KYLE PARK TO BE INVESTIGATEDGEORGIA O’CONNOR-HARDING

The suitability of Kyle Park as a sports ground will be investigated by the city council as part of its planning for the mega Hornby facility.

Geotechnical examinations will be conducted in coming months at Kyle Park, according to city council reports on the South West Recreation and Sports Centre and the new Hornby library.

As part of this, the city council will do a scoping study to see if the two projects can be com-bined on a single site.

The Western News reported last month that the likely location for the Hornby Library and Service Centre, South West Pool projects would be Denton Park.

Riccarton-Wigram Community Board member Mike Mora said the city council needs to check the suitability of Kyle Park and if it would be good for sports fields.

He said all could be revealed in a month when the public ex-cluded designation may come off the information.

“Until we get feedback I can’t pre-empt what the outcome will be.”

But both Hornby Rugby Football Club president John Catchpole and Hornby Cricket Club president Kevin Hornbrook

said if they are relocated to Kyle Park from Denton Park to make way for the mega facility, it would be too small.

“Unless they were going to upgrade everything and put new lights, training lights, playing lights and everything – you don’t know what the city council is proposing.”

Neither sports clubs were aware geotechnical investigation plans were under way.

Kyle Park is an old landfill site that is home to the Christchurch City BMX Club.

In October the park was partially closed due to the discovery of asbestos but the city council has addressed the issue by fencing of affected areas and treating with a polymer to cap the surface and prevent disturbance of the area where asbestos fragments were identified.

GEORGIA O’CONNOR-HARDING

Figures released by Labour have revealed Riccarton High School has the worst financial deficit of all schools in Canterbury.

Riccarton High School suffered the fifth highest net operating deficit for any school in the country in 2014.

However, Principal Neil Hay-wood (inset) said the deficit the board ran in 2014 was deliberate.

“By that I mean we needed to do a significant upgrade to the wireless network throughout the school.”

He said although the 2015 figures have not been released yet he said there was a “positive feeling” as to the way the school was heading.

“There have been significant roads made into the deficit situation.”

The report from 2014 showed Riccarton High School was $413,416 in deficit to the Government.

Shirley Boys’ High School posted $285,684, the second

highest in Canterbury, followed by Christchurch Girls’ High School at $241,000.

Other schools within the western area of the city in deficit are: Villa Maria College – $162,823, Halswell School – $197,860, Ilam School – $84,333 and Broomfield School $26,288.

Together schools in the west of city was $112,5720 in deficit to the Government.

Ministry of Education head of sector enablement and support

Katrina Casey said they consid-er Riccarton High School to be in a sound financial position.

“When we access a school’s financial health we look at a range of indicators, the deficit is just one of them. Other indicators we look at are working capital, equity and cash flow.”

The Government committed $1.137 billion over 10 years to rebuild or redevelop 115 schools after the earthquakes.

“We are aware that much

has been asked of the Christ-church communities since the earthquakes, therefore support including funding is available for schools that need it.

Mr Haywood said the biggest cost was staffing and they had to be very careful how many staff they employed over and above the funding given to them by the Government.

“Just like in any business you do need to cut back in areas. Obviously the last thing we would want to do is have to shed staff.”

He said if any principal in the country would agree schools would always like more funding from the Government.

Ms Casey said Riccar-ton High School received $8,391,145 million in Govern-ment grants in 2014 and they have not approached the the ministry with any concerns or requested further funding.

The highest deficit in the country was posted by New Plymouth Boys’ High School, at $471,502.

OWAKA PIT FIREA further fire has occurred at Owaka Pit in a pile of wood-chip. The fire did not happen in the Medium Density Fibre pile but in a pile of wood chips. Since then the wood chips have been spread out so that it is less likely to catch fire. Riccarton-Wigram Community Board chairman Mike Mora said it is still a real issue the amount of content on the site that is inflammable. He said it is a “ticking time bomb”.

MIDDLETON GRANGE SCRUB FIREThere was a small scrub fire at Middleton Grange School last Thursday at 5.18pm. There was no damage to buildings and the fire was not deemed suspicious. A 2x2m one-hose reel was used to extinguish the fire and the Sockburn fire crew attended.

Burnside music teacher and world-renowned singer Ravil Atlas

Do kids need music? The very simple and overwhelmingly supported answer is yes! There are numerous studies that support early music education.

