What is Row the Boat?

“Row the Boat” is the philosophy of the Western Michigan Football program. While facing adversi-ty, those in the program are encouraged to “keep your oar in the water.”

Following the loss of his second son, Coach Fleck developed a way in which he was able to live his son’s life for him. There are three parts to Rowing the Boat.

The Oars - The Energy you bring to your life. The symbol of strength.

The Boat - The Sacrifice. What are you willing to give up for something you never had?

The Compass - The Direction. This is the ultimate goal where is the bow of the boat pointed? It’s the close circle of who you surround yourself with.

Building a Winning Tradition• Last season marked the first time in program history Western Michigan has won eight games in back-to-back seasons as well as playing in a bowl in consecutive seasons.

• The Broncos’ 16 wins over the last two seasons are tied for the most over the course of two seasons in school history. Below are the most wins in a two-year span.

Years Wins1 2014-15 16 1999-2000 163. 2005-06 15 1997-98 155. 14 done 9 times

Most Balanced Offense Around• Last year the Broncos’ offense ranked 26th in the country in passing and 29th in rushing.

• The team was one of only seven schools to rank in the top-30 in both rushing and passing joining Baylor, Clemson, Arizona, Oklahoma, TCU and Indiana.

• Overall the Broncos ranked 17th in to-tal offensie with 490.3 yards per game.

Record Setting Attack• In addition to ranking atop the national stat rankings, Western Michigan also set several of its own offensive records.

• The Broncos set program records for points scored (468), total yards (6,384) and tied the record for most touch-downs with 58.

• Against Ball State last year, the WMU set the single game record for total offense with 711 yards.

Hog the ball• Western Michigan won the time of possession battle in all 13 games in 2015.

• The Broncos averaged 34:33 minutes of possesion each game, trailing only Stanford in the FBS. Below is the top 5 in the FBS last season in time of posses-sion.

School Time of Possession1 Stanford 34:482 Western Michigan 34:333 Arkansas 34:234 Ga. Southern 33:595 Wisconsin 33:51

Emphasis on Special Teams• Western Michigan has put an empha-sis on special teams since Coach Fleck arrived in 2013.

• The Broncos have had a freshman All-American kick returner in Darius Phillips in 2014 and saw Phillips return a kick for a touchdown last season against Michigan State in the opening game of the year.

• Part of the reason for WMU’s domi-nance in the third phase of the game has been special teams coordinator Rob Wenger’s ability to focus on just special teams as he is one of just 10 FBS coordi-nators to have no other responsibilties.

• Below is a list of special teams coord-iantors who are not tasked with coach-ing another position.

Unique Things on Way to History• The end of the 2015 regular season marked the first win over a ranked op-ponent in program history as Western Michigan defeated No. 24 Toledo 35-30.

• The Broncos had a few first-time occurences en route to victory since the current coaching staff arrived in 2013.

• The win marked the first time since Sept. 22, 2012 against UConn, that the Broncos won when trailing in rushing as a team (201-148).

• In line with that stat, it was also the first time in 16 games the team won when allowing an individual to rush for over 100 yards.

Setting Records Off the Field• Aside from setting a new standard on the field in 2015, the Broncos also set a new standard in the classroom with a record team GPA of 2.93

• The Broncos also saw 12 student-ath-letes named to the Academic All-MAC team with four also earning the Distin-guished Scholar Athlete award.

• Players who were named to the Academic All-MAC team include Lucas Bezerra, Kasey Carson, Lucas Cheroc-ci, David Curle Kristof Ifkovits, Derrick Mitchell, Taylor Moton, Alec Moulton, Zach Novoselsky, J. Schroeder, Trevor Sweeney, Zach Terrell.

• Bezerra, Mitchell, Sweeney and Terrell were Distinguished Scholar Athletes.

WMU FOOTBALL’S RECORD WHEN • Fellow junior Robert Spillane was hav-ing an all-conference type year, earning MAC Defensive Player of the Week against Miami (OH) before suffering a season-ending injury the next week against Eastern Michigan.

• This season will see a new face join the crew as another junior, Asantay Brown comes down from safety to play in the front seven. Last season Brown led the Broncos with 103 tackles and also had 3.0 tackles for loss, 2 interceptions and a sack.

Making the Most of his Transition• Defensive back Darius Phillips has made a name for himself around the country due to his aforementioned kick return TDs.

• When Phillips isn’t returning kicks, he has been making plays on both sides of the ball, playing as a receiver on offense as a freshman in 2014 before moving to defensive back last season.

• In his first season as a DB, Phillips ranked sixth in the country in passes defended with 20. He had five intercep-tions to go with 15 pass breakups.

