DANIEL ROBERTS owes his life to his best mate who threw himself on top of him to smother the flames he had been engulfed by.

Mr Roberts, of Ilam, suffered horrendous burns to his hands, face and body after a butane container was ignited by a nearby heater and exploded on June 7 at about 10pm.

He has been in an induced coma in Christchurch Hospital for the last 10 days and had to undergo an eight-hour surgery on Friday to graft skin onto his hands and part of his back.

His wife Nadia Roberts said if it had not been for his best mate, James, he would have died.

“He just saw his best friend screaming in pain so he jumped on top of him and tried to put the flames out. He didn’t even think about his own safety, he just tried to save his mate,” Mrs Roberts said.

James also suffered burns to his hands but it was Mr Roberts who took most of the blast.

She has labelled him a hero,

one of many that came to her aid on that night but also in the following days.

“The neighbours came over and just said we will take the kids you just take care of what needs to be done over here,” she said.

The couple have two children, a nine-year-old and a two-year-old and Mrs Roberts said it has been hard for both of them.

“My two-year-old wakes up at night crying for her daddy. She now comforts herself by cuddling his pillow at night,” she said.

On Friday the shed was be-ing pulled down because of memories it brought back for the family.

“I just want it gone,” Mrs Roberts said.

She said without the love and support from her family and the surrounding community things would be looking much worse.

“I have to give a huge amount of thanks to the emergency ser-vices, the doctors, the local kin-dergarten and my neighbours who have helped out. It makes it a little easier,” she said.

GRATEFUL: Nadia Roberts and her two children are praising the quick actions of her husband’s best mate saying he has probably saved his life. Inset: The shed after the explosion.

IT IS a sad fact that bullying is not only prevalent in schools, but in many other facets of life. Vicki Edwards-Brown is the driving force behind Be The Change, an anti-bullying programme that started after she saw a lack of empathy for those subjected to schoolyard harassment. The actress and singer talks about not only the programme but her stint on Shortland Street on page 10.

On page 6, reporter Donna Miles talks to the Canterbury Muslim Community Trust. Though they do not suffer the same levels of “islamophobia” compared to the rest of the world, there is still a way to go in under-standing the different cultures of the 40 ethnic groups that represent the Muslim community in the city.

RESIDENTS NEAR the proposed area where quarries want to dig deeper have told hearing commissioners their water has already been compromised.

The quarry hearing for the Canterbury Aggregates Producer Group’s Resource consent began last week with 138 people asking to be heard at the hearing.

CPAG, a group of quarry owners, want to be allowed to dig deeper than the current threshold of 1m above highest recorded groundwater levels.

The 10 quarries cluster together at McLean’s Island, Miners Rd and Selwyn Rd.

Yaldhurst Resident Association member Wayne Tewnion and Riccarton-Wigram Community Board chairman Mike Mora both attended the hearing.

Mr Mora said residents near the quarries told the hearing commissioners Sharon McGarry, David Mountfort and Hugh Thorpe they have to drink bottled water.

“When we hear the stories of the suffering people have been

exposed to over the years of quarrying, it is very sad,” Mr Mora said.

Ngai Tahu, the city council, Environment Canterbury and the Canterbury District Health Board are some of the many organisations opposing the application.

More than 600 submissions were made in relation to the joint application by Canterbury Aggregate Producers Group.

“If we don’t win it, it will be a very sad day,” Mr Mora said.

Along with several other members from the Yaldhurst Rural Residents Association, biologist Dr Graham David Fenwick made a submission opposing the quarry owners proposed activities to quarry deeper.

Dr Fenwick presented preliminary research showing the potential affects proposed

quarry deepening could have on groundwater water quality, biodiversity, ecology and ecosystem services.

He said his evidence was preliminary because there was almost no research on how biodiversity and aquifer ecology could be affected by the deepening of quarrying.

Dr Fenwick said The Christchurch Groundwater Protection Zone has “very thin soils” and “highly porous underlying gravels” making the underlying water that supplies the city very vulnerable to land-use activities.

He said if the proposed activities proceeds, stringent monitoring of water quality and stgofauna is essential to sustain the services delivered by groundwater ecosystems to the city.

“Because of the substantial uncertainties over . . . combined potential adverse effects . . . I consider the deepening of quarrying activities below the highest recorded groundwater level, as proposed, seems inappropriate,” he said.

The hearing continues this week, with the quarries making their case.

DIGGING A HOLE: Winstone Aggregates operating at the Yaldhurst Quarry, 233 Old West Coast Rd, is one of the 10 quarries applying for a resource consent to excavate deeper.

Water quality concern – residentsBIN STOCKTAKEKerbside wheelie bins throughout the city will be fitted with radio frequency tags as part of a stocktake starting next month. The stocktake is designed to save $9.3 million on the cost of the bin collection service over the next 13 years by removing lost, damaged and stolen bins from circulation. The radio frequency tag to ensures bins that are damaged, stolen or found on other properties can be easily identified. They can then be checked and matched to the database, returned to their original property or reallocated for future distribution.

