Houston Texans NFL DRAFT

April 26-27, 2008

General Manager Rick Smith and

Head Coach Gary Kubiak Draft Wrap-Up Press Conference

(Press conference transcribed Tiffanie Hatley, Daniel Sampson and Deon Reynolds) General Manager Rick Smith (on the Texans draft picks) “Well first of all, on Wednesday when we got together I told all of you that I was expecting that I would feel real good at this time today. And that’s held true. I’m extremely excited about the draft class that we have been able to put together. The only thing you are able to control in this process is your preparation. It had felt like we had had a really outstanding draft preparation process and I think it worked out for us. The last couple of days we felt good about the acquisitions that we have made. We feel like we have added some positions of need. We feel like we have added a couple of players who can make plays. I’m just excited about the whole class and excited about the way the whole thing kind of feel into place. Specifically, when you talk about the class, we talk about (DT) Duane (Brown) and in the third round we get a corner who is a six foot, 200 pound guy who could run a 4.4, vertical jump over 40 inches and is just an extremely athletic kid. He can do all the things we ask our corners to do.” “With the extra pick that we acquired after moving back in the first round yesterday, to get a guy like (RB) Steve (Slaton), this guy can make plays with the ball in his hands. That’s an element that we didn’t have at the running back position, the speed element and the versatility. So we really feel good about him. In the fourth round a kid out of Virginia Tech, (LB) (Xavier) Adibi, he is an athletic, fluid athlete with long leverage and good speed. We talked about it the other day, that one of the things we wanted to do was increase the athleticism at the linebacker position. I we really feel like he is an excellent athlete for the position.’ “When the big kid from Texas (DT Frank Okam), another dimension that we didn’t have on our football team. When you talk about what (RB) Steve (Slaton) brings to the running back position you add an element to our team, (DT) Frank Okam adds this element to our team we didn’t have as a big massive man with quickness in his body and a very intelligent kid. A lot of these guys that we have added as you start to get to know them you’re going to find out that they are very intelligent young men and all good character kids. In the sixth round, a very good football player, (S Dominique) Barber out of Minnesota played in the Big Ten Conference. I have an affinity for the Big Ten Conference and the football that we play up there. This kid has good bloodlines and a competitive kid. We talk about him being a box safety because he doesn’t have the exceptional speed but he’s got good speed and can run and can cover and he’s an aggressive tackler. Anytime you can add a good football player as we look for value in that part of the draft, certainly we feel like we added some value there.”

“Finally, with the quarterback (QB Alex Brink), not a lot of talk about this kid because he is up in the Pacific Northwest but we really like what we see out of him. We think that he has the chance to develop into a quality NFL quarterback. I was hoping to feel this way as we were leading up to this weekend and certainly feeling really, really good about this class. I am excited about the handing the baton back over to him. In the off season we worked hard with the draft preparation and now we get to put them all out there on the grass here in a couple weeks in mini camp and let these guys get back to work. I feel good about it, I feel good about our football team. I think we have made some strides and some progress and I am ready to watch those guys go to work.” (on feeling fortunate to fill so many needs) “I do because in the off season we talked about what we needed, as we looked at our football team in January and areas we felt like we needed to address. We feel like being a free agency, in the draft we can address many of them and we continue to build depth and add playmakers to the team.” Head Coach Gary Kubiak (on where RB Steve Slaton is going to fit in) “We see him as kind of a change up kind of guy. He’s got home run ability as far as his speed. He makes a lot of big plays. There’s a place in the National Football League right now for what people describe as third down backs, guys that can catch the ball out of the backfield do those types of things. So, he’s got that dimension. He’s a very smart young man. This kid had 1,700 yards two years ago in a playing very good football. We know he’s a great kid and we know he’ll catch up with us real fast as far as what we do. We just think he gives us a little bit of a speed element that we may have been missing.” Rick Smith (on the trade and getting the extra selections) “I think when you look at the two kids we were able to get with those two picks it certainly solidifies our flats. As a young football team, as I talked about yesterday, anytime you can do that, especially when we are trying to build this team through the draft and get these young quality football players in here, with the two kids we were able to add, we feel extremely fortunate about that.” Gary Kubiak (on the character of the guys that were drafted) “I think this thing all started with me and Rick (Smith) and going back to these younger players that we have. You start to think of (LB) DeMeco (Ryans) and (DE) Mario (Williams) and these kids, (TE) Owen Daniels, not only the type of players they’ve been since they have been here but the type of character they have. When we looked at these guys and evaluated them, we take a lot of stock in how this kid is going to fit in our team. It’s like the (T Duane) Brown kid; we have a couple of guys on our team that we talked to that know him very well. No doubt he is going to fit in extremely well with our football team. Going and getting (C) Chris Meyers for a sixth round pick who might line up with one of his best buddies in (T) Eric Winston. I think that’s important. These guys have to want to play good. They all have the same thing at stake and when they are close it gives you a good chance to be even better.” Rick Smith (on DT Frank Okam) “When you look for things that give guys chances to maybe become better, you look at athleticism, you look at slots, you look at character, what the

Page 19: Houston Texans NFL Draft April 26-27, 2008prod.static.texans.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/2008_FinalBook_Staff.p… · Houston Texans NFL DRAFT April 26-27, 2008 Houston Texans 2008

guy is made up of and then we brought him in on a visit. We talked to him about some of the things that maybe some other folks didn’t see in him. We certainly feel like he has the makeup to be an excellent football player. He is a big man with a great quickness and the long levers and good speed. He will be hard to push around. He is a very intelligent young man. I think he took the LSAT for law school. This kid has the makeup to be a good football player and we think he will. With (defensive line coach) Jethro (Franklin) and (senior defensive assistant) Frank (Bush) working with him and getting after him pretty good, I think he is the makeup to football and he is committed to being as good as he can be and I am excited to watch him.” Gary Kubiak (on why he wanted a quarterback with the seventh round draft pick) “Well, I’ll tell you what kind of happened. Quarterback in the draft, you’re either going to go very, very high and go get the so-called guy you have earmarked. After that what you’re looking for is guys that you think down the road that may have the opportunity to develop into a solid NFL quarterback. Rick (Smith) and I had this conversation the other day, if we’re so fortunate to move back and we do pick up a couple extra picks, if this young man sticks around until late in that draft well this would be a great opportunity and a great try. This guy played in a great conference. He played in the Pac-10. This guy knows what it is to be chased by very good people. He’ll get rid of the ball. So all that stuff, he’s way ahead in that standpoint. He’s very, very smart. I like to try and he’s a great young man and I’m looking forward to working with him.” (on what he’s most excited about leading the Texans) “It’s funny because the NFL got its stages. Rick’s been busting his tail with this draft and that’s what we’ve been doing for the last six or seven weeks everyday. Now we walk out of here today and come in tomorrow morning and start setting our depth charts and then worry about which guys we are going to go into camp with and we are going to set our rosters. I’ll start getting out on the football field and putting it all together. The key thing now is to take these kids and d them involved with our guys and get better as a football team that’s what we got to do. So we are staring at about a month and a half of strictly football and then give them a little break in the summer and go back at it.” (on what struck him the most about this draft class) “The greatest thing is that we not only were able to get a player that we desperately needed to move forward I think is a very good key as a part of this organization with (T) Duane (Brown) and the future of this organization. Rick (Smith) was not only able to do that, but also add to the football team with picks. That’s what we had to do we had to continue add depth to our football team continue to get more competitive on the practice field. When we are competitive on the practice field our team can’t help but get better. There are a lot of guys that are going to try hard to make this football team this year and when things go that way you are making progress.” Rick Smith (on addressing the defensive end position) “We are going to put these out here in a couple of weeks in training camp. One of the things we talked about last year and haven’t talked about as much this year is that you just can’t do it all in one offseason. We certainly had some areas that we thought we wanted to address, but that particular area

Page 20: Houston Texans NFL Draft April 26-27, 2008prod.static.texans.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/2008_FinalBook_Staff.p… · Houston Texans NFL DRAFT April 26-27, 2008 Houston Texans 2008

we weren’t able to get. We are going to continue to look at that and we are going to coach these guys that we have right now and see what we have when come out of mini-camp.” (on selecting undrafted free agents) “Once that seventh round ends we will be able to contact free agents. What I have to do is get back downstairs and get with all of our scouts and coaches and create a priority list to look at the roster and talk about us getting back together tomorrow. We really have to do a little bit of that tonight and look at the depth chart to see where we are a little light.”

