphasis on(relati ve) sp eed as well as th egas tro nomic side of things.

Th e rec ent Second AnnualSpeed Week end gav e a gooddem onstration of what it 's allabout. Waitem ata Bran ch hiredthe Puk ekoh e circuit on 14 Aprilfor a day of driving rapidly incircles , th en repaired to GlenMurray for a night of festivityand, it is rumoured , an hour ortwo of sleep in the local hall, andcapped it all with a hillclimb onth e well-known Marshall Roadthe following day .

Keith Cutten's death a couple ofdays earlier was th e cause ofmuch regr et and th e absence ofso me stalwarts from Pukekohe athis fun eral for som e of the day ,but the rest of the competitors hada good tim e on the club circuit.Part of th e attraction is always th esp eculation over what RonRoyc roft will bring out next , andthis year he turned up in a Ford

10-engined 3-wheeler Morgan ,accompa nied by Bert Ha rris in aReliant deliv ery truck of similarbut revers e configuration. " Wecould both get in the Morgan, butthere wa s nowher e to put thetucker-box, " said Bert, whichexplained it all.

Th e day's racing went well ,with the Aus tin 7 cranksha ftconfounding the McNairs andremaining intact , and althoughone or two drivers took to thegrass, nothing drast ic happen ed.One-third of the Branch's Bugatti swas running extremely well ,along with about 1/93rd of th eChevrolets, but no Rileys wereseen. Among the motorcycles, nobody could catch Erni eWilli am s on on e or other of hisAJSs, but when his opposition allran out of petrol and thechequer ed flag man went and hid ,bets wer e tak en as to how lon g hewould remain circulating be forebeginning to suspect something.

By the end of the racing ther ewa s still much daylight left , so

people filled in the time byrushing around either circuit inone another's cars. Passengerrides in John Hearne's Type 23were popular, as were drives, ineither seat, in the Morgan(tremendous fun if you ignored allthe threshing action a few inches

abaft the beam] , and also the soleAmerican representative.

Not exactly bright and early, butdefinitely before lunchtime, activity started at Marshall Roadthe following day. Despite delayscaused by faulty electroniccommunication equipment - themanual-visual system and redflags worked much better - sevenruns were held in conditions thatranged from fitful sun to drizzle.Ron Roycroft took advantage ofthe road's proximity (anybody

running out of brakes at the top ofthe run and keeping going aminute or two would end up in hisbottom shed among the sportybits) to bring out another third ofthe Branch's Bugattis, althoughthe Type 23 was hors de combatwith a flat battery. Ron managed41.18 seconds in his Type 35 onthe 1.0 km hill , compared with51.20 in the Morgan .

FTD of 38.71 went to PeterBenbrook in the V8 Special, evenif his experimenting with aircraftcarrier tricks with wires justbefore the finish wasn'tuniversally popular and causedGerald Watson, the official timer ,to set a new sitting long-jumprecord. Gerald would like itpointed out that his own time of60 .10 in somebody else'sChevrolet at the end of the dayhappened to be the slowest bysome margin .

As vintage weekends go, it wasone of the better ones, andfollowed closely on a highlysuccessful Chelsea WALSHhillclimb. Where does a branch gofrom here? There's rumour of aweek or two inactivity before thenext outbreak of Waitemata'sproper vintage motoring, but restassured that the smallest Branchlacks nothing in enthusiasm. 0

At our In te rnati ona l Rall y in1980 at Rotor ua , some membersof the Sport ing Car Club of SouthAus tra lia we re promo ting a bigrally in 1984 to be he ld in th eBa rossa Valley near Ade laide . Our sma ll part y of four had afew da ys to look at Adelaide andnearby coun try . Th e people wefound to be genera lly ve ryfriendly, esp ecially w he n th eyknew we were Kiwis. The stree ts,roa ds and public places wer ealmos t complete ly free of theubiqui tous litt er that we see in ourown country . Th ere w ereseveral stories of trials ,tribulations and sheer luck ingetting to th e rally but how's thisfor a sample . A 1928 MorrisCommercial towing a ca ravanthrew a rod through the block . Aspare rod was on board and withthe help of a local welder , draggedaway from the pub, they rescued aFord Zephyr piston from a wreckin the local tip, fitted it, patchedthe hole with a flattened beer can, rivets and some selastic. Sevenhours aft er the bang the car wasrunning again and that includedbeing towed into town . .