It improves cognitive, numeric, social, com-municative, and emo-tional skills. In short, it enhances everything we purport to want in education. It is preva-lent in every child’s life. It crosses social and ethnic boundaries and binds us as human beings. It supports cross-cultural learning and inter-disciplinary teaching methods.

In other words, you can more effectively teach maths, social science, history or any other sub-ject by including it within a music educational framework.

To do this, it requires a strong plan supported by the Ministry of Education, understood by school administrations, and given proper training and support for the teach-ers that deliver the curriculum.

In addition to the many docu-

mented benefits, music can be a galvanising force in the culture of a school, a community, and a nation. Although music educa-tion should be delivered through the school system (and I hope that we will someday follow the lead of so many other nations) each child should be encouraged and supported in music activities

by parents, family, and schools.

My comments are in-formed by my career as a musician, a music ed-ucator, and a researcher, but more importantly by my fond memories and understanding of

the many benefits given to me through my musical activities and the superb teachers that gave me my musical education.

My passion and my opinions come from the viewpoint of a father whose grown children have benefited from a strong musical education through the schools and the hope that his now six-year-old daughter will benefit in the same manner here in New Zealand.

Last week the Western News asked readers what they thought of the Awatea Rd Reserve landscape plan. They respond:

Jeanette Allpress – I read the Western News article on March 1 and was dismayed that the trees the council is planning to retain for the reserve are birch trees. It has been well publicised the allergic reactions people have to birch trees and it seems incredible to me that regardless of the fact they are a beautiful tree, they should be cultivated in public places.

The most ‘suitable’ four locations for the new Halswell Skate Park have been identified by the city council. But if Scott Park is chosen the sports clubs will have to relocate. Last week Western News asked where readers would like to see the skate park go. They respond:

Pamela Neil – We have them every few kilometres . . . lots of dips and uphill areas that are concreted for the kids on blades and skate boards. NO areas for children to play. They are just for skaters etc. They are very busy most days.

Jan Baird – Westlake

Reserve is situated in a quiet residential area, and it accommodates and encourages wildlife and its preservation. The reserve is used for walking and cycling with a children’s play area also available. The proposed site at Westlake

Reserve designated for the skate area negates this purpose, and it should be located within an area with other activities such as the new library, swimming pool, and sporting grounds as at the Halswell Domain.

Christchurch Boys’ High School has the highest number of students cycling out of 10 schools a study has found.

The study by former Canterbury University PhD student George Williams surveyed schools across the city late last year and found low numbers of students cycling.

CBHS had 25 per cent of student cycling, Christ’s College was second with 22 per cent, Christchurch Girls’ High School on 18 per cent.

Riccarton High School had 13 per cent, Hillmorton High School just five per cent.

Thirty-three per cent of stu-dents from the study were not cycling due to the loads they have to carry and only 12 per cent said it was because they found the journey dangerous.

This comes at the same time the regional transport commit-tee, operated by Environment Canterbury, expressed concern at the low number of school students cycling.

Burnside High School was used as an example due to the lack of cycleways nearby.

Burnside’s lack of cycleways around its campus was pointed out by the Canterbury District Health Board public health physician Anna Stevenson at a recent regional transport com-mittee meeting.

She said there was a correla-tion between this and the popu-

larity of cycling to school.

“Burnside High School was just one of the ones that came up as an example that it isn’t easy for kids from all parts of the city to get directly there safely.”

Burnside principal Phil Hol-stein said the cycleway outside the school needs work done to make it safer for students to cycle on.

“The proportion of students cycling to school is consider-

ably small.”Ms Stevenson said obesity

levels in New Zealand are con-tinuing to climb, and putting cy-cling into an everyday activity for school students was ideal.

Spokes Canterbury chairman Don Babe said he was disap-pointed with the number of students cycling to school.

He said it would be good if 20 per cent of students were cycling to school but wouldn’t say there were even that many.

Toy ambulances have been turned into the real thing following an ASB fundraising campaign for St John.

The campaign saw more than 23,000 toy ambulances sold as well as additional donations made to help put a real ambulance on the road as part of the St John fleet.

The brand-new vehicle was unveiled at the St John training centre and is now based at Wrights Rd, Middleton.