JELLIE PARK MANAGEMENT PLANA presentation will be made to the city council on the proposed changes to the Jellie Park Management Plan. The current management plan was approved by the city council following public comment in 2010. The changes of the plan is in relation to providing a recreation and sports centre on the terrace as an aquatic facility offering indoor and outdoor features as set down in the city council’s aquatic facilities plan (2006).

TWO PROPERTY fires, with all the drama and heartache they entail, occurred last week – the result of very topical causes reflecting the start of winter.

In the early hours of last Sunday, a household in Parklands was alerted by smoke alarms to the fact the house was on fire.

That there were operating smoke detectors saved a pos-sible tragedy, but the cause may have been avoidable.

The origin of the fire was traced to a clothes dryer that had been started before the oc-cupants went to bed.

There’s two points here. Firstly, it isn’t known whether

the lint filter had been cleared

recently. If it hadn’t, and this should

be done every time the drier is used, it is possible the contents just got hotter and hotter to ignition temperature.

Secondly, the use of these things should probably be re-stricted to when you’re at home, up and alert. Then you can deal with problems immediately as they occur.

The other fire was a classic winter event, where fire ash was

left against the side of a garage in Linwood on Tuesday. Ash is an excellent insulator. Hot em-bers encased in the ash, inside a bucket, will not cool down for days.

In this case, heat transferred through the ash, the side of the bucket and the iron cladding of the garage, igniting the wooden framing.

It is recommended that five days is the minimum time to expect ash to completely cool.

Clean your lint filterGUTTED: A garage fire on Linwood Ave started when hot ash was put in a bin.

Halswell Community Project chairwoman Chrys Horn writes about crime in Halswell. Have you noticed a significant spike in crime? Email your views to [email protected]

Halswell has long been a very safe community with low levels of crime. Recently there has been a significant spike in crime, probably due the actions of a very small number of people, and for most of us this this is very unsettling.

It is good to remember that much of the crime is petty in nature. However, it is important to remember to lock cars and homes, to remove valuables from cars, and generally to be security conscious. It is also good to make the effort to report any crime to the police.

Even if they can’t do much straight away, they may be able to see patterns in what is going on which may help at a later date.

It helps to remember that we all actually still live in a community of pretty trustworthy people who care about their neighbours. There are regular discussions on Facebook

and neighbourly where we see peo-ple actively helping each other out and thanking others for help.

There are a range of things that we can do as a community to dis-courage crime. Setting up neigh-bourhood support groups, getting to know our neighbours, knowing what is going on in our community and knowing about groups that work to protect us are all useful.

If you missed the meeting held on Monday then go along to the one at noon on Wednesday, June 29, at Te Hāpua Halswell Centre.

Crime in Halswell

A reader responds to the Western New’s article on major speed limit changes around the city proposed:

J. Mortimer, of Halswell – I would hate to see traffic drib-bling along at 30km/h.

The city council has already

solved the problem for cyclists in Tennyson St in Beckenham by putting the cycleways up off the road.

With all the massive road-works that have taken place over the last five years why weren’t the cycle lanes done at the same time? Another problem solved.

I thought when they dug up Halswell Junction Rd they would of done the same as on Tennyson St as it’s a very busy main road.

For every dumb idea the city council comes up with, ratepay-ers shouldn’t have to pay their rates.

News By Georgia O’Connor-Harding

A MOBILE library has been agreed to as part of the Riccarton Community Centre after concerns were raised by residents in the central Riccarton area.

The decision comes after first draft confirmed a library would not be included in the plans.

It is planned the mobile library will visit the centre once a week.

Last week, feedback from the public was made to the Riccarton-Wigram Community Board on the community centre’s concept design.

Deputations were made from the Central Riccarton Residents’ Association and the Christchurch Photographic Society.

Community Board chairwoman Helen Broughton said the board is also committed to having a council service desk, more storage and a commercial kitchen.

She said the design is also capa-ble of having a second storey.

The Western News learnt con-struction is a year away and the facility is not expected to open until June 2018.

Ms Broughton said the land of the current Riccarton Com-munity Centre will be sold with proceeds going towards the fund-ing of the new centre.

“Owners will need to demolish the building,” she said.

Mobile library for community centreLodge boss ‘dumbfounded’

 By Georgia O’Connor-Harding

THE MANAGING director of a retirement home has been left “dumbfounded” after a request to make it easier for vehicles to access the facility was turned down.

Last week, the Riccarton-Wigram Community Board unanimously voted against Kauri Lodge’s request to change the planned traffic island on Riccarton Rd, which is a part of bus priority scheme layout.

The lodge wanted to change the layout so a raised median strip outside the eastern en-trance of the property would be smaller. This meant vehicles could still turn into the lodge.

It said relying on the western entrance only, which fell in the middle of the intersection of Matipo St and Riccarton Rd, was too dangerous.

But the community board refused.

Managing director Hamish Bennett said it was unfair to the lodge.

“Our argument is logical, the experts have looked at it and are as dumbfounded as we are,” Mr Bennett said.