The competition side of the rallywas simple and should haveproduced a rash of winners exceptthat most entrants seemed to bemor e interested in stopping forelevenses and other socialisingthan tim ekeeping. A few that didbother with tim e keeping seemedto tak e it all rather seriously to theextent that one fellow wasreport ed to be in tears whenlodging a complaint one day . Inthe event his complaint wasjustified as apparently themarshals had decided to shift thefinal control a mile or so and notboth ered to alter the E.T.A.s of thevehicles. Each morning of fourcompe tition days, entrants rolledup from 9am wh en ready , clockedout and were clocked in again atlunch time about 50 miles distant, having an allowance of 15minutes for comfort stops, sightseein g and whatever. Allint ersections were well describedtogeth er with the exact mileage ,although on one day theorganisers had assumed a line ofleas t deviation tha t was somewha tdoubtful and had some car s doingsom e extra mileage . speed, only the occasional qu eueformed behind a slow veter an .

The first two lunch stops wereat the ovals of Clare and Eudundawhich gave us good opportu nitiesto chat and look at vehicles. Th ethird was a beautiful gree n parkon the banks of the Murray atMannum with the paddle boatMurray River Queen as a backdr op while the last competitionday took us to Birdw ood Millmuseum , with its collections torival MOTAT or Ferrymead. Afeature of each day 's run were thegroups of school children wavingand cheering with all their mightat each of the many schools wepassed.

The runs back in the afternoonwere free but a route wasprovided to give a change ofscene. Friday gave a change ofweather too. A widespreadthunderstorm brewed up anddumped its load over the districton closed and open cars alik e.Arthur Evans was riding in 1909Itala with a nice (on a fine day )raceabout body. He reckons thatin all his motorcycling days he hasnever been so wet , with even hiswallet bein g filled with water. Hecould not see forward and with nowindscreen doubted if the youngdriver could either. We had30mms of rain in about half anhour. Fortunately we reachedcamp before the downpour . Asimultaneous noise and flash likea 25 pounder going off outside ourcabin was reported by witnessesto have been a fireball explodingin the adjacent oval. The weatherabated a little on Saturday for th econcours judging at Hein emanPark , Tanunda, but did threatenin the afternoon and gave way tothunder as an accompaniment tothe pr izegivin g. Rain and windovernigh t played havoc with thebig top and by Sunday break fastsome pegs were lifted with thewind still looking for weak spots.A con cert ed effort by officials andentrants cleared the pr eviousnight 's debris, glasses, bottl es ,plates, tables, cha irs , the lot justbefor e two of the big centre polesfell ripping the canopy in two

places . We didn 't see how th ey gotit down as we went on toRoseworthy College to what wasmeant to be a grand final day withmany one-ma ke and othermot oring clubs from Adelaide anddistricts parti cipating. Because ofthe weather most Adelaideentrants elected to go homeinstead while int erstate entrantsstarted the ir long journeyhom eward . For a littl e while thesun shone , the wind dropped andwe were able to inspect the 50 orso extra cars that had come out,but were pelt ed with rain and hailsqualls while qu eueing for abarbecue lunch (the cooks were inan old shed). Th e next dayAdelaide suffered quite badlyfrom the wind and after on e of thecaravans was turned over the clubabandoned ferrying out the extravans from Coulthard Park.Organisers and entrants wereind eed fortunate that the stormhad not come a few days earlier.

Swaggies had no trouble gett ingrid es in entrants' cars. If notprearranged over br eak fast or anoggin the night before a shortwait at the start was all that wasrequired . With few exceptions theAussies were ve ry friendly andwilling to be hospitabl e . I hop e wecan demonstrate the same degreeof friendliness and hospitality atPan Pacific '86, as there is everyappearance of the re bein g a recordturnout from across the Tasman.Given that a lot of int er est wasgenerated by the wine andexcitment of a big rally th ere wasstill much genuine interest.

The low cost local wine, theKellerminster sin gers andNuriootpah oompah band gotthings off to a good sta rt the firstnight and produced a number ofsore heads on Monday , with on eKiwi suffe ring badly un til a bite ofbreakfast revived him . A jazznight on Monday was wellreceived . Th e Marananga andTanunda brass bands on Thursdayand Friday we re fine musicianswhile the 5AA big ban d pr oducedsom e good music in the GlenMiller , Jimmy Dors ey style onSaturday .

Commemorating100 Years ofMotoringPart Four - A Lady, a Lad, and the Law.

by Leith Newell

In February 1901 theChristchurch motoring pressreported that there were fourmotor cars in Canterbury however , there was a fifth in thedistrict. Just when it arrived is notcertain although it was reportedlybrought out when the ownerarrived from the U.K. A dailynewspaper ran the followingadvertisement in early March."Motor car for sale, latestimprovements, owner selling onaccount unsuitability of locality .Apply No Press Office".