An ASB spokeswoman said the Canterbury region sold 2917

toy ambulances, the most of any region.

ASB executive general manager marketing and communications Roger Beaumont said he was thankful to New Zealanders across the country for getting involved and helping ASB support their charity partner St John through the toy ambulance campaign.

“We are delighted to provide the ambulance to the Canterbury region. The region has endured some tough times over the past

few years – and continues to do so. We see this as a very practical way to continue to show ASBs and ASB’s customers’ support for the region,” Mr Beaumont says.

The toy ambulances were sold at ASB branches nationally and online during November and December 2015.

PREPARED: The ASB’s St John toy ambulance fundraising campaign saw more than 23,000 toy ambulances sold to help fund a new vehicle.

COMMUNITY: Organisers Shannon Clark, Raesha Ismail and Ashley Walker at the Connect ‘16 day. DAY OUT: Raesha Ismail and Megan Whitelaw.

Canterbury University students were warmly welcomed into the Riccarton community last Sunday.

Connect ‘16 was an event organised by two health and practice internship students to help them get to know their neighbours and other locals in the area.

Canterbury University students Ashley Walker and Shannon Clark were behind the event held at Harrington Park which was supervised by lecturer for Health Science and Education Raesha Ismail.

The New Zealand Institute of Sport, Sport Canterbury and the UCSA were some of the organisations attending the event.

New Zealand Police helped to initiate the programme.

Sergeant Steve Jones was at the event speaking to students about prevention information including

preventing burglaries, car theft and registering with the New Zealand Police party register website Good One.

He said crime has decreased by about 27 per cent in the Riccarton area due to a combination of police schemes and community events such as Connect ‘16.

A Canterbury University spokeswoman said the event was a way to help reduce conflict that could arise between community members and students in the future.

She said the day showed a different way to enhance a community in a positive way and how Canterbury University could give back to the community.

The activities held included a Top Town flat v flat event, water activities, three on three basketball, volleyball and have-a-go individual activities.

A different-shaped roundabout at the intersection of Memorial Ave and Russley Rd will help the flow of traffic while major works are carried out.

The elongated rugby ball shaped roundabout is a tem-porary measure that will give vehicles more time to negotiate the intersection in Burnside.

The intersection is part of the wider upgrade of the road, which is a major freight and commuter route between Belfast and the Christchurch Airport, linking to Russley Rd

and the south-western side of the city.

Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board member Jamie Gough said he was unaware of the odd-shaped roundabout but praised the project for thinking outside the box.

“You have to give credit where

credit is due. It is a difficult thing to conduct those level of roadworks and still move traffic though at a reasonable rate,” he said.

Cr Gough also said he had

received a surprisingly low amount of complaints about the project.

“I thought there would be a lot of people unhappy about the delays but it appears the general

public understand what is going on and are patient while it hap-pens,” he said.

New Zealand Transport Agency highway manager Colin Knaggs said while the

changes will alleviate traffic congestion he urged drivers to be cautious.

“We ask motorists to be aware of changes in traffic management, follow on-site signage and drive to the conditions,” he said.

The upgrade project is part of the transport agency’s Christchurch’s SH1 Western Corridor improvements which will reduce congestion and improve safety between north and south Christchurch along the corridor, and to the airport.

There is no secret to

Firstly happy 100th birthday Eve! It’s quite a milestone isn’t it?

Oh yes it is, I can’t believe I’m celebrating this with all of these people, my friends and my family. It was such a surprise, I didn’t know anything was planned until I came down at lunch time and

saw it on the notice board. It’s so lovely.

Shall we start from the beginning Eve, tell me about where you were born and grew up?

Well I had two siblings, Grace who was 10 years older and Olive who was about five years older, but she died before I came along. When I was six my

father moved us up to Taranaki because he wanted to go back to farming, he always loved farm-ing so we moved. I loved living in Taranaki. I’ll always be a farm girl. I grew up on a cattle farm, there were no sheep up there in that day.

Did you have to help round the farm?

Oh yes of course I did. When I was helping out on the farm I had to go feed the calves in the morning and I was always so scared of them, so I would go running into the paddock and they’d all come chasing after me because I had their milk. I never learnt to stop running and just give them the milk.

Did you get to keep one of the farm animals as a pet?