Houston Texans NFL DRAFT

April 26-27, 2008

General Manager Rick Smith and

Head Coach Gary Kubiak (Press conference transcribed Tiffanie Hatley, Brett Cervenka and Daniel Sampson)

General Manager Rick Smith (Opening statement) “Obviously there was a lot of excitement in our draft room this morning and afternoon. Obviously starting with the trade situation first when we were on the clock at 18 and we were able to execute a trade with the Baltimore Ravens. Actually we feel really good about that. As a young football team trying to build, anytime you can move back and acquire draft picks, and we talked about that in the press conference, to have an opportunity to do that, pick up the third round pick and a six round pick, we felt great about that. Then to be able to select (T) Duane Brown and I will let Gary (Kubiak) talk to you about why we feel so good about this guy on our offense. We feel like it was a productive first round, it’s just the beginning, and we are excited about the rest of the weekend.” Head Coach Gary Kubiak (opening statement) “First off, great job by Rick (Smith). In coaching, you work all week and you hope your game plan goes the way you prepared it to. The preparation for this draft, looking at our situation for the past month, it’s amazing how things just fell over the course of the last hour. We are very excited to get (T) Duane (Brown). There were some very good offensive linemen in this draft, obviously as you saw them go throughout the first round. We have really been in love with this kid for a long time. He fits what we want to do. He is very athletic, which we want guys to get to the second level and do some cutting and those types of things. We think he is only on the rise. This kid is going to get better and better. And the biggest thing I like, there are a couple of things that really drew me to him. I love his passion to play the game. He loves to play football, and we have a couple of kids on the team that know him. I have never heard guys speak so highly of a former teammate. We’re just very excited to get (T) Duane (Brown), obviously we’re calling on him to help this football team very, very early and like I said we are just very excited to get him.” Rick Smith (on how the first round trade came down) “Well, you know, like I said the other day, once you are three or four picks away, if you are at all interested in moving then you make those calls to say “hey, listen, if you’ve got a guy at 18 then we’ll be interested in moving back if we can.” We had been in contact with Baltimore over the course of the afternoon. So, it wasn’t something that was last minute in the sense that we had just contacted them. We had been in contact with them over the first round. Rick Smith (on if there were any thoughts of moving back again) “I don’t think he (Gary Kubiak) could have handled that. By the time we made the pick he was in the back of the room.” Gary Kubiak “I actually heard the phone ring with about a minute left in Seattle’s pick and I screamed down, ‘Don’t answer it’.” Coach Kubiak (on what previous Broncos player Duane Brown reminds him of and how this move affects T Charles Spencer) “I’ll start with (T) Charles (Spencer) first. (T) Charles (Spencer) is doing well. He is involved with our program; he’s working out with the team. He’s not 100 percent but he’s on his way to getting there. We’ve had great conversations with him over the course of the last couple of weeks. We are counting on (T) Charles (Spencer). We will probably start with him working inside when he is turned loose to actually go back out there with them team. There’s no doubt in my mind that he can help out our football team and I think he’ll push some of our starters very, very hard to get on the field, so what’s been going on with (T) Charles (Spencer) has been very positive. He’s not there yet, but it’s going well. As far as putting that pressure on (T)

Page 24: Houston Texans NFL Draft April 26-27, 2008prod.static.texans.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/2008_FinalBook_Staff.p… · Houston Texans NFL DRAFT April 26-27, 2008 Houston Texans 2008

Duane (Brown) and comparing him to a player, I hate to do that. I just like all the things I see. We like his length. We like his upside. We love his athletic ability. You know, you watch this guy work out at Indianapolis, the type of feet that he has. And to sit there and to see (Assistant head coach/offense) Alex (Gibbs) talk about a player like he talked about this kid overt the course of the last six weeks and for us to find a way to get him at 26, job well done.” Gary Kubiak (on what specifically it is that assistant head coach/offense Alex Gibbs likes about T Duane Brown) “Well, the first thing he has got to be able to do is to protect the quarterback’s blind side. Ya’ll know in our division the players that he will see on a regular basis. When you talk about (DE Kyle) Vanden Bosch, you talk about (DE Dwight) Freeney. You know, those type of players that he’s going to see week in and week out. So, he’s got to be able to do that, which he definitely has the ability to do. But the thing we’d like to get to in the running game, which I think is a key to our football team, is taking another step and moving forward is to run the ball better. If we run the ball better we are going to get our defense of the field some and just be a football team that can control the game better. I think this kid is an automatic fit for what we want to do running the ball.” Rick Smith (on being worried that they won’t get their guy after moving up) “We were worried. I think I tried to be the calming in the storm because I had a room full of people who were scared to death that we were not going to get him. So I had to put on a good face John. So we thought about that, we ran some scenarios but at the end of the day I was just very confident that we would be able to get it done and I’m just thankful that we were. You know you got to have a little luck in this process. Gary (Kubiak) talked about our preparation and I really feel like we have had a real good month of solid preparation and so I think that this process will go well this weekend but you got to be lucky as well. You got to have some luck with it and I think we were fortunate today. We’re just excited about adding this player because I think his upside is tremendous.” Rick Smith (on a chance of moving up with extra picks) “There is and we will go back down and start setting that up and maybe make some phone calls and try to put some value together to see if it makes sense for us to move into the second round. If not we will get two good players in the third round and are really fortunate enough to pick that sixth round pick up again that we had given away for (C) Chris Myers. So we will get some good players. There is value in this draft in the third and fourth rounds so we feel good about that and will be able to help our team.” Gary Kubiak (on discovering T Duane Brown through tape of last years pick Virginia Tech T Brandon Frye) “Oh, we definitely knew who he was. Of course (T) Brandon (Frye) was a little bit of a different situation. We saw (T) Brandon (Frye) going inside as a pro player and we saw him becoming a guard which is where he works for us now and will battle for a job. We did have a little insight on the kid. But I think what happened was that he switched over. He went to left this year. One of the things that hasn’t been mentioned is that this kid has played against players that he is going to play against in this league. He went against Chris Long. This guy went against good players on a week in week out basis. That was one the things that caught our eye about him. He’s going to see that same type of speed and those same type of guys.”