He said to restrict access to the lodge would mean

increased risk of an accident when a person tries to make a U-turn further down the road. This could have a major finan-cial impact on the company

and increased response times for emergency services.

Deputy Mayor Vicki Buck, who was against Kauri Lodge’s proposal,

said an independent safety audit showed shrinking the me-dian strip was more dangerous.

“Turning right in there is ac-tually quite scary because you can’t see what is coming around the corner (from Matipo St),” she said.

But Ms Buck said it was a “worse-case scenario” where if drivers missed the turn-off they could go up Puriri St,

turn around the church car park, go back and do a left-turn.

A city council report said it would lead to more congestion at the Matipo St-Riccarton Rd intersection.

“They are lovely people. We were looking at all the possible configurations and I would have liked to have helped them but we can’t find any way . . . that is actually safe,” Ms Buck said.

CLOSE TO 40 different ethnic groups represent the Muslim community in the city.

Community worker Dr Husaini Hafiz said that the city’s 3250 Muslims did not suffer from the same levels of Islamophobia experienced by Muslims in Europe and the United States, but racial and religious prejudices can exist everywhere.

Dr Hafiz said the Canter-bury Muslim Community Trust is building cultural and religious bridges by reaching out to the city’s Muslims and the wider non-Muslim com-munity.

“We would like to ensure that Christchurch remains a good place to live for all, which means taking steps to foster better understanding between different groups,” he said.

Dr Hafiz said many people assumed that the Muslim com-munity in Christchurch was homogenous with the same cultural practices and religious beliefs.

He said, in reality, the Mus-lim community in Christch-

urch was very diverse. The trust’s outreach pro-

grammes are run jointly with the Islamic Women’s Council New Zealand.

ICWNZ member Denise Jeager said the inclusion of Muslim women in the outreach programme was es-sential to show Muslim women had a voice and they were will-

ing to exercise it.ICWNZ volunteer Nada

Tawfeek said the outreach pro-gramme was useful to bring about more open-minded views of Muslim women.

“Some people were surprised to hear a girl in hijab speak with a British accent,” she said.

Dr Hafiz said focus groups run in Canterbury had

identified three common concerns amongst Muslims in Christchurch: leadership, com-munication and lack of Islamic knowledge.

One of the trust’s goals was to address the need for stronger communication chan-nels between Muslims and non-Muslim communities.

Last July, the trust invited students from New Zealand Broadcasting School to join in the breaking of fast at the Al-Noor mosque in Christchurch.

The invitation was a follow-up to an earlier educational session where the students were introduced to basic con-cepts of Islam and the impact of the media on Muslims.

This year a similar educa-tional session was offered to student journalists at the Uni-versity of Canterbury and Ara Institute of Canterbury.

Office of Ethnic Communi-ties’ general manager, Maarten Quivooy, said organisations such as the Canterbury Mus-lim Trust play a “vital role” in educating and supporting New Zealanders to embrace and celebrate the benefits that diversity brings to us all.”

SCIRT crews have been out in force fixing underground pipes and roads this year in the north-western suburbs.

• Extensive repairs to the wastewater network in Upper Riccarton and Ilam will be completed in September.

• Repairs to underground pipes and roading throughout the Hornby area will be complete in October this year.

• Residents will still see SCIRT crews putting cameras down manholes to investigate the damaged pipes.

• Many of the less damaged pipes in the area have now been fixed using pipelining and this will continue, in some suburbs, through to the end of the year.

• Badly damaged pipes in this area will be fixed by crews digging down and replacing sections.

THE MYSTERIOUS good Samaritan who looked after an injured dog has been found.

Last month, when dog Luke was hit by a car, it was Upper Riccarton resident Teresa Nesbit who gave up her duvet before carrying the dog to its owner’s car.

Immediately after being hit the dog was found by his own-er surrounded by concerned young people.

“I was so blown away by the kindness of the young people and their looking after both of us with tenderness, was very caring,” she said.

Sadly, soon afterwards, the old but active dog was put down.

For about three weeks after the accident, owner Philippa Graham (also known as Luke’s mother) had been searching for the “kind lady” in a bid to return the duvet and thank her.

Following the Western News article, Mrs Graham was contacted by Miss Nesbit to say she was the lady with the duvet.

The duvet has now been returned to its rightful owner.

Sixteen-year-old Luke was described as a character with blue heeler breeding who enjoyed chasing cats and was no stranger to the city council’s dog control after being let out to wander the streets.

“He chased cats which could be embarrassing. When on the lead and I was biking he would suddenly lurch sideways and leave me flat on the ground,

as he had seen a cat,” Mrs Graham said.

Luke was often found at Middleton Grange School where he was made a fuss of by the children, and Steel Bro Transport Solutions on Wrights Rd.

Luke had even ended up in the dog control facility in Bromley.

Mrs Graham said she was forever building weld mesh

panels around the house but Luke always found a way out on to the streets to wander.

She said when Luke was younger he had a close call after he got out of her back yard and was hit by a car end-ing with him having stitches to his eye.

Mrs Graham said Luke was her best guard dog and would be well missed by the family.