Yes I did, one year the sow had one too many piglets, so I got to

keep one as a pet. The wee thing travelled around with me every-where, I used to push it around all over the place in a baby carriage. I never seemed to mind.

Did you go to any dances when you were a teenager Eve?

Well I still lived in the country, it was a great life . . . but I went to dances all the time. Would stay out until 3am usually.

You seem like quite the party goer.

It was normal back then. There would be an orchestra, not always a full one but they’d play music until the wee hours. We would have supper around 11pm and then keep dancing. I went out with a lot of the boys because they were all my dancing partners and I loved to go dancing.

Is that how you met your husband? Out dancing?

Oh no. He wasn’t a dancer, Bruce never liked dancing. He was a friend of a friend, we had some of the same friends and would all go out as a group. One day he saw me and thought he’d like to date me so we started dat-ing.

Did he get jealous of the boys you were dancing with?

Eve Riley, who lives in Halswell’s Anthony Wilding Retirement Village, celebrated her 100th birthday last week. She spoke with Caitlin Miles about going to dances until 3am, being chased after by boys and calves and still acting on stage at age 71.

longevity for Eve – ‘I just lived’Well I don’t think so, because

they were only my dancing partners.

What was that like, growing up during the war?

Being in the country I didn’t have much to do with it. I knew it was going on of course but it didn’t impact me. Even when Bruce and I were married it still didn’t seem real. It wasn’t happening here.

When did you get married? It was before the war . . . I got

married when I was 20, and had my first child, Margaret, when I was 21. And then Bruce had to move down to Wellington because he was in the Home Guard.

Did you not move down with him?

Oh no, not at first. He only had the odd day off and I had a baby to look after so I was pretty busy.

You were raising him on your own?

Well again that’s just what you did back then. It wasn’t a big deal, we did fine, but then I decided we would move to Wel-lington, Bruce having the odd day off was okay for me, better

to see him now and then than never at all.

Did you work after you moved down to Wellington?

Yes, when I moved down there I decided to become a librarian. I always wanted to be one because I loved books. So I studied and got a degree to become a librarian and I got a job at Onslow College, in the library. That was a very special library, there were so many books. The headmaster walked past one day and saw me tak-ing classes in the library and he said why don’t you become a teacher? So all of the teach-ers from the college helped me to get my qualifications. I was never officially qualified though, but I taught there for quite a long time.

What did you teach?Oh I can’t remember that.

You’re making me pull up a lot of old memories here, I am 100.

You had two other children is that right?

Yes. I had Margaret then Al-lan six years later then Ruth six years after that.

So when you weren’t busy raising a child and teaching

what hobbies did you have?I did a lot of acting. It was

all amateur stuff, we were very keen on the theatre. Even when I moved back down to Christ-church I got to do some acting in the Town Hall, I was 71. I loved Shakespeare, I did a lot of Shakespeare. All the usual amateur stuff that people do.

When did you decide to move down to Christchurch?

The children had grown up by then. We moved down to be with my son Allan and his wife Ruth, Allan was away on business quite a lot so we moved down to help her out and sup-port her.

What did you do when you moved back down here?

Well I helped out for the Cancer Society for years, just volunteering, nothing special about that. That’s how I met my second husband, Bob. My first, Bruce passed away 30 odd years ago.

Tell me a little about Bob.There’s not much to tell re-

ally, we met volunteering for the Cancer Society and became close friends. We’d been friends for many years, and then we

were both alone. We just got on so well and we were so close we decided to get married.

Well Eve you’ve had a wonderful life it would seem,

what’s your secret on making it too 100?

Nothing. I don’t have a secret. I just lived. That’s the main thing. You just have to live.

EARLY DAYS: Eve was in her early 20s when she got married and had her first child.

After shopping at Mitre 10 MEGA Hornby Noel Craythorne got a great surprise when a $50 prize turned out to be a new truck.

Mr Craythorne is now the owner of a brand new Toyota Hilux SR5 after being drawn as the winner in the Mitre 10 Summer of DIY competition.

The competition was open to all customers who shopped at any of the company’s store around New Zealand from December 26 to February 8.

With such a large number of entrants, Mr Craythorne was thrilled to find himself the win-ner after shopping at Mitre 10 MEGA Hornby.

“I got the shock of my life,” Mr Craythorne said.