LADY DRIVEROn April 19, 1901 the same

paper reported " Yesterday thenovel sight of a lady driving a fourpassenger motor car through thestreets of Christchurch attractedconsiderable attention . The easeand skill with which the car washandled while driving through thecrowded thoroughfares showedthat the lady possessed theconfidence and dexterity of anexpert. On Wednesday, Mr andMrs Wycliffe Goodwin, to whomthe motor belongs drove fromtheir station at Glenroy toChristchurch, a distance of 60miles, covering the distance in afew hours , the lady doing theste ering during the journey." MrsWycliffe Goodwin may claim tobe the first woman driver inChristchurch, but readingbetween the lines this seems tohave been a clever piece ofsalesmanship. Although neithername nor make were mentionedin the March advertisement.. " unsuitability of locality", it

PAGE EIGHTEEN

can be assumed that it referred tothe BENZ Velo which the WycliffeGoodwins had brought out withthem from England to the stationthey leased briefly, 'Rockwood'near Glenroy. To reach thisstation in the Malvern Hills, inaddition to several small fords ashingle riverbed had to becrossed. Imagine spidery narrowwheels slipping round theboulders, the Benz found thecrossing very difficult. The datewhen this car was imported hasnot been definitely established, itwas probably sometime in 1900. Itwas also said that benzine had tobe imported from Sydney for thecar. Whether or not this was so,the petrol would have arrived infour gallon tins, two to thewooden case .

In May the N.Z. Wheelmanrecorded , "The Glenroy carwhich we mentioned a fortnightago was placed in the hands ofMessrs Oates Lowry & Co. fordisposal and has been bought by alady, Mrs H.J. Shaw ofChristchurch. IMr Shaw you mayremember was already runningaround on the ex Acton-Adamstricycle which had arrived in1899. see Pt. 1)

The city now had three Benztype cars plus the red 'Star'Panhard , a quadricycle and theoriginal tricycle .

SPEED TRIALThe same issue carried another

interesting item, "A speed trialtook place last week between acouple of motor-cars in

Christchurch on the Ferry Roadand created a little mildexcitement between thecontestants the Glenroy car (thatis, the ex Wycliffe Goodwin BenzVelo] and the 'Zealandia ' (theOates RAGLAN BENZ Ideal) . Thecars kept abreast for a start but the'Zealandia' gradually drew awayand came in an easy winner."Claims were made that this wasthe first motor car race in thecolony and it was surely theinspiration for the manyencounters both official andunofficial to follow in the yearsahead. Although not taking partthe red 'Star' of the AdamsBrothers was also present. Thesight of two solid tyred Benzmachines, neither brand newpounding down Ferry Road at theexciting speed of about 16 m.p.h.must have given the localssomething to talk about for days.

The Glenroy Benz was probablynot a lady's car in spite of the salestalk and was soon sold to Mr J.S.Monck of Redcliffs near Sumner.

It was noted in July 1901 that heowned the car and he used it formany years. Towards the end ofits time with the Monck familythe Benz was housed under a tankstand and the engine kept inrunning order so as to power asawbench. When Piet van Aschpurchased the car from the familyin 1946 it was still mobile and hewas given a demonstration runbefore taking it away. In his handsit is another of our very early carsto have survived.

Page 21: VETERAN - Vintage Car Club of New Zealandvcc.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/BW-149-Aug-1984_low.pdf · full. John Vallings in his Bentley 3/4'/2 was fastest vintage at 37.72, but

About the time of the FerryRoad escapade both Oates and theAdams brothers were, in the eyeof the law 'scorching' about thetown exceeding the legal speedlimit of 4 mph and an editorial inthe Wheelman, asked why carsshould only be allowed to travel atthe same speed as traction engineswhile there was no restriction onother traffic, and suggested aspeed of 12 mph be allowed. OnApril 1st Harry Adams was finedlOs and costs for speeding. Tocounter this he was later seengiving the police free rides aboutthe city . Nicky Oates was fined £1and costs for a more seriousbreach causing an accident andthis was to have furtherconsequences.

EADIE QUADRICYCLETo go back to August 1900

Harry Adams who was then inEngland wrote to his father .. . . "1hav e learned all about motors. There is no doubt the De Dion isthe best. 1 have driven one myself

over 100 miles. 1 shall bring backthe latest tricycle with a 2% h.p .engine which will climb PortersPass easily. (3,100 ft pass on theroad to the West Coast). We shallhave plenty of fun during thesummer months. For a trip to theHanmer Springs the motortricycle would do the journeybefore breakfast. The power ofthe engine is wonderful. Fromwhat 1 have seen 1 think Eadie isahead in the motor business" .