Houston Texans NFL DRAFT

April 26-27, 2008

Texans Owner Bob McNair

(Press conference transcribed Nick Scurfield) (on how excited he is about T Duane Brown given the team’s history at left tackle) “Well, I’m really excited about him because number one, he’s healthy. A lot of the tackles that we looked at in the draft weren’t quite as healthy as he is. With most football players, they have something wrong with them – a shoulder, an elbow, a knee, an ankle or what have you – and he’s a very solid guy, very healthy, so I feel real good about that. Also, the fact that he was a tight end and then converted to play tackle, (T) Eric Winston’s in that same category; he was a tight end in high school. Those players have a little more athletic ability than the guys who have just been offensive linemen all their lives. So, we think, and I think speaking for (assistant head coach/offense) coach Gibbs, Alex Gibbs and for Gary Kubiak, I think they feel real good about his athletic ability and what our coaches can do with him, how they can develop him. So we think he’ll be a first-class offensive tackle and it may take a year or two, probably will. (T) Ephraim Salaam has been playing very well for us, but we need depth there and we need a young player to be coming along, and Brown fills that bill.” (on how excited he is about the offensive line in general with assistant head coach/offense Alex Gibbs on staff) “Well, it’s exciting because everyone in the league acknowledges that Alex is probably the best offensive line coach around, and to see him work is going to be very exciting because he’s very colorful, and so I’m looking forward to see how he works with these young players. He has a reputation for really getting everything there is out of a player, and I think that’s really what it’s all about is getting everybody to play not just as good as they’re capable of playing , moving it up another level and playing a little better, and Alex (Gibbs) is able to do that. So I’m excited about seeing him work with these (players). And (offensive line coach) John Benton, our line coach, offensive line coach, did a wonderful job last year. We think the world of him and we just think having Alex (Gibbs) here is just going to make John that much better, and so we’re very excited about him. You try to strengthen your football team and we talk about our players all the time, but you want to strengthen your coaching staff, too. And if you can upgrade that every year just like you upgrade your player personnel every year, you’re just going to do nothing but get better every year, and so coach (Gary) Kubiak has done that with the coaching staff. I think Rick (Smith) is doing a fine job with the personnel.” (on trading down and still being able to get the player they wanted) “Well, that was terrific. And I’ve got to tell you, I was just holding my breath because I think we traded down eight spots, wasn’t it? From 18 down to 26, and we had talked about it and said well if we trade down two or three, maybe four, not as worried about that. Start talking about five, that’s getting kind of edgy and then we go beyond that, we go down eight, and so I think that’s an indication that Rick (Smith) really had his finger on what the other

Page 26: Houston Texans NFL Draft April 26-27, 2008prod.static.texans.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/2008_FinalBook_Staff.p… · Houston Texans NFL DRAFT April 26-27, 2008 Houston Texans 2008

clubs were looking for in terms of personnel and what they were going to be doing and he felt very confident that we were going to be alright because (T Duane) Brown was the person that we wanted at that point, and so we could’ve taken him then and not gotten another third round pick and a sixth round pick, or trading down as we did and sort of rolling the dice a little bit and we still got him and we got those extra picks. But I think that’s to Rick’s (Smith) credit that he really sized that up properly.”

T Duane Brown Conference Call

(Press conference transcribed Deon Reynolds and Ashley Thomas) (on his initial reaction when he received the call from the Texans) “I was just overwhelmed with joy. I was a bit surprised because I didn’t have much contact with them throughout the (scouting) process. I’m just very happy and I’m ready to get to work.” (on where he watched the draft) “I’m Richmond, Virginia with my family and friends.” (on coming to the Texans and joining former college teammate Brandon Frye) “Having someone there that I played with for a few years and that can help me throughout the process it means a lot to me. I got a chance to see their facilities when I was in the East-West Shrine Game. They have a great program and I’m honored to be a part of it.” (on what was going through his mind when other offensive linemen were picked in front of him) “I was happy. I had a few guys rated ahead of me. I just waited. I knew a lot of teams were looking at offensive tackle so I just waited. I’m fortunate to be picked in the first round.” (on knowing the Texans’ offensive tackle situation) “I have heard about it, but I haven’t heard about it too much.” (on switching to left tackle) “I love it. It is the ultimate challenge across the line. You have the number one job and that’s keeping the quarterback blind-side clean. I feel like I have the ability to play that position and I’m going to work hard to learn the offense and polish up my technique and try to contribute very early.” (on his biggest strength) “It’s my athleticism, pass protection, and being able to get up in the second level. I’ve been working on my run blocking a lot I need to improve in that area as well.” (on the kind of game he had against DE Chris Long of Virginia last year) “I had a pretty good game against him. I gave up one sack, but overall I did a pretty good job against him. I had a pretty good week of practice and studied him a lot and watched just about every game he had that year.” (on his expectations going up against the defensive lines of the AFC South) “I’m very excited. Seeing those guys every Sunday and just waiting for your time to compete. I’m very confident, but at the same time very humbled because I know they are great athletes and very crafty veterans.”

(on if he talked to Texans G Brandon Frye much at all from last year) “I talked to him a little bit during my season. I got a chance to talk to him when I went there for the East-West game. I haven’t talked to him since. I am sure I will soon here.” (on what G Brandon Frye told him about Houston and the Texans during their talks) “He said it was a great area; great team. He just got activated towards the end of the season and he is very excited about that. He just said he is in a great position right then and in a great area with great people.” (on the conversations he had with the Texans during the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis) “I did get a sense of interest. We just talked about what they thought I could bring to the team. Some things they thought I had to work on. They thought I was a great prospect, and with the proper coaching I could be a great player in the league. I feel the same way.” (on if he knows about assistant head coach/offense Alex Gibbs and his work in Denver and if it intrigues him) “I’m very interested and excited about the chance to work with him. I know he’s a great coach and he did wonders with the Broncos line, and looking for guys who are my type to help the lineup, and I’m going to do everything I can to help them.” (on his knowledge of zone blocking and the technique and adjusting to the pros from college) “We use a lot of zone blocking at tech. I think that I have a pretty easy transition learning this system and what they are trying to do. I have been on the zone blocking system for four years, so I don’t think it will be too hard.” (on the emotion of the family) “A lot of emotions were running. There was a lot of talk about me possibly going in the first round, but after all of the offensive tackles I was thinking maybe mid-second. Once I got the call everyone was crying and jumping and shouting and a lot of energy.” (on who called about the selection) “(Rick) Smith, and then I got on the phone with Kubiak after that.” (on what they said on the phone) “Just that they thought I was a great player and its time to get to work. They were very happy to have me. And that was about it really.”

Texans grab OT Duane Brown with 26th draft pickBy MEGAN MANFULLCopyright 2008 Houston Chronicle

The Texans were able to trade down and still get Virginia Tech left tackle Duane Brown. AP

After years of misfortune at left tackle, the Texans finally seem to have gotten lucky. They traded down from the 18th pick to the 26th pick in the NFL draft on Saturday and they still came away with the player they were targeting — Virginia Tech offensive tackle Duane Brown. The Texans are hopeful that Brown, 6-foot-4, 308 pounds, will eventually develop into the left tackle they have lacked since the inception of the franchise.

"We're very excited to get Duane," cocah Gary Kubiak said. "There were some very good offensive linemen in this draft, obviously you saw them go throughout the first round. But we have really been in love with this kid for a long time. He fits what we want to do. He's very athletic. We want guys to get to the second level, do some cutting, those types of things. WE think he's only on the rise. He's going to get better and better."

Brown converted from tight end to tackle as a sophomore in college. He played right tackle his sophomore and junior seasons. He moved to left tackle as a senior.

"I love it," Brown said of playing left tackle. "It's the ultimate challenge across the line. You have the number one job of keeping the quarterback's blindside clean. I feel like I have the ability to play that position. I'm going to work hard to learn the offense and polish up my technique and contribute real early."

The Texans do not have another pick today. Their next pick is the 79th overall in the third round. They will also have the 89th pick in the third round and one pick in each of the final four rounds.

Laying the Foundation - Senior Duane Brown Anchors the Offensive Line By Mike DeVine Originally published Sept. 29, 2007 in the UNC game program

The label "skill player" is a popular term used to describe football players like Eddie Royal and Branden Ore, who consistently handle the ball and put points on the scoreboard. However, the guys in the receiving corps are not the only members of the Virginia Tech offense who display athleticism. Even though their efforts usually only get noticed when the team is not moving the ball, the offensive linemen blocking in the trenches for the skill players have a great deal of athletic ability, as well. Take Tech's fifth-year senior left tackle Duane Brown, whom many claim is one of the best athletes on the roster.