TWO Christchurch Girls’ High School students had the luxury of knowing they would win a regional cooking competition even before competing.

Year 13 students Bridget James and Emily Perkins were the only entrants in the Canterbury section of the National Secondary Schools Culinary Challenge, held at Ara Institute of Canterbury last week.

This meant they only had to show up to gain entry to the national final in Auckland on August 30.

The competition was meant to involve several teams of year 12 or 13 culinary students going head-to-head in a live kitchen cook-off to produce four portions of entrée and main meals in 90min.

Instead the girls were effectively able to use it as a practice run for the national final and a chance to hear judges’ feedback.

James said the pair had been happy with how they went.

“No other teams were around to stress us out, but I think we did pretty well.”

Regional head judge Glenn Fulcher said it was very unusual to only have one team in a regional final.

“We probably get on average

about four to six teams per re-gion.”

As regional winners, James and Perkins earned a $500 Bidvest voucher, a chef’s jacket for the final, a $200 Southern Hospitality voucher and travel assistance to get to the final.

The national winning team will receive more than $17,000 worth of prizes and entry into the International Secondary

National head judge Mark Wylie said the competition was a once in a lifetime opportunity for students wanting to enter the hospitality industry.

PORTOBELO Avonhead Preschool and Nursey celebrated Matariki, the Maori New Year with a bright disco recently.

The tamariki from both the pre-school and nursery brought along their whanau and friends, and enjoyed dancing to music they had chosen earlier.

Flashing lights and glow sticks lit up the night with a hot air lantern was released to represent one of the seven stars of Matariki.

Over the past few months the tamariki have shown a lot of interest in music and movement and they have all really looked forward to the evening.

Portobelo Preschool owner

Lyn Eder said she would like to thank all who came to cel-ebrate with them and is look-ing forward to the next one.

I heard that you were actually bullied as an adult, is that right? What role did that play in starting Be The Change?

Yes, I was but it’s not the driv-ing force behind why I started Be The Change. That driving force was to do with my husband working in a high school, seeing the effect that bullying was hav-ing on young people around me, and just really having a desperate need to help them and massive empathy for them. I was think-ing ‘that’s hard enough’, and then you have the earthquakes to deal with as well, and we need something in New Zealand to empower young people to stand up to bullying.

Yeah, I was bullied in the workplace but I didn’t know it at the time, so I guess it would have been good to have tools and tips to know that, actually, that’s not okay.

Can you tell me more about your background before starting Be The Change?

My background is really in the speaking side of it. When I do the workshops and presenta-tions, that comes from an acting background that I have. I have been on Shortland Street and other things when I was younger, so that has drawn me to being able to present to young people and fit in.

When were you on Shortland Street?

I was on in 2010. My husband [Shaun Edwards-Brown] was ac-tually on for a whole year during 2009 and 2010 as well. He was a pivotal character and I got a two-month contract as well, which was really awesome.

What character did you play? Her name was Jewel Fitzpat-

rick.What was Jewel like?

She was actually an actress. I was acting, playing an actress.

Who did your husband play on Shortland Street?

He was Ben Goodall – a para-

medic.How did your tenure end

at Shortland Street? Did your character get killed off or any-thing like that?

No, some main characters did a play and I was in that play, so the play just ran its course and that was it.

Did being on Shortland Street open up any more doors for you in terms of acting?

Yeah, we lived in Auckland for six months and did some ads and things like that. Then we came back to Christchurch. I had major back surgery and then, being stuck in bed for six weeks while watching TV, I saw something which inspired me to create Be The Change.

What was it you saw on TV?It was a programme about

a bully prevention charity in America called Challenge Day and I saw that and just thought ‘wow, that is really awesome’ and it just inspired me to do something because we needed something like that in New Zealand.

You mentioned being in some ads, what might we recognise you from?

They’re pretty old now – Vector’s fibre to the door was one. I was just like standing at a sink turning the tap on and trying to get water through a straw.

TAKING A STAND: Vicki Edwards-Brown started Be The Change, a charity that aims to tackle bullying.

Vicki Edwards-Brown started the charity Be The Change in 2011 to tackle the problem of bullying and help support victims. She spoke to reporter Tom Doudney about what inspired her to set the charity up, her role on Shortland Street and the freak spinal injury she suffered.

The Blind Care Company has been cleaning and repairing the region’s blinds for over 60 years. Those six decades have seen changes in both fashion and technology. Styles have ranged from festooned fabric swags to straightforward and still popular holland roller blinds, from vertical to horizontal slat systems, and in every colour or pattern popular since the 1960s.

Whatever your style, the Blind Care Company has the expertise to keep your window treatments looking fresh and working efficiently. Using only eco-friendly chemicals, the build-up of dirt, dust, grease, nicotine and smoke residue

can be removed so that your blinds smell fresh and are restored to their original glory. The company can repair blinds also, having a huge range of parts in stock. And if you want something completely new, a great range of blinds is available for purchase.