“When they called to tell me I

had won something I thought it would be a $50 voucher. When they said it was big I thought maybe a $100 voucher.”

A seasoned angler, Mr Craythorne said the new truck would definitely come in handy for heading up to his fishing spot on the Rakaia River.

“It’ll be useful alright, I do a lot of fishing and it’ll save me having to use the quad bike.”

Mitre 10 MEGA Hornby gen-eral manager Liam Pawson was pleased to see a shopper from his store take the spoils.

“It’s the perfect vehicle for heading out fishing, going on an adventure or carting about mate-rials for Noel’s next DIY project so I’m sure they’ll get great use out of it,” Mr Pawson said.

PRIZED RIDE: Mitre 10 MEGA Hornby general manager Liam Pawson, Summer of DIY competition winners Nita and Noel Craythorne, and Simon Jackson from Miles Toyota, with the Craythornes’ new vehicle.

After finding shortcuts were being taken in some ‘authentic’ Indian restaurant meals, he was inspired to launch a range of spice mixes and pastes, which are now sold online and at selected food stores, writes Jan Bilton.

SPICY SQUID SALAD Roger’s spice mix is a combination of six spices, including turmeric, cumin and coriander. The mix is also great as a base for korma or added to yoghurt for a marinade for chicken. – Serves 2 as a light meal

250g frozen squid rings, thawed 2-3 tsp Roger Raizada’s One- For-All Spice Mix for Chick-en, Fish or Vegetables 2 Tbsp canola oil 2-3 cups mixed baby salad greens and herbs 1 shallot, thinly sliced 3 cherry tomatoes, halved Dressing: ¼ cup lemon juice 1 clove garlic, crushed salt and pepper to taste 1 tsp olive oil Pat the squid rings dry. Dust in the one-for-all spice mix. Heat the oil in a medium-sized frying pan. When hot, pan-fry the squid rings for about 40

The features on a person’s face can change or determine how they are perceived, and we are all subconsciously affected by these

cues. Every time we see a face, we make judgments on that person’s character and personality, and all this happens instantly and automatically in our brains.

Years spent talking, chewing, pouting, smoking or smiling can lead to lines and wrinkles around the lips. Lip fullness can also be an indicator of aging, as time spent biting or pursing the lips can lead to deflated, thin lips over time. Lips are also especially vulnerable to environmental effects, as the skin on the lips is less than a third of the thickness of the skin on the rest of your face.

Many women really want to improve

the appearance of their lips but are understandably very scared about looking like a duck, especially after the all too common publicised disasters affecting some unfortunate celebrities. These days we all recognise women are looking for a natural appearance rather than looking like a “Kardashian”.

Dermal fillers for the lips are one of the most popular cosmetic medicine treatments available, and are a very quick and easy way to dramatically improve your look. They typically last between 12 – 14 months, and are hyaluronic acid based. Hyaluronic acid is a natural component of the skin, meaning the risk of adverse reactions to the procedure is very, very small. Recovery time is usually around1 day.

There are generally 3 types of requests for lip fillers at Koru Clinic, clients who want to

1. Boost Lip Volume2. Minimise smokers lines 3. Define the lip border & reduce

lipstick bleedYounger patients tend to go for larger

lip volumes, whilst more mature women want a more natural lip augmentation .

At Koru Clinic we only recommend using hyaluronic acid based fillers with high safety profiles, and after assessing each persons lips will decide on the most appropriate filler for the augmentation.

Dr Jefferies is a cosmetic Physician working at Koru Clinic. Call 372 3589 for an appointment to chat about a lip augmentation.

Their selection of range hoods and ventilation systems are efficient to run, drive out moisture, lower humidity and filter out

We at Enviro Master, are qualified engineers and therefore are able to fully test and diagnose any problems you may or may not be aware of with your heat pump. Also, as we are associated with all major brands, we are able to repair these under warranty if they are still within the warranty period.

Enviro Master’s five-star installation guarantee ensures correct installation, and a demonstration so customers have an understanding on how it will best meet their needs.

B12 is essential for energy production, cell health, regulation of mood and sleep cycles, nerve health and repair, and prevention

of homocysteine - a serious cardiovascular risk factor that is known to cause damage and plaque in the blood vessels. It can also increase the chances of a stroke. Harvard researchers found a 34 per cent decrease in risk of vision loss in a study of participants aged 40+ who were supplemented with B12. Another study linked a higher risk of hearing loss in subjects in their 60s who were low in B12.