If his personal-best 4.7 40-yard dash is not enough evidence, Brown has played three different positions, in addition to consistent duty on the punt and field goal teams.

"The main thing is athletic ability," Brown said. "I came in as a tight end, so I've always been able to move pretty well and that's the most important thing you have to have at that position. You have to be able to move at left tackle, too, because the guys you play against are pretty fast. Our quarterback can't see anyone coming on his blind side so I have to be able to sit him down back there. It also helps in the running game because I can get to linebackers when everyone flies to the ball and you have to keep up."

Brown's first switch, from tight end to right tackle early in the 2005 preseason camp, was not made to merely show off the Richmond, Va., native's athletic prowess, but to match up better with the opponent.

"Starting at right tackle was pretty tough for me at first," Brown said. "They moved me before the NC State game because of Mario Williams. He was a pretty good D-end and a pretty big guy, weighing about 290 pounds. That was my first game and I only had a week and a half to prepare for it, so I was just learning as the season went on. Fortunately, there were a lot of senior leaders in that group so they got me through it."

Brown did much more than 'get through' his debut at right tackle. He did not allow a tackle for loss or a quarterback hurry to Williams, the No. 1 pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, and helped the Hokies open the season with a 20-16 victory in Raleigh, N.C. Brown went on to start the next 12 games that season and was on the field for 673 offensive snaps.

"The biggest adjustment I had to make was just getting used to the size of the guys I was going against," Brown said. "When you're a tight end, you're not asked to block a defensive lineman too much and you're running routes. I just had to get bigger and stronger. I had a tough time gaining weight at first, but it hasn't been a problem recently."

Brown has bulked up to 308 pounds for his senior season and is still negotiating his role on the special teams with the new frame, especially earlier in the season when temperatures were sweltering.

"You don't see a starting offensive lineman on the punt team too often," Brown said. "I enjoy it because I get to display my speed every now and then. The East Carolina game was my first

game at my current weight so I felt the effects of it. It wore on me that game, but I'm learning to play with it and trying to get in better shape."

Brown was asked by the coaching staff to make another position change in the offseason, this time from right to left tackle to protect the quarterback's blind side.

"It was a little difficult, changing from right to left tackle," Brown said. "I was comfortable over on the right side. The footwork and the technique for each side are a little different and now I'm also accountable for the blind side of the quarterback, so there's more responsibility."

Similar to his debut at right tackle, the veteran was pleased with his performance against ECU in his first game on the left side, but still realizes a lot of work lies ahead.

"I've had my first game and have had a chance to get my feet wet," he said. "It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, but I definitely have to keep improving as the season goes on."

So what was the biggest adjustment he had to make to move from tight end to offensive line?

"In our offense, it was more of a physical change because the tight ends work with the tackles a lot in our blocking schemes," Brown said. "I already knew most of the tackle's assignments when I moved from tight end, so it was just a matter of getting the footwork down and learning how to punch in pass protection."

If Hokie fans believe shifting from tight end into the interior offensive line is not that big of an accomplishment, don't tell Brown.

"It's really an underrated move," he said. "On this level, it's difficult going from catching passes to blocking 300-pound guys every play. It's tough because there are some very good D-ends out there that I have to go against every week, especially in the ACC."

With the success of tight end Sam Wheeler in the season opener against East Carolina, leading the team with 81 yards on seven receptions and a 21-yard touchdown catch, one could not blame a player for looking back at leaving that position with at least some regret, but Brown has moved past that.

"I don't regret moving to the O-Line anymore," he said. "I did for a while when I was younger, just seeing guys catch passes and score touchdowns, because you miss that glory. Fortunately, I grew to understand how important the offensive line is to the team. You can't have a successful offense without the offensive line because we're the foundation."

Brown's physical contributions to Tech's success on the field only tell half of the story.

His willingness to share knowledge and guide less-experienced players on Tech's offense has been invaluable.

"Changing positions a few times has helped me become a leader on the team because I have seen all of the different parts of the offense," Brown said. "Knowing what everyone is doing helps you gain respect of teammates, because any time a tight end lines up beside me and doesn't have an idea of what the play is or what to do, it's up to me to help them out and give them an assignment check."

Even though he is already an accomplished athlete and has a very high 'football IQ' at his disposal, Brown's reputation as one of the hardest-working players in practice every day is the trait teammates and coaches admire most.

"He's the only senior we have on the offensive line and he's taken that responsibility," praised second-year offensive line coach Curt Newsome. "His practice habits are great and that is the main reason for his great leadership ability."

His "coach on the field" role and exceptional practice habits have helped him form a unique

bond with Newsome.

"Duane and I are very close," Newsome said. "He's done everything I've asked him to do. Even in last year's group, they looked to him to lead. We've had a good relationship since the day I got here and I know that it will continue once he graduates."

Brown is hardly the only Tech offensive lineman who has laid the team's foundation for success with often-unheralded versatility.

Sophomore starting right guard, and Newnan, Ga., native Sergio Render is a combination of physicality and passion. Through two games, the 310-pounder led the group with 12 knockdown blocks.

"I bring strength and I'm very physical," Render said. "I'm pretty quick for a guy my size, and I just love the game of football."

Redshirt sophomore and Richmond, Va., native Richard Graham started the first two games of the season at left guard with Matt Welsh, a redshirt junior from Clifton, Va., spelling him. Both have earned respect for their grit.

"They're both very aggressive," Brown said. "They're not the biggest or strongest guys, but they give 115 percent."

Ryan Shuman anchors the line at center and is entrusted with identifying the middle linebacker before each snap.

"I have to set the 'mike' because the whole blocking scheme revolves around one guy," Shuman said. "Basically, all of their secondary calls are based on what I call out."

The redshirt junior from Fork Union, Va., uses his 314-pound frame to his advantage.

"I'm bigger than most centers but I can move to get outside while being physical at the point of attack," he said.

Redshirt sophomore Ed Wang was slated to start opposite Brown at right tackle before breaking his left ankle in preseason practice, but could return later in the season.

Nick Marshman has filled in admirably and has made many position changes as well, shifting from guard to tackle, tackle to guard, then back to tackle over his career. He is noted by Brown for his sheer size.

"(Marshman) is another great athlete on our offensive line," Brown said. "He's 357 pounds, but very nimble on his feet."

Newsome recognizes the potential in this group but realizes only one thing matters in the end.

"We know we need to improve because we're all about productivity," Newsome said. "We've got a group that I really like and they work hard. We have some fighters, but we just have to improve each week and show that we can run the ball up front."

Texans hit their jackpotTeam gambles correctly on availability of Brown, who has the speed and athleticism for O-line's new schemeBy JOHN MCCLAINCopyright 2008 Houston Chronicle

Virginia Tech's Duane Brown is the first offensive tackle the Texans have taken with their top draft choice. Rich Kane Icon SMI

Entering Saturday's first day of the NFL draft, the Texans had targeted four left tackles for their first-round pick. Ryan Clady, Chris Williams, Branden Albert and Duane Brown had been scouted thoroughly as the Texans looked for a left tackle who fit into the zone scheme they have installed. Coach Gary Kubiak, assistant head coach Alex Gibbs and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan — all of whom have Denver Broncos backgrounds — worked out and interviewed all the

candidates.

The brain trust knew Clady, Williams and Albert probably would be gone. They figured Brown, who played left tackle only one season at Virginia Tech, still would be on the board when it came time for general manager Rick Smith to make the 18th pick.

Smith then rolled the dice and gambled that Brown still would be available, trading back to the 26th spot with Baltimore and acquiring third- and sixth-round picks from the Ravens. The Texans then waited as the picks came off the board, keeping their fingers crossed that Brown would still be there.