The company prides itself on efficient service, providing a fast turn-around, with most work taking one or two days, and a same day cleaning option is available. It makes it as easy as possible for clients. The Cashel Street location couldn’t be more convenient and a pick-up and drop-off service is available. 150 blinds per day can be cleaned at this site,

or one of their mobile vans can do up to 50 per day. That means they will come to your home or office, remove and clean your blinds on the spot and reinstall them for you.

A cut-down and size alteration service is available in order that the blinds you bought are a perfect fit.

They are experts in their field with a huge amount of experience to draw on. In fact, all their staff has been on board for at least 8 years, and many up to 20 years. Whatever the job involves, they will work hard to make sure it gets done, including one job of 800 blinds which they completed in 4 days.

But predominately I used to sing – I’d sing at Twiggers, at Addington Raceway. We used to sing every Friday and Saturday with the band. So a lot of my performing was theatrical with singing in a band and stuff like that. I had my own band called V.I.P. I have also done about 20 shows through Showbiz over the years.

What sort of music did you sing with your band?

I love 80s. Anything from the 60s right through. It was all Top of the Pops stuff that people like to hear.

So, have you stopped playing with bands now?

I do stuff with a group called Chant et Danse, a Christchurch entertainment group.

You also mentioned that you had major back surgery, what happened there?

It was a really freak accident. Eleven years ago, we were driv-ing down Moorhouse Ave and there were high winds and a three-storey high tree broke off in the wind just as we drove past and the tree came through the roof on to my head.

Oh my gosh!I’m laughing now but it wasn’t

good at the time, and it literally broke my back. I had two spinal surgeries so I have got a titanium back.

Do you feel good as new now?No, I have chronic back pain

but I have just learned to live with it and do the best I can through exercise and being healthy and that sort of thing, and having a positive attitude about everything – everything. If you can think of something to be grateful for in life, and literally I think helping other people helps

me. If I can lie in bed at night saying I have helped one person, that makes me happy.

What sort of support do vic-tims of bullying need most? Is it really just people being kind to them?

That really is a huge part of it, yes. It takes a community to prevent bullying – not just a school, or the person, or the family. Schools are the ones that are often blamed but they really struggle with the resources and it’s people like me who can help

them create positive cultures – and I need funding. Funding would enable me to give more re-sources and help to more schools in Christchurch.

But yeah, just being kind and doing things like, for example, setting up lunchtime events at schools. We held an anonymous appreciation day at Cashmere High School, where we provided kids with cards and they write anonymously nice notes to other people. We delivered 1200 notes to teachers and students that day.

It was such a wonderful experi-ence and just set a positive buzz around the school.

How do you think we should view people who bully? Are these bad people or should we pity them, too?

I do believe that a bully gener-ally is someone who is doing that because they are being bullied themselves, so I do go the way of feeling sorry for them and empathising with their situation, rather than telling them they’re bad.

[Edition datE]2DRIVE TO THE CONDITIONS

Safer winter drivingIf you want safer and more enjoyable travelling this winter, consider these tips on how to prepare for and drive to the conditions before you’re on an icy, wet or snowbound road.

For road travellers, winter can be the most dangerous time of year. Motor vehicle accidents involving wet weather, fog, ice and snow can have serious consequences, these conditions can hit anywhere and at any time during winter. The first and most important thing you must do is check your vehicle is road worthy.

You may have a current WoF but it does not nescasarily mean it is safe for winter conditions. Check your tyres are in the best possible condition; tread depth, correct pressure and general wear.Ensure your lights and indicators are in perfect working order. Turn the hazard and headlights on, walk around your vehicle to make sure all lights are going. Get someone to press the brake pedal so you can check those lights are functioning.

It is always worth giving your battery a little TLC before the change of the seasons. Make sure the battery’s posts and connections are corrosion-free and the fluid levels are correct. If you need a new battery then replace it before it is too late.

Having a clean windscreen inside and out is important, it only takes a little misting to make it next to impossible to see the road and your surroundings, a dirty windscreen is much slower to clear. an often over-looked safety feature; windscreen wipers play an essential role when it is raining

or snowing. The wiper blades should be in good condition and should clear the windscreen not smear the water around. If you turn the wipers on and you still can’t see it is probably time to change them. While you are checking your wipers check the fluid level in the windscreen washer container as well.

drive slower than you normally would as it only takes a split second to lose control in wet or icy conditions. avoid sudden braking or turning manoeuvres that could cause you to skid. accelerate smoothly and brake gently. For vehicles without anti-skid

braking systems, pump the brake pedal in short rapid bursts rather than pressing long and hard to avoid skidding or sliding. In winter, especially in poor weather, double the two-second rule and leave a safe distance between you and the car you’re following.

Beware of black ice. Black ice is a thin sheet of ice on the road that is dark in appearance, making it extremely hard for drivers to see. It is commonly found around waterways and lakes, more often in shady or cooler areas. Black ice can cause drivers to lose control very easily.

MakE surE you carry snow chains and know how to fit them correctly. Chains must be compatible with the road wheel, there are no ‘one chain fits all’ options. Make sure the chains are fitted to the driving wheels, for example a front wheel drive car means chains to the front. once fitted keep your speed under 30kmph.