• It marked the second straight year the Broncos had players atop the FBS lead-erboard in passes defended after WMU teammates Donald Celiscar and Ronald Zamort tied for the NCAA Statistical Championship in 2014 with 1.6 per game.

Former Phillies Make Early Impact• Western Michigan features two sophomores who were drafted by MLB teams before deciding to play football in punter Derrick Mitchell and quarterback Tom Flacco.

• Mitchell, was drafted in 2005 and played for the Philadelphia Phillies orga-nization for 10 years before coming to Western Michigan in 2014.

• Last season, Mitchell primarily handed kickoffs and tied the school record for touchbacks on a kickoff with 36.

• Flacco, the brother of NFL QB Joe Flacco, was also drafted by the Phillies organization, in 2014, but decided to play football rather than pursue baseball.

• As a true freshman, Flacco backed up Zach Terrell last season and provided a different element with his running ability as he rushed for 60 yards in the team’s 35-30 win over No. 24 Toledo.

P.J. Fleckhead coach4TH SEASONNORTHERN ILLINOIS, 2004

P.J. (Philip John) Fleck was announced as the 15th Head Coach in the 108 year history of the Western Michigan football program on Tuesday, December 18, 2012 to rebuild the program. Coach Fleck has received the reputation of being a program “turn around” coach by being under the tutelage of proven program builders including; Joe Novak (retired- Northern Illinois), Jerry Kill (Minnesota, Southern Illinois, Northern Illinois, Emporia State, Saginaw Valley State), Greg Schiano (Rutgers), and Jim Tressel (Youngstown State, Ohio St.). While being the second-youngest head coach in the FBS, Fleck is also distinguished as being one of two head coaches (along with Jim Harbaugh) currently in college football (FBS) that has played and coached in the NFL. ESPN ranked Coach Fleck as having the 12th best playing career of all FBS head coaches.

2015: Coach Fleck coached the Broncos to their first bowl win in program history, beating Middle Tennessee State 45-31, at the Popeyes Bahamas Bowl on Dec. 24. Western Michigan finished the season 8-5 after rattling off six straight wins during MAC play. The Broncos finished the regular season, beating No. 24 Toledo, 35-30, for their first win over a ranked opponent in program his-tory. The win gave the Broncos their first share of a MAC West ti-tle since 2000. The team featured the fourth straight MAC Fresh-man of the Year, as Jamauri Bogan ran for over 1,000 yards and 16 TDs. He was named the Popeyes Bahamas Bowl Offensive MVP after rushing for 215 yards and four touchdowns. Off the field, Fleck led Western Michigan to its highest team GPA in program history with a 2.93 in the fall semester. For its academic pursuits, the team featured a program record 12 Academic All-MAC Team selections and five MAC Fall Scholar-Athletes. He ended the year wrapping up the third straight No. 1 recruiting class in the MAC as well as the top Group of 5 recruiting class overall.

2014: Coach Fleck engineered the single greatest turnaround in WMU football history and the second-best turnaround in MAC history after leading the team to an 8-5 record overall, a 6-2 record in the MAC and a berth in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. Fleck was named Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year and was also a semifinalist for the Maxwell National Coach of the Year award. His recruiting expertise produced the MAC Offensive Player of the Year, MAC Freshman of the Year and USA Today Freshman All-American running back Jarvion Franklin. In total, 11 Broncos were named All-MAC, including First Team selections Franklin, Corey Davis, Donald Celiscar. Celiscar and Third Team All-MAC selection Ronald Zamort ended the season as NCAA Statistical Champions for passes defended. The countless hours of charity in the community continued under Fleck as did excel-lence in the classroom with nine Academic All-MAC selections and three MAC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete selections. The team boasted a GPA of 2.91, the second-highest recorded GPA in program history.

2013: Under the leadership of Coach Fleck WMU had three All-Mid-American Conference selections, including MAC Fresh-man of the Year WR Corey Davis, Davis was also selected for

All-MAC Second Team Offense. Linebacker Travonte Boles was

selected for the All-MAC Second Team Defense. Defensive Back Donald Celiscar was selected for the All-MAC Third team. In the classroom Coach Fleck had 17 Academic All- MAC players including: Kyle Lark, Justin Currie, Chris Prom, Leo Alba, Andrew Aurand, Darrin Duncan, Brian Fields, Jon Hoffing, Taylor Moton, Alec Moulton, Clark Mussman, Kirk Nakama, J. Schroeder, Cory Sueing, Zach Terrell, Tyler Van Tubbergan, and Zack Wynn. Coach Fleck orchestrated the then-best recruiting class in the his-tory of the MAC, ranking 58th nationally according to Rivals.com. It was the highest ranked recruiting class amongst all non-power five conference schools. It was later surpassed by the 2016 class which ranked 48th nationally. Sporting News named Coach Fleck the “Best Head Coach Recruiter”, and Sports Illustrated’s “Campus Union” blog named him the “Best Hire” of 2013. Fleck cam-paigned for funds which brought new turf for Waldo Stadium and the Seelye Center, WMU’s indoor practice facility, and a complete renovation of the team’s locker room and The Bill Brown Alum-ni Football Center. After the season Coach Fleck was inducted into the Kaneland High School Hall of Fame class of 2014 for his personal achievements.