"We were worried, but I tried to be the calm before the storm because I had a room full of people who were scared to death that we weren't going to get him," Smith said. "I had to put a good face on."

The telephone rang in the Texans' war room at Reliant Stadium. It was a team inquiring if the Texans wanted to trade down again.

"I heard the phone ring, and I screamed to Rick, 'Don't answer it!' " Kubiak said. "We've been in love with Duane for a long time. He fits what we want to do. He's very athletic. I love his passion for the game. We're calling on him to help this team very, very early."

Brown (6-4, 308 pounds) was moved from tight end to right tackle at Virginia Tech. When left tackle Brandon Frye was drafted by the Texans in the fifth round last year, Brown replaced him.

'A tremendous upside' Brown was the fastest offensive tackle at the combine, running a 5-second 40-yard dash. "He has a tremendous upside," Smith said. The Gibbs factor worked in Brown's favor. Gibbs, who came out of retirement after becoming one of the top offensive-line coaches in NFL history with a number of teams, including Denver and Atlanta. Gibbs demands that his linemen be quick, athletic and intelligent. They also need a mean streak because they have to cut-block. Some linemen don't like to cut because they don't want to be cut. Gibbs likes Brown's potential to excel as a run blocker as well as a pass protector. "We've got to improve our running game," Kubiak said. "We've got to move forward in that area. If we run the ball better, we'll keep our defense off the field. And we won't have to throw the ball as much as we have been, which will help protect our quarterbacks. "I think this kid is an automatic fit with what we want to do running the ball." The Texans didn't have a second-round pick Saturday because of the Matt Schaub trade. Today will be the third through seventh rounds. The Texans have six picks, including two in the third round. The sixth-round pick they acquired from Baltimore replaces the one they traded to

Denver for center Chris Myers.

"We feel good about that trade," Smith said of the deal with Baltimore. "As a young team trying to build, any time you can move back and acquire more picks, you should seriously consider it.

"When you're three or four teams away from making your pick and you're interested in moving, you start making calls. We'd been in contact with Baltimore much of the day, so it wasn't a last-minute thing."

Need was no secret

The Texans didn't try to hide their interest in getting a left tackle — a position that hasn't been filled on a regular basis in their first six seasons.

"There were some very good offensive linemen in this draft," Kubiak said. "To see Alex talk about Brown over the last six weeks the way he has and find a way to draft him while getting a couple of extra picks is a job well done."

Smith wouldn't say what the Texans would have done if another team had moved in front of them to get Brown.

"You need a little luck in this process," Smith said. "We had a great month of preparation, but we were fortunate, too. I was confident we'd get it done, but I'm very thankful that we did."

(Conference Call transcribed Tiffanie Hatley, Daniel Sampson) (on his reaction to the phone call from the Texans) “Well, I was excited because it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity for these things and I’m ready to come in and work.” (on if he thought he was going to get drafted by the Texans) “At this point, I had no idea.” (on where he watched the draft) “I’m watching it with my family and I’m here with my high school coach and a couple of friends.” (on family’s reaction) “They were happy, they were ecstatic. We were all glad and I’m just happy to be a Texan.” (on transferring to Eastern Kentucky from Toledo) “I didn’t qualify coming out of high school and I wasn’t on scholarship at Toledo, so in turn I didn’t have the aid. I had to transfer down to play in a Division 1-AA school to continue my football career.” (on why he picked Eastern Kentucky) “I picked Eastern because I had a high school coach and that’s his alma mater. He played there with a couple of coaches that still coach there. It was a last-minute decision when I took it.” (on how his high school coach Ted Ginn Sr. helped his career) “He influenced a lot. He has a great foundation and a great infrastructure on how he runs his program and his athletes. I’ve learned a lot from the guy. He has taught me how to be a young man as well.” (on how his speed helps on the football field) “Most definitely, all my explosion, lateral movements and endurance, it helped me very well.” (on who showed the most interest in him) “At the combine, it was just competing against the best athletes. I was very fortunate to put up those results.” (on what round did he think he would be picked in) “Anywhere from late day one to early day two, but I had no idea. This is my first time going through the process and I didn’t know what to expect.” (on what he knows about the Texans) “I know the Texans are a great organization. It’s a young team; it’s on the rise. They started the franchise six years ago. I am looking forward to it. I know Houston is a great city. I’ve never been to Houston, but just from hearing about it, I know Houston is a great city.”

(on if he looked at what teams needed cornerbacks) “Not really, because I knew it would stress me out. I let my agent do that and he filled out all that information.” (on his strengths) “I feel like I am the complete package. Going through my review, I have a lot to learn about the league. It’s fast, so I will have to adapt to the speed, the NFL speed. At the point of going into the draft, I feel like I am one of the elite, complete package of playing cover two or man to man. My height, my speed, my agility. I feel like I have an advantage.” (on if playing at a 1-AA school hurt his draft stock?) “As far as the exposure part, yes.”

Steve Slaton Conference Call (Conference call transcribed by Tiffanie Hatley, Ashley Thomas and Daniel Sampson) (on reaction from the phone call today) “Very excited, very excited. It’s been a long dream and it’s finally come true, and I’m happy to be with the Texans.” (on how offensive coordinator/quarterbacks Kyle Shanahan feels he fits in to the one-cut system, adjusting to the zone-blocking scheme, and becoming a possible third down back for them right off the bat) “I always think that the work you put in is what you get out of it. I’m going to work very hard to come in and do my part.” (on whether former coach Rich Rodriguez leaving for Michigan was a factor in deciding to come out early) “It was a little part of it, but playing in the NFL has been a dream since I starting playing football, and I felt an opportunity came and I had to take it.” (on knowing the Texans) “Not right now, but I am going to learn.” (on the biggest adjustments and on what he looks forward) “I think the biggest adjustment is knowing that everyone who is picked is the cream of the crop now. I have to use my God given talent and do my best.” (on what he credits his success from West Virginia to) “All work and a great scheme. And I made a great choice going to West Virginia and it played in with my strength a lot.” (on what kind of contributions he can make) “I see myself as a playmaker. I am proud of myself for making big plays and I think that is what I can bring to the Texans.” (on offensive coordinator/quarterbacks Kyle Shanahan, the offensive coordinator, comparing him to Reggie Bush or Kevin Faulk) “Hopefully I can get my foot in the door; I can make my own comparison and just be Steve Slaton.”

Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks Kyle Shanahan and Defensive Coordinator Richard

Smith Press Conference (Transcribed by Deon Reynolds and Brett Cervenka)

Offensive coordinator/quarterbacks Kyle Shanahan (on picking RB Steve Slaton with the 89th pick in the draft) “Steve Slaton from West Virginia, we just took, we are really excited to have him. He has some special qualities. He’s had a great career. He’s got unbelievable stats for three years. We think this guy has special talents. He’s a receiving-type back; a guy that can play third downs and can be very hard to cover out of the backfield and is a big time mismatch for linebackers in coverage. He’s a very tough guy and a very smart guy. He had one of the highest wonderlic scores at the running back position at the combine in Indianapolis. He’s a guy that is very reliable as a person and we think he has the talent and skill to fit a role that we are looking for.” Defensive coordinator Richard Smith (on picking CB Antwaun Molden with the 79th pick in the draft) “We are really excited about the pick. We all know that we needed that position badly because of the injury to (CB) Dunta Robinson. Let me go back a year from now. A year ago, we took (CB) Fred Bennett, and we know the success that he’s had so far. (Defensive backs coach) Jon Hoke went and worked (CB) Fred Bennett out and came back with very high remarks. Everything Jon said Fred was, Fred was when he came here. (CB) Antwaun Molden was a player that we sent Jon Hoke out to work out personally, he had really good numbers at the combine. We got a big man that’s probably over 6 foot and a half, close to 200 pounds and runs a 4.4 forty. He’s got long arms, he’s got good length. So it’s the same qualifications that (CB) Fred Bennett had. So, when you are looking at him, I’m not trying to compare the two, but you got another young, good corner who has speed. He did come from a smaller school. If he would have played at Miami or something like that he probably would have been taken in a much higher round. He’s a guy like (CB) Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, he ran track against Cromartie. You can look this up or something, but I heard he beat Cromartie six out of seven times, so he has that kind of speed. He’s a guy that’s going to have to come in here and learn our system. We see a huge upside in this kid. We might be able to have a guy here in the third round that’s going to be a fine football player, and we are really excited about having him.” (on what he liked about CB Antwaun Molden against the run) “What I liked about him is he has the size and has the foot quickness. His foot speed is really good. Usually when you have big corners, first of all, the coverage part of it, the transition coming out of the plants and breaks and stuff like that is a little bit late. He doesn’t have that, he has really