The reason so many people lack B12 seems to be due to our body’s inability to absorb it as we age, as the digestive system becomes less efficient. Anti-reflux medication and other drugs further reduce B12 absorption.

The good news is B12, in the form of methylcobalamin sublingual tablets that are dissolved in the mouth and thru bypassing the digestive tract, have been shown to effectively raise B12 levels in the body.

You can boost circulation to help blood back to your heart – without strenuous exercise. An Aircycle can help pump the blood.

Working the calf muscles with a “treadle” action, just like the old sewing machines, is the key. The Aircycle “treadle” exercise assists the calf pump mechanism.

According to Dr Matthew Parsons, “Anyone on diuretics with the problem of fluid retention and anyone sitting with legs down for any length of time may be helped by using this exerciser.”

“My swollen ankles have reduced and I can now sleep without pain,” Alex Simmonds said. “And my night cramps have gone!”

“Since using the Aircycle, my diabetic ulcer has healed and all the pain gone. My toes have stopped tingling and getting sore ,” Richard Leighton shared.

Aircycle exercises also strengthen leg muscles and relieve arthritic pain. Keeping your legs moving is not just good for your heart. It will help you remain mobile and independent.

Aircycles are available in pharmacies. For information and orders, visit the website www.aircycle.co.nz or call 04 569 5013.

With eight clinics throughout Christchurch, there are hundreds of people who can now eat, talk and smile with complete assurance,

thanks to the team at Duchenne Dental.

that feel comfortable, look perfectly natural and are suitably secure.

They use current, state-of-the-art technology. So whether you need full or partial dentures, replacements or brand new, they will create dentures that are a precise fit for you. They combine digital scanning technology and injection moulding techniques with hand crafting

to make sure that their patients leave them with dentures that won’t cause ongoing painful ulcers or slip in their mouths. Their kind and encouraging service leaves their customers, “feeling like a celebrity...and their follow up care is exceptional.” Some clients turn to them in desperation but leave feeling “transformed”.

If you want to eat, talk and smile with confidence, phone 03 375 4444 or visit www.duchenne.co.nz to find the clinic closest to you and book your complimentary consultation.

Heart burn, indigestion, feeling tired often, low energy, gas, constipation or diarrhoea, abdominal

cramps, frequent urination, oral thrush (white coated tongue), sore throat, fungal skin infections and rashes, jock itch and chronic disease among others are just some of the common symptoms.

A causative factor for all these symptoms and more can be a yeast organism called Candida albicans. It is often underestimated what a profound effect it can have on our health and wellbeing. Around 70 per cent of people have a Candida overgrowth in their intestines, mouths or on their skin.

It is normal and beneficial to have some Candida in the gut where it is kept under control by the good gut bacteria or probiotics that feed on this yeast. However, using antibiotics without probiotic supplementation, sickness, poor diet, insufficient stomach acid and medications are some of the factors that can upset this delicate balance and allow the Candida to thrive. The tentacles of Candida can penetrate the intestinal wall overtime, causing inflammation and leaky gut syndrome where toxins and only partly digested proteins can enter the blood stream, often leading to

food intolerances, poor health, allergies and susceptibility to asthma.

The Candida yeast often enters the blood stream as a fungus. Symptoms will vary depending on its location in the body. If it enters the brain, it can cause depression, anxiety and foggy thinking. Some researchers believe the Candida fungus can release a pleomorphic microorganism or virus that’s form changes depending on its environment. This is believed to be a factor in cancer and other chronic health conditions. However, it is the body’s weakened immune system and toxic environment that is the real cause of disease.

Candida imbalances in the gut can be reversed fairly easily with correct nutritional supplementation and care with the diet and lifestyle. To cleanse Candida fungus and its resultant toxins from the body can require a bit more effort and may take some months.

The natural health advisers at Marshall’s Health and Natural Therapy can provide you with a detailed nutritional protocol to cleanse the excess candida and its fungus from the body, and improve your overall health and wellbeing. Visit them at 110 Seaview Rd, New Brighton. Phone 388 5757. We are always happy to help!