2012: Fleck followed Rutgers head Coach Greg Schiano into the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After just one season with Fleck as a wide receivers coach both Mike Williams and Vincent Jackson had the best seasons of their careers with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Jackson ranked fifth in the NFL in receiving yards (1,226), ninth in TDs (8) and fifth in receiving yards per game (87.6). Jackson went on to start for the NFC in the 2012 Pro Bowl for the first time in his career. Williams set a new ca-reer-best with 996 yards receiving and signed a multi-year deal worth approximately 46 million dollars in the off-season.

2010-11: The pipeline to the next level as a wide receivers coach continued for Fleck at Rutgers under Coach Schiano. gland Patriots) all saw success at Rutgers before heading to glory in the NFL. Sanu finished the 2011 season setting both a school and Big East Conference record with 115 receptions for 1,206 yards and seven touchdowns, earning All-Big East honors and becoming one of the top-rated prospects in the 2012 NFL Draft.

2007-09: Fleck returned to his alma mater, Northern Illinois, for three seasons as the wide receivers coach and recruiting coordi-nator (2009). The recruiting classes that Coach Fleck put togeth-er went on to have record-breaking success with players such as Jordan Lynch, Martell Moore (Atlanta Falcons), Perez Ashford (New England Patriots, Cleveland Browns, Seattle Seahawks), and Cameron Stingily. Under his tutelage, Wide Receivers Britt Davis (New York Jets, Denver Broncos, New England Patriots), current WMU wide receivers coach Matt Simon (New Orleans Saints), Nathan Palmer (San Francisco 49ers, Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins, Denver Broncos) and Landon Cox (Tampa Bay Bucca-neers) all advanced on to the NFL.

2006: Coach Fleck was an offensive graduate assistant with Ohio State for their Big Ten Championship season. The Buckeyes went 8-0 in conference play and 12-1 overall with a trip to the BCS National Championship Game. Fleck worked with wide receiv-ers Ted Ginn Jr. (Miami Dolphins, San Francisco 49ers, Carolina Panthers, Arizona Cardinals), Anthony Gonzalez (Indianapolis Colts, New England Patriots), Brian Hartline (Miami Dolphins), Roy Hall (Indianapolis Colts, New Orleans Saints, Detroit Lions) and Brian Robiskie (Cleveland Browns, Jacksonville Jaguars, Detroit Lions, Atlanta Falcons, Tennessee Titans), all of which went on to substantial careers in the NFL.

NFL Playing Career

2004-2005: Fleck played for two seasons with the San Francisco 49ers (2004-05). After signing with the 49ers as a free agent in 2004, he spent most of that season on the practice squad before making an appearance versus the New England Patriots late in the year. He was placed on the injured reserve roster in 2005. In 2006, he left the 49ers to begin his coaching career.

Collegiate Playing Career (1999-2003): Fleck played from 1999-2003 at Northern Illinois, capping his collegiate career with the Huskies defeating Maryland, Alabama and Iowa State, rising to a No. 10 national ranking en route to a 10-2 mark. He ranks third in career receptions (179) and fourth in career receiving yards (2,162) in NIU history. Fleck has the second most receptions in a season (77) and led the Huskies in receiving yards in both 2001 (732) and 2003 (1,028). He holds the school record for punt re-turns (87) and ranks second in punt return yards (716) in a career. Fleck was named the National Player of the Week against Ohio University in 2003. In that game Coach Fleck had 14 receptions for 234 yards which ranks as the second best single game perfor-mance in NIU history.

Fleck earned First Team All-Mid-American Conference in 2003 along with being named Academic All-MAC and Second Team CoSIDA Academic All-American. Fleck showed his propensity for winning at the high school level (Maple Kaneland), winning 2 state championships in football. He was awarded all-state honors in three different sports three years in a row (football, basketball, and track).

Fleck (35/DOB: 11-29-1980) and his wife Heather have four chil-dren, Gavin, Carter, Paisley (P.J.) and Harper.