Page 50: Houston Texans NFL Draft April 26-27, 2008prod.static.texans.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/2008_FinalBook_Staff.p… · Houston Texans NFL DRAFT April 26-27, 2008 Houston Texans 2008

good feet, so from that standpoint we like our safeties, its really hard to find a guy like (CB) Dunta Robinson, but he’s a willing tackler getting on and off blocks and we think he’s going to pick up stuff like that.” Kyle Shanahan (on how he feels RB Steve Slaton fits the running back scheme in Houston) “I think (RB) Steve Slaton pretty much fits any offense to tell you the truth. The reason I think that is because he’s a good runner, and a good enough runner can fit into any scheme. What we like most about Slaton, is I think he’s got a chance to be a special-type player. You look at guys around the league like (RB) Kevin Faulk, a guy like (RB) Reggie Bush; guys who come in and fill a specific role on third downs. If you look at the top offenses in the league, they all have a player like that. I think this guy fits that role for us. We have two guys right now that we think can carry the load, but this guy can come in a fill a role. We can use him on third downs, we can use him in special situations to come in and be a change of pace type player. He’s got the size and the quickness and the mentality to do the things we’re going to ask. I think he will fill that role in the pass game and in the run game and in one-back situations.” Richard Smith (on how good he thinks it will be to have two big corners with the addition of CB Antwaun Molden) “I think it’s great. When you look at now but also the future for this organization, the youth that we have and the talent in terms of what (DE) Mario Williams up front and the linebacker core with (LB) DeMeco Ryans. And we also got a lot of promise with (LB) Zac Diles, who we took in the seventh round last year. Athletically he still needs to do it. Then you look at the back end, where last year we were able to get (CB) Fred Bennet and this year get (CB) Antwaun Molden. I think we are building some good athletes that can run; that have really good size for the position. From that standpoint, I think it looks pretty good for us. Do we lack experience, yeah we do, but that’s our job as coaches to coach and put them in the right positions.” Kyle Shanahan (on if he believes size plays a role in RB Steve Slaton not being drafter higher) “I think when a guy is 197 pounds and if you look at the history throughout the NFL there are not too many guys that are first and second down player for long periods of time. When you look at a guy that people are projecting as a third down type guy or a change of pace guy I believe a lot of teams have more important needs that go early in the draft. One exception is Reggie Bush; he is the highest guy that I’ve seen go that is a third down type player. The third round is when these guys start popping out.” (on the running back competition this season) “The running back position is funny because you could feel really good about running back one day and the another day you feel that its your weakest position. These guys take a pounding and do it everyday. They also have to be fresh to compete at a higher level in the NFL. Guys wear down and you never know what will happen. To have the numbers there it benefits the competition. Not only there is a competition at running back now we also have some guys who can compete for specific roles. We want guys that compete to be an every down back, we want guys to compete to be a third down back. There are different spots now that give guys advantages were you don’t have to always pick the exact same type of guy competing with each other. Every guy brings something different to the table.”

Page 51: Houston Texans NFL Draft April 26-27, 2008prod.static.texans.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/2008_FinalBook_Staff.p… · Houston Texans NFL DRAFT April 26-27, 2008 Houston Texans 2008

(on if they’ll look at RB Steve Slaton to return kickoffs) “You have to ask (special teams coordinator) Joe Marciano about that. He has those types of skills. He’s a 4.4 guy that’s very quick and can catch the ball and he fits the mold of a returner. I didn’t think they had him returning in college as much. He was a three year starter who had great stats at running back so I believe they were afraid of getting him hurt as a returner, he has those types of skills.”

Texans use 3rd round picks on CB Molden, RB Slaton

In fourth round, team selects Virginia Tech OLB Adibi; Texas DT Okam is fifth-round pickBy MEGAN MANFULLCopyright 2008 Houston Chronicle

Outside linebacker Xavier Adibi was the second player out of Virginia Tech to be taken by the Texans in the 2008 draft. Here he wraps up Miami running back Charlie Jones. STEVE HELBER AP

The Texans kicked off their second day of the NFL draft by picking up Eastern Kentucky cornerback Antwaun Molden with the 79th overall pick and added running back Steve Slaton with the 89th pick. Molden, 6-foot-0 and 198 pounds, started spent one season at Toledo before transferring for his final three seasons. He become a regular starter

for the Colonel's his senior season and finished fifth on the team with 70 tackles.

"I know the Texans are a great organization," Molden said. "It's a young team; it's on the rise."

Defensive coordinator Richard Smith stressed the need for drafting a cornerback because of the injury to Dunta Robinson, and is optimistic about Molden's potential.

"We see a huge upside in (Molden)," Smith said. "We might be able to have a guy here in the third round that's going to be a fine football player, and we are really excited about having him.

Slaton, 5-foot-9, 197 pounds, rushed for 3,923 yards at West Virginia. He was an all-Big East conference second-team selection and a semi- finalist for the Maxwell Award. He is a solid one- cut running back, which makes him a good fit for the Texans' zone-blocking scheme.

"I see myself as a playmaker," Slaton said. "I am proud of myself for making big plays and I think that is what I can bring to the Texans."

In the fourth round, the Texans selected another player from Virgina Tech, drafting outside linebacker Xavier Adibi.

Adibi, 6-1, 235 pounds, recorded 291 tackles, 11 sacks and eight interceptions in 47 games with the Hokies.

Smith said the Texans can see Adibi playing either the left- or right-side position, and that the team expects him to compete on special

Houston Texans NFL DRAFT

April 26-27, 2008

LB Xavier Adibi Conference Call (Press conference transcribed by Brett Cervenka)

(on getting drafted by the Texans and joining college teammate T Duane Brown) “It’s great. Getting the call from the Houston Texans and going over there with one of my good friends that I came to college with in Duane Brown. I’m just very excited and can’t wait to go out there and show everyone what I can do.” (on how close he and T Duane Brown were in high school) “In high school, we weren’t very close. I had heard about him because he lived in Richmond. He played in Richmond and I played in Hampton. I would always read about him and I heard about him on the news. But when we got to Virginia Tech, we came in together and we were suite mates, so we’ve grown real close throughout the years and it just feels good to have him over there with me.” (on if he is looking forward to playing on a team with LB DeMeco Ryans) “Oh yes. (LB) DeMeco Ryans is a heck of a linebacker. I used to watch him all the time when he played at Alabama. He is an excellent linebacker; one of the up and coming linebackers in the league, one of the best, in my opinion, in the league. I just can’t wait to go out there and study under him and learn everything I can.” (on if he and T Duane Brown talked about where they would end up and if they would get drafted by the same team) “Everyone talks about where you could end up. I remember having one conversation with the Houston Texans, it kind of caught me off guard but I’m very excited to come to Houston.” (on how much of an adjustment it will be to move from inside linebacker to outside linebacker) “It won’t be too much of an adjustment. At Virginia Tech, they called my position inside linebacker but it was more of an outside linebacker. I played a little bit of inside as well, but mostly outside. So it won’t be too much of a big adjustment for me.” (on what he brings to the team) “I bring leadership and a winning mentality. You know, I’m a win a championship at every level of every sport type of guy. My work ethic; I’m willing to go that extra mile to be that excellent football player. I love to play the game and I love to make plays and have fun. That’s the most part.” (on if he felt he got overshadowed by playing with CB Brandon Flowers and LB Vince Hall at Virginia Tech) “No, I mean, maybe at times. Hall and Flowers are two excellent, excellent football players. Just playing besides those guys just made my job easier. I was very blessed to have those two on my team, especially Duane Brown as well. I just can’t wait to go over there and play.”