This letter shows a certainexuberance not totally borne outin practise. It was written beforehe went over to Paris with Eadieto see the Motor Show . Thischanged his ideas to the extentthat he ordered the Panhard forhis own use , but obviously stillfelt there would be a market forthe less powerful quadricycles. Both took a little longer thanexpected to reach N.Z. ThePanhard arrived in April and thefirst Eadie quad in May .

Harry was a bit of a ladand his exploits are rememberedin Rangiora, long after his shortlife ended . In 1900 the RangioraBorough Council was havingsafety problems with bicyclesbeing ridden on the footpaths andat night without lights (it's stillhappening'] and ask ed the policeto prosecute the offenders. Oneroundup included a BoroughCouncillor, Charles Luxton, whoexplained in Court that he was notaware of any by-law coveringsuch an offence! Christchurch 20 milesbecause of some simplemechanical fault and it took himsom e tim e to come to terms withthe vagaries of the electricalignition system. Another incidentthat caught the eye of theWheelman was when the horseand delivery cart of Parrott & Co.local grocers were standing inAlbert Street , the motor-car camepast and frightened the horse, which bolted, the cart beingoverturned and the road beingstrewn with bread, eggs, sugarand various other articles. InNovember after the Cheviotearthquake, in the Eadie, heaccompanied the Adams Brothersin the Red 'Star', when they tookreporters up through NorthCanterbury to view the damage.

In September after Harry hadused his Eadie for several monthshe sold another one to Or BernardVolckman of Oxford, to getaround his large country practice. Not only did he teach the Doctorto drive his new machine but alsoshowed him how to service thecar and introduced him to themysteries of the ignition system.

Or Volckman 's brother Ronald ,also a medical practitioner but inRangiora, was soon to own thefirst motor cycle in the town, alsosupposed to be a 'Star ' , but theactual make as yet, notestablished .

COURT CASE

As a consequence of theaccident and fine for speedinggiven to Nicky Oates in May ,mentioned above, he was sued fordamages by George Gould,a prominent Christchurchbusinessman. Gould's horse andvictoria carriage were waitingoutside the Christchurch hospitalwith the groom in attendance, when the Raglan Benz of Oatespassed through heading for town .The horse was frightened, kicked, damaging its leg and the carriageand then ran away colliding with aCity Council dray . The groomsaid the horse was not a restiveanimal and could be made to pass

a traction engine PI. Supportingwitnesses gave evidence of the carspeeding at 10-12 m.p.h. and OrNedwill said how well the groomhad handled the horse in such anemergency. Although Oatesadmitted liability he disputed theamount of damage claimed. TheMagistrate gave judgement for theplaintiff and awarded Gould £15damages and costs - slightly lessthan he had claimed.

In June 1901 the Star Cycle Co.had to hand a pacing tricycle 23J.h.p . De Dion engine, Eadieframework £125 cash. This wassold in August to Or De Renzi, called the war doctor on accountof his service in the Transvaal(during the Boer War).

The Christchurch City Councilrepealed the Speed By-laws inJuly, which had restricted motorvehicles to a speed of 4 mph and 2mph round corners. Everymotorist now had to procure alicence under the McLean MotorAct and register at the office of theCity Council. This same monththe Star Cycle Co. was advertisingfor sale , " one of the cars importedby Mr McLean a couple of yearsago . The Empire City with itscramped streets of hilly formationis by no means an ideal place for'meting ' and in consequence thecars have been little used. F.N. &H. Adams have used the carthrough the stormy weather inChristchurch, 3V2 hp solid tyres ,Benz type with hoodremarkably handy vehicle" .Adams would appear to haveupdated the car, there was nomention of a hood or hoods ontheir arrival in Wellington in1898. January 1902 the McLeancar sent from Wellington toAdams Star Cycle Co. was stillwaiting a purchaser, anyone whowants a cheap' car etc . . .

With a little deduction itbecomes pretty certain that thisBenz was sold to Mr Peal Genn aLinwood, Christchurchphotographer. To explain - byFebruary 1902 Adams wereadvertising the second McLeanBenz for £150. It was sold inOctober 1902 to Mr Murie of

Invercargill, "one of the McLeanmotor-cars similar to the oneowned by Mr Peal Genn." Thiswas the first motor car to reachInvercargill, and already fouryears old! However, Muri e hadalready had a motorcycle on theroad there as we shall see in Part5.