Burnside High SchoolGreers Road, PO Box 29 677, Christchurch 8540, New ZealandTelephone: 358 8383Website: learn.burnside.school.nz

Thank you

Burnside Associate Principal

To everyone who attended our Open Night on Tuesday 17 May. We trust you enjoyed your time with us, learned more about our school, and gained an insight into what makes Burnside High School special. I am grateful to our 250 volunteer student guides who were proud to share their school with you.

Burnside High School is very successful and has an outstanding reputation for its ability to ensure that students achieve very well. We do this through our high-quality learning environments and specialist facilities. Our size, and all the advantages that this brings, is a point of difference and is what makes this decile 8, state, co-educational school special.

Burnside High School bases its culture on a vision of ‘personal excellence and caring for others’. Our values-based approach and purpose-driven culture is the foundation for our success. Our school crest is the historic cabbage trees (tī kōuka) that stand so proudly on our grounds. They are a historic landmark, guiding the way to a safe journey. The school ethos is based on tī kōuka: guiding all who pass this way.

The six significant features that make Burnside High School a leader of learning are:

• We are a centre for academic excellence with an emphasis on high-quality teaching practices and in the outstanding achievements of many of our students.

• Our roll of around 2,500 students enables us to provide an extensive, diverse and specialised curriculum that caters for and challenges students of all abilities.

• We provide an exceptionally wide range of co-curricular opportunities (music, drama, dance, clubs and sports) for students to enjoy, learn new skills, take leadership roles, and achieve at a high level.

• We are a caring school where students are known and supported as individuals within a positive, inclusive and well-resourced learning environment.

• We have effective relationships with parents and the wider community that improve outcomes for students.

• We are innovative and responsive to the evolving nature of society through continuous and rigorous review of our systems, practices and procedures.

It is my firm belief that this school, in partnership with parents and caregivers, has the proven ability to guide students to become young adults with the skills, attributes, and attitudes to make a success of their lives in the workplace, in the community, and as members of supportive and loving families. I believe in, and am proud of, Burnside High School and feel privileged to be its Principal.

highlights

Richard Barnett has become Burnside High School’s Associate Principal this term, an exciting new challenge for him after four years as Deputy Principal for South Division.

Whilst he will miss the students, families and staff that he got to know well in that area

of the school, Mr Barnett is looking forward to broadening his responsibilities. Although he will not be teaching himself - for the first time in 32 years - Mr Barnett still finds working with and for students to be the most rewarding part of his new job at Burnside.

Congratulations to everyone involved in Stage Challenge, this year both in the Open Division (Seniors) and the Raw Division (Juniors). Open received awards for: community, costumes, set, soundtrack and lighting design. Raw received awards for: choregraphy, costume, concept, performance, visual enhancement, lighting, and Spirit.

The student led Speak Up group organised a very successful Pink Day this term. This involved Year 13 students dressing up in Pink for the day, to show that at Burnside High School we aim to create an environment where all students feel safe and can enjoy their education free from bullying. We were also very grateful for a new initiative that was brought to us by Ashley McDonald and her form class 12SPRL. This year every student in the school was able to sign a pink cardboard T shirt which was displayed in our library and made a beautiful and meaningful display.

On Monday the 16th of May the Year 13 Sports Leadership class completed a charity run to Akaroa. The class chose to undertake the task of running to Akaroa in order to raise funds for New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation and The Prostate Cancer Foundation. The class planned numerous fundraising activities such as a pizza night and sausage sizzles as well as approaching individual members of the community for individual sponsorship. The run itself started at 6:30am and the class reached Akaroa at 4:30pm. The students all together ran 469kms averaging half a marathon each. Some of the organised fundraising is yet to be completed but so far they have raised over $2000.By the end of term 2 they hope to hit a grand tally close to $5000.

CHRISTCHURCH BOYS’ High School could go to the top of the Thompson Trophy standings with a win over Cashmere High School tonight.

Boys’ High come into tonight’s basketball game oc-cupying third spot in the com-petition, behind Cashmere and Burnside High schools.

The team has no shortage of talent with three under-19 and two under-17 Canterbury representative players in their line-up.

The only blip in the season to date was a 76-85 loss to Burnside a fortnight ago.

“We sort of dragged the chain in that game a wee bit. We finished well and got it back to three points with a few minutes to go, but just couldn’t quite seal the deal. It was a good game to be part of though,” said CBHS coach Glenn Lang.

One of the driving forces behind CBHS’s success has been Jack Ansell.

The forward is a consistent source of points, averaging around 20 points per game.

Ansell has also been produc-tive on the boards. He leads the league with 70 re-bounds, 30 of which have been of-fensive.

CBHS will also be looking to have the services of highly-touted Canterbury Rams guard Quinn Clinton back for tonight’s match.

Clinton returned from Asia last week after attending a coaching programme in China, which saw him test his skills against the best young players from throughout Asia.

The event was also attended by top coaches from around the world, as well as current and former NBA players.

Tonight’s opposition will provide plenty of challenges.

Last year’s runner-up, Cash-mere, are currently undefeated in the competition.