Page 58: Houston Texans NFL Draft April 26-27, 2008prod.static.texans.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/2008_FinalBook_Staff.p… · Houston Texans NFL DRAFT April 26-27, 2008 Houston Texans 2008

(on what fans would be surprised to know about T Duane Brown) “Duane is a character. He’s very funny once you get to know him. He’s just a real cool guy to talk to.” (on his conversations with the Texans) “I had one conversation with the Texans at the Senior Bowl, I believe. So that was a long time ago. Like I said, it kind of caught me off guard. I wasn’t really expecting it, but I’m very excited.” (on where he thought he would go in the draft) “I was thinking maybe like the second, maybe third. I went in the fourth and everything happens for a reason. I’m not going to lie and say I wasn’t a little upset, but I just can’t wait to go out there and show the coaches what I can do and just show everybody else why they drafted me.”

Houston Texans NFL DRAFT

April 26-27, 2008 Defensive Coordinator Richard Smith Press Conference on

LB Xavier Adibi (Press conference transcribed by Deon Reynolds)

(opening statements) “We are really excited about this pick. He’s a really productive linebacker and has really good athletic ability. We like his foot quickness and his change direction. He has made quite a few plays from on the ball he’s got really long arms (34 inches) which is impressive. When we interviewed him at the combine we found out that he is an intelligent football player he tested out well. Those are the guys we look at. We look at him coming in and competing in the linebacker position also we expect him to contribute right away on the special teams. We are really pleased with this pick.” (on mentioning to T Duane Brown about picking his former teammate from college) “No in fact when we were debating on what happens early in the draft you start to review who are the top guys that are left what do we do or where do we go? All of a sudden one of the coaches said this guy is from the same hometown as Duane. That’s a good sign to see two guys from the same hometown which means they fly on the same plane to and from Houston.” (on what position of LB Xavier Adibi will play) “He’s basically an outside linebacker. We can see him play the left or ride side position which we’ll get that going once he gets here. Right now he’s an outside linebacker so we are very pleased with is athleticism, his production, and his whole make up about him. We think he’s got a chance of being a very good football player and right away we see him competing on special teams.” (on Adibi’s pass rush ability) “When you go back and look at his background when he was in high school he was a defensive lineman I think also he was a running back too. I believe he had 13 sacks in his career in high school. I think he had eight interceptions and quite few sacks in his college career. This guy is an athlete his forty time at the combine was 4.7 at his school workout he ran a 4.58. He’s a good size kid who runs well for us in the 4.6 range and we are pleased to have him.” (on the possibility of Adibi getting over shadowed in the draft) “No, not at all. As a matter of fact we were really excited about him. We had some really good grades on him. Everybody looks at different things at different positions. He has natural hip explosion and very good body control and balance. We like what we saw when we interviewed him down in Indianapolis.” (on having a crowded linebacking corps) “We are not crowded. Right now we don’t have very many numbers at that position. Before the draft we only had six linebackers you suppose to have nine when you go into camp. I think it’s exciting to add something new at that position. We have (LB) Demeco Ryans and (LB) Zac Diles from last year and now

we are going to add another athlete in Xavier in that role as a young guy that has very good athletic ability, but got size.”

Houston Texans NFL DRAFT

April 26-27, 2008

DT Frank Okam Conference Call

(Transcribed by Tiffanie Hatley) (on thoughts about being drafted) “It was a great feeling. I came here earlier for a visit and talked to the people in the organization, and being able to stay and play in Texas is a great deal.” (on joining defensive line with so many high draft picks) “It’s an awesome feeling. You know you are going to be able to be around a lot of talent and you see the guys that are coming into their own on the defensive line. So it is going to be fun to be part of that group, and that core and hope to have a strong defense in the NFL now.” (on if he has started law school) “No I haven’t. (on being pre-law) “No, we don’t have that at Texas. I graduated with a degree in Sports Management. (on what he said to defensive coordinator Richard Smith to convince him that he was a guy to be drafted by Houston) “I’m a competitor. I love the game, and I want to play in an organization that is heading in the right direction, and I really felt that they were doing that. Basically, I just want to let them see my talents and my focus personally. Before you can judge someone fully you have to get to know that person, and they brought me in and really sat down and talked to me. They just wanted to see where my head was, and they knew that I’m passionate about this game. I basically told them that they are going to get a guy that can stop the run and get at the quarterback when you need that.” (on growing up as a Dallas Cowboys fan) “Yes I did.” (on how he felt about the Texans before they drafted him) “Both of my roommates in college were from Houston and so I have been around Houston a long, long time now and it is actually one of my favorite cities to be in. Being able to play in the state and go to Houston, it is a blessing really.” (on dropping so low in the draft) “It was probably a lot of different factors and things. Probably the reason talked about was the law school stuff. People wanted to know if I really wanted to play the game or go to school. There were people worried about my passion for the game. I think, just looking at the way things were brought up in the draft. There are still a lot of special type players that haven’t been drafted yet, or maybe won’t be drafted. As long as you know what you want, that is really all I cared about. Football is football, the draft will take care of itself, and once you get there no one really remembers what round you went. In training camp you have to go play.”

(on what weight he would like to report to camp at and how it got high during the combine) “325. Honestly, the creatine I have been taking my whole life and if you don’t take it right you carry a lot of water weight. After the combine I stopped taking it, and I have lost a lot of weight already, I am down to 328 right now. I am just getting back to what people saw.”

Houston Texans NFL DRAFT

April 26-27, 2008

Defensive Coordinator Richard Smith

(Press conference transcribed Deon Reynolds and Daniel Sampson) (on the Texans fifth round pick DT Frank Okam)“What’s nice about it is we got a guy from Texas. He’s from Dallas, he went to the University of Texas and we had him in hear a couple of days ago. We brought him in and interviewed him again just to go through in terms of his passion of the game. What you have here is a big football player. He brings a size and dimension that we don’t have with our defensive line. This guy is 6-4 ½. I think at the combine he was 347 pounds and I think he played at 335. So that’s a size you are looking for especially in our league where you have to stop the run and we think he has that type of ability. Plus, the size of this man, he is also a very good athlete. We like the way he can bend, he can change directions and a very good body and core balance. Why did he drop to the fifth round? Well, his play was very inconsistent this year. That’s our job as coaches to get it out of them. We think he’s got great potential and we’re pleased to have them.” (on weight concerns of DT Frank Okam) “No, when you see this guy with his shirt off, you will see him when he comes in here that he looks good. He was a little heavy at the combine but like I said he was down to 335. He’s a big man. He’s got long legs, about 34 inch arm length. He probably has the biggest hands in the combine which is very important for defensive guys to be able to grab onto people and get rid of them. Size 11 hands so for most things, he got all those measurables that you look for. The thing that excites us most about this kid is his size and athletic ability. We’re excited to work with him this upcoming mini-camp.” (on how Texans will utilize DT Frank Okam) “When you look at us on our inside at our defensive tackle position, you have (DT) Travis Johnson who had a great year and you have (DT) Amobi Okoye who is a three technique and behind him, you got (DT Anthony) Maddox. We’re really a little bit under sized inside. We’re excited about this guy because he has the athletic ability that he can play either position. Whatever the position may be, that’s going to work its way out in time. We were excited because coming into the draft we were looking for a bigger inside player. I know everybody reads and talks about us getting another pass rusher, everybody in the country would like that. But at this particular time in the draft we were fortunate to get this big man and like I said we are excited because of his athletic ability and his promise that he has.” (on playing with other defensive tackles) “When you come in here you are always looking for youth. With good competition at each position, I think he will do that. Once again it’s all right wishing and we think we’re right and now once again he has to come and prove it and we have to do a good job of coaching him too.”