The Kelly wedding photographshowing Peal Genn 's Benz needssome explanation and theinformation comes from the twodaughters of the Kellys. TheGenns were invited to thewedding of Ellen Shepherd andWilliam Kelly at Swannanoa asMrs Genn was a friend of thebride. They drove out the 18 or somiles from Christchurch in theBenz and arrived as the bride wasready to leave in the family buggy.Mr Genn offered to drive her tothe church in the car and she wasdelighted . After the marriage thisphotograph was tak en by J.M.Verrall a local photographer , butthey did not use the car for theirhoneymoon as has beenerroneously stated . A hundred orso of Verrall's wholeplate glassnegatives were disc overed in theattic of his old home wh en it wasbeing demoli shed about 20 yearsago and this photo has beenprinted from the original negativ e.The plates ar e in the hands of theRangiora Early Record Society, and are a valuable record of thefirst ten years of this century .When viewed carefully the carappears to have been updat edwith domed mudguards as well asthe addition of a hood .

Sir ,Th e purpose of this letter is to

enquire as to whether you have anyinformation conce rn ing a ca r which, ifit still exists , would be vet e ran with a nunique hi story.

At the concl us ion of World Wa r I ,my grand fa the r (a Thomas Waddell ofTh omas Waddell & Son s ,Steelfounders, Chris tc hu rc h ] went tothe Un ited States of Am erica ,ac ompanied by his eldes t daughter , ona bu sin es s tr ip .

Whilst in America 11 think thi swould be [919 or 1920) he bought aStude ba ke r ca r which had beencu stom bu ilt for a so n o f th e U .S.President , Woodrow Wilson. However, the so n had be en kill ed inthe latter part of th e war, a nd in so meway , my grand father had been ab le tobuy the ca r and bring it back to NewZeal and .

My first recollection of it was seeingmy au n tie drive it from the ship' sde ck , down tw o planks , o n to th ewharf at Lytt elt on .

At that tim e I wo u ld have beenabout eight years o f age .

During the mid nineteen twentieswe lived a t Leithfield, a bou t 27 milesnorth of Christchurch , on a dairy farmwhich my father , as a returned soldier, had bou ght aft er the war.

My grandfather, a keen spo rtsm a n ,mad e frequent trips from Christ churchto shoot rabbits on o u r fa rm, andwhilst th ey were out shooting, I, as aboy of 10 o r 11, used to drive th e carabout 100 yards , ba ck and forth al ongthe driveway . I cou ld do thi s withoutdetection , as th e ca r was almos tcompletely silent , both in st arting, andwhile running, a nd was ve ry do cile inevery way .

Other details which I can rec all ar ethat it was six cylinde r, had a n e ng inedri ven air co mp re sso r for inflating th etyr es, and had a n aluminium panell edop en tourer body , painted m id gre y .

Unfortunately , I have no knowledgeof what ultimately became o f it , but atthat time it was ce r ta in ly a " one-off "and w ell in advance of itscon te m po ra ries .

I would be ve ry int erested to hearwhether any of your club membersha ve an y knowledge of thi s ca r.

SOUTHLANDWinter is traditi onally the tim e of

furious activit y in the sheds of localnumbers and this year is no exce ption.Alan Black has made great progresswi th his 1935 Austin 7 and this littlecar is now nearly read y for finalpainting. Another vehicle tha t is alsoin the finishing stages of pa inting isJohn Boyes' Rolls Royce touringca briolet. This car was on display atthe Christchurc h Swap Meet about 18months ago and sin ce then John hasdone masses of deta il wo rk andfinishing. Th e car is part icul arlyimposing and should prove a ve rypra ctical motor ing prop osit ion as we ll.Anoth er car that has been progressingquietl y is Barry Hayman' s 1930 Fordtourer and we look forward to itscompletion. Perhaps the mostsignificant sign of progress was seenaround Bluff the othe r night wh en aclearly unr egistered , unli cen sed andunfin ished S.S., tourer of 1935 wassee n circuiting the block for the firsttime. This ca r shot up the hill with asur pris ing turn of spee d and wecongratulate its own er Mark Poth anon a fine effort. With a dash ofuphol stery and a few wir es here andthere Southlan d will see an extre me lyrare and attrac tive mac hine .

Various ve hicles have changedhand s, too. Neil McMillan has

purchased Dave Shaw's 1939 NashSedan in semi-res tored sta te, thereb ycommitting him self to the grow ingNash cam p in our branch. AndyTuffl ey has some of his Aust in cars forsale incl uding a vintage chummy andNeville Dewson has sold his wellknown 1923 Buick tourer , a Bead edWheels cove r car, to a lucky fellow inWellin gton . Apparently the newowne rs have a famil y connec tion wi ththis car from way back.

Keen types are gea ring up for theactivities of the nex t year or so and welook forw ard to a continge nt of localsatt end ing all the eve nts between '85and '86.