“They just have an all-round solid team, they go pretty deep. They have a stand-out guard, Connor McLaughlin,” Lang said.

McLaughlin is one of the competition’s top scorers and currently sits second in total assists. A vocal home crowd is expected at CBHS tonight. Tip-off is at 6pm.

Boys’ High aims to go top of table SPORTS

CREATING A PLAN: Christchurch Boys’ High will need to have a solid game plan tonight when they face an undefeated Cashmere High School.

TWO OF Canterbury’s top secondary school football teams will meet tomorrow at English Park.

Burnside High School currently find themselves second in the premier first XI competition, with six wins and one loss.

Tomorrow, they face third-place Cashmere High School, who sit just two competition points behind them.

Burnside will go into tomorrow’s game with no shortage of confidence.

Last week they were too strong for fifth placed St Andrew’s College, win-

ning 2-0.“We went two goals

ahead but you can never write off St Andrew’s.

“In the second half, we had 80-90 per cent of possession and figured, if they didn’t have the ball, they couldn’t come back,” Burnside manager David Williams said.

Putting the ball in the back of the net hasn’t been as issue for Burnside this season.

They have scored over 40 goals this season.

However, Cashmere has the second-best defensive record in the competition, allowing in just seven goals in as many games.

Top scorers Conor

Clarke and Reza Ahmadi have led the line well for Burnside this year.

The team will also soon have the services of fellow striker and New Zealand under-17 squad member Byron Heath, who is returning from a broken arm.

For Burnside, a top three finish and quali-fication for the national secondary school champi-onship is also a priority.

“ The standard has definitely raised. The Auckland teams play a more aggressive brand of football,” Williams said.

Tomorrow’s match will screen live on CTV. Kick-off is at 3.20pm.

ONE OF Canterbury’s most valuable economic earners – international education – is set to double, bringing close to a billion dollars to the region.

Last year, almost 10,000 inter-national students came to study in Christchurch, and by 2025 that figure is set to increase to 25,000, according to the Canterbury In-ternational Education Destination 2025 Strategy.

International education is Can-terbury’s fifth largest export earner, and the change will be positive

for the economy, Christchurch Edu-cated regional co-or-dinator Bree Loverich (left) said.

“This is going to increase the economic

value to $1 billion a year. But there are so many other benefits.”

Ms Loverich said other benefits included flow-on effect to the tour-ism, accommodation, telecommunication and entertainment industries, as well as a benefit for Kiwi students.

“They also provide an incredible value to the region in terms of cultural and social benefits with the diversity that they bring.”

She said Christchurch students can greatly benefit from the diversity, especially those that do not have the opportunity to travel overseas in their school years.

“In a global world and the 21st-century, this is absolutely essential for their future.”

smooth-air productsTo enSure the quality of your air, contact the experts. Smooth-Air Products can calculate the required air exchange for your building requirement. Smooth-Air offers a wide range of ventilation equipment, from air vents to ducting for fans, for both the commercial and domestic markets. They have an extensive range of fans and ventilation components in-store but they can also provide innovative solutions tailored to differing requirements.

VenTILATIon This includes both the exchange of air to the outside as well as circulation of air within the building. It is one of the most important factors for maintaining acceptable indoor air quality in buildings.

Filtered air supply for summer and filtered and warmed air in winter creates a healthy environment in which to live and work. In case

of poor or insufficient air intake from outside, the oxygen content decreases, humidity and dustiness levels increase. If exhaust ventilation is not provided or it is not effective, polluted air, smells, humidity and harmful substances are not removed.

Low oxygen with high carbon dioxide causes stuffiness in the room and occupants can feel drowsy. Invisible harmful substances like a high content of dust and tobacco smoke are harmful and can cause various diseases. even bad smells can cause discomfort or irritate the nervous system. In summer, it’s easy to open windows for cross ventilation, however as winter approaches, we start to shut up out houses to trap in the heat and as a result, air quality can decline.

It is therefore very important to ensure good air quality indoors through adequate ventilation.

noW WITH the colder and wetter weather on its way, home owners are focusing on ways to make their homes comfortable, warm and healthy for their families throughout winter. rISIng DAMP is an issue that affects many of our older properties which suffer from poor, or no, insulation. In Canterbury especially, post-quake, many people have relocated to homes that suffer from rising damp which can be associated with health problems. Independent tests have shown that up to 40 litres of water can rise from the ground and enter a house every day, leading to mildew, mould, condensation and musty smells. Moulds can produce various allergic reactions and the frail, elderly and very young are especially vulnerable.

Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd is a locally owned and operated firm. The team understands

Get rid of dampnessin your house

the problems caused by rising damp and are there to help. They will come to your damp home and pump a lightweight, flowable foam concrete under your timber floored home. Specially adapted for our new Zealand conditions and applications it provides a layer of protection against rising moisture. An unexpected benefit that the team at Canterbury Foam Concrete have noticed recently, is that many owners of properties which had underfloor foam concrete installed, reported that it also provided protection against liquefaction after the earthquakes.