Page 70: Houston Texans NFL Draft April 26-27, 2008prod.static.texans.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/2008_FinalBook_Staff.p… · Houston Texans NFL DRAFT April 26-27, 2008 Houston Texans 2008

(on questioning Okam’s heart) “This guy is very intelligent. When you talk to him, he is working on his law degree and things like that. What I just wanted to do when he came here to meet with us was to see how important football was to him. You can have all the talent in the world and if a guy doesn’t have it right here in his heart and have the passion to play this game because it’s a hard game to play then you is wasting a pick. Our time here spent together he said the right things I wanted to here. It wasn’t where anybody prepped him on the questions because I had his strong points and weak points written down and I think that’s sometimes good for him and we’re fortunate that we were able to get him at that pick.” (On what type of DT Frank Okam will be) “He could play either he could play 3 or he could play nose (tackle) or he could also because he’s such a big man people who have him playing 3-4 said he could be a zero technique. He is a big man that has the athletic ability. When we looked at him he had the ability to bend his knees, change direction and he’s got good body balance. He’s got hip rotation were he can turn his hips and scant. He’s had like 11-16 sack in his career, but anytime you have 335 pound guy you’re getting a guy who would be able to plug holes in for you.”

S Dominique Barber Conference Call

(Press conference transcribed Tiffanie Hatley and Ashley Thomas) (on reaction to the Texans call) “I’m speechless. I have never been so excited in my life. To be here in Minneapolis with my family, it’s a blessing. I’m excited to be part of this organization, and I can’t wait to get in there and get my feet wet.” (on how today has been) “It’s been a long day. I’ve tried to stay away from the T.V., but I catch myself going back and forth listening to the draft. I’ve been out here with my family and that’s all I can ask for. I am so blessed to have this opportunity, and I am extremely excited.” (on bloodlines, Barber’s dad and brother playing in the NFL, and if this adds any pressure) “As for the pressure, no pressure at all. I look at the way my dad and brother teach me about the game, and talk to me about what they’ve gone through, and how I am a different player that they are and they are a different player than I am, and my dad is a different player than both of us. It’s about what we do with our opportunities, and taking advantage of the opportunity when it comes; don’t worry about anything, just go out there and play the game that you can play. It’s great to have these bloodlines. My brother (RB Marion Barber III) is having a great career with the Cowboys, my dad (Marion Barber, Jr.) had a great career with the Jets, and I’m hoping to have a great career with the Texans.” (on the intrastate rivalry with his brother) “My brothers and I have been going at it since we were kids and now that we are grown men, it will be great.” (on his biggest strength) “I definitely think it is coming in and adapting. I had three defensive coordinators, four different position coaches, and two different head coaches. So I had to learn a lot of different schemes and I had to learn it quickly. That is something I am able to adapt too quickly, I am a smart player, and I am just excited to get my feet wet and get in the play books.” (on the defensive side of the ball with players like DE Mario Williams, DT Amobi Okoye and LB DeMeco Ryans) “They’re exciting players. Those are players that college kids like myself look up to. The way they bring their defense and excitement to the game, I am just excited to be apart of this defense and the organization. I can’t wait to play with these guys.

Defensive Coordinator Richard Smith Press Conference on

S Dominique Barber (Press conference transcribed Brett Cervenka and Deon Reynolds)

(opening Statements) “With (S Dominique) Barber we feel like we have a player with a great bloodline. His dad played with the (New York) Jets his brother now plays with Dallas. When you get into these kinds of rounds and you are going through and trying to decide who you are going to pick a lot of things are good here, but it depends on who has a chance to really compete and try to make your football team at this stage. We think because of his bloodline with his dad and also with his brother that this guy will come in here and give everything he’s got because it’s in his family genes to make this football team. From that standpoint we will look at him from when he comes in. He’s a very distinctive player, very smart and high effort guy. He’s more of a box safety than he is as a free safety in the middle of the field. You may say we already have some of those guys right now, but what this move does is give us a younger guy and we like his football mentality and instincts on the field. He doesn’t put himself in bad situations so he’s an intelligent football player right away he can come in and contribute on special teams. You look back and say that we drafted whenever it was (a year ago) with (S Brandon) Harrison that came in, but with Harrison right now is a unproven factor he’s been injured its really hard for me to sit there to tell you everything about him because last year he wasn’t on our football team because of the injuries. Those are still question marks that need to be answered so we are happy with this pick.” (On how Barber reacts to the ball) “He’s got good ball skills. Watching him workout at the combine in terms of his range and his ball skills I thought they were good. Sometimes when you read his speed and why he didn’t go higher it’s not because his football ability it’s because of the speed part of it. I think he ran a 4.65 or something like that. We like him as a football player and we are happy to get him.” (on how competitive safety will be during training camp) “I think its going to be very competitive. I like all of the people at the position that we’ve got. That position back there, you have to have a guy that understands football and communicates. Anytime on defense, when someone moves on offense it creates checks, which means you can change from one coverage to a different coverage. You need that experienced and vocal guy. Barber is intelligent and we feel he will be able to handle those things. (S) Will Demps comes back, he’s got probably the most experience at the position, but he is an older guy. Whatever it was, a couple years ago, getting (S) C.C. Brown before we got here. We might have gotten him in the same round and he’s able to contribute and ends up starting here. We like Barber because, once again, he’s a younger player.” (on how much of a factor it is to have Defensive backs assistant coach Ray Rhodes bringing his expertise to this draft) “Well I’ll tell you what’s been really great about Ray.

Page 77: Houston Texans NFL Draft April 26-27, 2008prod.static.texans.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/2008_FinalBook_Staff.p… · Houston Texans NFL DRAFT April 26-27, 2008 Houston Texans 2008

It’s from all aspects, his experience. We sat down just the two us, and at times we’ve gone back over the last few years and we just discuss certain calls and certain situations. From that standpoint I love his demeanor and I love his experience. He’s been very helpful in that aspect. Also, what he’s doing is in the draft is he is evaluating the safeties. We gave him that and (Dominique) Barber is one of his guys that he stood up on the table for today. He thought he had a bright future. It’s good and he’s got a very good demeanor with the players and that’s where I think his expertise lies.”

QB Alex Brink Conference Call

(Press conference transcribed Tiffanie Hatley and Ashley Thomas) (on his reaction from Texans call) “I was real excited. It was definitely a relief. Certainly been waiting around all day, hoping for something like this to happen, and I’m just excited that I’m going to get a great opportunity with a great organization.” (on what its like to able to come to Houston and work with head coach Gary Kubiak) “Knowing the type of coach he is and the great work he has with quarterbacks, I am just so excited to be down there and have the opportunity to be with him and (offensive coordinator/quarterbacks) coach (Kyle) Shanahan and learn from them. I know they were excited, and I was just as excited. I want to get down there and show them what I can do.” (on biggest strength) “I definitely think my understanding of the game and my understanding of the offenses. I feel like I’m a pretty sharp guy and pick up on things pretty well.”