The degree to which your body is nourished with optimal nutritional choices will have a profound effect on your overall health and wellbeing. It will influence your energy levels, your mental wellbeing, your ability to burn fat, and the strength of your immune system, among other things.

One of the most outstanding figures in the history of medicine was the greek physician hippocrates. he sums up the importance of optimal nutrition choices in one line: “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.”

With winter upon us, now is a great time to focus on increasing the number of positive choices when it comes to nourishing our bodies with great nutrition.

This helps ensure the vitamins, minerals and other nutrients are still intact. for example, raw almonds instead of roasted and/or salted ones.

ChOOse OrganIC Organic farming places the utmost importance on caring for the soil because it forms the basis for health, for all life forms. healthy soil encourages disease-resistant plants, which then transfers to the animals and people who consume those plants. By choosing organic, you are opting for food

5 TIPSthat has been grown without the use of synthetic pesticides and without the routine use of antibiotics.

drInk WaTer your body can survive a surprisingly long time without food, but it won’t last more than a few days without water. Optimal hydration is critical to ensure our muscles and nerves function properly, and even mild dehydration can lead to feelings of lethargy. how much to drink? The answer is quite simple – drink until your wee is clear or almost clear. That’s an easy way to measure whether you’re getting enough.

Take TIme TO pLan and prepare fOr eaTIng WeLL It takes time and preparation to change your habits. schedule out time to write shopping lists, shop for food and prepare meals. plan to eat before you shop to minimise the chance of giving in to temptation foods – or shop online to minimise even further. make bulk meals to freeze for busy nights and set aside time to prepare a packed lunch the night before. keep useful kitchen items in easy-to-reach places – for example, put the blender on the bench rather than in the cupboard so that healthy smoothie preparation is quick and easy.

Change OnLy One smaLL ThIng aT a TIme you may feel overwhelmed by wondering where to start improving your nutrition.

make one small, achievable change and once that becomes a habit (something you can do without a major effort), then focus on something else. small changes are the key to success. for example, instead of saying “I’m only going to eat wholefoods from now on and forever,” instead make your target more realistic such as, “I’m going to increase to eating at least four different vegetables per day, on at least five days every week.”

As fAr ago as 1927 Doctors used olive leaf to reduce fevers and knock out malaria. scientists have discovered olive leaf contains powerful nutrients that directly interfere and even destroy nearly every type of disease causing micro-organisms including bacteria, fungi, mould, parasites, viruses and even yeast infections. As well as this olive leaf has immune enhancing benefits by activating immune cells that fight infection. for these reasons it has become a popular tonic herb that can be used to keep the immune system strong as well as when need to dramatically speed up recovery of conditions like colds and flu, pneumonia, tuberculosis, herpes, shingles, urinary infections, yeast infections, and much more. It has also been found beneficial for chronic fatigue syndrome, low energy levels, exotic and deadly tropical diseases, two types of leukaemia and even some cancers. In many chronic health conditions the immune system is run down and it is easy to have complications that are often life threatening. Olive leaf may be a safe and very effective option to boost the immune system and allow the body to have more energy to help heal itself.

Olive leaf has also been found to be an effective cardiovascular tonic helping normalise high blood pressure, improve cholesterol quality, improve heartbeat

irregularities, and improve blood flow and vascular disorders.

Olive leaf extract is so effective that too high a dose initially may make you feel worse. This is due to too many micro-organisms dying quicker than the body can process these dead organisms. This side effect can be minimized if you follow our protocol on dosage. Also drinking water and herbal teas especially raspberry leaf can be quite effective. further information on the amazing benefits of olive leaf and how it can be effectively used is available from our Medical Herbalist or our Natural Health Advisers at Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy, 110 seaview road, New Brighton, Phone: 388-5757. It Is well known how important omega-3 fatty acids are to good health. It is estimated most people don’t even get a third of the recommended omega-3 fatty acids on a weekly basis. Countries with a higher amounts of omega-3 in their diet are known to have lower cardiovascular disease and, in many cases, better overall health. recent research has shown inflammation to be a big part of disease and the ageing process. fish oil can help reduce inflammation by providing essential fatty acids required by the body to heal itself and maintain good health. Until now most fish oil only contained omega-3 fatty acids in triglyceride form. fish, however, naturally contain omega-3 in triglyceride and phospholipid form but until recently the phospholipid form was lost due to the manufacturing process.

GO-Advanced Omega-PC sets new

standards in fish oil as it contains omega-3 attached to both triglycerides and phospholipids. studies have shown GO-Advanced Omega-PC to be far better absorbed, leading to increased levels of vital omega-3 fatty acids in the organs through giving the potential for more health benefits.

GO-Advanced Omega-PC is produced from fresh wild deep sea cold water fish using a new advanced and more natural cold extraction process that better preserves the natural nutrient profile found in fish. It is manufactured to high GMP standards and is molecularly distilled to remove any containments, toxins and heavy metals.

further info on this revolutionary new fish oil and its benefits is available from the Natural Health Advisers, Naturopath and Medical Herbalist at Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy in New Brighton, phone 388 5757. We are always happy to help!
